Monday Roundup: Franklinville squeezes past Lady Eagles in closely-contested clash of State ranks; Lions volleyball locks up top seed in County Playoffs
FILLMORE — The Lady Eagles of Fillmore knew that after handing Canisteo-Greenwood their first loss of the season at the Barkley Showcase this past weekend, their next task was going to be a tall order.
How tall? Try the defending Class C State Champion Franklinville Panthers for size, led by arguably one of the best players across Western New York — senior superstar and Division I commit Dani Haskell.
No matter what obstacle stood in their way, the Lady Eagles had to go through it in some way.
Even though Haskell recorded a massive night from all over the field, Fillmore still put up one tough fight to hang right with them. A fight that turned into one last shot to take the game into overtime inside The Rock on Monday with a three-pointer. But, after releasing the potential game-tying shot, it would hit the front of the rim at the final buzzer to end the game, as Franklinville held off the Lady Eagles with a 53-50 victory.
“I am really proud of the girls. They were really up for this game,” said Lady Eagles coach Tom Parks. “We’re a confident bunch, and we know Franklinville is a defending State champion. We were right there, and we did all the right things right. We can nitpick on why we were three points short, but the bottom line is we really played hard to battle back from 10 points down at one point. We’re going to use this game as a bridge toward the end of the season, and hopefully through a deep run in Sectionals.”
The Lady Eagles (11-2) found their groove through the first two minutes of the game, using their defense to hold Franklinville scoreless while capitalizing on an early 6-0 run, led by a pair of wide open looks from underneath by Riley Voss and Carlee Miller. After a brief Lady Panthers timeout, it was only a matter of time before they hopped onto the board behind Haskell, who accounted for the next five points to cut the Fillmore lead to one.
Then, Hannah Roeske stepped up to the plate for the hosts in white and green with four more points in a row to give them the lead back once more. But the back-and-forth pace ended at the end of the first quarter with the Lady Panthers taking the lead into the second quarter with eight of the last 10 points.
The momentum for Franklinville carried into the second quarter, where they recorded their highest frame of offense in the game, putting together three separate runs to outscore the Lady Eagles by a 20-11 count to lead by 10 at the break.
After a narrow outscoring of the Lady Panthers to start the second half, the Lady Eagles marched their way back into the game in the final eight minute period behind some senior leadership, as Carlee Miller provided a big outing of offense with 11 of her 16 team-high points coming within the frame to get the team back to within one of Franklinville in the last 30 seconds of play.
Up 51-50, Haskell put away two shots at the line after Fillmore used up all their fouls to give in the late stages to increase the Franklinville lead by three. It would set up one last chance for the Lady Eagles to force overtime with eight seconds left to play, as the ball made its way to the outside perimeter where a shot was let go. But the ball hit the front of the rim, and away as time expired to allow the Lady Panthers to hang on for the victory.
Despite the narrow defeat, Fillmore saw two more scorers record double digits behind Miller in the scorebook, as Roeske and Emma Cole each mustered 12 points, with Cole falling a rebound shy of a double-double, tallying nine boards and five blocks. Riley Voss handed out eight assists, while Erin Mawn had five points to add.
Next on the docket for the Lady Eagles, they will try to extinguish the nine-game win streak belonging to the Whitesville Lady Blue Jays on their home floor this Friday night. Tip-off is slated for a 7:30 p.m.

Whitesville 55, Andover 41
WHITESVILLE — Both the Andover and Whitesville offenses provided solid outings of offense as the game went on. But one team had the faster start than the other. That team was the Lady Blue Jays, as they cashed in their biggest outing of the night by holding the Lady Panthers to just five points in the midst of their 21-5 run to pull ahead for good in their 55-41 victory to record their ninth straight win.
“We had a great first quarter,” Lady Blue Jays coach Aaron Rawady said. “We came out with a lot of energy, and we were efficient on both ends of the floor. Unfortunately, that didn’t set the tone for the rest of the game. Jake (Bannerman) made some great adjustments with his team, and they forced us into some tough shots, and some bad shots. Our weak side help defense was poor, and we didn’t defend the three-point line very well. But we sure showed some grit late to hold on.”
Both team’s three-point game was on the mark through the course of the evening, as each team combined to record 14 three-pointers in all with Whitesville (10-2) having the 8-6 edge behind Vanessa Hall’s career night, as she netted seven of the team’s eight three-pointers to put toward a game-high 36 points for the Lady Blue Jays. Kate Pensyl added nine points of her own, while Serina Button and Kennedy Bledsoe had four points each.
