Thursday Roundup: B1 champion HAC handles B2 champion Wellsville in State Qualifier tennis rematch in Dansville; And/Whi, Fillmore, GV/Belfast girls soccer all record shutout wins

DANSVILLE — It was a date on the tennis court that has been circled since the start of the season just a few short weeks ago. A tremendous championship-winning season for the Lady Lions of Wellsville came to a screeching halt last Fall in the Class B State Qualifier match against Harley Allendale-Columbia.

They would receive a chance to earn redemption on Thursday, when the two defending champions in each Class B bracket sparred in Dansville to settle the score one more time. But for the Lady Wolves, they would have Wellsville’s number once again, as they scored four big wins against the Lady Lions to reign supreme again with a 4-1 victory.

Wellsville’s (4-1) lone win came in singles competition from their top singles player, Samantha Bidzerkowny, who will remain red hot to start her campaign behind a hard-fought victory over Harley Allendale-Columbia’s Ellie Swan, as she rebounded from a first-set defeat to capture the remaining two sets in style with a 3-6, 6-0, 6-3 decision.

Hanna Miles and Peyton Cawley both fell at second and third singles for the Lady Lions, but it was easy for the Lady Wolves to capture the wins, as Miles fought tough in a 7-5, 6-1 defeat, while Cawley was downed in a 6-4, 6-4 decision.

Harley Allendale-Columbia also claimed a sweep of both doubles matches to finish off their match victory of the Lady Lions, as the first doubles team of Caitlin Bittel and Sarah Mattison fell 6-2, 6-4, and the second doubles duo of McKenna Wonderling and Delilah Dimpfl lost in a very tough 6-4, 6-3 decision.

The Lady Lions are back on the court tonight, as they return to the Lion’s Den to host Addison in a 5 p.m. first serve.

GIRLS SOCCER

Andover/Whitesville 4, Jasper-Troupsburg 0

JASPER — For the first time this season, the Andover/Whitesville girls have come away victorious on Thursday.

In their latest road trip to Jasper-Troupsburg, they had to ward off a pressurized first 40 minutes of play from the Lady Wildcats to get their engines rolling after halftime. When they did, the avalanche of goals soon followed, as they found the back of the net four times — two of them off the foot of Makenna Vance, as Andover/Whitesville strolled towards a 4-0 shutout.

“It’s no secret that we have struggled to score this season, so it was nice to see the girls put in a few tonight,” said Andover/Whitesville co-coach Aaron Rawady. “It wasn’t easy though. Jasper-Troupsburg was really tough defensively all game and they made us earn everything. We have to give a lot of credit to them and their coach. Our defense did some good things tonight as well to keep us in the game in the first half until our offense got going in the second half.”

Andover/Whitesville (1-4) found the smoothest of grooves from all angles through the first 40 minutes of play while holding Jasper-Troupsburg without a single shot on the counterattack, delivering multiple cracks into the surface of play with many opportunities to strike against the Lady Wildcats. After a scoreless frame zoomed by, the visitors went to work behind the guidance of Vance, who scored two goals in a 10-minute span to double their lead at an instant. Graci Lewis-Ellison and Leigha Phelps each had an assist on the pair of goals.

Both Phelps and Lewis-Ellison would navigate onto the scoresheet themselves later on in the half, with the former adding hers first with 11:40 to go by electing to take a massive penalty kick in front of the Jasper-Troupsburg net, finishing it off moments later to take a 3-0 lead. To finish off the scoring, Lewis-Ellison added her score just over three minutes later.

The three goals for Andover/Whitesville stemmed off of 11 total shots against Jasper-Troupsburg, as they went on to record an 11-1 shot advantage against the Lady Wildcats. In net, Olivia Waters made the one save to record the shutout for the visitors. As for the Lady Wildcats, Annabelle VanNorman made eight saves in goal.

Andover/Whitesville is right back on the road tonight to Hinsdale, where they will meet with the Cuba-Rushford Lady Rebels in a 5 p.m. first kick.

“Overall, it was a good night for the girls, but it does not get any easier as we play a tough Cuba-Rushford team in less than 24 hours that is well-coached and playing at an extremely high level right now.” said Rawady.

Fillmore 4, Friendship/Scio 0

FRIENDSHIP — After knocking off the Lady Lions of Wellsville back on Tuesday, the Lady Eagles of Fillmore continue to soar to big heights in their latest trip over the road on Thursday, as the defending Class D State Finalists struck while the iron was hot right away against Friendship/Scio with three first half goals to set the tone in what was a 4-0 shutout to remain unbeaten with their fifth straight win.

Almost immediately after the kick at midfield, Fillmore (5-0) broke the ice first in a big way, as Morghyn Ross delivered the first punch of the game on her solo score, six minutes in. Just four minutes later, the Lady Eagles doubled their lead with the first of two Mylee Miller scores, as she connected with the back of the net off a pass sent along by Kallie Pastorius.

