Tuesday Roundup: Andover continues rolling along by coasting past Lady Jaguars; GV boys bounce back at home against C-S

ANDOVER — With their biggest win of the season over the road in Fillmore in their back pocket, it is safe to say that the Andover Lady Panthers are beginning to hit their stride in the more crucial time of the regular season, just a mere three weeks until Sectionals begin.

On Tuesday, they continued soaring above and beyond the basketball court, building their foundation in the first half before putting the hammer down at the very beginning of the second half, as they outscored the visiting Lady Jaguars of Genesee Valley by a 13-2 count to pull away toward their fourth straight win, and their fifth in six games with a 47-19 win on their home floor.

Just five scorers pasted their way into the scorebook for Andover (9-3), but it was a balanced effort across the board that saw everything fall into place as the night went on. Emily Wahl and Kelsie Niedermaier tag-teamed the offense by eclipsing the double digit plateau, with Wahl taking charge behind a game-high 16 points to go with 10 rebounds and six assists. Niedermaier added 12 points along with eight rebounds and four steals.

Lizzie Bentley led the Lady Jaguars (2-11) with a team-leading seven points. Hailey Herring chipped in with five points, while Isabelle Ordway and Adison Grusendorf followed with three and two points, respectively.

Both teams are back on the floor Thursday night, as the Lady Panthers hit the road for a 7:15 p.m. matchup against Bradford/Hammondsport, while Genesee Valley returns home to host Bolivar-Richburg at 7:30 p.m.

Arkport/Canaseraga 51, Belfast 44

CANASERAGA — Although Belfast put together a strong fourth quarter showing over the road on Tuesday, the host Lady Wolves of Arkport/Canaseraga did just enough to stave off a late rally, using a six-point edge at the half to proved to be the difference maker in their 51-44 edging of the Lady Bulldogs.

“We played a great game, and my girls are starting to click,” said Lady Bulldogs coach Jimmy Schneider. “They’re playing solid defense with it, and it’s starting to pay off after all of these hard practices. I’m getting pretty rounded scoring from all of them, and it’s just a matter of time for us to break things open. Arkport/Canaseraga is a solid team, and they beat us by 20 the first time we played. We only lost by seven tonight, but I am totally happy with our performance.”

The offense was balanced across the board for the Lady Bulldogs (1-9), who were up to the task of locking horns with the Lady Wolves throughout a close second half. Trailing by a 33-24 count going into the fourth quarter, it a frame where strides were hit to mount a late comeback against the hosts. But, the visitors in red and white ran out of time to complete it.

Junie Shaw led the Lady Bulldogs with a team-high 12 points. Mary Hamer pitched in with eight points, while Kaitlin Sadler, Alicia Borden, Anna Drozdowski and Emma Sullivan all rounded off the scoresheet with six points each.

BELMONT — There were lessons to be learned for the Jaguars of Genesee Valley after Friday’s tough loss to the hands of the Perry Yellowjackets on their home floor, this past Friday night.

With one game separating them from the Barkley Showcase at Alfred State this weekend, it was a chance to convey a rebounding performance with visiting Campbell-Savona in the Jungle for a meeting on Tuesday.

The bounce back was as large of a response as possible. So large for Genesee Valley, that it eventually created an offensive avalanche right from the get-go, as they mustered a 31-10 run in the opening eight minute period to strike the biggest of chords in their momentum-building 89-41 triumph over the Panthers.

The 31-point first quarter was only the beginning for the Jaguars (9-3), as it became one of three quarters where the hosts in white and green recorded at least 20 points worth of offense, resulting in a trio of players netting double digit figures with Cody Schneider leading the way with a game-high 26 points to go with 10 rebounds, completing his double-double.

Assisting in the efforts was Evan Windus, who had a double-double of his own by tallying 24 points and 10 rebounds. Brock Ellsessor followed behind by netting 19 points.

After falling to a 22-point decision to the hands of the Prattsburgh Vikings on their home turf, the Jaguars will now look to settle the score in a game of redemption. Only this time, it will be on neutral ground, as they headline the 6th Annual Dan Barkley Showcase with an 8 p.m. contest for the final time this season, Saturday evening in the Orvis Activities Center at Alfred State College.
