Monday Roundup: Led by quick start by Ward and explosive first half by Lady Eagles, Fillmore provides sweep of Wellsville at home, on road; Fri/Scio ladies complete comeback in OT over J-T
FILLMORE/WELLSVILLE — Both Fillmore and Wellsville were two busy venues for some soccer on a gorgeous Monday evening, as both boys and girls squads did battle with one another up north and right here at home, with the Fillmore boys and Wellsville girls squads each hosting their home opener.
Up north in Fillmore, it was the defending Class D State Finalist’s first night on their home turf after opening their first two games on the road. Although the Eagles were away from action for over a week, it didn’t slow them down one bit.
Coming out of the gates strong against the visiting Lions to start the night, was senior phenom Mitch Ward, as he posted Fillmore’s first two goals to help set up shop for bigger things to come after halftime, concluding the night with a hat trick to put towards what was a 5-0 shutout to open up their home slate of games.
“I think the boys were really hungry to play at home for the first time tonight. Mitch got us going early, and I felt like our guys in the middle of the field did a great job of winning their battles and controlling the tempo,” said Eagles coach Jarrett Vosburg. “Zach Sisson in particular, he had a great first half of winning his individual battles. I was really proud of our effort, and Wellsville has some very good, very young players who are only going to continue to get better as the season progresses.”
Mitch Ward wasted no time flying out of the gates at a high rate of speed for the Eagles (3-0), as he posted his opening pair of goals in the first 10 minutes of play. The first coming after carving through the Wellsville defense parked out front of the net, providing a shot through a screen in front of Logan Dunbar in between the posts that winds up going underneath him and in to break the ice.
Ward’s next goal came no more than five minutes later, dropping a dump-off pass to Zach Sisson on the way into the zone before getting right back on the rush in the right wing again. After finessing his way past the Lions (2-3) defense again, his shot went opposite side far post on Dunbar to branch out the early lead.
The offense continued to attack Wellsville deep in their own defensive zone all throughout the first half, and it would carry on in the second half, when more pieces to the puzzle were added. Eben Schilke would have a hand in the next two Fillmore goals via assist, with the first being sent along to the front off his corner kick. Soon after, it was met with a perfect header by Layton Sanasith, nearly five minutes removed from the kick at center.
Past midway, Fillmore would finish off the scoring with their last two goals in a five-minute span, beginning with Ward’s hat trick-clinching goal off of Schilke’s final helper at the 67:56 mark. A short time passed, and Jack Cool put a bow on the home-opening victory with his penalty kick goal with eight minutes remaining.
All five goals were scored off 27 total shots at the Wellsville cage, as they outshot the Lions by a 27-3 count. Luke Colombo would make all three saves to pick up the shutout, while Dunbar made 22 saves.
While the Fillmore boys issued a shutout up north, down south, it was a similar case scenario for the Lady Eagles of Fillmore in Wellsville, where the Russell connection was simply unstoppable once again.
The Hope and Grace Russell tandem paid a ton of dividends throughout the night to spoil Wellsville’s home opener, as Hope scored five of the team’s seven goals, while Grace handed out assists four times to set the table for a 7-0 shutout victory to resume kickstarting their Class D title defense behind their fourth straight win.
The Lady Eagles (4-0) took a 4-0 lead on Wellsville after the first 40 minutes of play, with Hope Russell scoring a first half hat trick to boost her total to 14 on the season. Grace Russell would hand out assists on two of the goals, while Emma Beardsley provided two of her own, including the hat trick-clinching assist for Russell at the 26 minute mark.
Two minutes removed from taking a 3-0 lead on the Lady Lions, Beardsley would then dish the ball out to Malory DeRock to close out the scoring.
Three more goals found the back of the net for the Lady Eagles in a span of seven minutes to officially end the attacking on the frontlines, all recorded by Hope (two goals, assist) and Grace (goal, two assists) Russell.
Preslee Miller would record a pair of saves in goal for the Lady Eagles to tally the shutout, while Makenna Dunbar made 13 saves for Wellsville (0-4-1).
All four teams are back in action in the coming days. Here’s a look below at when they will be in action next:
Fillmore boys — at Genesee Valley/Belfast, Thursday at 7 p.m. (at GV)
Fillmore girls — vs Andover/Whitesville, Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Wellsville boys — vs Bolivar-Richburg, tonight at 5 p.m.