Over midway into the first half, the visitors in white and green continued to cement their lead with Lily Sisson recording the team’s third goal off a pass from Tenlee Miller, sending them into halftime with a 3-0 lead. Following a lengthy battle across the field for possession, the goal-scoring concluded with 10 minutes remaining, as Mylee Miller recorded her second of the game off a pass from Ross.

The four goals came off a 22-shot bonanza issued by the offense, while the defense stood tall in the process, as they claimed a 22-0 advantage against Friendship/Scio (2-4). In net, Grace Clark recorded the shutout for Fillmore, while Avery Lamberson made 18 saves for the hosts in black and gold.

Fillmore is back on the road after the weekend, as they pay a visit to Arkport-Canaseraga on Monday for a 7 p.m. first kick. As for Friendship/Scio, they will have first crack at the Lady Wolves themselves when they come to Friendship for a 1 p.m. visit, Saturday afternoon.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 5, Bolivar-Richburg 0

BOLIVAR — A thunderous hammer was brought down by the Genesee Valley/Belfast offense during Thursday’s visit to Dunsmore-Latimer Field in Bolivar, as Madison Yackeren provided the biggest crackle of lightning of them all with four of the team’s five goals, while Bayleigh Tallman issued one of her own along with three assists to power up the team’s 5-0 shut out of host Bolivar-Richburg.

Four of the five goals for Genesee Valley/Belfast (4-1-1) were collected right in the first 40 minutes of play, with Yackeren connecting with their first three off three assists from Tallman in a nine-minute elongation. Just over a minute later close to the midway mark, Tallman would get onto the board herself with a shot that hit square off the crossbar and into the net for a 4-0 lead.

The scoring would conclude at the midway mark in the second half with Yackeren’s fourth goal upon entry into the Bolivar-Richburg (2-4) zone, ripping a shot from within the 18 right into the net. The five goals for Genesee Valley/Belfast came on 16 total shots, as they outshot the Lady Wolverines by a 16-0 count.

In goal, Morgan Yackeren recorded the shutout for the visitors, while Rylee Whiting made 11 saves for the hosts in black and red.

Both teams are now off from action until Wednesday with a pair of 7 p.m. contests, as Genesee Valley/Belfast hits the road for Wellsville, while Bolivar-Richburg hops on the bus and visits Fillmore.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Fillmore 3, Andover/Whitesville 0

ANDOVER — The Fillmore Lady Eagles were in full comeback mode back over the road a single day later, as they left their straight-set defeat to the hands of Bolivar-Richburg in the rearview mirror and rebounded with a straight-sweep of their own against Andover/Whitesville, claiming the 25-7, 25-6, 25-21 victory in Andover.

The Lady Eagles (4-3) were paced by a strong offensive performance from Mya Keeler, as she recorded eight kills to go with six aces. Annalisa Bailey chipped in with six more kills of her own to pair with five aces, while setter Alex Robbins handed out five big assists to help get the offense set up at the front of the net.

Andover/Whitesville (0-5) was led by Lilly Ordiway, who scored six aces, five digs and three kills. The team will return to the court on Saturday with a 1 p.m. visit to Houghton Academy.

Up next for Fillmore is a trip back home to The Rock, as they welcome Genesee Valley/Belfast to town on Monday at 7:30 p.m.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Wellsville 95, Wayland-Cohocton 70

WAYLAND — After starting their four-peat title defense with a tie against Letchworth, the Sea Lions have continued to strive for greatness in the water. On Thursday, they would do it once again with their third straight victory during their visit to Wayland-Cohocton, as they recorded six total victories to come away with a 95-70 win over the Lady Eagles.

“It was a good meet on the road with Way-Co. Some of the girls got Sectional cuts in different events opening their options up,” said Sea Lions coach Steve Hand. “The girls have to be flexible on what the needs of the team are, and where they can swim the fastest and score points. It changes from meet to meet with the hopes of finding that spot come the Championship meets at the end of the season. This was a good meet to find some things out.”

Morgan Mattison led all swimmers for the Sea Lions (3-0-1) with a pair of victories — one in each half of the meet, scoring her first in the 200 freestyle and her last in the 100 backstroke. Megan Vanetten, Kaylee Oswald and Reegan Perkins all chipped in with an individual victory each, with Vanetten medaling in the 200 individual medley, Oswald becoming victorious in the 100 butterfly and Perkins scoring her triumph in the 100 breaststroke.

The Sea Lions also helped set up shop immediately at the beginning of the meet with their lone victory in the relay races, winning the 200 medley.

Wayland-Cohocton scored five total victories of their own to keep pace with the Sea Lions. Leading the way was Skylar Richardson, who scored her individual wins in the 50 freestyle and 500 freestyle. Natalie Williamson chipped in with her victory in the 100 freestyle. The Lady Eagles also scored two relay wins along the way, medaling in the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle.

Wellsville is now off until next Thursday night back on the road, visiting the Hornell Lady Red Raiders in a 5 p.m. meet.
