Thursday Roundup: Fillmore starts scorching hot, Wolfer’s 5-RBI night paces team towards home rolling of And/Whi; Fri/Scio ladies outlast GV/Belfast in epic 11-inning Game of the Season

FILLMORE — The Lady Eagles of Fillmore made their presence known right from the bat, despite a slow start which allowed Andover/Whitesville to connect first in their opening at-bats on Thursday.

The hosts in white and green went on to shake it all off and fire their pistons into gear, accounting for at least a run across all six innings of play on offense while the defense kept their opposition off the scoreboard for the majority of the battle, as Fillmore rolled towards a 15-4 victory on their home turf.

“We had a hiccup to start the game off with a walk and error in the field, but then Saige (Friedl) pitched an excellent game and the defense was consistently good after the fact,” said Lady Eagles coach Jon Beardsley. “This may have been our best outing of offense all season. All the batters one through nine were making contact, we advanced and scored runners with some timely hitting, some nice bunts and some aggressive base running.”

Everything went as well as you could imagine on both sides for the Lady Eagles (9-6), as they fueled their way to a big start against Andover/Whitesville, doubling them up after they were to score in the visiting half of the frame first. After taking the 2-1 lead, the big inning came soon after, with multiple Lady Eagles getting involved to fork out a five-run second.

The lead would grow to five after Torann Wolfer began to make a big splash on offense, while a big two-run triple from Preslee Miller in the bottom of the second branched out their lead insurmountably for good.

Wolfer would go on to add two more RBI in her third trip to the plate, blasting her second two-run hit of the game with a two-out double that was smacked to the outfield gap. The Fillmore senior would finish with a 3-for-5 outing at the plate with five RBI total and two runs scored, while Miller scratched across four times herself.

In addition, Saige Friedl, Emily Krzeminski and Oakley Frazier all had two hits to help finish a 10-hit presence. In the circle, Friedl picked up the win behind five strikeouts and five walks.

“Kada Frazier did a great job behind the plate, and Torann had an outstanding game on offense. We had 14 girls get an at-bat tonight, and every one of them saw action in the game. They all made some great positive contributions.” said Beardsley.

Andover/Whitesville (6-7) saw Makaila Brewster also strikeout and walk five in her complete game effort on the mound. Their one run was accounted for by Olivia Waters, who flew out to right to bring home Zoey Lee, who led off reaching on a hit-by-pitch.

The visitors tallied just six hits altogether, with Aislinn Hamilton leading the offense with a pair. Andover/Whitesville will return home to host Bolivar-Richburg in a 6 p.m. battle tonight in Andover.

As for Fillmore, they are now off until after the weekend, where they will close up their regular season slate with a 7 p.m. matchup against Cuba-Rushford on their home turf.

Friendship/Scio 9, Genesee Valley/Belfast 4 (F-11)

BELMONT — As you could probably imagine, the scene at Genesee Valley is one that could be described as a madhouse. Not exactly like the Madhouse on Madison where the Chicago Blackhawks of the National Hockey League play, but you get the point.

It was a madhouse on Jaguar Drive, Thursday night where all around the field, both teams were as well represented as possible. It almost seemed like at times that a chance to play for a Class D Championship right at the very end of the season, was being decided.

Through it all in what was more than likely the County's Game of the Season, nearly two full games of softball were played between both Friendship/Scio and Genesee Valley/Belfast. The two foes have already met twice so far, but their third matchup? – Nothing else compares.

The rollercoaster was a thrill ride through and through up until the final pitch was thrown in the bottom of the 11th inning. That was when Friendship/Scio was able to put the finishing touches on a 9-4 victory after breaking a 4-4 extra-inning tie between the two clubs with a big run in the visiting half of the penultimate frame to roll away towards clutch and triumphant success.

“They found the holes, and we didn't in that 11th inning. It was one of the best games I have ever been a part of across all the sports I've been coaching,” said GV/Belfast coach Mark Sullivan. “There was great pitching, great defense. This was our third time playing them this year. They kept it close in the first game, crushed us in the next. We beat some tough teams this week to get ready for this one, and we were right in this game.”

In the marathon battle that would last for over three hours, it wouldn't have been done without some excellent defense on both sides, with Nevaeh Ross and Hannah Southwick-Powers going toe-to-toe with one another in their respective circles.

