Thursday Roundup: Wellsville dominates home tri-meet, C-R boys, Fillmore girls place second overall; Cowburn outduels Bloomfield in tight 1-0 battle to the wire at Tullar for Lady Lions

WELLSVILLE — There wasn’t a single cloud in the sky to be had. The sun was gleaming ever so brightly, and the stars were on the track and in the field from within the confines of the Lion’s Den on Thursday, when the host Lions prepared for battle against both Cuba-Rushford and Fillmore to help close out another week of action.

With both Lions track squads riding high on a magnificent assembly of their campaign, it would remain unchanged once more, with Xavier Scott and JJ Howard guiding the boys team towards remaining undefeated with two more team wins, while the Lady Lions saw nine different performers all garner an individual win, as Wellsville swept their entire home meet in style.

Behind 10 total first place finishes, Scott and Howard were right at the front of the pack for the Lions, who have now won 15 straight, as each performer highlighted with a pair of wins to their resume during their 113-25 win over Fillmore and 81-57 win over Cuba-Rushford. Scott delivered victory from the track with his winning times in the 100 dash and 110 hurdles, while Howard took his talents to the field to cash in on a personal best, winning height in the high jump, and from the sand pit in the triple jump event.

In addition to a winning 3200 relay event, Jack Davis claimed an outright first place finish in the 400 hurdles to help Scott in sweeping both hurdling events before tying his teammate, Xander Outman, with the largest height in the pole vault event. Rounding off the individual wins for the Lions were Collin Perkins (800 run) and Kamron Dodge (3200 run).

As for the Lady Lions, they would dominate the field of competition with 12 first place finishes themselves — nine victories from nine different performers, along with a sweep of all three relay events, to power up 106-33 and 117-17 victories over the Lady Eagles and Lady Rebels, respectively.

Garnering the individual wins for the Lady Lions were Caelyn Stevens (100 dash), Morgan Mattison (1500 run), Kaylie Fuller (3000 run), Talia O’Connor (400 hurdles), Kaylee Oswald (discus), Brooklyn Dahlgren (high jump), Lauren Viglietta (long jump), Kylie Phelps (triple jump) and Jaden Dunbar (pole vault).

Back up in the boys field of competition, Cuba-Rushford would perform a split in the meet, garnering an 80-35 win over Fillmore behind six first place finishes — two of them courtesy of Tristan Clayson, who swept both throwing events from the field, in the shot put and discus. Anderson Siegel chipped in with a 200 dash victory, as he defeated Wellsville’s JJ Howard by 0.2 seconds to claim gold.

To round off for the Rebels, Ethan Coleman triumphed in the long jump to add his win alongside team wins in the 400 and 1600 relay events.

On the flip side for the Lady Rebels, they finished third after Fillmore claimed a 60-31 edge, scoring just two first place finishes from Cloey Larabee in the 400 dash and Alleyah Gross in the shot put.

The Fillmore boys placed third overall with just two first place finishes from Henry Sardina in the 400 run and Noah Strickland in the 1600 run, while the Lady Eagles claimed second with their win over the Lady Rebels. Fillmore would post three first place finishes, two from Rachel Hatch, as she sped her way towards the finish line in the 200 dash and 100 hurdles, while Ava Sylvester crossed the finish line first in the 800 run.

The next event that will take place in the Lion’s Den is the annual Pentathlon and Steeplechase meet, which will begin Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.

GV/Belfast rolls in tri-meet with Fri/Scio, Houghton at B-R

BOLIVAR — There was simply no denying Genesee Valley/Belfast victory on Thursday at Bolivar-Richburg, as the boys team scored a first place finish in all but one event to dominate the field of play, while the ladies squad scored seven first place finishes of their own to claim their victory over the host Lady Wolverines to help conclude a magnificent performance over the road.

