Tuesday Roundup: B-R grapplers score 42-18 wins over C-S, Fillmore/Keshequa to send Seniors out on high note; And/Whi boys net 5th win in last 7 games with close 48-40 edging of GV/Belfast

BOLIVAR — Tuesday night marked the last time the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg wrestled on the black and red mat in front of their home crowd. For five of their seniors, it was their last time ever.

The hunt for Sectional glory was right around the corner, and for their final three matches of the season following their dual meet with both Campbell-Savona and Fillmore/Keshequa, they would then have to become road warriors. But before the Wolverines chart their course away from home, they needed to take care of the one item at the top of their to-do list.

Win for their seniors.

With a series of forfeits and two wins in competition paving the way in their first match against the Panthers, and then five more wins in the midst of battle against Fillmore/Keshequa to close out the night, Bolivar-Richburg was able to take care of business in style by garnering 42-18 wins in each match to close out their home stand on the most positive of notes.

To start the night, the Wolverines were granted five forfeit wins in the first eight matches, including victories in each of the first four matches, beginning with Tavyn MacDonell at 170 pounds, and continuing with Zach Mitchell (190 pounds), Caden Allen (215 pounds) and Aiden Smith (285 pounds) with wins of their own.

After Presley McDowell added a forfeit win at 108 pounds, the action would begin with the team’s first win at 131 pounds, as Gary McDowell cashed in with a pinfall victory just 23 seconds into the second period over Campbell-Savona’s Mason Reed. The Panthers would grab their first win immediately following at 138 pounds with a pinfall win of their own, but not before Trey Buchholz was able to cash in on the quickest pinfall victory of the match, rolling up Noah Brooks in 55 seconds to claim triumph at 145 pounds.

In the second match, they would start with three straight victories to set up shop, including back-to-back wins on the mat from both Zach Mitchell and Caden Allen, with Mitchell claiming a dominant lead on the board before utilizing the mat to pin Fillmore/Keshequa’s Gage Hartman just 17 seconds into the final period of the 190 pound bout, while Allen took care of business with a 1:31 pin over Caleb Green at 215 pounds.

With a Connor McCumiskey forfeit win at 101 pounds allowing Fillmore/Keshequa to reach the board, Bolivar-Richburg ensured their lead would remain intact with Presley McDowell’s assistance at 108 pounds, scoring a quick pin in just over 90 seconds over Jules Cotton. Fillmore/Keshequa would garner back-to-back wins — their lone victories in action at 124 and 131 pounds, as Alivia Cartwright registered a forfeit win while Ryan Vedder claimed victory nearly a minute into the second period of his bout against Cayden Gaines with a pin.

The Wolverines were able to finish the night strong with a back-to-back response of their own entering the middleweight classes, as Gary McDowell and Trey Buchholz each collected their second win of the dual meet, both by pinfall, as McDowell pinned Graham Howe in 58 seconds in the 138 pound bout, while Buchholz rolled up Kalen Beardsley with nearly 30 seconds remaining in the opening period in his bout at 145 pounds.

Both teams will hit the road Thursday night to resume action in a 6 p.m. start, with Bolivar-Richburg heading for Letchworth, while Fillmore/Keshequa looks to bounce back at Avoca-Prattsburgh/Hammondsport.

Team Scores: Campbell-Savona 18, Bolivar-Richburg 42.

Canisteo-Greenwood 54, Wellsville 15

CANISTEO — The Lions of Wellsville were able to start the night off on a high note behind Gabe Black’s match-opening victory, Tuesday night in the Canisteo Valley. But soon after, the Chargers of Canisteo-Greenwood bolted and stole the spotlight, scoring 10 wins across the remainder of the match to bring the hammer down on what was a massive 54-15 win.

At 190 pounds, Black was the first of three Lions to score victories — two of which in action, as he delivered a pin within the first minute of the second period over Luke Zeh to score the opening six points to break the ice. The early momentum that Wellsville had built would reach a halt across the next three matches and further beyond, as the Chargers took complete control with strong wins from Dominic Dennis at 215 pounds (pinfall, 1:47), Skyler Miles at 285 pounds (pinfall, :51) and a 6-1 decision from Garrett Hall at 101 pounds.

The Lions would garner a forfeit win from Paul Giovaniello at 108 pounds before Canisteo-Greenwood assumed total control once again, scoring wins in each of the next seven matches to take care of business, as Connor McCaffery (116 pounds), Dylan Depew-Cappadonia (124 pounds), Triston Williamson (131 pounds), Mathias Sharp (138 pounds), Austin Hall (145 pounds), Colton Havens (152 pounds) and Beau Zeh (160 pounds) all scored wins.

Xander Outman was the last Wellsville grappler to score a victory in action, as he fought Canisteo-Greenwood’s Carson Turner tough across all three periods, gathering just enough points to claim a 3-1 decision.