Friendship/Scio (12-4) was able to grab an early start they wanted with the game's opening run in the first. From that point until the fourth, both pitchers continued to deal haymakers. But it would eventually lead towards the hosts finding their way onto the board next.

The Lady JagDogs (6-9) were able to scratch across their first pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth before Friendship/Scio was able to take the lead right back with two runs of their own coming later on, in the top half of the sixth. But the response from the hosts would be just as quick, as they came up with the game-tying run to ultimately force an extra-long session of extras.

In those extra innings, the defenses began to buckle in after three scoreless innings kicked it all off. Then the offenses began to kick into gear, with Friendship/Scio scoring six of the final seven runs, including a five-run 11th inning to put a bow on an incredible night of softball in Belmont.

Friendship/Scio would total nine runs off 15 hits at the plate, with Kendra Gleason and Keely Sisson leading the charge with three hits each on offense. Jadeyn Shields added two hits herself. Within the circle, the win belonged to Nevaeh Ross, who struck out 17 and walked a pair of runners in her five-hit performance.

As for the visitors, Harley Proctor pitched in with two hits while Abby Sullivan had a double. On the mound, Hannah Southwick-Powers did everything in her power to hang right alongside Ross, settling with a season-high 10 strikeouts to pair with a couple of walks in her complete game.

At the plate, Harley Proctor scored two of the team's five total hits, while Abby Sullivan pitched in with a double. Genesee Valley/Belfast will hit the road early Saturday morning for a 10 a.m. first pitch slated against host Arkport/Canaseraga.

“I am so happy with the girls and how they're playing,” said Sullivan. “For both teams to stay mentally strong this long, it was incredible. The crowd that was on hand, made it felt like a Championship game. We hit the ball against Nevaeh a lot, and even though we struck out 17 times, this kind of game is going to raise their confidence a ton. It scares me a bit, but we have to keep this energy up if we want to keep playing the way we want to go into Sectionals with. In all, you never mind losing a game like this.”

Friendship/Scio is now off until Monday when they take a road trip themselves, visiting Campbell-Savona in a 5 p.m. contest of their own.

Friendship/Scio 100 002 000 15 – 9 15

Genesee Valley/Belfast 000 201 000 10 – 4 5

F/S – Nevaeh Ross (WP) (CG, 17K, 2BB), and Morghyn Ross.

GVB – Hannah Southwick-Powers (LP) (CG, 10K, 2BB), and Harley Proctor.

Bolivar-Richburg 10, Avoca/Prattsburgh 1

AVOCA — The bats for the Lady Wolverines woke up and fast to begin their fourth straight day of action, this time over the road in Avoca, as they recorded a positive first round of at bats while Jessica Majot controlled much of the strikezone by battling through a pitcher's duel to help provide a 10-1 win over the hosts on Thursday.

Bolivar-Richburg (14-1) would start things off with a pair of hits along with some special teams play to put towards a 4-0 lead early on against Avoca/Prattsburgh. With the quick lead in hand, it was now Majot's show to control up against Annabella Putnam, who was doing the same dealing as Majot was for much of the game.

Majot would carry a no-hitter up until the fourth inning, when Avoca/Prattsburgh blasted a double into the outfield to break up the bid. The hit would ultimately lead to the team scoring a short time later, cutting their deficit to three.

The Lady Wolverines senior would finish with seven strikeouts in her tossed one-hitter.

But the widening of a lead would continue to take effect for the Lady Wolverines, as they went on to post a five-run frame highlighted by a bundle of special teams play before McKinlee Harris finished the scoring with a seventh inning RBI-triple.

McKinlee would finish as the team's leading hitting, garnering two doubles, three RBI and two runs scored. Haley Mascho and Malayna Ayers each had two hits and scored an RBI, while Ayers chipped in with two hits, scoring three runs herself. Rounding off was Madigan Harris, who provided a double in addition to the slew of hits.

Avoca/Prattsburgh was led by Putnam and her 10-strikeout, four-walk performance.

Bolivar-Richburg will close out a very busy week of action tonight with a 6 p.m. road trip in store against Andover/Whitesville.

Bolivar-Richburg 400 005 1 – 10 9 1

Avoca/Prattsburgh 000 100 0 – 1 1 4

A/P – Annabella Putnam (LP) (CG, 10K, 4BB), and Riley Stowe.

