Tuesday Sectionals: No. 5 And/Whi softball uses 7-run 5th inning, great pitching by Brewster to score D2 Quarters win; No. 2 Lyndonville smacks 4 homers in 13-6 win over No. 7 GV/Belfast

LIMA — Between No. 5 Andover/Whitesville and No. 4 Lima Christian, 20 runs off 20 hits were garnered to propel the offensive attacks on Tuesday in their Class D2 Quarterfinal battle.

With a 4-4 tie waiting to be broken across the first four innings of play, the action down the stretch would begin to tighten up. At the same time, the offenses would then get hotter. For Andover/Whitesville, it was just what the doctor ordered.

In the top of the fifth, the No. 5 seeds came alive in the biggest of ways, scoring four big hits while using some key baserunning to help break open the game with a seven-run outburst against the Lady Saints. Although Lima Christian provided a response to cut their deficit back down to as small as four, Andover/Whitesville would hang on and clinch a spot in Thursday’s Class D2 Semifinal round with a 13-7 road win.

After the Lady Saints originally took a 1-0 lead through the opening frame, Andover/Whitesville (5-13) responded with some big baserunning in the field with a pair of runs from both Aislinn Hamilton and Gabby Terhune, who led off the frame with back-to-back singles. The visitors would add onto their lead in the fourth with two more runs off an RBI single from Emily Schweigart and a sacrifice fly by Gabbi Hall to the outfield, extending the advantage to three.

That deficit was quickly made up by the Lady Saints with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at four on each side. But only for a brief moment, as Andover/Whitesville’s offense broke the game wide open with a seven-run frame which saw a complete, full rotation of their batting order, with a two-run double airlifted by Hall leading the bats.

From that point on, Andover/Whitesville allowed Lima Christian to score just three more runs in the next two innings to keep their lead intact, further extending upon it in the top of the seventh with their last two runs to seal their trip to the Semifinal round.

In all, 13 runs off 12 hits were collected by the Andover/Whitesville attack, with Aislinn Hamilton and Gabbi Hall each leading the way with three hits. Schweigart and Olivia Waters each had two hits to chip in, with Waters garnering a triple and double. On the mound, the win belonged to Makaila Brewster through a fantastic complete game effort, striking out six Lady Saints batters.

Up next for Andover/Whitesville is a date with top-seeded and back-to-back Class D2 champion Friendship/Scio on Thursday, as the two foes square off in Scio at 5 p.m. for a chance to advance into this weekend’s Finals at Fillmore.

Class D1 Quarterfinals

No. 2 Lyndonville 14, No. 7 Genesee Valley/Belfast 6

OAKFIELD — The No. 2 Lyndonville Lady Tigers were on the ball all game long. Although No. 7 Genesee Valley/Belfast was able to trim down an early deficit to as little as a run during the fourth inning, the response following after would be greater than them all, as they went on to score nine straight runs to pull away from their grasp and towards a 13-6 win at Oakfield-Alabama on Tuesday in Class D1 Quarterfinal action.

“They smacked the ball, and they kept pounding away up and down their lineup. We were within reach going into the fourth, but we couldn’t find a way to keep the runs coming in,” said GV/Belfast coach Mark Sullivan. “They adjusted to Hannah (Southwick-Powers) and started cranking the ball. Good teams will do that, and they will find a way to capitalize off your mistakes as well. They did everything right. Lyndonville is a number two seed for a reason.”

Lyndonville’s offense provided a dominant display of power at the plate against Genesee Valley/Belfast from start to finish, accounting for 13 runs off 17 total hits, four of them including home runs — three of them from Addison Dillenbeck, and one from Haley Shaffer. The Lady Tigers were able to account for an early 4-0 lead through the first three innings before the visitors in black and gray were able to find their way back in the top of the fourth.

From within the frame, Genesee Valley/Belfast saw Ashley Burrows help get them on the board with a big two-run double to the outfield before Raygen Haggstrom followed up with an RBI single to bring in Burrows a short time later, helping complete a three-run frame to close the gap behind Lyndonville to just a single run.

But in the bottom half, the No. 2 seeds provided an outing of all outings, scratching across five runs to begin a strand of nine unanswered against Genesee Valley/Belfast to pull away and out of reach for good, evading a late bases-loaded situation in the top of the seventh along the way, to clinch a spot in Thursday’s Semifinal round.

For Genesee Valley/Belfast, they scored six runs off nine hits, with Burrows leading the bats with two hits. On the mound, Southwick-Powers struck out four across her start through four innings.

The season has now reached its end for Genesee Valley/Belfast, as they put a wrap on their campaign with a record of 9-11 overall. The team will graduate four seniors in Burrows, Haggstrom, Anna Drozdowski and Brianna Morton.

“It was a fun year that we had,” Sullivan said. “I thought we were competitive all season long. Our division is tough, there’s no two ways about it. Give the girls credit, being down by this much going into the seventh, they never quit. They kept their heads in it and gave us another shot to win. Hopefully this experience will benefit the younger girls in the future ahead.”
