Monday Roundup: Rebels battle their way to straight-set sweep of Wellsville; Scio defeats GV in four sets

CUBA — At the start of a brand new week of action across the county, the Cuba-Rushford Rebels made sure they were at the top of their game on the volleyball court on Monday.

With a first set win already in their back pocket, they battled through a back-and-forth second set with Wellsville to power up what became a straight-set sweep of the Lions, as the Rebels brought out the brooms to move to a 3-1 start on the young season (25-23, 25-21, 25-15).

Inside the night’s second set, it was as close to a back-and-forth pace as you could imagine. With no lead growing larger than three, and no deficit smaller than a single point, Cuba-Rushford (3-1) had to wait until the very last stages of the set to capture their victory, going on to score four of the remaining six points to take the 25-21 win away from Wellsville (2-1).

It would set up big things in the last set of play for the Rebels, as they capitalized on all phases to collect the straight-set victory in front of their home crowd in the Wighthouse.

Caden Granger led the offense for Cuba-Rushford, scavenging a team-leading 10 kills to pair with his four aces at the service line. Devin Tullar added four more kills and an ace, while setter Caden Larabee dished out 16 assists to go with two aces.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Fillmore 49, Franklinville 44

FRANKLINVILLE — Trailing by two at the break, the Fillmore Eagles needed someone to step up and deliver the goods. In the second half, they managed to outscore the host Franklinville Panthers to pull ahead behind Will Valentine’s well-rounded game on both sides of the floor, emerging to lead the offense with a game-high 15 points while holding Panthers leader Logan Frank in check to escape town with a 49-44 edge, Monday night.

“It was nice of the guys to step up when Luke (Cole) wasn’t able to get the game he wanted to get,” Eagles coach Randy Crouch said. “Franklinville did a great job pressuring us, and contesting our shots. We struggled to get that clean look that we wanted. Logan Frank was a handful all night giving us fits, and we could not slow him down. But in the second half, Will really took over the game for us, and had some tough finishes, as well as limiting Frank on defense from his looks.”

In addition to his game-high efforts, he was also simultaneously busy off the glass, collecting 13 rebounds to complete his first double-double of the season for the Eagles (4-1). Out of the locker room for the second half, Fillmore was able to hold Franklinville to their lowest quarter of the evening, outscoring the hosts by a 12-7 margin to take a four point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

With the Panthers closing in with two minutes left to play, Levi Webb made sure the Eagles hung onto their lead, scoring his four points on two clutch jumpers inside to put the nail in the coffin on their fourth win in their first five.

Tobias Webb followed Valentine in the Eagles scorebook with 13 points, while Luke Cole was held to a season-low six points by the Panthers.
