Monday Roundup: Lady Eagles pitch 1st quarter shutout to help roll past Letchworth; B-R rebounds with big road win at C-S behind Sisson’s 1st half threes
FILLMORE — The Lady Eagles of Fillmore and their defense has been the pinnacle to their success during their reign from within the Tom Parks era. The biggest hope is that the defensive stoutness transforms into a tremendous amount of offense back down the court.
Monday night, despite a slow start, they were able to do that and much more against visiting Letchworth.
Both the Lady Indians and Lady Eagles went nearly half the time spent in the opening quarter holding each other on defense without a basket, but Fillmore’s defense took another humongous step forward and began to contend, as they kept Letchworth off the board while scoring 12 straight to start the night building on what became a 47-17 victory inside The Rock.
“We talked about our defense fielding our offense,” said Lady Eagles coach Tom Parks. “We want to be a strong defensive team, and that way if your offense isn’t cooking, the defense can help you stay in the game. Our defense out of the gate was solid, and that fueled a couple of easy baskets early on. Emma (Cole) is a strong player for us, and they really focused on trying to take her out of the equation, but it’s a credit to the girls around her to get the ball to her when they could. They never forced anything.”
Out of the 12 points posted in the first eight minutes of play, Emma Cole accounted for six of them while to jumpstart a massive 12-0 run to jump out on top first. Fillmore (3-0) would later extend their run to 18 in a row before Letchworth found the basket from just inside the arc to end the drought. Despite it, the Lady Eagles were able to make another run out of it, scoring seven more points in a row headed by one of two Jadyn Mucher three-balls to take a 25-2 lead at one point.
Letchworth would go on to finish the first half however with seven of the last nine points to add more to the scoreboard. After both teams traded just three points in the third quarter, the Lady Eagles settled back into their defensive stature and held their visiting opposition to just five more points in the last eight minutes of the game in the midst of their 17-5 run to pull away permanently.
Cole would lead all scorers on the floor with a game-high 21 points to go with 13 rebounds. Mucher, along with Hope Russell, followed behind with 12 points each, as Mucher grabbed eight more rebounds off the glass, while Russell gathered five steals. Preslee Miller had the team’s last two points to add on a basket inside.
Fillmore will now go for their fourth straight win to start their campaign on Wednesday, when they return to The Rock to face incoming Genesee Valley/Belfast in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.

Friendship/Scio 55, Mount Morris 46
MOUNT MORRIS — If there was any momentum to build from for Friendship/Scio, it was from their final game at their home Christmas Tournament this past weekend. After their first win of the season came against Hinsdale, it provided a flip of the switch on offense.
The question that remained now was: How long after turning it on could they keep the light bulb lit?
An answer of sorts came Monday night when Friendship/Scio went over the road in a long visit way from home against Mount Morris. Definitively, they would answer their self-imposed question right in the first eight minutes. Maybe perhaps the best stand of the season, thus far.
Right after the opening tip, Friendship/Scio went right to work, and provide a big punch towards the host Lady Blue Devils, accounting for a massive first quarter run to take a massive lead entering the half. Despite it, the hosts remained vigilant to try and develop a comeback plan in the fourth, but it would fall through in the end, as the visitors managed to hang on to everything they build to come away with a 55-46 road win.
“We showed up to play tonight,” Friendship/Scio coach Ashleigh Lewis said. “We dominated the boards tonight, and even though the turnovers were a little high, we started to feel a little bit of pressure in the fourth quarter. We came out defensively with a game plan, and we slapped them right in the face with it. We got after them, and we never looked back. We ran the floor, got out wide, made our passes. This is our best game of the season, and it shows. The team effort was outstanding, and we played the basketball we are capable of playing.”
Right off the bat, Friendship/Scio (2-2) took advantage of everything Mount Morris possessed, as they scurried off rather quickly with a massive 13-4 lead to build from going forward, led by an masterful performance on defense, as well as their rebounding department. Five different Friendship/Scio players all combined to produce 45 rebounds off the glass, with Kadence Donohue leading the way with 11 to pair with a season-best 21 points.
Friendship/Scio went on to outscore Mount Morris in the first three quarters of play, gaining the upper hand on a 42-27 lead heading into the fourth quarter, where the Lady Blue Devils attempted to gain some significant ground. But in the end, the early deficit out of the gate was proven to be too much to overcome.
Finishing behind Donohue and her phenomenal team-leading performance, was Nevaeh Ross, who tallied 16 additional points to pair with nine rebounds and seven assists of her own. Melana Davenport was the third scorer to cross into double-figure territory, netting 10 points.
On special teams, Claire Calhoun added in 10 rebounds, while Kiara Grover and Keely Sisson had eight, and seven each to add in respectively.
Next up on Friday, Friendship/Scio will head back home to take on Andover/Whitesville in a 7:30 p.m. battle in Friendship.