Wellsville girls — at Canisteo-Greenwood, Wednesday at 7 p.m.
Cuba-Rushford 2, Hinsdale 1
HINSDALE — All that the Rebels of Cuba-Rushford needed was the first 40 minutes to make an impact on Monday, scoring both of their goals while the defense kept Hinsdale off the board until the end, as they rebounded towards a 2-1 road win.
“The last two losses were tough,” said Rebels coach Nick Perillo. “Anytime we play multiple close games in a row, it can get very tiring. We’re on track for five games in six days this week, which is difficult. The boys really grinded this out tonight to get the win. We are proud of our guys, and we’re excited to see if they can do it again tomorrow.”
It took a little midfield battling with the Bobcats to help ignite the offense for the Rebels (3-2), as Braeden Wight got them on the board first right at midway, picking up a Kaden Bell feed and knocking it home to take the lead.
The advantage was held onto and extended upon right before the first half ran out of time, with Jacob Smith knocking in a big goal for the visitors in white and blue for a 2-0 lead at the break.
In the second half from start to finish, the defense would hold down the fort successfully, despite losing their shutout with five minutes to go. Jake Elliott would net Hinsdale’s (0-4) lone goal to cut the deficit in half, but the Bobcats would run out of time.
The Rebels outshot Hinsdale by a 10-6 count, with Jack Frank recording the win behind five saves. On the other end, Ethan Chapman made eight saves for the hosts.
Cuba-Rushford will head back home and play host to Friendship/Scio tonight in a 5 p.m. contest, while Hinsdale continues searching for win number one with a 6 p.m. road trip to Andover/Whitesville in store for Thursday, in Andover.
Hammondsport 5, Andover/Whitesville 1
HAMMONDSPORT — The Hammondsport Lakers catapulted from the starting gates hot on Monday, as their offense fired on all cylinders with a trio of goals in the first 20 minutes of play, before adding their last two in the first seven minutes of the second half, as they rolled towards victory by a 5-1 count over Andover/Whitesville.
Luke Szathmary was the Laker who gave the team a fast start in both halves of action, recording a hat trick beginning with his first nearly two minutes after the opening kick at center. The team’s lead was extended just past midway, with Alex Braun scoring one of his own off a penalty kick opportunity.
With a 2-0 lead in Hammondsport’s hands, CJ Estep would close the gap to one for Andover/Whitesville (1-4) a short time later by taking a solo run at the Lakers goal, and burying his chance at the 22nd minute. But as the visitors in white managed to trim down the edge, the hosts in purple re-sharpened back up with a regaining of a two-goal lead with TyChristopher Ritter finding the back of the net not even a minute later.
That would give the Lakers a 3-1 lead to work with at the half, as they used every bit of momentum left in their tanks to branch their lead insurmountably on Andover/Whitesville, as Szathmary finished off his hat trick in the first 10 minutes with a pair of goals, one being assisted by Braun right at five minutes in, and the next coming two minutes later off the team’s second executed penalty kick.
Landon Ordway would go on to make six saves for Andover/Whitesville, who will look to bounce back on Thursday back home with a 6 p.m. home battle slated against the Hinsdale Bobcats, in Andover.
Northstar 5, Houghton Academy 1
ROCHESTER — Right off the bat, the Northstar Christian Knights pumped the tires with a brilliant first half start against Houghton Academy on Monday, as they established their ground to garner a 3-0 lead at halftime that they would not let up. Despite losing the possibility of a shutout, a two-goal night from Lorenzo Danesi was what helped them propel towards a 5-1 home win over the Panthers.
The lone goal for Houghton Academy (2-2) was recorded by Lucus Matias right near the midway mark of the second half, as he found his way past the Knights defense after a pass was dished to him by Brian Patipewe on the way in, sending it into the goal. It was one of just three shots that the team would have against the hosts in black and red, as Northstar outshot the Panthers by a 9-3 count.
In goal, Marco Zanini would set aside three shots for the visitors in white and blue.
Houghton Academy is back on the field Thursday night at home, as they welcome in Friendship/Scio for a 5 p.m. first kick.
