Monday Roundup: Wellsville volleyball survives back-and-forth battle with C-R, capture 1st win of 2025 in 5-set thriller; B-R girls capture 4th straight win, C-R boys ignite at Oswayo Valley
CUBA — There is always concern for teams to develop a little bit of rust after a long layoff from action. But for both Wellsville and Cuba-Rushford volleyball teams, there was no evidence of that whatsoever. Instead, they simply picked up where they left off from last year.
Plenty of points were traded back-and-forth between each team, with the Lions and Rebels garnering an early run in the first two sets before clashing in a marathon, deadlock-breaking third set. The neck-and-neck dead heat journeyed onward where two more additional sets were needed to determine the outcome of their first of two meetings this season, Monday night.
Through it all, it was the Lions that managed to wiggle free at the very end, as they reached the .500 mark with a five-set victory over the Rebels, claiming the 25-20, 16-25, 27-29, 25-13, 15-12 win in thrilling fashion.
A strong offensive night came to complete fruition for Xavier Scott, who was dominant at the net with his team-leading 14 kills, pairing them alongside four blocks and an ace from the service line to pace Wellsville’s (3-3) attack. Lucius Griggs furthered the team’s cause with five kills, one ace and one dig of his own, while Terrence Benz rounded off the scoring for the Lions with four kills and a denial.
Despite the defeat, the Rebels (2-4) saw plenty of bountiful contributions themselves, with Brock Stadler and his game-high 15 kills leading the way. Stadler chipped in six digs and an ace to finish an outstanding performance. Anderson Seigel had eight kills, eight digs and two aces to contribute, while Coen Kellogg and Chase Haas combined to record 34 assists. Stanley Gilchrist had eight digs and four aces to round off the scoring for the hosts.
Cuba-Rushford returns to action next Monday night back inside the Wighthouse with a 6 p.m. visit from Arkport-Canaseraga.
As for Wellsville, they look to keep their winning ways rolling into Wednesday night back home, hosting Genesee Valley/Belfast in a 6 p.m. contest of their own.
Fillmore 3, Genesee Valley/Belfast 1
BELMONT — Although host Genesee Valley/Belfast rallied their way back from behind to cut their match deficit in half, a big rebound by the Eagles of Fillmore in what was deemed the final set of action on Monday paid even more dividends, as they hit the road for their first match of 2025 and left the Jungle in Belmont with a four-set victory by a 25-12, 25-18, 15-25, 25-13 count.
An outstanding night of service was garnered by Anderson Wiltsey for the Eagles (3-3) to help pave the way forward, as he led all scorers with a game-high 16 service points, congealing them alongside 16 helpers at the net, eight digs, six aces, two kills and a block. Following up was Skylar Freeman and his 15 additional assists, three aces, two kills and two digs. Nathan Tanner had 13 service points of his own to add with three kills, three aces and three digs.
For Genesee Valley/Belfast (0-6), Lawson Ector powered the attack with seven team-high kills to pair with one ace and one block. Noah Miller chipped in with 11 assists to help set the offense up, coupling them with eight aces and three more kills. The team returns to action on Wednesday, visiting Wellsville at 6 p.m.
Fillmore is now off for the next week and change, as they prepare for their next upcoming battle next Wednesday night, as they head back home to The Rock to welcome in Arkport-Canaseraga for a 6 p.m. contest.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Cuba-Rushford 54, Oswayo Valley 33
SHINGLEHOUSE, PA — Despite coming up empty after a difficult two-game set at Allegany-Limestone right before the New Year, the Rebels of Cuba-Rushford were poised to navigate their way back into the win column when the return to action sprung into existence on Monday.
Their travels saw them cross below the border to Shinglehouse for a date with the Oswayo Valley Green Wave, and in it, a slow start for the Rebels came, as Oswayo Valley put them on their feet early behind a strong glass game. But despite some early adversity, Cuba-Rushford overcame it later on in the second half, putting the gas pedal down to the floor to branch their lead, as they held on for victory for the first time in 2025 with a 54-33 win.
