Allen, Sibble become Super Sectional Champions as five Wolverines punch ticket to State Tournament; Wellsville’s Davidson collects 2nd place finish to move onto States

BROCKPORT — With an opportunity to lay claim on the highest amount of glory one can accomplish in the region, the chance to take that one final, giant step forward arrived on Saturday at SUNY Brockport.

A trip to the New York State Tournament in our state capital was on the line. For six local grapplers, it was an opportunity that would not squander.

Through all of the tough competition that they had to weave their way through, only the top three placers would wind up making the cut at the end of the long afternoon. That would see five Bolivar-Richburg wrestlers — Gary McDowell, Trey Buchholz, Tavyn MacDonell, Caden Allen and Trent Sibble, along with Wellsville senior Shane Davidson, all punch their tickets to Albany in two week’s time, where they will compete for the right to become State Champions at MVP Arena.

Out of the top finishes for the Wolverines, Allen and Sibble would go the entire distance for the program, becoming Super Sectional Champions at 215 and 285 pounds, respectively. Allen picked up a strong pin-fall victory over Waterloo’s Hunter Worden at 3:54 to claim his title, while Sibble got the one single point he needed to make all the difference against North Rose-Wolcott’s Noah Wazinski to pick up a phenomenal 1-0 decision win for his prize.

McDowell placed second at 110 pounds to lead the secondary finishes for Bolivar-Richburg. Buchholz would place third at 126 pounds, while MacDonell rounded off with a second place finish of his own at 160 pounds.

Joining the five Wolverines out east at MVP Arena later this month, is Wellsville’s Shane Davidson, who nearly become a Super Sectional Champion himself, as his remarkable senior campaign will continue on for a chance to bring home some State gold at 189 pounds, placing second behind Byron-Bergen’s Malachi Smith after a 6-3 decision.

The NYSPHSAA Tournament in Albany will close out the entire wrestling season across a two-day span, beginning and ending on February 24 and 25.
