Monday Roundup: Lady Lions remain hot, cruise past Addison, Alfred-Almond to remain unbeaten; Rebels rally to knock off Wolverines with four-run 7th

WELLSVILLE — After a two-game sweep on a quiet Saturday morning this past weekend, the Lady Lions of Wellsville returned home with the chance to surf the momentum wave to bigger heights with another Monday night twinbill on the docket, with both Addison and Alfred-Almond coming to Tullar Field for visits.

Both games had a particular theme in common — offensive firepower. The Lady Lions provided it all once more to earn another doubleheader sweep, remaining unbeaten on the season at 6-0 by tallying a 10-1 victory over the Lady Knights in game one, and later, a 15-0 shutout of the Lady Eagles under the lights in game two.

The Lady Lions (6-0) saw Makenzie Cowburn dish out yet another stellar showing in the circle, holding Addison scoreless for the majority of the game up until the seventh inning when the drought ended off a solo home run. But Cowburn settled on a two-hit victory, handing out 15 chairs to the Lady Knights and walking just one. Cowburn was also one of four Wellsville hitters that recorded at least a pair of hits, going 3-for-4 with a double.

Helping further the cause was Maddie Spicer, who also went 3-for-4 and drove in three runs. Mallory Sibble, Matti Burke and Carly Young each had two more hits to chip in for the Lady Lions, who started with a 6-0 lead through the first three innings of play.

In game two, it was more of the same, as the bats connected right away in the opening frame, scoring eight of their 15 runs while holding Alfred-Almond to just one hit on defense across the scoreboard to finish off the night with a bang.

“It is nice to see our pitchers continue to throw the way they are, and the hitters are swinging the bats well,” said Lady Lions coach Matt Burke.

Marissa Ordway was handed the ball for a start in the final game, and delivered a shutout behind 10 strikeouts and just one walk. After Wellsville’s massive 8-0 lead in the first inning, they would extend their advantage to double digits by scratching across five more runs, three of them coming off of the team’s leading hitter, Marley Adams’ bat, as she drove home a bases-clearing double to the center field fence. The double was one of three total in the game for the Lady Lions junior.

Emma Dunaway and Mallory Sibble each had two more hits to add in.

The Lady Lions are back on the field Wednesday night at Tullar Field, as they welcome in the Genesee Valley Lady Jaguars for a visit at 5 p.m.

While Ross provided her strong showing in the circle, Friendship in return delivered at least a run in each of the five innings played. With Andover (0-2) starting the game with a 1-0 lead, they would go on to start the first three innings with a 10-1 lead, using their baserunning to their advantage. Belfast 15, Whitesville 10

BELFAST — 25 runs off 17 total hits were found in what was deemed a barnburner in Belfast, Monday night. Something had to give between the Lady Jays of Whitesville, and the host Lady Bulldogs when the two teams meet for the first of their two clashes this season.

The Lady Bulldogs fell behind early through the first three innings of play by as much as five, but it would all be made up and much more in the bottom of the fifth when Belfast exploded at the plate, accounting for an enormous 12-run frame to go ahead for good, as they went past the Lady Jays by a 15-10 count to pick up their third win in the first four games.

“It was one of those games where it looked like their first game, and it was one of our first games,” Lady Bulldogs coach Mark Sullivan said. “We didn’t field well, we didn’t hit well. I told my girls that if we play like this, it’s going to be a long night at B-R on Wednesday. There wasn’t any emotion, it was more of going through the motions. But good teams find a way to win, and we got the fifth inning rally we wanted and we closed the door the rest of the way.”

Although the Lady Bulldogs (3-1) gathered the bulk of their runs in the fifth, the team collected just six hits in all on offense, with Emma Sullivan leading the charge behind a bases-clearing double inside the offensive firestorm. Sullivan was also the winning pitcher inside the circle, striking out 11 Lady Jays and walking three.

As for the Lady Jays (0-1), they gathered 10 runs off 11 hits altogether, with their biggest frame coming in the third after taking a 2-1 lead, building upon it with a four-run frame. Rachel Jackson led the way on offense with a perfect 3-for-3. On the rubber, Zoey Lee struck out four and walked four in her three innings of relief.

Both teams are over the road Wednesday night with a pair of 5 p.m. first pitches, with Belfast paying a visit to Bolivar-Richburg, while Whitesville heads out to Cuba-Rushford.