The Lions are back home for action Thursday night with a 6 p.m. visit from Alfred-Almond.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Andover/Whitesville 48, Genesee Valley/Belfast 40

BELFAST — Ever since their appearance at St. Bonaventure a little over a month ago, Andover/Whitesville has begun to find their rhythm. Winners of four of their last five, including an exceptional performance at the Dan Barkley Showcase this past weekend against Hammondsport, they would now look to continue shifting their momentum with a chance to earn some big Sectional points on Tuesday.

With Genesee Valley/Belfast up next on the schedule for the first time since their Lion’s Club Tournament at the beginning of the season, Andover/Whitesville now emerged with something to prove. Although the battle in Belfast came down to the wire, it was the beginning stages that set the tone.

Right in the opening frame, the visitors in black struck all chords, as they used a scoreless run to grab a lead that was pressurized at times, but never relinquished, to score their third straight win — their fifth in the last seven games, by a 48-40 count over Genesee Valley/Belfast.

“We knew coming into the season, we would need a win against a bigger C school to prove ourselves that we definitely belong,” said Andover/Whitesville coach Jimmy Joyce. “We thought maybe we had it the first time we played GV/Belfast but Lintz (Bliven) made some great halftime adjustments and they put it on us to win the Lion’s Club Tournament. I think we learned a lot since then, and we were able to hold on today. Defense was key, I was really proud of our overall effort these last three games because of that.”

The start was exactly what Andover/Whitesville (7-4) wanted to build right away against Genesee Valley/Belfast to make their mark early, as they held the hosts to a complete standstill on defense, while the offense in transition would syphon the momentum from the big plays on the opposite end of the floor and create a massive 12-0 run to claim the advantage after the first quarter.

Genesee Valley/Belfast (5-6) would bounce back and chip away little by little as time progressed in the game, looking to continue closing the gap even further in the last eight minutes of play where the pressure began to boil. Although the hosts rode their coattails all the way to the finish, Andover/Whitesville was able to do just enough to finish the job for the road win.

The main reasons why: Brody Vance and Colton Calladine — Andover/Whitesville’s dynamic duo, as the two sharpshooters paid massive dividends for the offense once more with 29 of the team’s 48 points, with Vance leading the charge with his game-high 19, and Calladine following with 10. Ethan Warriner chipped in with seven.

“Brody had another stellar game offensively along with Colt. Those two were able to handle the pressure well,” Joyce said. “Vinny (Joyce) was huge for us on the boards today as well. They are so strong, especially with a guy like Jacob Borden underneath controlling the board himself. A lot of great contributions were made, and it gave us another nice win for sure.”

For Genesee Valley/Belfast, Jacob Borden led all scorers with his team-high 19 points underneath. Ian McKenzie followed with 10 points, while Lannden Tilton had five. The team will hit the road Friday night for a 7 p.m. visit to Honeoye.

Andover/Whitesville will look to continue their winning ways back on the road Thursday night with a 7:30 p.m. visit to Gary Wight Court at Cuba-Rushford to face the host Rebels.

Houghton Academy 53, Keshequa 45

HOUGHTON — A hot start was extinguished in the second half by Keshequa, as they aimed to apply some pressure late in the game on Tuesday. But when it was all said and done, the host Panthers of Houghton Academy prowled and made every bit of the opportunity count in the late stages to hang on and ward off their opposition’s final push in what was a 53-45 victory.

All four of Houghton Academy’s (4-3) scorers provided a helping hand in getting their game off on the right foot, scoring a humongous 17-7 run on Keshequa to get the party started. From the second quarter on however, it began to get tighter and tighter, with a late rally from the visitors in orange allowing them to apply pressure down the stretch.

With no quarter being determined by more than four points, Keshequa saved their best spurt of offense for last by docking a 16-point frame to ignite their late rally against the Panthers. But in the end, their early run in the opening frame allowed the hosts in white and blue to maintain their position in the driver’s seat, cruising towards victory.

Houghton Academy was led by Jack Prentice, James Adenuga and Jack Qi, all of which recorded 14 game-high points. Josh Davidson rounded off the scoring with the team’s final 11 points.

Up next, the Panthers will now head down the road to the north, where they will host the Fillmore Eagles in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off on Thursday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Andover/Whitesville 43, Alfred-Almond 18

WHITESVILLE — Andover/Whitesville came out swinging for the fences on Tuesday, as they saw five different scorers all have a hand in starting the opening eight minutes with a massive run of visiting Alfred-Almond to set the tone with, racing past the Lady Eagles with a 43-18 home win in Whitesville to get back into the win column.

Just the first quarter was what Andover/Whitesville (3-7) ordered, as they assembled an offensive stand that consisted of 18 straight points while holding Alfred-Almond scoreless to set the tone. Among the assistants were Graci Lewis-Ellison and Olivia Waters, as the two scorers converged to record 11 of those points in the frame to get the ball rolling straight to the finish line.