The boys picked up a 100-9 victory over host Bolivar-Richburg behind 13 first place finishes, including a sweep of all three relay events, with three different performers all posting two individual wins each. Leading the way was Thayne Cobb, who raced to glory in the 100 dash and later from the field, in the triple jump. Following was a sweep of both distance events from Noah Miller, as he triumphed in the 1600 and 3200 runs, while Callahan Tallman chipped in with his two wins in the high and long jumps.

Adding more help along the way with a win each for Genesee Valley/Belfast were Wyatt Weaver (200 dash), Brayden Cooper (400 dash), Sal Gambino (800 run) and Bryce Davis (shot put). As for the ladies team, they used seven top finishes to aid their 66-54 edging of the Lady Wolverines, with Bayleigh Tallman and Sophie Zillgitt’s three individual victories captaining the efforts.

Following a four-win performance at the beginning of the week, Tallman came through with three more divine performances stemming off wins in the 200 dash, 400 dash and long jump, while Zillgitt garnered her victories in the 800 run, 100 hurdles and high jump events. Adding more help was Allyson Hazelton, who scored a 400 hurdles win.

Friendship/Scio scored three first place finishes between their two teams in action, as the boys scored a 70-3 win over Houghton Academy, while the ladies posted a 53-11 win over the Lady Panthers in return. For the boys, Jerimiah Brown collected their lone victory from the throwing pits, as he garnered the winning distance in the discus. As for the girls team, Cassidy Scholla and Kennedy Hunt led the way with wins of their own in the 100 dash and shot put, respectively, to pair alongside their winning 400 relay event.

Bolivar-Richburg posted two wins against Houghton Academy to help close out the quad-meet with 50-6 and 79-8 decisions for the boys and girls squad each. The Wolverines saw five first place finishes come to fruition across the meet — all from the girls, with Raegan Giardini (1500 run), Brena Walp (discus) and Carmen Crowley (triple jump) capturing gold to go with a pair of relay wins in the 1600 and 3200.

BASEBALL

Wellsville 13, Cuba-Rushford 0 (F-5)

CUBA — The road ahead of the Wellsville Lions does not get easier by any means.

Despite that, they have constructed some of their best baseball to date, matching their win total from a year ago in their first 11 games on the ledger. With a monumental and decadent challenge waiting in the wings to close out the week back home, the aim was to build even more towards that.

On the trail of Gavin Haggerty’s brilliant three-inning start on the mound, as well as some fiery sticks at the plate, the Lions would not be denied a massive momentum boost to carry into Friday night’s colossal matchup with Class B1’s defending champion Palmyra-Macedon, as they started out and ended their road trip to Cuba-Rushford on fire to lay claim on a 13-0 five-inning blank of the host Rebels, Thursday night to claim their 11th win.

“The pitching and defense has been stellar. We got another solid performance from a couple of different guys that have not really thrown a whole lot so far this year. Gavin really stepped in and threw really well, same with Derek (Coleman) and Brennen (Geffers), they both came in later on and did their jobs,” said Lions coach Tom Delahunt. “We played great defense behind them and we got a shutout out of it again. It’s nice to look back on a defensive performance like this, to pair with some hot bats again. It’s not just one guy with this team. Every night, we have multiple kids that are doing good things, and we need that.”

Behind the guidance of Haggerty on the mound, the Lions (11-1) assembled another mastodonic night at the plate by posting 13 runs off 15 total hits. Within those hits, four different batters all posted at least a pair of hits to pave the path forward. Among them was a perfect 4-for-4 outing from Alex Green that included a double, three RBI and two runs scored. Matt Ritter and Trenton Green each chipped in with three hits, combining for five RBI and five runs scored.

In addition, Karson Grover finished with a 2-for-2 outing with an RBI and two runs scored, while Ty Vogel drove for a triple. With all the bats clicking on the same wavelength, the Lions were able to start right away against Cuba-Rushford (4-3) with a five-run opening at-bat, never looking back on it along the way.

