Monday Roundup: 2nd quarter run by Lady Wolverines earns them 10th victory of season in home win, Fillmore nets 10th straight triumph behind 57-46 win at Scio

BOLIVAR — In the first two seasons that head coach Justin Thomas has taken over the Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg program, the team has combined to net just six wins. This year, they have tripled that amount in 14 games, and entering into a brand new work week, the Lady Wolverines are on the fringe of recording their 10th win of the season.

To do it, they would have to start fast against Alfred-Almond on Monday. It didn’t happen right away, but when the second quarter came around, the rainstorm began with 16 straight points to the basket, accounting for what became an 18-3 half-ending run of the Lady Eagles to pull away toward a 44-23 home win for their 10th victory of the season.

“Things really clicked for us there, and that was really nice,” said Thomas. “We were average in the other three quarters, and we didn’t really crank it up too much in the second half. We did enough to keep pace with the rest of the night, but if we want to play with some of the big dogs, we need multiple of the second quarters we had tonight instead of just the one.”

Both Alfred-Almond and Bolivar-Richburg were slow out of the gates to begin the night, with Aliyah Cole putting together a strong first quarter despite it, for the Lady Wolverines (10-5). Just 12 points combined were scored between both teams, with Cole netting six of the eight points for the hosts. But it was the defense that paid dividends, as they nearly pitched a first half shutout from the field.

Alfred-Almond’s first official basket came after Bolivar-Richburg scored 16 points in a row to start the second quarter, as they landed a three-pointer from the right wing from Luci Lee with under a minute left in the first half. In all, it was an 18-3 jaunt for the hosts in white and red that allowed them to pull away for good, as they deadlocked with the Lady Eagles across the final timespan.

Cole finished with a game-high 20 points for the Lady Wolverines, grabbing 15 rebounds off the glass to go with four blocks. McKinlee Harris added in 10 points to pair with five assists and five steals. Kelsey Pacer provided six points of her own, grabbing 10 rebounds herself along with five steals. Madigan Harris and Jianna Nix rounded off the scoring for the hosts with four points each.

“With the first two years out of the way, 10 wins is great,” Thomas said. “Aliyah and Kelsey have both been here since the beginning, and the new additions have really come along to help us out. We’ve limited turnovers, we’ve started taking care of the ball much better. Our two juniors have really stepped up to lead the young bucks. Everyone is showing those glimmers of hope, and we have to keep building and building to keep that. For the most part, we’ve done that. But there’s still work to be done.”

Next up for the Lady Wolverines is Senior Night on Wednesday, as they honor three of their seniors with the Lady Bobcats of Hinsdale in town for a visit at 7:30 p.m.

Cuba-Rushford 47, Belfast 27

BELFAST — Each team fought their way through a first half battle on Monday in Belfast. With an eight-point lead heading into the break, the Cuba-Rushford lead saw a major extension in the second half right away. Multiple Lady Rebels stepped up to deliver the team’s biggest run, as they held the Lady Bulldogs to just five points to pull away for good toward a 47-27 bounce back win.

“Overall, it was a nice bounce back after a couple losses,” said Lady Rebels coach Aaron Wight. “We definitely struggled a little bit in the first half, but thankfully we had a few different girls really rise to the occasion. Taylor Searle and Sarah Cole both shot the ball very well, and that helped take some of the load off of Kate. Cameron (Shaw) had a good game inside, and she did quite a few of the little things for us.”

Cuba-Rushford (7-7) posted a pair of outscorings in the first half to take the lead heading into the locker room. But a momentum shift occurred in their return to the hardwood, as Searle busted out the three-point game with all three of her treys coming within the frame to pair with Kate Howe’s efforts to coast away toward a 23-5 run of Belfast to stay in the driver’s seat.

Searle led all producers with a game-high 13 points, including a 4-for-4 outing at the charity stripe to pair with her three three-pointers. Howe and Sarah Cole each chipped in with 10 points respectively, while Cameron Shaw had six.

The Lady Bulldogs (2-12) were led by Anna Drozdowski, who had all seven of her team-high points at the charity stripe. Mary Hamer and Alicia Borden followed with six respectively, while Kaitlin Sadler and Jaiden Enders rounded off with four points each.