CUBA — The Lady Wolverines capitalize on all fronts of their game, majority of which on the bases, as they scored at least a pair of runs across all five innings of action in Cuba, Monday night, as they rolled their way toward an 18-0 shutout over the host Lady Rebels.

The lead was built upon right out of the gate when Bolivar-Richburg (2-1) started off with an 11-0 lead through the first three innings. The team would collect seven hits at the plate with Madigan Harris paving the lane with her RBI-triple, a double and two runs scored. Kelsey Pacer recorded a triple within her two-hit day, while McKinlee Harris, Jianna Nix, Malayna Ayers and Gracie Zilker all had a hit each with Harris and Ayers combining to score nine runs.

In the circle, McKinlee Harris went the distance and held Cuba-Rushford (0-4) to just one hit, handing out six chairs and walking just one in her victory. On the other side, Sydney Howard struck out two and walked five in her four-inning start. Howard would also tally the team’s lone hit off a double.

Burrows, along with Scio’s Kiara Grover, engaged in a battle through the entirety of the contest, as both pitchers accounted for 12 strikeouts, with Burrows walking three and Grover handing out four walks. BASEBALL

BOLIVAR — Both meetings back in 2019 have resulted in victories for the Rebels of Cuba-Rushford, the latter of which clinched them an Allegany County Division I championship in what was then-head coach Steve Yatzkanic’s final season at the helm.

In their first meeting of the Pat Wight era, the Rebels paid a return visit to Bolivar-Richburg in the first of two big Allegany County League clashes this season. Right from the start, it was a back and forth fight all the way down to the wire, with walks and baserunning playing key roles in each team scratching across runs.

With the Wolverines taking the lead away from Rebels in the bottom of the fifth inning, it was held up until Cuba-Rushford provided the response of all responses — a four-run top of the seventh inning, with three of their runs scoring on passed balls with the bases juiced, as they avoided one final comeback from Bolivar-Richburg in the end to take the 10-9 barnburning decision on Monday.

Both Cuba-Rushford and Bolivar-Richburg collected seven hits at the plate, as the haymakers were delivered left and right in the first three innings, with the Rebels (2-1) delivering the first blow in the form of a four-run second inning to take a 5-2 lead on the Wolverines. The lead was cut down to as little as one before ultimately finding its way toward a 5-5 tie heading into the back half of the game.

Multiple lead changes were exchanged with the last of the sequence going in Bolivar-Richburg’s (2-2) direction in the bottom of the fifth inning, taking the 7-6 lead. But after a scoreless sixth inning, Cuba-Rushford fought back with a big four-run frame in the seventh to pull ahead for good, avoiding a late Wolverines comeback during their final at-bats to secure the win.

Jon White earned the win on the mound, striking out two and walking one in relief. Trent Chamberlain struck out five and walked six in his five-inning start for the Rebels. At the plate, Logan Lewis and Noah Siegel each had three hits, with Lewis driving home two runs and scoring three times himself. Siegel recorded a double and scored twice in his plate appearances.

For Bolivar-Richburg, Logan Bess went 2-for-3 including a double. Brayden Ellis added a triple and scored two runs, while Landon Danaher, Trey Buchholz, Wyatt Karnuth and Wayne Karnuth all had a hit to add. Caden Allen drove in two runs. On the mound, Wyatt Karnuth struck out seven and walked one in his five innings of relief.

Both teams are back on the field Wednesday night on the road, as Cuba-Rushford carries their momentum into Whitesville for a 5 p.m. first pitch, while Bolivar-Richburg prepares to pay a visit to Belfast for a 7 p.m. battle under the lights.

Cuba-Rushford 140 100 4 – 10 7 6

Bolivar-Richburg 221 110 2 – 9 7 2

C-R – Trent Chamberlain (5K, 6BB), Jon White (WP, 6) (2K, BB), and Logan Lewis.

B-R – Landon Danaher (3K, 5BB), Wyatt Karnuth (LP, 3) (7K, BB), and Brayden Ellis.

Wellsville 3, Bath-Haverling 2 (F-8)

BATH — When the Lions get together with Arkport/Canaseraga at a late time this season, it will be the second time that they have reached the extra inning limit. The first came Monday night when the team hit the road for Bath-Haverling, as the host Rams took Wellsville the distance and then some.