BASEBALL

Genesee Valley/Belfast 19, Friendship/Scio 5 (F-5)

BELMONT — It was a game that saw Genesee Valley/Belfast took complete control of after Friendship/Scio found their way onto the board first on Thursday, as they scored 12 of their 19 total runs right in their first session at the plate to set the tone right away, coasting towards a 19-5 victory in Belmont after five innings of play.

Four different JagDogs (7-9) would help fuel an offense effort that saw 19 total runs come across off 17 total hits, with the bats coming alive almost instantly after the opening pitch, as they countered Friendship/Scio's early 1-0 lead and brought 12 unanswered runs across to take the lead away, ultimately for good.

Genesee Valley/Belfast would go on to score all 19 runs in the first two innings of play, flooring the gas pedal down in the driver's seat and coasting away towards victory.

Trent Scott was among one of the four JagDogs that recorded at least a pair of hits, going 4-for-5 with a double, three RBI and three runs scored. Elden Aquila would have a similar stat-line himself, but would have three hits at the plate to go with three RBI and three runs scored. Max Wedge chipped in with two hits of his own, three RBI and three runs scored, while Carter Stout drove in three runs off two hits.

On the mound, the win belonged to Stout and his two-inning start, as he went on to fan five and walk one.

As for Friendship/Scio (6-10), they scored five runs off just one hit, with the majority of their runs coming from special teams, including towards the end when they tallied three runs in the top of the sixth to chip away at their deficit.

Leading the way was Joey Bednez, who fanned and walked two in his start on the hill. At the plate, Nick Sortore was the team's lone hitter, who scored a single. Friendship/Scio will pay a visit to Hinsdale on Monday beginning in a 5 p.m. first pitch.

For the JagDogs, they are back in action bright and early Saturday morning, as they head out to visit the Arkport/Canaseraga Wolves in a 10 a.m. showdown.

Fillmore 21, Andover/Whitesville 7 (F-5)

FILLMORE — Like Genesee Valley/Belfast accomplished right out of the gate, the Eagles of Fillmore did the same thing on Thursday in their return to the field, as they scored a fast and loud response towards Andover/Whitesville after they took an early lead, using the second inning to their fullest of advantages to force the game to an early end with a 21-7 victory.

Four different Eagles (12-2) were all hitting the ball with sound efficiency, as Alex Ellsworth, Zach Sisson, Aiden Wagner and Graham Cahill all had three hits each to ignite the offense for the home team, with Cahill, Sisson and Ellsworth all belting a triple to get things going on the attack.

It was a 1-0 lead after the first inning for Andover/Whitesville (3-11) to control, but that was lost an inning later when the Fillmore bats began to pick up steam, scoring a massive 10-run second frame to spring ahead of the visitors with all the room they needed in hand to secure the win in the end.

On the mound, Luke Colombo recorded six strikeouts and walked two in his four-inning start for the Eagles. In relief, Brandon Buck fanned two and walked two in the final inning the contest would see.

For the visitors, they collected seven runs off six total hits, with six of those runs coming in the last sixth inning to chip away at their deficit. But the lead in hand was insurmountable enough for Andover/Whitesville to keep their bats quiet at the plate, securing the win in the end.

Layton Miller recorded a pair of Andover/Whitesville's six hits in the game. On the mound, Luke Erdmann fanned three and walked one in his relief appearance. The team springs back into action, this time back home tonight, as they host the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg in a 6 p.m. first pitch.

Fillmore will stay home and welcome in Cuba-Rushford for a 5 p.m. visit on Monday.

TRACK

B-R boys, Wellsville girls split tri-meet in Bolivar

BOLIVAR — Thursday marked the final day of action on the track and in the field for many Allegany County teams, before closing out the season with perhaps two of the biggest meets of the season coming up within days of one another – the annual Elks Spring Day in Wellsville, as well as the County Championship meet.

For Wellsville, it was a chance to put on a show before taking center stage themselves, as they traveled along with Genesee Valley/Belfast for a visit to Bolivar-Richburg. At the end of the day, a split of the tri-meet was provided by the Bolivar-Richburg boys and Wellsville girls teams, as they recorded top honors behind multiple top finishes.

The Bolivar-Richburg boys finished a mere three points ahead of Wellsville to record the top overall finish behind eight first place victories, two each from four different performers to lead a 68-point first place effort. From the track, Ethan Coleman and Hunter Stuck led the front with wins in the 100 and 200 dashes for Coleman, while Stuck swept both the 110 and 400 hurdling events.

