Tuesday Roundup: Bats come alive again, Southwick-Powers twists 2-hit gem to lead GV/Belfast to 8-1 win over And/Whi; B-R stays unbeaten with 5-3 road edging of Hornell

BELMONT — The bats for Genesee Valley/Belfast blossomed to life at the highest of levels during their latest road trip 24 hours ago at Arkport/Canaseraga, compiling 16 in all to jet towards a huge shutout win over the Lady Wolves.

On the next night, their aim was to carry over a humongous burst of momentum in their return back home. For the most part, Genesee Valley/Belfast did just that, but with visiting Andover/Whitesville hanging alongside them every step of the way, they would need an even bigger blast to stave off the pressure.

Ashley Burrows provided the most gigantic of blows.

With a 3-1 lead coming down the stretch and with the bases loaded during their term at the plate, the Genesee Valley/Belfast changed the complexion of the game with one swing, as she freed up all the bases with a deep ball to the outfield, cruising into third with a three-run triple to break the floodgates down in what ultimately became an 8-1 victory over Andover/Whitesville in the Jungle, in Belmont.

Genesee Valley/Belfast (8-6) kicked off the battle with a hot start in their opening at-bats, scoring a 3-0 lead behind back-to-back RBIs posted by Jenna Hill and Raygen Haggstrom, each blasting a single into the outfield to score Hannah Southwick-Powers and Sondra Guilford respectively, before Isabelle Male foresaw an opportunity to collect a third run off a wild pitch to the backstop.

The defense would then buckle down in turn to keep Andover/Whitesville (1-11) off the board, but not for much longer, as the visitors in purple cut the deficit down to a pair off of Gabbi Hall’s RBI single straight up the middle.

From the fourth inning on, the defense rested solely on the shoulders of Southwick-Powers, who allowed just one more hit against Andover/Whitesville while tossing four consecutive shutout frames to keep them off the board. She would finish the game with a magnificent two-hit twirl with three strikeouts and a walk.

While the momentum was being built on one side of the spectrum, the offense would syphon all of the energy that the defense built and apply it into the team’s big fifth inning tide-turner, using a three-run triple off the bat of Burrows to branch their lead out of reach of Andover/Whitesville permanently. Genesee Valley/Belfast added two more runs in the sixth to further cement the advantage.

In all, the hosts in black and gray scratched across eight runs off 10 hits at the plate, with Southwick-Powers leading the bats with three. Hill and Abby Sullivan each chipped in with two of their own.

For Andover/Whitesville, Gabby Terhune recorded a hit to pair with Hall’s RBI single on offense. In the circle, Makaila Brewster fanned two and walked four in her complete game. The visitors in purple will have a quick turnaround back on the road tonight, visiting Avoca/Prattsburgh in a 5 p.m. first pitch.

Genesee Valley/Belfast will look to keep their bats aflame at the plate, as they hit the road themselves on Thursday with a 5 p.m. visit to Cuba-Rushford.

Friendship/Scio 12, Cuba-Rushford 1

FRIENDSHIP — After a lengthy battle that saw Nevaeh Ross take complete control of the offense and defense for Friendship/Scio, the junior phenom was at it once again with another spectacular performance all around in the circle and at the plate, keeping visiting Cuba-Rushford at a near standstill while capitalizing on a 12-1 home win in Friendship.

Seven different hitters for Friendship/Scio (13-3) all posted at least two hits at the plate to power up a relentless offensive attack, which began in the bottom of the first with two of their three game-opening runs coming off a double from Morghyn Ross. After each team exchanged a scoreless second, the hosts built onto their lead another time in the third with an RBI double from Kadence Donohue, branching the lead to five.

The Lady Rebels (7-6) were able to navigate their way onto the board for the first time a brief moment later in the top of the fourth with some key baserunning by Aubrey Williams.

But the one run would be all they would muster, as Friendship/Scio officially slammed the door shut from within a four-run bottom half of the stanza — the game’s largest, paced by a three-run bomb by Ross to pull away from Cuba-Rushford insurmountably.

In all, Friendship/Scio recorded 19 hits at the plate, with Donohue, Claire Calhoun, Katie Lamberson and Logan Roberts all recording three hits each. Morghyn Ross, Kiara Grover and Avery Lamberson all had two hits to chip in. From within the circle, Nevaeh Ross held the Lady Rebels to three hits while handing out 19 chairs in her complete game victory.

On the other side, Cuba-Rushford was led by Taylor Searle on the attack, posting two of the team’s three hits including a double, while Jordyn Radomski singled. Radomski also struck out three during her four innings of relief on the mound. The Lady Rebels will look to regroup and rebound back home on Thursday, hosting Genesee Valley/Belfast at 5 p.m.

As for Friendship/Scio, they step right back onto their home field in Friendship tonight with a colossal battle against undefeated Bolivar-Richburg for the second and final time. First pitch between the local superpowers is slated for a 5 p.m. start.

Bolivar-Richburg 5, Hornell 3

HORNELL — The Lady Red Raiders of Hornell pushed it to the limit and gave Wellsville everything they had over the road on Monday, falling in a narrow defeat to the Lady Lions. But another monumental task was ahead of them upon their return home to the Maple City — undefeated Bolivar-Richburg, Tuesday night under the lights.