Haggerty would then proceed to finish off his triumphant start on the hill with seven strikeouts and a pair of walks.

For the Rebels, they were held to just three hits by the Wellsville pitching staff, with Adam Roe (double), Finn Ricketts and Landen Schappacher all scoring one. On the mound, Roe struck out one in his lone inning of relief. Next up for the hosts in gray and blue is a trip to Bolivar-Richburg for tournament action, as they face Otto-Eldred in a 5 p.m. first pitch tonight.

Wellsville will now return home this evening to set the table for a Friday night date with Class B superpower Palmyra-Macedon, with first pitch slated for a 5 p.m. start in the Den.

Fillmore 17, Andover/Whitesville 2 (F-5)

ANDOVER — Eighth grader Wade DeRock was endowed with the ball to make his first career Varsity start on the rubber for the Eagles of Fillmore on Thursday.

In their latest road trip to Andover, DeRock would make the most out of every shred of time he spent across his first three innings of play, as he struck out four batters and walked three to pick up the victory — a 17-2 count after five innings over host Andover/Whitesville to get Fillmore back on track.

The Eagles (5-3) scored at least three runs in each of the first four innings of play to help set a massive tone against Andover/Whitesville right out of the starting gate, beginning with a 3-0 lead in their opening at-bats before following it up with six more in the top of the second to push their advantage out in an insurmountable rate to claim the victory that awaited at the end of the game.

The 17 runs were collected off 11 hits at the plate, with Jack Boon’s three-hit evening helping lead the way. Nolan Krzeminski had two hits of his own to chip in, driving in a pair and scoring five times. Damon Potter belted a couple of doubles, while DeRock drove in three runs to further Fillmore’s offensive cause.

Andover/Whitesville (1-6) was led by Colton Calladine and Vinny Joyce, each recording a hit at the plate. On the mound, Brody Vance struck out two and walked two in his inning of relief. The team will look to turn things around this weekend at the Scio Midseason Tournament beginning Saturday morning with a 10 a.m. opening round first pitch against Alfred-Almond.

Fillmore will hit the road once again on Monday with a 5 p.m. visit to Hinsdale.

SOFTBALL

Wellsville 1, Bloomfield 0

WELLSVILLE — In some cases, one run is really all you need. At the beginning of what can be signified as perhaps one of their most difficult back-to-back sets of the season, the Lady Lions of Wellsville had to prepare for anything and everything, ranging from an endless supply of bats, to even a game-long war from within the circle.

On Thursday against the Bloomfield Lady Bombers, it was a harmonious combination of both elements, as the two squads converged to record 13 total hits. But through it all, that one single run would ultimately make a world of difference when the final pitch was thrown. Luckily for the Lady Lions, that number was within their subdivision of the scoreboard. And it was Averee Palmatier who was responsible for that.

With Bloomfield limiting them at the plate, the Lady Lions would have to take their game to a completely different level — small ball.

Under the conduction of some key bunts to put some baserunners on, Palmatier would then take the stage and step into the batter’s box with two runners on, including the icebreaking run at third. On the biggest of swings, she would unload a single into right field that garnered enough distance to score what would be the game’s lone run in the bottom of the fifth to give Wellsville a 1-0 victory to survive the defensive battle brought on by the Lady Bombers.

“The girls have been productive with the bats and scoring the runs that come with it, but it was even better to see them get the win in a different matter like this. It’s nice to have one of those close games that you have to work your way out on top in. It was a great pitcher’s battle, both of them really took command and made their respective teams scatter the hits,” Lady Lions co-coach Shelley Chaffee said. “Makenzie (Cowburn) had some nice control and she didn’t get rattled one bit. The hits were limited and it’s never comfortable in games like this, but I was really glad and thankful to push that run across for the win.”

In the midst of Wellsville’s (8-1) game-winning sequence in the fifth inning, it was a pitcher’s duel from beginning to end that Bloomfield’s Ashlyn Wright and Lady Lions ace Makenzie Cowburn delivered back-and-forth haymakers in, as the two combined to hand out a grand total of 22 chairs, allowing just one to reach base on a walk.

