Lady Lions start back-to-back Class B2 title defense on strong foot, as Cowburn, Dunbar combine for season-opening no-no against Allegany-Limestone

ALLEGANY — No bigger footnote was created to start the season off than by the Lady Lions on Wednesday.

While Makenzie Cowburn and Makenna Dunbar held the fort down from within the circle, the bats would soon follow behind at the plate, as Wellsville began their back-to-back Class B2 title defense with the biggest of bangs, recording a 19-0 shutout win at Allegany-Limestone against the host Lady Gators.

Four different Lady Lions (1-0) scored at least a pair of hits at the dish to pave the way for the offense, with Brazen Beckwith providing the most firepower with a perfect 3-for-3 outing which included a double and three RBI. Sawyer Burke, Natalie Adams and Haylie Lamphier all had two hits each, with Burke collecting a double to go with two RBI, two runs scored and two stolen bases.

Adams chipped in with a triple and three RBI of her own, while Lamphier had four RBI. Rounding off the attack was Makenna Dunbar, who had three more RBI to add in.

In the circle, Lady Lions phenom Makenzie Cowburn tag-teamed with Dunbar to provide a no-hit performance, as the two hurlers combined to record nine strikeouts and two walks.

Up next, Wellsville returns home to open up their home slate before they head down south for Spring Break, playing host to the first of two Section VI schools on the docket, Falconer, in a 5 p.m. first pitch at Tullar Field tonight. The Lady Lions will then follow it up with a visit from Sherman in a 12 p.m. Saturday afternoon matinee.
