Monday Roundup: Houghton Academy staves off late Andover rally to secure 51-48 victory; Whitesville, C-R, Andover among girls hoops winners
ANDOVER — Trailing by 10 to Houghton Academy entering the fourth quarter, the host Panthers of Andover put their fate within the hands of the game’s final period, aiming to make one last stand.
It all came down to one last shot for Andover with under five seconds left to play. With a three-point deficit to erase, Preston Ordway was in possession of the ball entering the Houghton Academy zone when he launched a potential game-tying three-pointer. But the shot would rim its way out of the basket, and off as the final buzzer sounded in Houghton Academy’s 51-48 edge over the host Panthers on Monday.
The problem surrounding Andover (3-5) for much of the season has been figuring out a way to start off their game. It got off to the right foot with four straight points in the first two minutes, but Houghton Academy went on to score eight of the last 11 points to take the one-point edge into the second.
In that next frame, a quick beginning for Chris Walker and the Panthers offense, gave them the lead, only for it to be taken away by Houghton Academy (5-1), and Lee Murray, who provided a lay-in from inside to go along with a three-pointer from Gennaro Pico from the right wing to start up a 7-0 scoreless run of Andover.
Later on, both teams engaged in back-and-forth affairs all the way down to the end of the half. The Panthers, at one point, would climb back to within four of the visitors in blue and white, but with assistance from Ayo Banwo and Pico from deep, Houghton Academy would take a six-point lead into the locker room.
Despite a breakout performance from Andover’s Chris Walker, Houghton Academy would outscore the hosts one more time in the third quarter before the junior captain was the forefront of the team’s rally in the final eight minutes of play, scoring eight of his team-leading 20 points to fuel the threat. But with Ordway missing the game-tying trey, Houghton Academy would manage to hang onto victory.
“Despite the loss, Chris Walker was absolutely incredible,” Andover coach John Dougherty said. “We came out flat, and we just didn’t play well enough offensively. We played great basketball in the last five minutes of the game, but we ran out of time.”
To go with his 20 points, Walker also pulled down 18 rebounds off the glass to complete his double-double. Ordway finished with 13 points, while Terhune was right alongside Walker in the fourth, scoring eight more points out of his 10 to fuel the 18-11 outscoring of Houghton Academy. As for the visitors, Banwo led the way with 20 points. Pico finished up with 17 points, while Loik Makuza had six to add.
Houghton Academy will hit the road for Lima Christian on Friday at 6:30 p.m, while Andover welcomes in the Scio Tigers for a visit on Thursday, with tip-off slated for 7:30 p.m.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Whitesville 35, Bolivar-Richburg 26
WHITESVILLE — The Lady Blue Jays of Whitesville outscored visiting Bolivar-Richburg in all four quarters played on Monday, but it wasn’t by much, as they managed to escape in a tight battle against the Lady Wolverines with a 35-26 victory in front of their home crowd for their sixth win in the first eight games.
“I was really proud of our effort tonight, particularly on the defensive end,” said Lady Blue Jays coach Aaron Rawady. “We knew points were going to be hard to come by because of Bolivar’s size in the middle, and athleticism in the perimeter. We had to make sure we got the stops defensively. Their bigs are a handful, and I thought we did a decent job limiting them. Overall, it was a good win for us against a strong team. Justin (Thomas) does a great job with his girls.”
The determining factor was the third quarter of play. With Whitesville (6-2) already taking ahold of a three-point lead at the half, they built upon said lead by holding Bolivar-Richburg to just six points in the midst of their 10-6 run to pull away just enough for the victory in the end.
The Lady Blue Jays were led by a game-high 18 point night from Vanessa Hall. Kennedy Bledsoe chipped in with seven points, while Serina Button had four points. The Lady Wolverines (6-3) were led by Aliyah Cole and Kelsey Pacer, as they came away with 11 and seven points respectively.

“I think 15 points is a career-high for Livia. She played with a lot of confidence tonight, which is awesome to see,” Lady Panthers coach Jake Bannerman said. “The girls were really doing a nice job of looking for each other out on the floor, and making that extra pass when they needed to. We looked like a good team there tonight.”
Wahl and Simon collaborated on two big runs in the first half for Andover (6-3) that saw them take a double digit lead at halftime, as the Lady Panthers held Jasper-Troupsburg to nine points in both the first and second quarters to capitalize on a 38-18 run altogether.