Fortunately for the visitors, only one extra inning was needed to complete the game, and they would have the run that decided the outcome, as they scored the lone run they needed to get past the Rams by a 3-2 count.

The Lions (2-1) sprung into action right from the start, as they scored two of their three runs in the opening frame to establish their lead. It was one that they held for the majority of the game right up until the fifth, when Bath-Haverling cut the lead in half with a run. Extra innings were forced a short time later during the last Rams at-bats, as they scored a key run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at two.

But in the top of the eighth, the deadlock was short lived, as Wellsville scratched across one final run before Logan Dunbar locked down the victory on the mound in the next half of the frame. Dunbar would strikeout six and walk three in his triumphant relief appearance. As for the start, Jere Havens struck out four and walked three.

At the plate, Dunbar had an RBI-triple, while Liam McKinley recorded a single, driving in a run and scoring once. Alex Ordiway scored a run himself to help the cause.

Wellsville will continue their road swing Wednesday night with a trip to Genesee Valley, as they visit to Jaguars for a 5 p.m. first pitch.

Belfast 15, Whitesville 1 (F-5)

BELFAST — As the old saying goes: There’s always a first for everything. For Belfast’s Carter Stout, his first career start on the mound turned out to be a memorable one.

Despite only needing five innings to finish the battle, the Bulldogs sophomore pitcher celebrated his first ever victory in no-hitting style, as he struck out 12 Whitesville batters and walked just one, as Belfast built a strong start from the beginning and never looked back on their 15-1 five-inning victory over the visiting Jays on Monday.

“He had a great night, and he pounded the zone all night long,” said Bulldogs coach Derek Kenyon. “He never gave in, and we had some long ends where he kept his focus on the bench. He’s going to be a great piece for us the next few years. He got his first start tonight, and he ended up with a no-hitter. You can’t ask for much more than that.”

Behind Stout’s dominant performance on the rubber, Belfast (3-1) was able connect with their bats, scoring 15 runs of 10 total hits, with a pair of Bulldogs scoring at least two hits to lead the way. Among them, Stephen Struckmann, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with a double, and two runs scored. Max Miller added in two hits himself including a double, and scored three times. Stout would score two runs himself to help his own cause for the hosts, who scored nine of their 15 runs in the first inning.

Whitesville (0-1) was led by Gavin Cutler, who struck out five and walked four in his four innings of relief on the hill. The Jays would find a way to end their shutout in the top of the fourth inning with their lone run.

Both teams are back on the field with 5 p.m. home contests on Wednesday, with Belfast preparing for a massive 7 p.m. bout with Bolivar-Richburg under the lights, while Whitesville heads back home to welcome in the Rebels of Cuba-Rushford for a 5 p.m. first pitch.

Zubikowski and Isaiah Voss both had three hits to lead the Eagles (2-1) offense, with Zubikowski launching a solo shot into orbit along with a two-run double, while Voss provided a triple, double and three RBI of his own to help the cause. Alfred-Almond 9, Genesee Valley 4

BELMONT — With the field drenched in water, the Jaguars of Genesee Valley did not have to travel very far to “visit” Alfred-Almond when Monday night came around. With both teams meeting at Genesee Valley, the host Eagles made sure they were right at home during their visit, as they scored four runs in the bottom of the first to build a lead that was threatened, but never lost, as they went past the Jaguars with a 9-4 win.

“We had a slow start, but the game was closer than it was indicated,” Jaguars coach Kevin Scott said. “The bats went cold on us, but we made some contact. We had some line drives, but they were right at them. It was one of those nights, and hopefully things will start to come around, and quick. We have Wellsville on Wednesday, so we have to get things going.”

The Jaguars (1-2) collected four runs across seven hits, with a pair of hitters recording at least a pair of hits. Although their driver’s seat position was threatened at times by the Panthers, the Golden Eagles remained buckled in, as they made it to the finish line with their first win of the season by a 9-6 count over the road on Monday.

Cam Loucks picked up the win on the hill for the Golden Eagles (1-2), as he struck out three and walked two in his three inning start. On offense, the Golden Eagles collected nine runs of five hits, using the bats and baserunning to their advantage to pick up the win. At the plate, Ian Romero led the way with a triple.