“Oswayo Valley played very hard and we struggled to execute in the first half. We were pounded on the boards,” Rebels coach Pat Wight said. “We came out in the second half and executed, and got some really nice looks. We were very sloppy with the ball and we had way too many turnovers, but we came out and did a much better job to help finish the win. It’s always nice to go on the road and get a win after a long break.”
The Rebels (6-3), despite battling the boards early alongside Oswayo Valley, found their groove early behind Zach Deck and Carter Brown to the rim, as each scored a pair of baskets sandwiched in between a long Eli Sleggs three-pointer to construct an 11-4 lead on the Green Wave. With the hosts gradually chipping away at their deficit through the second quarter, the visitors in blue and maroon looked to Finn Ricketts to deliver down low, as he posted eight of his 14 points from within the team’s 17-point frame to help branch their advantage going into the break.
The second half brought good tidings for Cuba-Rushford beginning in the third quarter, when the offense turned the tide completely behind the efforts of five different scorers, who all registered at least two points to aid in assembling a strong 15-7 run of Oswayo Valley that ultimately allowed them to shove their advantage into insurmountable territory for the remainder of battle.
Leading the scoring for the Rebels was Ricketts, who recorded 14 team-high points to pair with six boards. Adam Roe and Carter Brown each had 10 points, adding eight and seven rebounds respectively along the way, while Zach Deck had seven points to chip in.
Cuba-Rushford will look to find the win column once more back home Wednesday night with a 7:30 p.m. visit from Hinsdale.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Bolivar-Richburg 48, Campbell-Savona 38
CAMPBELL — The end of their 2024 witnessed victory before the holidays, and for their first game back in the year 2025 on Monday, it was no different again for the Bolivar-Richburg Lady Wolverines, as they took control of the action on the hardwood at Campbell-Savona with two half-commencing runs to bring the hammer down on the Lady Panthers following what was a 48-38 road win — their fourth in a row.
The Lady Wolverines (4-4) found their groove right away in the first eight minutes of play, with Emma Sisson and Carmen Crowley each paving the path down low, while a duo of triples from the hands of Jaelyn Kinnicutt and Raegan Giardini aided in constructing a 12-6 advantage over the Lady Panthers.
After both teams drew even across the second quarter, the Lady Wolverines remained in front going into the second half where they wasted absolutely no time extending upon their advantage, as they held Campbell-Savona to six more points once again in the midst of their strongest offensive outing of the night — a 15-6 run that was powered once again by Crowley down low, and by Sisson and Kinnicutt outside with another triple each.
Campbell-Savona would go on to apply some pressure down the stretch with their strongest frame of offense in the game while holding Bolivar-Richburg to a game-low nine points, but the first and third quarter runs developed by the Lady Wolverines ultimately sufficed and held steady to finish off their victory.

SCIO — An all-balanced attack right from the beginning was the recipe for success on Monday for the Arkport-Canaseraga Lady Wolves, as they battled with host Friendship/Scio early on in the opening frame before turning the jets up full blast to close out the first half behind a massive second quarter jaunt, cementing what ultimately morphed into a 63-19 road win in Scio.

With a nine-point lead in hand, the Lady Wolves crossed into double-digit territory behind a long Payton O’Dell three-pointer with less than 20 seconds left to give them a 22-10 lead going forward.
With the momentum now in their possession, the visitors in black and teal went full force in the last eight minute session before the break, taking full advantage of the opportunity on both ends of the floor, as they scurried off on a 16-2 run of Friendship/Scio (2-5) to push their advantage out even further.
Arkport-Canaseraga would ultimately go on to hold Friendship/Scio in check for the remainder of the second half to secure their victory. The Lady Wolves were led by both O’Dell and Gracen Mahany, each posting 13 points.