The hosts in red and blue would answer the call yet again by accepting another one of the highest challenges. At one point, they would hold a lead on the Lady Wolverines with the end of the game in sight. But as for the visitors themselves, a changing of the guard was provided at one of the game’s most crucial moments.

Down by one entering the sixth inning, Bolivar-Richburg provided one last and successful push towards the finish line with their biggest stand of offense, using a combination of special teams as well as a pair of key RBIs off the bats of McKinlee and Madigan Harris to fuel a go-ahead frame of offense that gave them just enough room to squeeze by and towards a 12th straight win to remain unbeaten with a 5-3 comeback win.

Right away, the Lady Wolverines (12-0) were able to grab a quick hop to their step during their opening at-bats, as they broke the ice with a sacrifice into the outfield from Allie Zilker, scoring Madigan Harris who helped ignite the offense early with her twin sister, McKinlee Harris with back-to-back lead off singles.

The lead would hold until Hornell managed to navigate through a strong start on the mound for Haley Mascho in the bottom of the third. With two on and two out on the board, Reagan Evingham pulverized a double to bring both Ireland Harrison and Parker Graham in on the play to help Hornell jump out on top with the 2-1 lead.

With Mascho and Evingham continuing to deal the next two shutout innings, which featured a fanning of the side by Mascho in the fourth and a 1-2-3 inning on defense for the Lady Red Raiders in the fifth.

Then, the gates would open for Bolivar-Richburg, as they shelled out their biggest frame of the night — a four-run top of the sixth headlined by a flurry of RBIs, one of an error by the Hornell defense to pair with McKinlee and Madigan Harris going back-to-back to regain traction on their first lead since the opening sequence.

The Lady Red Raiders would chip away at the deficit with one final run in the bottom of the sixth off an error, but the Lady Wolverines would hold strong on a quick inning in the field to end the game.

Bolivar-Richburg totaled five runs off 10 hits on the attack, with Malayna Ayers, McKinlee Harris, Madigan Harris and Emma Sisson all recording two hits. Garnering the win on the mound was Mascho, who struck out six in her complete game.

As for Hornell, Parker Graham and Reagan Evingham each had two hits. In the circle, Evingham went the distance behind seven strikeouts and three walks.

The Lady Wolverines will continue their road swing tonight with a massive 5 p.m. County showdown with Friendship/Scio, in Friendship.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 18, Andover/Whitesville 3 (F-5)

BELMONT — The Genesee Valley/Belfast offense was clicking on all facets on Monday against Andover/Whitesville, extending an early first inning lead with a massive offensive outing in the second that propelled them toward an 18-1 win after five innings in Belmont.

Genesee Valley/Belfast (6-6) recorded 18 runs off 12 hits, with four different batters recording at least a pair of hits to set fire to the offense. Amongst them was Thai Norasethaporn, who helped extend an early 2-1 lead against Andover/Whitesville with an RBI triple — one of his three hits inside an 11-run second inning that gave them all the room they needed to stay out in front.

Brody Heaney and Ryan Daciw each recorded two hits and drove in three runs, with Heaney scratching across three more runs himself. Evan Turybury drove in three more runs and scored three times off two hits to round off the attack.

Norasethaporn would go the first three innings with four strikeouts and a walk to pick up the victory on the mound for the hosts.

For Andover/Whitesville (4-7), Brody Carlin and Colton Calladine each recorded a hit to lead the offense. On the mound, Austin VanCuren struck out three and walked two during his inning of relief.

Cuba-Rushford 12, Hinsdale 2

HINSDALE — The Bobcats of Hinsdale gave visiting Cuba-Rushford an early run for their money on Monday during their Senior Night celebration, deadlocking the game at two. But the key to unlock it was used by the Rebels, as the offense came alive with the game’s last 10 runs in a consecutive fashion, using the momentum to roll away towards a 12-2 rebounding victory.

“We did a good job putting the bat on the ball tonight, and we had some timely hits,” said Rebels coach Pat Wight. “We made some good plays defensively behind Jake (Smith) tonight. Hinsdale came to play on their Senior Night, we were just able to have a few very timely hits to get the lead we wanted to have.”

After two scoreless innings were dealt by Jacob Smith and Damion Brown for their respective teams, Cuba-Rushford (8-6) found their way onto the board first in the top of the third, using a two-run double off the bat of Eli Sleggs to crack through the ice against the Bobcats. In response, the hosts used the bottom half to tie the game with two runs of their own.

But the deadlock was short-lived, as the Rebels broke it permanently with the game’s last 10 runs in a row, breaking the door down on a six-run top of the fourth propelled by a multitude of walks along with a two-run single from Finn Ricketts and a sacrifice fly to the outfield by Sleggs, pulling away from Hinsdale for good.

Smith and Ricketts led the bats for Cuba-Rushford with two hits. On the mound, Smith went the distance, holding Hinsdale (6-7) to just three hits while striking out eight and walking two.

The Bobcats saw Landon Wyant pace the offense with two of the team’s three hits. Xander Pascucci had the remaining hit, driving in a run in the process. On the mound, Brown fanned six and walked six in his four innings of work.

Both teams are back on the field Thursday night, as Cuba-Rushford welcomes in Genesee Valley/Belfast for a 5 p.m. first pitch, while Hinsdale hits the road to visit Andover/Whitesville for a 6 p.m. contest.
