Monday Roundup: Fillmore girls survive another close battle with A-L to remain undefeated; Lady Lions roll past C-R, now prepare for early showdown with Keshequa Wednesday
FILLMORE — It can be a difficult task playing an opponent twice in just a matter of days. For the Lady Eagles of FIllmore, the Allegany-Limestone Lady Gators were next up on their docket for the second and final time in just three games, separated by six days.
The common denominator between the two battles ultimately carried over once again, with the final result of the game hanging in the balance all the way down to the wire, in The Rock on Monday.
With the Lady Gators finding their way to the basket with less than a minute remaining in regulation to tie the game, the pressure was now on the Lady Eagles to formulate a counter-attack of their own. After time wound down to under 20 seconds left, Mattie McCumiskey came up with a humongous three-point play at the charity stripe to propel Fillmore back over top Allegany-Limestone for good, as they fended off one last opportunity for a game-tying moment near the buzzer to escape the grasp of the Lady Gators with a 35-32 series-sweeping victory.
“It’s tough playing an opponent twice in six days and really, both of these games could have gone either way,” Lady Eagles coach Tom Parks said. “The season is still young and this group is still learning and trying to figure everything out still. They play with a lot of heart and while it hasn’t all been pretty, they are finding ways to win. Mattie has come up big twice now at the end of games, but the team collectively behind her keeps taking big steps forward.”
With a majority of time in the first quarter witnessing both teams fighting their way to the rim, the buckets would begin to fall down the stretch, with Allegany-Limestone garnering the game’s first lead off back-to-back flushes next to the basket to take a 9-6 lead with one minute remaining in the frame. The Lady Eagles (5-0) did manage to create a big burst of momentum right at the end of the stanza behind Emalyn Mucher’s buzzer-beating jump to cut their deficit down to one.
In the second period, the Lady Eagles shifted the momentum burst back into gear once again on both ends of the floor, as the defense began to freeze Allegany-Limestone in their tracks while connecting with an 11-3 run of the Lady Gators to climb over top and into the lead by a 19-12 count going into the break.
The Lady Gators were able to cut the deficit once again with a monstrous run of their own in the third quarter, narrowly outshooting Fillmore by a 14-9 count to set up some late fireworks in the last eight minutes of play. Within the frame, the Lady Eagles had to remain patient after the Lady Gators tied the game at 32 down the stretch.
In the final moments, the rest lay solely in the hands of McCumiskey, who came through for the Lady Eagles one last time with a gargantuan three-point play at the line to officially seal up the victory — their fifth in a row to open their campaign.
Emalyn Mucher led all scorers for the Lady Eagles with 16 game-high points. Morghyn Ross chipped in with eight points of her own, while McCumiskey finished with five.
Fillmore is back on the floor Wednesday night over the road in Andover, as they prepare for a 7:30 p.m. visit to undefeated Andover/Whitesville.

WELLSVILLE — The Lady Lions of Wellsville are off and running through their first three games of the season. After three successful trips over the road, they took their talents back home to the Lion’s Den to open up a brief two-game homestand on Monday.
In town are the Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford, winners of five of their first seven games. With two fires burning instantaneously in the early-going of the campaign, only one could be extinguished at the end of the evening.
After fighting back from an early deficit, the Lady Lions put it all together in the second quarter and ran off to the races, cementing their advantage behind a massive effort from Makenna Dunbar, as they went on to secure a big burst of momentum in time for Wednesday night’s showdown against Keshequa with a 57-29 win over the Lady Rebels.
“We were really balanced and solid all the way around tonight,” said Lady Lions coach Michelle Alvord. “Things were pretty slow at first, and then we worked our way back into the gist of things. Makenna started to get hot to lead us in the second quarter with that run. She played an outstanding game. It was our first home game, and we needed this kind of game to get us ready for Keshequa on Wednesday. After that night, we’ll know more about where we stand so far.”
The Lady Lions (4-0) found their rhythm after an early 5-1 deficit was overcome in the late stages of the first quarter, as they carried a 12-7 lead over the Lady Rebels into the second quarter, thanks to an 11-2 run to close out the frame. The frame of giant insurmountability would then begin to settle in for the hosts, as they ran off on Cuba-Rushford to close out the half with a 21-8 run that allowed them to remain in the driver’s seat for good.
Makenna Dunbar was Wellsville’s biggest driving force behind their offensive success, as she posted a game-high 22 points. Following up was Natalie Adams and her eight points, pairing them with five steals and four assists, while Reegan Perkins, Caelyn Stevens, Alexa Hennessy and Emily Stuck all had five points. Following a back-and-forth trade of baskets through the opening sequences that saw Avoca-Prattsburgh claim an early one-point lead, the Lady Titans added even more onto their foundation, as they shut down the Friendship/Scio offense from start to finish in the second quarter while punctuating a titanic 27-0 run to close out the first half on the most powerful of notes.

Both the Lady Green Wave and the Lady Wolverines (0-4) traded baskets across the first quarter, with the hosts in white and red looking for an early answer from the outside perimeter from Nadia Baldwin and Emma Sisson, as each Lady Wolverine shooter knocked down a triple to help force an 8-8 tie.
After Oswayo Valley managed to claim the lead across the second quarter in the midst of a defensive battle, they would build more onto their advantage with a massive second half run that saw them hold Bolivar-Richburg to just seven more points to wrap up what was a 20-7 run of the Lady Wolverines to lock up the victory.