Oswayo Valley 31, Bolivar-Richburg 29
BOLIVAR — It all came down to the last five seconds of the game. After carrying a third quarter lead into the last eight minute period, the Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg were looking to do everything in their power to hang on until the very end.
Oswayo Valley on the other hand, was looking to do the complete opposite — provide a big rally from behind to put on some late pressure coming down the stretch. Down by seven at the start, the Lady Green Wave had just enough time to do so, as they found the basket in the more clutch of moments to take the lead away from Bolivar-Richburg, completing a fourth quarter run that saw them come out on top with the 31-29 win on Monday.
For much of the first half, the Lady Wolverines (1-3) fought right alongside Oswayo Valley, with no lead closing any smaller than a single point when both the first and second quarters came to a close. In the third quarter coming back out, it provided the hosts in white and red to extend that, with the tag team combination of Kayli Giardini and Jessica Majot having the honors of doing so with a 9-4 run of the Lady Green Wave to push their lead to six.
Bolivar-Richburg would attempt every last play in the book to maintain their lead on Oswayo Valley, but the visitors in green made a bold statement with an 11-3 fourth quarter run that saw them set up shop with the game’s final basket with mere seconds left in regulation, netting the largest of the bunch from inside to ultimately give them the win for good.
Majot would lead all Lady Wolverines scorers with a game-high 13 points, while Giardini followed closely behind with 10 points of her own. Destiny Cantrell had four points.
Up next on Wednesday, Bolivar-Richburg will look to regroup back on their home floor for the fifth straight time, when they prepare to welcome in the Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford for a 7:30 p.m. visit.

Andover/Whitesville 47, Houghton Academy 11
WHITESVILLE — Vanessa Hall may have perhaps had her most perfect of performances yet in her young career, as the Andover/Whitesville junior provided an incredible showing on offense while in turn, the defense held Houghton Academy to just 11 points across 16 minutes to seal up a 47-11 home win over the Lady Panthers on Monday.
“Vanessa is really, really good at taking what the defense gives to her,” said Andover/Whitesville co-coach Jake Bannerman. “She can do just about everything for us on offense, but it’s all just a matter of putting her and the team in those comfortable spots on the floor to capitalize on those chances.”
Hall was stellar from virtually everywhere on the hardwood for Andover/Whitesville (3-1), sinking four shots from inside, two shots from downtown and perhaps the most eye-grabbing statistic of the bunch — an absolutely immaculate 11-for-11 at the charity stripe to help electrify a game-high 21 points.
Her performance would help the hosts pace the offensive front, who wound up recording a big 20-6 first half run of Houghton Academy to settle into the driver’s seat, ultimately for the remainder of the game.
“The girls came out and worked really hard defensively, which helped us get some easy buckets on the transition,” Bannerman said. “We definitely have some more we need to do on offense, dealing with different defenses against a dominant player like we have in Vanessa. We are seeing improvement every day, so hopefully we can continue that as we get to the end of February.”
Finishing behind Hall was Maria Riloba, who recorded 12 points of her own. Rachel Jackson added in six points. For the Lady Panthers (3-1), they only saw two scorers reach the scoresheet, led by Jessica Prentice who scored nine of the team’s 11 total points. Emily Tankeh had the team’s final score on a basket inside.
Andover/Whitesville will take aim at their fourth win in their first five games with a 7:30 p.m. visit to Friendship/Scio in store on Friday, in Friendship. As for Houghton Academy, they head back home tonight, looking to rebound with visiting Hinsdale in for a 6 p.m. visit.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 38, Hinsdale 12
BELFAST — Genesee Valley/Belfast could not ask for a better start for their official home opener on Monday, as they produced a sound first quarter of soccer on both ends of the floor, holding visiting Hinsdale to just a single point in a big run they never looked back on to take the 38-12 decision in Belfast.
Mary Hamer led the way for Genesee Valley/Belfast (2-0), as she posted a game-high 15 points out of the team’s 38 total. Alicia Borden and Adison Grusendorf each added in six, while Anna Drozdowski had five.
On the other side, Jaylee Jimerson led the Lady Bobcats (0-4) with eight of the team’s 12 points. Fran Childs had the last four to add in.
A complete box score was not made available to report upon publication.
Genesee Valley/Belfast will look to keep the momentum in their favor on Wednesday, when they hit the road to visit Fillmore in a 7:30 p.m. battle. As for Hinsdale, they continue their road swing into Houghton Academy tonight in a 6 p.m. tip-off.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Bolivar-Richburg 52, Campbell-Savona 33
CAMPBELL — The message was loud and clear inside the Bolivar-Richburg locker room after their narrow defeat to the hands of Canisteo-Greenwood this past Thursday — a need to take care of business over the road against Campbell-Savona to provide the biggest of bounce backs.
The time to do that came on Monday. Although it was not the start that the Wolverines had hoped for to begin the night, the proceedings would lead toward a crescendo on defense, as they held host Campbell-Savona to just 19 points the rest of the way, with Aydin Sisson translating some of those efforts on offense in the second to pull Bolivar-Richburg ahead of the Panthers in what was a 52-33 triumph.
“The boys didn’t come out the way we had hoped, but we really buttoned it down afterwards,” Wolverines coach Jeff Margeson said. “I’ll admit, I was a little worried, but Aydin hit a couple of big threes in the second during opportune times to help Landon (Danaher) and Cam (MacDonell) get going behind him. We talked after the loss to C-G that we needed a team effort to beat C-S, and tonight our defense was our best offense. We held the Bolt kid to two points, and that was it. The boys worked hard, and this is the team I know can play basketball really well if they do it together.”
Both the Wolverines (4-1) and Panthers were neck-and-neck to begin the evening, going back and forth with exchanges that ultimately saw the hosts in white and blue take the one-point lead, carrying into the second. Hoping to finish out the first half strong, Bolivar-Richburg playing spoiler in the second quarter would loom large, as Sisson and his three-point game came to life, nailing both of his triples in the frame to kickstart the team’s 12-5 run of the hosts to take the lead away.
Leading by six at the break, the momentum and energy built soon erupted into bigger and better things for the Wolverines in the second half, as they essentially put the padlock on their advantage and threw the key out of the reach of Campbell-Savona, which allowed Landon Danaher and Cam MacDonell help fuel a 17-8 run to speed away.
Sisson led all Bolivar-Richburg scorers with a game-high 14 points, while Danaher and MacDonell finished with 13 points each. On special teams, MacDonell led the boards with seven rebounds. Sisson recorded six steals, while Danaher provided five assists to wrap up a solid Wolverines tenure on the hardwood.
Bolivar-Richburg will look to enter the Christmas Break with a 5-1 record in hand, when they return to action Friday night back on the road, visiting the Genesee Valley Jaguars in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off inside The Jungle.