On Wednesday, both teams are back on the floor with Belfast traveling to Houghton Academy for a 6 p.m. contest, while Cuba-Rushford returns home to welcome in Genesee Valley at 7:30 p.m.

Fillmore 53, Arkport/Canaseraga 43

FILLMORE — Both Arkport/Canaseraga and Fillmore put up a very narrow first half fight across the board, as they each exchanged an identical run to wind up tied at the break. But a flip of the script occurred in the remaining 16 minutes of play, as the host Lady Eagles held down the visitors to single digits the rest of the way to come away with a 53-43 victory inside The Rock on Monday.

“Ark/Can really shot the ball well in the second quarter,” Lady Eagles coach Tom Parks said. “They had half of their threes in that quarter, and that really made it a game at halftime. It was a tight battle going into the second half, and then we gave ourselves some breathing room. I give my girls credit, we tended to dig deep in the last half after playing out of character in the first half. We played more like ourselves, but at the same time, Ark/Can came to play.”

The first 18-9 run in the first half belonged to Fillmore (13-2), as they started their game off on the right foot. In the second quarter, the Lady Wolves came back with a run themselves, an 18-9 run of their own headed by their three-point game with three of the team’s six in all coming from within the frame. At the end of it, it would result in a 27-all tie heading to the break.

But in the second half, Fillmore nearly doubled-up Arkport/Canaseraga as the offense came to fruition to deliver outscorings in the final two quarters to collect much needed breathing room to stay ahead.

Hannah Roeske led the Lady Eagles offense with a team-high 19 points, while Emma Cole recorded a double-double inside with 11 points and 11 rebounds. Following Roeske in scoring was Carlee Miller, who had 14 points to go with four swipes. On the special teams side of the spectrum, Erin Mawn dished out four assists.

Fillmore now hits the road for their next contest on Wednesday, as they now look to avenge one of their two losses this season in Andover with a meeting against the Lady Panthers at 7:30 p.m.

“We’re looking forward to the rematch. We’re expecting nothing but another excellent game from Andover. Hopefully the girls can keep this game in the back of their heads, and head into this game.” said Parks.

Whitesville 40, Genesee Valley 37

WHITESVILLE — Almost half of Genesee Valley’s points over the road in Whitesville on Monday were found from the outer perimeter. Nearly every Lady Jaguar that found the scorebook recorded a three-pointer to help pace the offense in a fast first half.

But the host Lady Jays were a bit rejuvenated coming back out for the second half, as they outscored their opposition by a 24-10 count to take away the lead, but only narrowly, as they held on by the smallest of strings to secure the 40-37 victory over the Lady Jaguars.

Genesee Valley (2-14) bulldozed their way out to the strongest of leads they have had all season, tallying 17 points in the first eight minutes to earn the seven-point edge on Whitesville early on. They would go on to outscore the hosts one more time to take a double digit, 11-point lead at the break to keep the momentum in their favor.

But adjustments were made inside the locker room by the Lady Jays (12-3), as they accounted their biggest quarter of the game at the very beginning of the second half to hold the Lady Jaguars to 10 more points in the last 16 minutes of play, capitalizing on a 16-5 third quarter run to overtake the lead. The pressure was on late in the fourth quarter, but Whitesville was able to hang on by scoring eight of the last 13 points of the game.

Vanessa Hall led all scorers with a game-high 16 points for the Lady Jays. Serina Button added in nine points, while Rachel Jackson led the glass game with a team-high seven rebounds. Kate Pensyl grabbed five rebounds to go with four steals, while Serena Ainsworth had five more steals to swipe.

Genesee Valley saw Lizzie Bentley take charge with 11 team-high points. Adison Grusendorf and Hailey Herring each recorded seven points to help the cause, while Isabelle Ordway chipped in five.

Whitesville marks their return to the floor on Thursday over the road, as they prepare for a 7:15 p.m. contest at Alfred-Almond, while Genesee Valley continues their road trip onward to Cuba-Rushford on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Hinsdale 51, Houghton Academy 33

HINSDALE — The Lady Bobcats of Hinsdale saw an opening after a five-point lead of Houghton Academy was garnered in the first quarter. That opening turned into a broken floodgate, as they recorded a shutout from the field of the Lady Panthers to pull away toward a massive first half lead, and ultimately the win in their 51-33 victory on their home floor, Monday night.

