Monday Soccer: Lady Jaguars win 5th straight, edge past C-R on road; Fillmore girls remain unbeaten, And/Whi boys earn 1st win

CUBA — Since the beginning of the season, the Lady Jaguars were tested early with the defending Class D1 champion Lady Eagles of Fillmore straight out of the gate. Since then, they’ve been on a hot streak.

Four straight wins, including three shutouts and a big win over the road to County rival Bolivar-Richburg in overtime. On Monday, they had a chance to extend that win streak to five under some less-than-perfect conditions with the rain making an appearance all throughout the day and into the night.

Despite that, the Lady Jaguars made sure they got the job done. With a 1-0 lead at the half, they maintained that lead for most of the game despite Cuba-Rushford making an interesting goal to cut the lead in half. But they managed to lock up the win with one last goal with 67 seconds remaining to hold the 3-1 victory.

“Credit to Genesee Valley tonight. They’ve got a great group of solid seniors over there,” said Lady Rebels coach Aaron Rawady. “It was a good, tough-fought game that they battled through, even through the rain.”

All three goals by Genesee Valley (5-1) were all unassisted, with Natalie Brodman grabbing the first of the night just past the 10 minute mark, as she recorded her second of the season. After the half at the midway crossing point in the second half, Sierra Burrows made it a two-goal lead with a goal of her own.

Then, the Lady Rebels (1-5) made an interesting play with under five minutes left in the game, as Macie Demick cut the deficit straight down the middle, receiving a pass from Cloey Larabee to knock it to the back into the Genesee Valley netting.

With Cuba-Rushford applying the pressure late, Genesee Valley saw some senior leadership rise to the occasion with 1:07 remaining in the game, as Emera Aquila took matters into her own hands to lock up the victory with the team’s final goal on their ninth shot of the game, which outshot the Lady Rebels by a 9-6 count.

In goal, Ashley Burrows earned the win with three saves, while Tara Duvall recorded six on the flip side for the hosts.

Both teams are back on the field Wednesday night, as Genesee Valley heads out to Fillmore for a big County Division I showdown with a 7 p.m. first kick. As for the Lady Rebels, they will look to turn the ship around with Wellsville in town for a 6 p.m. contest.

Fillmore 7, Franklinville 1

FILLMORE — The name of the game in Fillmore on a rainy Monday night, was all about scoring fast. In the first half, the first and last pair of goals scored were all scored within a single minute of each other.

When it came down to the end, Fillmore had more of them. After visiting Franklinville responded to the Lady Eagles call bright and early in the first half, Fillmore made sure the Lady Panthers did not score again, as they went on to score six unanswered goals to pull away toward a 7-1 home win to remain unbeaten.

The Lady Eagles (7-0) were led by a pair of hat tricks recorded by their offensive front, as Sophia Templeton and Hope Russell led the way with a trio of goals, with Templeton scoring her three goals all in the first 40 minutes. Her first came just two minutes into the game off a pass from Shelby Beardsley, who had four assists in all.

Franklinville was able to respond back a single minute later with a goal from Sophia Bentley to tie the game at one. But the rest of the game, it was all Fillmore as they scored the last six goals of the game, the next four from Templeton and Hope Russell to end the half with a 5-1 lead.

Templeton and Russell would score back-to-back in one minute right before the half ended, at the 36 and 37th minutes.

Russell would finish her hat trick near the midway mark of the second half, picking up a Beardsley feed after Grace Russell started the new session with a goal in the first two minutes. Rachel Hatch would add an assist for the Lady Eagles to round off the stat sheet.

In goal, Preslee Miller recorded the shutout in goal, as she combined with Alex Thur to provide two saves in between the pipes.

Fillmore will now look for eight in a row Wednesday night at 7 p.m. back on their home turf, as they host Genesee Valley - winners of five straight.

Hinsdale 5, Scio 1

HINSDALE — For the first time this season, the Hinsdale Lady Bobcats are officially on the board with a victory, as they hang five goals on visiting Scio on their home field, including an Ava Belec hat trick that helped lead the way in their 5-1 victory on Monday.

Belec got Hinsdale (1-4-1) on the board right away in the first half, scoring two of her three goals in a five minute span, with her first coming on a pass from Jaylee Jimerson at the six minute mark to break the ice.

Jimerson herself would score near the midway mark of the half, netting her first of the season off a pass from Belec at center. But the shutout would not remain for much longer, as Scio (0-4-1) got on the board with help from Lexi Crossley. With 10 minutes left to go, Hinsdale branched the lead back to three on a goal from Lindsey Veno.

Belec would finish off the hat trick in the first 10 minutes of the second half, making a second unassisted run to the Lady Tigers net to close out the heavy offensive night for the hosts in blue.

Haylee Jozwiak recorded the win in goal for Hinsdale, stopping three shots. Kiara Grover made six saves for Scio.

Both teams are back on the field on Wednesday, as Hinsdale stays home to welcome in Bolivar-Richburg for a 5:30 p.m. contest, while Scio gets back onto the field after an extended break, next Tuesday night at 7 p.m. against Friendship at home.

Scio’s home contest with Belfast on Wednesday has been postponed. No make-up date for the game has been announced, as of yet.

BOYS SOCCER

Andover/Whitesville 6, Friendship 1

FRIENDSHIP — Spencer Cook was a busy body all over the field for Andover/Whitesville, as he scored a goal while dishing out two assists, as the Panthers scored five goals to put the hammer down on host Friendship immediately, rolling toward a 6-1 victory to earn their first of the season on Monday.

Andover/Whitesville (1-4-1) scored their first two goals in a span of four minutes to get the ball rolling in the early-going for the Panthers, with Tommy Thorp and Connor Phillips both getting passes from Cook to set up the goals.

CJ Estep extended the lead to three, and then the advantage grew to five with Cook and Cormac Brown adding their goals on back-to-back rushes for Andover/Whitesville, scoring 31 seconds apart on unassisted tallies.

Friendship (0-2) with 15 seconds left in the first half, erased the shutout on a direct kick opportunity in front of the Panthers box. Garrett Miller elected to take the opportunity, and he cashed in on his first goal of the season to cut the deficit to four at the half.

The scoring was completed nearly seven minutes into the new set of time by Will Kent, who added his first goal of the season to finish off a 21-shot evening for the Panthers on the offensive attack, while holding the Golden Eagles to just six on defense.

Colby Gaines recorded the win in net for the visitors, stopping five shots. On the other side, Hunter Hill saved 13 shots for Friendship.

The two teams will meet again to wrap up the home-at-home series on Thursday at 6 p.m. in Andover. But first, the Golden Eagles will have a quick turnaround on the road, as they face Houghton Academy in a 5 p.m. contest.