Jasper-Troupsburg 64, Friendship/Scio 41
GREENWOOD — A massive fuse was lit in the first eight minutes of play by the Wildcats of Jasper-Troupsburg, as they pumped out one of two 20-point quarters on offense, starting with a first quarter run led by Jared Ainsworth that they would never turn their back on, as they rolled past visiting Friendship/Scio with a 64-41 win in Greenwood on Monday.
The pair of 20-point quarters recorded by Jasper-Troupsburg would doom Friendship/Scio (3-1) almost immediately out of the gate in each of the half-starting quarters, as the Wildcats, behind 10 of Ainsworth’s 12 total points, would roll their way toward a 21-7 lead of their opposition in the first quarter.
Friendship/Scio would navigate their way toward an outscoring of Jasper-Troupsburg to end the first half, as they saw two of Lazar Bulajic’s three triples go down in the netting to help power up the team’s best quarter of the night, attempting to cut their deficit down to 33-21 at the break.
With a boost of energy to end the half, the Wildcats erased that completely from Friendship/Scio’s grasp in the third, as they sealed the game for good in their favor with their best quarter coming behind an array of three-pointers from three different scorers, powering up a 24-9 run to pull away.
Bulajic and Brenden Loucks each led the scoring for Friendship/Scio with 17 points each. Jacob Golden chipped in with four points, while Ethan Davenport drained a three-pointer to round off.
Next on Wednesday, Friendship/Scio will now head for Franklinville to partake in Tournament action, as they get set to battle Westfield in a 6 p.m. tip-off.

Houghton Academy 43, Andover/Whitesville 34
WHITESVILLE — Houghton Academy and Andover/Whitesville provided a battle down the homestretch of their Monday evening tussle in Whitesville. For the hosts, a lead needed to be protected, while for the visitors, a chance to grab their first win in rallying fashion.
Down by one heading into the fourth quarter, the Panthers would play the last available card in their hand to do so. Behind the efforts of both Malachi DeGolyer and the three-point game of James Adenuga, Houghton Academy was able to grab that last run they wanted, outscoring Andover/Whitesville by 10 to take their lead away and provide one of their own until the finish, taking the 43-34 come-from-behind win.
Houghton Academy’s (1-2) fourth quarter run was the first lead they were able to hold since the opening quarter, when they got off to a narrow two-point, 8-6 lead on Andover/Whitesville out of the gate. Since then, the hosts were able to find their back in the fight with CJ Estep and a three-point game of their own from Jayden Dix provided a 20-20 tie going into the break.
Andover/Whitesville (1-4) was able to grab the lead away from Houghton Academy upon returning to the court, leading by one going into the fourth with Kohler Niedermaier stepping up to deliver a couple of inside baskets, as well as a Cormac Brown three-pointer to help further the cause.
But then, the Panthers were able to find their way to victory with a massive 15-5 run of Andover/Whitesville in the last eight minutes of play, as James Adenuga finished off a season-best performance by helping lead the way on both ends of the floor to lock it up. He would go on to conclude with a game-high 23 points for the visitors in blue and white.
Helping lead the charge on offense was Hugo Huang, who had nine points to add in. DeGolyer finished with eight points. On the flip side, CJ Estep led Andover/Whitesville with 11 points. Niedermaier finished with six points, while Luke Erdmann had five.
Houghton Academy will look to keep the momentum swinging in their favor back home tonight with a 7:30 p.m. tip-off slated against Hinsdale, while Andover/Whitesville will look to run the ship back into the right direction on the road themselves, visiting Genesee Valley on Wednesday in a 7:30 p.m. contest of their own.