The second quarter was a dominant one for Hinsdale (11-4), as they saw everything tilt in their favor across a game-changing 14-0 scoreless run of Houghton Academy that allowed them to remain in the front seat permanently. Kaitlynn Roberson and Kayla Brooks were two big reasons behind the Lady Bobcats offense, with Roberson leading all home scorers with 17 team-high points while Brooks followed behind with 11.

The Lady Panthers (7-7) saw just three scorers find the basket in all, with Jessica Prentice recording 18 of the team’s 33 points from inside. Sarah Retz favored the outside perimeter, sinking all three of the team’s three-pointers to put toward a 13-point effort, while Issabell Paschalis followed with the remaining two-pointer inside.

Both squads return to the floor Wednesday night, as Hinsdale hits the road to take on the Bolivar-Richburg Lady Wolverines at 7:30 p.m, while Houghton Academy returns home to welcome in the Belfast Lady Bulldogs at 6 p.m.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Cuba-Rushford 68, Genesee Valley 58

CUBA — Riding high off their third straight Andover Lions Club championship over the weekend, Genesee Valley looked to continue their offensive tear against an opponent that they for the very first time this season on Monday — the Cuba-Rushford Rebels.

The Rebels have seen their fair share of struggles as of late, but they pushed all their chips to the table after their latest win at Canisteo-Greenwood this past Saturday night behind a hot shooting offense. Through the first half, the Jaguars built one of their fire-starting beginnings in the first half of play. But then a volcanic eruption occurred.

In the second half, Cuba-Rushford began to control all offensive facets in the third quarter, recording what came to be the first of a pair of 20-point quarters, permitting them to take the lead away from the Jaguars for good to pick up one of their biggest wins of the season inside the Wighthouse in the shape of a 68-58 victory.

“These are the kinds of wins that can give you the push you need to finish well, or it can make you settle and think we are good enough,” said Rebels coach Bryce Ryan. “I have to give credit to the boys, they executed the game-plan flawlessly. We took care of the ball, we were patient with it offensively, and we defended at a high level. When we are focused for the whole game, we can play that way. This is our best game of the season, and it’s the first game that we have put together in full. I could not be more proud of the guys.”

The uprising began after Genesee Valley (12-4) after Cody Schneider and Evan Windus started out by combining for 14 of the team’s 18 points in the opening quarter to start up what became a quick four-point lead entering the second. It would soon become five after another narrow outscoring in the second quarter.

But the game saw a changing of the guard in the third quarter, as the Rebels (6-7) saw Trent Chamberlain and Andrew Clement take command of the offense themselves, combining for 17 of the team’s 24 points to account for a 24-14 run of Genesee Valley that propelled them to the front of the line with a 47-42 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Cuba-Rushford would tack on one last 20-point quarter in the last eight minutes behind Clement’s tag-team with Dan Emerson, scavenging a small 21-16 edge of the Jaguars with both seniors coming up with 17 of the 21 points to assist the Rebels in pulling away to stop the four-game win streak of Genesee Valley.

“Andrew Clement was very aggressive to the basket, and that has been something we have been looking for him to do,” said Ryan. “Trent Chamberlain was phenomenal, and he commanded the offense to get to the rim. Dan, Grady (McCumiskey) and Ethan (Brooks) all rebounded their tails off, and they made some big key baskets along the way as well.”

After it was all said and done, Clement led all Rebels scorers with a team-high 20 points, an effort that included three of the team’s four three-pointers. Chamberlain concluded with 16 points of his own, while Grady McCumiskey and Emerson provided 14, and 10 points respectively.

The Jaguars were led by Schneider, who went 11-of-13 at the charity stripe to finish with a game-high 29 points. Windus had 23 points to add, while Brock Ellsessor and Trevor Clark rounded off the scoring with four, and two points each.

Cuba-Rushford will have a quick turnaround tonight back inside the Wighthouse, as they look to keep the ball rolling with a 7:30 p.m. contest against the Scio Tigers, while Genesee Valley now regroups for a road trip to Fillmore and their final meeting with the Eagles on Thursday in a 7:30 p.m. game that will likely determine the top spot in Division I League play within the county.