From the field, Lloyd Kinnicutt provided a sweep of both throwing events with winning distances on the shot put and discus, while Rudy Polk continued his dominance in the sand bunker, garnering winning distances on the long jump and triple jump.

As for the Wellsville boys, they finished behind the Wolverines with a 65-point third place finish behind six victories themselves, with Noah Joslyn leading the way with a pair, scoring top wins in the 800 and 1600, while Eli Brophy rounded out the distance-running events with a top time in the 3200 run.

Gavan Dickerson would add the team's final win individually for the Lions, placing first in the 400 sprint. Along the way, Wellsville would collect a pair of relay victories with Joslyn, Brophy and Dickerson all lending in a hand on both the 1600 and 3200 relay triumphs.

Genesee Valley/Belfast would place third overall behind just one first place win from Morgan Torrey, who had the winning height at the high jump.

As for the ladies teams, the ultimate win belonged to the Lady Lions, who scored 75 first-place points to claim victory behind five first place finishes, and a bounty of secondary finishes. Leading the wins was Alyssa Dorrough, who came up with one in each facet of the meet, scoring wins in the 100 dash from the track, as well as the shot put from the field.

F/S boys, Fillmore girls triumphant at Houghton College

HOUGHTON — While the action raged on off to the Southwest in Bolivar, up north at Houghton College, a four-way meet between the rest of the County's teams came to fruition, as Friendship/Scio, Cuba-Rushford, Houghton Academy and Fillmore all met up at Burke Field to decide it all before an explosive final week of action begins to set in.

The events would come and go, but in the end, the evening would belong to both the Friendship/Scio boys and Fillmore girls, as they rode the wave towards glory with first place finishes in their respective division to cap the night on a bright note on Thursday.

The Friendship/Scio boys were able to do just enough to wedge their way past Fillmore to avoid a meet sweep by both Eagles teams, as they relied on four first place finishes to pair with a bounty of secondary finishes to fuel their 46-point first place finish overall.

From the track, the team was led by Jordan White, who had two overall wins, and Greg Wesche, who scored multiple secondary finishes to go with his first place win in the 800 sprint. White was able to pick up his two wins in the 200 dash and the long jump, respectively.

Adding a win from the field was Shawn Patrick, as he recorded the longest distance in the sand bunker, in the triple jump.

Fillmore's boys team finished just two points behind Friendship/Scio, as they claimed second place overall behind seven first place finishes in their 44-point effort, with five different individuals all tallying wins for the Eagles. On the track, Jack Cool (400 dash), Matt Majoros (1600 run) and Eli Strickland (3200 run) all helped set up shop, while Brian Ashton (shot put) and Ray Muzaid-Omar (high jump) helped finish off the wins with theirs from the field.

The Eagles would also collect a pair of relay finishes, crossing the line first in the 1600 and 3200 relays.

In third place, the Cuba-Rushford boys saw five first place finishes come to light in their 39.5 point finish, with Noah Siegel and his sweep of both the 110 and 400 hurdling events lead the way. Hunter Rix and Tristan Clayson rounded off the individual wins with triumphs in the 100 dash and discus, each. The Rebels would also garner a 400 relay win along the way.

Houghton Academy would finish fourth place in both boys and girls divisions, with the boys claiming 2.5 points, while the ladies did not record a point.

As for the ladies, a 63-point medaling finish from the Fillmore girls gave them the victory behind six total victories, with Kiera Engler leading the pack with a pair, one in each side of the meet, placing first in the 800 spring and in the long jump from the field. Adding help was Sophia Templeton with her win at the 100 dash, while Rachel Hatch and Sophia Pastorius helped provide a sweep of both throwing events.

Hope Russell finished off the wins with a high jump victory herself. Fillmore would also claim a win in the 400 relay.

The Cuba-Rushford ladies would record 27 points to put towards a second place finish themselves, with three different individuals paving the way. Sofia Riquelme and Libby Drum were spectacular for the Lady Rebels, garnering medals from the track in the 400 sprint and 1500 run each, while Lillie Kreamer took her talents to the field with a high jump victory to add in.

Friendship/Scio's ladies would place third overall with 19 total points, and a pair of first place finishes coming from Lexi Crossley (200 dash) and Jenn Dickens (100 hurdles).

All four teams will now begin preparations for another long day of action on Saturday, as they head for Wellsville to partake in the annual Elks Spring Day celebration bright and early in the morning.c