Cowburn was credited with that victory after Palmatier drove home the game’s lone run in the fifth, as she posted a 12-strikeout blank of the Lady Bombers to aid in scoring their eighth straight win.

As for the bats, the Lady Lions posted the one run off six total hits. Both Cowburn and Natalie Adams would each have one during the team’s key fifth inning, both reaching on bunts. Despite the hosts in orange taking the first and only lead of the night, Bloomfield remained right on the doorstep at the end, garnering one final opportunity to strike in the seventh inning.

Off a pair of singles, followed by a key bunt themselves, the Lady Bombers dragged a pair of runners over into scoring position with two outs on the board in hopes of responding to Wellsville’s go-ahead marker. But like she remained all game, Cowburn kept her command under focus and delivered a massive game-ending strikeout, leaving Bloomfield hanging to allow the Lady Lions to escape with a gritty and difficult victory.

The road ahead doesn’t get any easier for Wellsville, as they make their immediate return to Tullar Field tonight for a 6 p.m. visit from Section VI superpower, Iroquois — a rematch of last season’s Class B Far West Regional at Webster Schroeder. The Lady Lions won that game, 15-5, to punch their tickets to the State Final Four.

Fillmore 12, Andover/Whitesville 5

ANDOVER — The Lady Eagles of Fillmore fed off a brilliant start on the attack against host Andover/Whitesville, Thursday night under the lights in Andover. With the offense using some key baserunning along the way, the visitors in black and green were able to post runs in each of the first four innings of play to set the tone against host Andover/Whitesville, as they ignited a 12-5 bounce back win.

The baserunning would come into play early on for Fillmore (5-6), as they witnessed each of their first three hitters all reach base. After a series of errors in the field by the Andover/Whitesville defense, the Lady Eagles would cash in on the early prime opportunity with a 3-0 lead after the opening frame.

The lead would grow to as large as six at one point going into the bottom half of the third inning, when Andover/Whitesville (1-5) erased the shutout with their first two runs stemming off back-to-back RBIs from Reece Winters and Makaila Brewster at the heart of their batting order. But the Lady Eagles answered back to regain their six-run lead on the hosts, using a passed ball, as well as a fielder’s choice off the bat of Mylee Miller, to aid their two-run frame to go back up by an 8-2 count.

Later on, the advantage would be trimmed straight down the middle with a run in each of the next two innings for Andover/Whitesville, with a Winters triple leading the pack in the bottom of the fifth inning. But just as the hosts started to inch closer to Fillmore, the Lady Eagles would assemble an even stronger response by posting their final four runs in the top of the seventh to pull away and out of reach of Andover/Whitesville once and for all.

The Lady Eagles scored 12 runs off 11 hits at the plate, with Preslee Miller’s pair of triples in her three-hit evening at the plate leading the way. Mattie McCumiskey had four hits including a double, driving in three runs and scoring twice herself. On the mound, Mylee Miller scored the victory with five strikeouts and two walks.

Andover/Whitesville was charged by Brynna Gaylord and two of her hits at the plate. In the circle, Makaila Brewster provided a sublime performance across all seven innings, fanning seven and walking just one Fillmore batter. As for their next game, Andover/Whitesville will get set for opening round battle at Scio’s Midseason Tournament this weekend, facing Arkport-Canaseraga in a 10 a.m. first pitch Saturday morning.

Fillmore will head back home and host the Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford in their second meeting in three games to close out their season series, at 5 p.m. tonight.

Wellsville 238, Hinsdale 269

WELLSVILLE — Following one of their most competitive battles on the golf course this season with Fillmore this past Tuesday, the Lions of Wellsville navigated their way back into the win column behind a strong co-medalist round from Noah Brogan to get back to the .500 mark on the campaign with a registering of a 238-269 victory over visiting Hinsdale at the Wellsville Country Club.

