Local competitors, powered by strong performances by Hornell’s 4x100 relay team, Dansville’s Wolf-Mialky, grace New York State stage at Middletown for NYSPHSAA Championships
MIDDLETOWN — With the Wellsville Lions bringing home not one, but two Class C New York State Champions in Xavier Scott and Kaylee Oswald, the rest of the field surrounding them were also very much in contention to claim gold of their own in Middletown this past weekend, as the home of the Middies was packed far and wide with some of the most elite talent around.
Among those competitors were Dansville’s Ivan Wolf-Mialky, who navigated his way to the podium with a bronze medal finish in the 400 hurdles. Also with a third place finish: the Hornell Lady Red Raiders and their 4x100 team of Riley Harwood, Selena Maldonado, Maura Khork and Ella White, as they received bronze for their efforts on the track.
White also finished sixth in her lone individual effort from the track for the Lady Red Raiders, crossing the finish line in that position during the 100 dash event.
Keshequa’s Riley Nageldinger picked up two Top-5 finishes in her respective events, placing third in the 400 hurdles and fourth in the 400 dash.
Arkport-Canaseraga’s Kohler Preston and Genesee Valley/Belfast’s Brayden Cooper each squeezed their way into the Top 5 themselves along the way, with Preston placing fifth in the 400 dash while Cooper finished fifth in the 200 dash. Cooper also finished seventh overall in the 100 dash.
Cooper’s teammate, high jumper Callahan Tallman, placed 14th overall in the high jump championship event.
Rounding off, Kylan Burdick provided a solid showing from the throwing pit throughout the day for Canisteo-Greenwood, as he placed eighth in the shot put event.
