Monday Volleyball: Lady Lions win 12th straight game, roll past Fillmore with straight-set home victory; Houghton wins, C-R falls in straight sets
WELLSVILLE — Since the beginning of the season, there has simply been no slowing down the Lady Lions of Wellsville. Each and every way possible, they have been able to keep their opposition held in check for 11 consecutive games in straight sets. With the way things have been trending, the Lady Lions would not be stopped.
Back on the floor for action on Monday, Wellsville made it 12 straight in the win column for the sweep, as they brought out the brooms once more, this time against the visiting Lady Eagles of Fillmore after setting up shop with a dominating first set, as they rolled to the finish line with a 3-0 win by 25-11, 25-19, 25-17 count.
The first set would open up with Wellsville (12-0) taking complete control behind the immaculate service of Jaelyn Knapp, who provided five straight points from the line. In return, Jadyn Mucher would get Fillmore on the board with four straight points of her own to close the early gap. Both teams would trade barbs since the scoreless runs, but the Lady Lions took advantage of the floor by regaining the lead with seven of the next nine points going their way.
The Wellsville lead would grow by as much as 10 before the Lady Eagles (8-5) found a way to end the drought with a kill. With the lead now standing at 17-8, the Lady Lions, despite the streak coming to a close, would finish the set by scoring eight of the last 11 points to take the 25-11 win.
In the second set, it was the Lady Eagles that sprung out ahead first with a scoreless run, netting four in a row but was quickly erased when Wellsville began to pick up steam to tie the game at five, scoring five of the next six points. The lead was built upon to as much as five at one point, and then maintained as each team exchanged back and forth points.
Fillmore would attempt a late rally down the stretch against the Lady Lions, cutting the deficit to as little as five at set point, but a miscue on defense allowed the hosts to pick up the 2-0 match lead.
In the third set, the Lady Lions would continue to find their groove until the end, when they declared victory in straight-set sweeping fashion to lock up the win.
The attack was led by Brooklyn Stisser, who recorded a team-high six kills to pair with her seven digs on defense. Marley Adams added in three kills of her own to go with two aces, two digs and an assist, while Emma Dunaway provided four aces from the line, and three kills. Maddy Parks dished out nine assists up front to pair with four digs.
On the other side of the net, Fillmore was led by Emma Cole, who recorded a team-high eight kills, one block and one ace. Jadyn Mucher added in two more kills of her own along with two aces, while setter Zoe Hubbard dished out nine assists up at the front to pair with one kill.
The Lady Lions will look to extend the win streak to 13 when they return to their home floor tonight with a 7 p.m. first serve slated against Houghton Academy. As for Fillmore, they will look to return to the win column back on the road Wednesday night at Bolivar-Richburg in a 7:30 p.m. battle against the Lady Wolverines.
Allegany-Limestone 3, Cuba-Rushford 0
ALLEGANY — The Lady Gators of Allegany-Limestone were at the top of their game Monday night, as they brought out the brooms and raced toward victory by a straight-set decision, taking the 3-0 win by a 25-9, 25-17, 25-22 count over the visiting Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford.
The Lady Rebels (4-8) were led by Lauren O’Keefe on defense, garnering a team-leading nine digs to pair with five aces from the line, and three kills on the attack. Following was Kendall Tompkins, who chipped in seven more digs of her own along with four more aces and a kill. Setter Quincy Tyler handed out nine assists to add with her three kills and one dig.
Cuba-Rushford will look to turn it back around on Wednesday back home, when they host Genesee Valley/Belfast in a 7:30 p.m. first serve.
Houghton Academy (8-4) 3, Genesee Valley/Belfast (7-9) 0
HOUGHTON — It started with a commanding first set. From that point forward, the Lady Panthers of Houghton Academy garnered the momentum they would need to record a straight-set victory on their home floor Monday night, as they rolled their way toward a 3-0 sweep of visiting Genesee Valley/Belfast, taking the 25-7, 25-14, 25-21 decision.
Stats for either team were not provided upon publication.
Houghton Academy (8-4) will look to continue their winning ways on the road in a quick turnaround tonight, visiting the unbeaten Wellsville Lady Lions in a 7 p.m. first serve, while Genesee Valley/Belfast (7-9) heads out on the road once more to visit Cuba-Rushford on Wednesday in a 7:30 p.m. contest of their own.
