Thursday Football: A-L Gators score 24 1st Quarter points to set tone against Wellsville, stroll to 58-0 victory; Pembroke’s Totten scores 4 TDs in 42-14 road win at B-R

WELLSVILLE — Looking to provide a big bounce back after a 44-8 loss to the hands of the Bolivar-Richburg Wolverines last week, the Lions of Wellsville took to the Thursday Night Lights with a visit from Allegany-Limestone in town for a visit.

After the Gators provided the game’s first score, the Lions nearly provided a swift response of their own in the shape of a 71-yard touchdown from Brennen Geffers to Trenton Green on the run. But two penalties called against the Lions negated the big play and forced them backwards even more in their own territory.

From that point on, it was a block that the Gators foresaw an opportunity to build even more on top of it. As a result, they would go on to record 24 first quarter points to set the tone against Wellsville for the remainder of the night, as they left town with a 58-0 shutout.

In a first quarter that Allegany-Limestone took complete control of from start to finish, it would begin with a score on the opening drive for the Gators in just over two minutes time, as a series of rushes led to a 17-yard score from Matt Burnett, who shed a couple of Lions tackles on his way into the end zone on the far sideline.

In turn, the defense built off the momentum and forced a three-and-out against Wellsville (1-2), with Burnett finding the end zone for his second score of the quarter in the late stages, finding a wide open lane while evading a couple of defenders along the way once more for a 29-yard score.

On the next offensive series for the visitors, a bobbled snap at the line of scrimmage received a quick reaction from quarterback Michael Frederick. With it, he scooped it up and went straight up the middle and to the house for a 70-yard touchdown to make it 24-0 after the opening quarter.

The rest of the way, the Gators continued to build more to their foundation in the first quarter with 14 more points in the next 12 minutes of play to hold a 38-0 lead at the break, never looking back in the process.

Individual statistics and a complete box score on the contest was not made available to report upon publication.

Wellsville will look to regroup and rebound back over the road next weekend, as they prepare for a visit to Red Jacket next Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.

Pembroke 42, Bolivar-Richburg 14

BOLIVAR — Fronted by the likes of one of Section V’s elite on the run, Tyson Totten, the Pembroke Dragons showcased why they are the defending New York State Champions in 8-Man football.

The Dragons senior ran wild for nearly 200 yards and scored four touchdowns — his longest ringing in at 56 yards to help finish up a 35-0 halftime lead over host Bolivar-Richburg that they never looked back on, as they floored it towards a 42-14 win on Thursday at Dunsmore-Latimer Field.

Totten helped the Dragons get right to work in the opening quarter against the Wolverines (2-1), as he came away with scores of 20 and 32 yards to put his team up early with a 14-0 lead. The momentum carried over into the next quarter, where they went on to score 21 more points off three more runs — two from Caleb Felski, who scampered away from the Wolverines defense on a 76-yard run and later on, a run from four yards out before Totten added his third of the game from long distance to finish off the first half scoring.

After Totten’s fourth touchdown of the game helped finish off the scoring for the Dragons, Bolivar-Richburg would then find a way to erase the shutout on the board with a run game of their own, led by Tavyn MacDonell, who scored from short distance to put the Wolverines on the board before the end of the third quarter.

The Wolverines would find the end zone one final time in the last 12 minutes of play with another run from the backfield, this time, by Kingston Loucks, who scored from 10 yards out. In all, Bolivar-Richburg compiled 268 yards of total offense, with MacDonell finishing as the team’s leading rusher with 19 carries for 152 yards and his score.

On defense, MacDonell also contributed a team-leading seven tackles. Loucks chipped in with four tackles, while Trey Buchholz had 3.5 tackles to add.

The Wolverines are back on their home field next Friday night, as they welcome Caledonia-Mumford/Byron-Bergen to Dunsmore-Latimer Field for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