Fillmore 57, Scio 46

SCIO — No team in the county has been on fire more than the Fillmore Eagles. Even with a few bumps and bruises, as well as a few illnesses along the way, it hasn’t stopped Eagles from finding the win column the last nine games straight. They had a chance to make it an Allegany County-leading 10 games Monday night in Scio.

With what appears to be a battle for the County Division I championship looming at the next exit on the freeway, a chance to build momentum against the Tigers appeared in front of them. As both teams battled their way through a first quarter tie, there were a pair of near deadlocks in two of the remaining three quarters of play.

But the Eagles would do just enough in the second quarter by holding Scio down to end the first half strong with the lead, using it to their advantage to record their 10th straight win by a 57-46 count over the road.

“We had too many empty possessions, whether it be a missed lay-in or a turnover against them. The guys were open, but we couldn’t drop the shots. We were down five or six at one point, but that’s when Fillmore capitalized on things that we could have done better at,” said Tigers coach Dillon McFall. “They’re a great team, a well-balanced team. The offensive side of the ball, they put five guys on the floor that do productive things. Rebounding, three-pointers, anything really. It’s tough to guard, and we gave up 57 points. It’s a little high for us, but we didn’t do a horrible job.”

The Eagles (12-1) brought an even balance of offense to the table, allowing them to break an 11-11 tie after the opening frame and connect with a 15-8 run of the Tigers in the second quarter. A run that helped determine the outcome at the final buzzer, seeing Fillmore go ahead with a seven-point lead at the half before gaining the two-point edge in the third and fourth quarters to secure their lead.

“The game seemed a lot closer than 11 points. What killed us was the free throw line. That was a big difference in the game,” McFall said. “I’ll give Fillmore credit, they played great defense along with it too. They did a great job keeping us in front of them, and everything that we had, we had to earn.”

Luke Cole led all Fillmore scorers with a team-high 16 points. Tobias Webb followed suit with 13 points of his own, while Will Valentine pitched in with 11 of his own. On the other side for Scio (11-3), Cam Loucks led all scorers with a game-high 19 points. Brendan Graves posted a 16-point effort.

Fillmore will now return home for what will be a war for the Allegany County Division I crown inside The Rock on Thursday, as they welcome in the Genesee Valley Jaguars in a 7:30 p.m. battle that will likely determine the top spot for supremacy. Meanwhile for the Tigers, they have a quick turnaround tonight by heading over the road to Cuba-Rushford for a 7:30 p.m. contest of their own.

Houghton Academy 56, Belfast 54

HOUGHTON — The Bulldogs and Panthers were engaged in a dead heat all throughout the night on the grounds of Houghton Academy, Monday evening. In fact, both teams scored the same exact amount of points in three of the four quarters on the scoreboard. Except for the fourth, where one team had the slight upper hand over the other.

Despite earning one last chance to come up with a fourth quarter-ending tie with under five seconds left, the Bulldogs shot went off the front of the rim and outside the paint as time expired, as Houghton Academy hung onto their 56-54 lead for as long as they could to secure the ultimate victory at home.

Each team raced to 13-13, 22-22, and 33-33 ties after the end of all three quarters leading up to the final eight minute period, where both Houghton Academy (9-3) and Belfast each saw someone step up to the occasion. For the Bulldogs (5-11), it was Matt Weaver and Carter Guilford who rose to the challenge, combining to score 14 of the team’s 21 points in the fourth quarter.

On the flip side, it was Gennaro Pico that brought the Panthers to life with a 23-point counterattack, as he accumulated 14 points of his own in the fourth quarter to set the record straight. When it was all said and done, Houghton Academy wound up having the last say on the offensive side of play, collecting the last basket to jump ahead of Belfast to record one last lead change of many throughout the contest.

Pico led all scorers on the floor with a game-high 25 points for the Panthers. Lee Murray and Ayo Banwo each pitched in with 12 points respectively, while Hugo Tang followed with the remaining four points. On the flip side, Weaver finished with a team-high 19 points for the Bulldogs, while Guilford and Stephen Struckmann followed with 13, and 10 points each.

Houghton Academy will hit the road Wednesday evening for their next battle, visiting the Friendship Golden Eagles for a 6 p.m. contest, while Belfast continues their road swing in Whitesville on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