Brogan would go on to share medalist honors with Hinsdale’s Caden Miller at the end of the day, as both golfers each recorded a round of 57 to fill the top spots on their respective scorecards. Wellsville returns to the Wellsville Country Club the following day, on Tuesday, hosting Cuba-Rushford at 4 p.m.

Fillmore 207, Bolivar-Richburg 260

BOLIVAR — After trading in his baseball glove for some golf clubs to help close out an illustrious career this Spring in Fillmore, Zach Sisson charted a course to the top of the scorecard for the Eagles during Thursday’s visit to the Bolivar Golf Club, where he scored medalist honors to set up a 207-260 win over host Bolivar-Richburg to aid the team’s fourth straight win.

Sisson assembled his best round of golf this season to lead the Eagles (4-0) out front, as he scored the match-low round of 47 to help set up shop. Behind him was Anderson Wiltsey, who recorded a round of 50. Sam Cool chipped in with his round of 53, while Layton Sanasith had a 57 to pitch in along the way.

Bolivar-Richburg (0-4) was paced by a team-low round of 53 fired by David Abdo. James Margeson carded a round of 67. Cayden Gaines was not far behind him with his round of 68, while Zach Mitchell rounded off with a 72. The Wolverines will make their return to the links on Tuesday with a trip to Franklinville for a 4 p.m. tee time with host Hinsdale at Ischua Valley.

The Eagles are now off until Monday night back home to Allegheny Hills in Rushford, when they host Arkport-Canaseraga in a 4 p.m. contest of their own.

GV/Belfast stays unbeaten at 6-0 behind sweep of Ark-Can, win at C-R.

WELLSVILLE/RUSHFORD — The rain halted all but one single event on Wednesday, but over the course of time, the bad weather made its way out of the picture and arriving behind it the following day, was as blue of a sky as you could imagine.

No matter the weather outdoors, the Genesee Valley/Belfast golf squad fought it all in one foul swoop across a 24-hour span to remain undefeated on the season, beginning with a strong 205-226 victory over visiting Arkport-Canaseraga at the Wellsville Country Club, completing their season sweep of the Wolves in the rain.

Will Guilford assembled the team’s leading round of the evening, as he posted the leading round of 49 to cement his spot at the top of the Genesee Valley/Belfast scorecard. Right behind him was Chris Weaver, who was a stroke removed from the lead, as he posted a 50. Grant Preston and Sean Mahon each pitched in a 53.

Arkport-Canaseraga was led by the medalist round of 39 shot by Sebastian Carroll.

The next day, Guilford would go on to shoot his second straight team-leading round for Genesee Valley/Belfast, this time garnering medalist honors himself at Allegheny Hills in Rushford, as he recorded a match-low round of 48 to pace the team’s 210-244 win over the host Rebels of Cuba-Rushford.

Grant Preston posted a 53 to further Genesee Valley/Belfast’s (6-0) balanced cause behind him. Chris Weaver tallied a 54, while Sean Mahon had a 55 to chip in.

Cuba-Rushford (2-2) was led by Kaden Bell and his team-low round of 52. Sebastian Saulter scored a 57, while Ethan Fries and Coen Kellogg rounded off the scoring with rounds of 67 and 68, respectively. The Rebels will now get set for a 4 p.m. road trip on Tuesday to the Wellsville Country Club to take on the host Lions.

The day before, Genesee Valley/Belfast will make their way back to the Wellsville Country Club themselves, as they host a 4 p.m. Monday tee time with Jasper-Troupsburg.

WELLSVILLE — The Fillmore Eagles have been untouchable all season long leading up to Thursday night’s road trip to Wellsville. It was no different again in their seventh match of the campaign, as they used another dynamic and high-powered sweep of all three singles matches against the Lions to their fullest of advantages to jumpstart the first of a back-to-back set on the road with a 4-1 win.