Lewis-Ellison would wind up leading all scorers on the floor for the hosts in white, posting a game-high 13 points. Grace Fry contributed seven points, while Waters had six to add.

Andover/Whitesville is back in action tonight with a trip to Belmont, visiting host Genesee Valley/Belfast at 7:30 p.m.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Wellsville 3, Bolivar-Richburg 1

RICHBURG — The Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg were pushed to the brink, but they wouldn’t go down without a fight to survive a close battle with visiting Wellsville on Tuesday, as they collected a big third-set victory to stay alive. But the momentum they would create was diminished by the Lions in what was the last set of action, as they were able to exit town with a four-set, 25-20, 25-18, 19-25, 25-14 victory.

The Lions (7-3) were led on the attack by Brody Heaney, posting a game-high 10 kills to pair with four blocks and three aces. Wheeler Dahlgren was excellent from the back line to lead the service, scoring eight aces, while Terrence Benz chipped in with four more kills, three aces and a block at the front of the net.

Statistics for the Wolverines (0-11) were not made available to report upon publication.

Both teams are back in action Friday night in a pair of 6 p.m. first serves, with Wellsville heading back home to host Cuba-Rushford, while Bolivar-Richburg travels to Fillmore.

Arkport-Canaseraga 3, Friendship/Scio 2

SCIO — The action intensified after every single point, and soon after, each set was exchanged in a back-and-forth fashion all through the night between Arkport-Canaseraga and Friendship/Scio on Tuesday. Of the five total sets the two teams would contest in, two of them were forced into extra serves.

As a result, both teams would gather the two clutch points they would need, with the hosts garnering the last two to force a fifth and final decisive set of action. In the end, it was a massive run by the visitors in black and teal that would keep Friendship/Scio’s momentum at bay and give them the room they needed to work with, as they closed out the night with victory after a race to the finish line, scoring the 25-13, 21-25, 26-24, 24-26, 15-7 win in Scio.

“Our response after the first set was excellent,” Friendship/Scio coach Kaiden Bowers. “We had opportunities to put this one away and we let them squander. But we fought hard and we showed life, when in the past we quit. If we play like we did tonight, we’ll put ourselves in the position to be competitive in every match.”

Friendship/Scio (1-8) was paced by a strong offensive night from Lawson Ector, posting seven kills to go with five blocks and three aces. Eli Wade chipped in with seven more kills of his own, coupling them with four blocks and a pair of helpers.

For the Wolves, Noah Drouin paced the attack with his 12 kills. Curtis Hartman chipped in with seven aces from the back line to go with four additional kills to round off.

On Friday, Friendship/Scio will look to keep the tires moving with a visit from undefeated Allegany-Limestone at 6 p.m.

Fillmore 3, Genesee Valley/Belfast 1

BELMONT — Despite falling into an early hole after the first set, the Eagles of Fillmore were able to shake it off brilliantly on Tuesday, as they started a new week of action on the court with wins in each of the next three sets to tilt all of the momentum in their direction against host Genesee Valley/Belfast, claiming the ultimate four-set win by a 17-25, 25-20, 25-7, 26-24 count.

The Eagles (6-5) were captained by an unreal night from Reid Cockle, who contributed a little bit of everything to lead the offense and defense on the court, scoring 17 service points, 16 assists, eight kills, five digs, two blocks and an ace. Jayce Ashton chipped in with eight more service points to go with five kills and one ace, while Nathan Tanner rounded off with 12 monster digs on defense to couple with eight service points and seven kills.

On the other side of the net, Genesee Valley/Belfast (6-7) was led by Brayden Cooper’s six kills and five blocks on the offensive. Jackson Stout pitched in with five kills and two blocks of his own, while Sean Mahon had nine helpers to hand out, three kills and three aces.

“We made too many mistakes,” said GV/Belfast coach Darren Bradt. “Fillmore does really well keeping the ball up and putting the pressure right back on you. We really need to work on coming out more aggressive. But I have to really give it up for Fillmore on how they keep coming at you and they don’t make a lot of mistakes when they have possession of the ball.”

Both teams are back on the floor Friday night in a pair of 6 p.m. first serves, as Fillmore heads back home to host Bolivar-Richburg, while Genesee Valley/Belfast hits the road for a visit to Arkport-Canaseraga.

Allegany-Limestone 3, Cuba-Rushford 0

CUBA — The Gators of Allegany-Limestone went straight to work in the Wighthouse and Cuba-Rushford on Tuesday and emerged victorious with a straight-set sweep, as they claimed victory by a 25-12, 25-7, 25-10 count.

The Rebels (3-8) were led by Brock Stadler and his four kills, four digs and an ace on both ends of the floor.

As for the visitors, AJ Riordan led the offense with eight kills. Jesse Decker provided 15 digs on defense to keep the ball off the floor.

Cuba-Rushford will look to bounce back tonight with a 6 p.m. contest against Portville right back inside the Wighthouse.