GIRLS SOCCER
Friendship/Scio 3, Jasper-Troupsburg 2 (F-OT)
SCIO — If you’re a fan of wild games with a smidge of suspense, Scio was the place for you on Monday. For all those adjectives, and then some.
Visiting Jasper-Troupsburg kicked off by opening the door to the driver’s seat, taking an early first half lead into the break with some quick connections. The lead would hold, but the question in the air that remained — how long?
In the second half, host Friendship/Scio answered that question in one of the most brilliant ways possible — a comeback of comebacks.
It was the moment of the season thus far for Friendship/Scio, as they battled all the way back in the late stages of the second half to force overtime against the Lady Wildcats. An extra period of time where one goal can decide it all, thanks to the newest rule change for girls soccer that began this season.
Logan Roberts would have that goal after it was set up by a Jasper-Troupsburg penalty inside the goalkeeper’s box nearly midway into overtime. That would allow the Friendship/Scio senior a chance to end the game with one kick. That one kick would give them their first win of the season, as the hosts ended the night in style with a 3-2 overtime victory over the Lady Wildcats.
“It’s one of those things where you can see that it’s beginning to pay off for these girls,” said Friendship/Scio co-coach Eric Weinman. “We were fortunate to have practiced some penalty kicks during practice this past week, so to see this situation come up for us tonight, it was beneficial. It’s a very good win for the girls, and I have a lot of them that are young. It all came down to them putting the hustle and effort into this.”
Before Friendship/Scio was able to mount their comeback, they had to first fight their way back from behind after Jasper-Troupsburg worked their way onto the board with the game’s first two tallies. The first would come knocking on the door right away, as Aubrianna Bradley struck while the iron was hot with a solo rush to the goal just five minutes in, to break the ice.
A 2-0 lead for the Lady Wildcats soon came after, and it was a score they held onto through the halftime break, as Grace Staats dished along an excellent ball to the feet of Emily McCaig, who put the finishing touches on the play to extend the lead at the 28 minute mark.
Now the comeback was on.
Friendship/Scio (1-2-1) warmed up through the first few minutes of play with Jasper-Troupsburg, but after time passed, the deficit was cut in half with the first of two Lexi Crossley goals, with Morghyn Ross handing out both passes on each play. The second goal would come after a midfield battle consumed much of the time in the second half, as Crossley and Ross connected with six minutes remaining in regulation to tie the game up.
That ultimately forced overtime between the two clubs, and not long into the session, Friendship/Scio was presented with a golden opportunity to write an excellent end to their latest chapter, as the Lady Wildcats were penalized inside their own box to set up a penalty kick. Logan Roberts elected to take the shot, and it was one that she absolutely buried into the back of the net just over three minutes into overtime to officially lock up the comeback win.
24 total shots between each team was recorded, with Jasper-Troupsburg taking the narrow 13-11 edge over Friendship/Scio. In goal, Nevaeh Ross and Grace Drumm combined to make 11 stops, while Kahley Stewart set aside eight shots on the other end for the Lady Wildcats.
Friendship/Scio is back on their home field in Scio on Thursday, as they kick off their annual Amy MacMichael Tournament with a first-round matchup against Cuba-Rushford set to begin with a 7 p.m. first kick. Hammondsport and Franklinville will open the tournament beforehand, with a 5 p.m. opening round battle of their own.
Canisteo-Greenwood 1, Bolivar-Richburg 0
BOLIVAR — Both Canisteo-Greenwood and Bolivar-Richburg engaged in midfield warfare for much of the battle. With seconds left until halftime, time was running out on a chance to perhaps uneven the playing ground going into the second half.
With a late push being made down the field, Kylie Williamson would make the most out of the opportunity.
The Canisteo-Greenwood junior found gold in an early clutch situation over the road against the Lady Wolverines, as she capitalized on what turned out to be the game’s only goal right before the opening 40 minutes came to a close, helping the Lady Redskins secure a big shutout by a 1-0 count all the way to the finish.
Williamson’s goal was tallied with 19 seconds left in the opening half, as she assisted in beginning a late offensive rush into the Bolivar-Richburg (2-3) zone. Possession would then find her feet off a pass on the way in from Mya Rexford just outside the 18, working her way past the Lady Wolverines defense for a shot into the lower corner of the cage to create a large enough break in the ice to keep the hosts in black and red distanced away from them.
The shot was one of 15 total that the Lady Redskins accounted for on the attack, as they went on to outshoot the Lady Wolverines by a 15-6 total count. Brooke Byrd would make all six stops in between the posts for the visitors to secure the shutout, while Kyla Gayton set aside 14 shots for Bolivar-Richburg.
The Lady Wolverines are back on their home field Friday night to start a back-to-back homestand this weekend, welcoming in Andover/Whitesville first for a 5 p.m. visit before hosting Wellsville the next morning, on Saturday at 11 a.m.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Arkport/Canaseraga 3, Fillmore 2
FILLMORE — Two early competitive sets saw the defending Class D3 Champion Lady Eagles of Fillmore create an opening towards victory in each of them, as they shoved visiting Arkport/Canaseraga towards an expeditious brink from within The Rock on Monday. Just one more set separated them from bringing out the brooms.
But from that point on, the Lady Wolves had other plans.
The third set for the visitors in black and teal would be used as motivation, as they hung right with the Lady Eagles through and through, navigating their way towards an opening themselves, one that saw them perform a complete flip of the script — a reverse sweep, scoring wins in each of the last three sets of the night to come away victorious with a five-set (18-25, 18-25, 25-22, 25-20, 15-13) comeback victory.
The Lady Eagles (2-1) were led by their setter up front, Zoe Hubbard, who dished out a team-high 10 assists to help the offense find its rhythm. On defense, Savannah Hosmer furthered the cause behind her five digs and two aces, while Jenna Austin chipped in with a pair of digs and two more aces from the service line.
After Fillmore saw the first two sets go their way to push Arkport/Canaseraga towards an early curtain call, the third set would remain as competitive as ever, with each team providing scoreless runs before the Lady Wolves were able to find the momentum they wanted to build on going forward at the end, using it to complete the reverse sweep.
Statistics for Arkport/Canaseraga were not provided upon publication.
The Lady Eagles will resume play back on their home floor Thursday night, as they host a rematch of last year’s Class D3 Final with their neighbors from down the road — the Houghton Academy Lady Panthers, beginning at 6 p.m.
GIRLS TENNIS
Wellsville 5, Canisteo-Greenwood 0
WELLSVILLE — The Wellsville Lady Lions remained red hot to start their season. With wins already in each of their first three matches, they made it four in a row back home on Monday, coasting past visiting Canisteo-Greenwood with dominant play in all five contests to take the 5-0 shutout over the Lady Redskins.
Charging the efforts was a near immaculate display of tennis from all three singles matches for the Lady Lions (4-0), which saw Samantha Bidzerkowny and her 10-0 pro-set shutout at second singles pace it all with her victory over Danica Taft. Near shutouts by both Meagan Riley at first singles, as well as Sarah Mattison at third singles, would be used as more fuel to the team’s fire, as each competitor took 10-1 and 10-2 decisions, respectively over Trinti Tigner and Bailey Hiesel.
In the doubles department, the trend continued with a 10-2 victory from the first doubles team of Caitlin Bittel and Hanna Miles, as the two Lady Lions soared to triumph with their win over Canisteo-Greenwood’s Mackenzie Clark and Alyiah Tigner. Rounding off the match victory for the hosts was the second doubles team of Kelsey Seely and McKenna Wonderling, as they rolled towards a 10-3 win over Serenity Sanford and Amelia Stewart.

Fillmore 4, Addison 1
HOUGHTON — While the Lady Lions continued their hot tear through the opening portion of their season, the Lady Eagles of Fillmore were poised for a comeback. On Monday, they would deliver just that.
With two forfeit victories already in the wagon, the team would go on to record two more wins in action, one from each division of competition over visiting Addison, totaling four for the match to put towards the 4-1 win over the Lady Knights at Houghton University to get back on track.
Aside from a third singles forfeit win for Kali White, the Lady Eagles (2-2) garnered just one more win in that field of competition from their first singles starlet in Olivia Chiu, as she warded off Addison’s Karlee Boutelle with a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Molly Mahoney and Amy Majoros would help finish off the triumph with a first doubles win, led by a second-set shutout, as they rolled past Jessi Balance and Katie McNeil with a 6-3, 6-0 win.
The second doubles team of Emma Hopkins and Annika Wiltsey would tally the final forfeit win for Fillmore to help close out the home victory.
