Friday Roundup: Wellsville golfers battle rain on the links, split road tri-match with Waverly, host Addison to garner 1st win; Strong start by host Addison dooms Lady Wolverines softball
PAINTED POST — Mother Nature perpetuated its havoc-wreaking existence across the entire northeast with even more rain falling down from the sky. But against all odds, the Lions of Wellsville were able to take a step out onto the links at Indian Hills Golf Course in Painted Post to face two strong and dynamic foes for action — Section V power Addison and Section IV’s Waverly.
Although Ethan Bailey was able to navigate his way to the top of the leaderboard once more for the Lions at the end of the dreary, precipitation-filled evening, Wellsville hopped back onto the bus with a match split to garner their first win of the 2024 campaign, edging their way past Waverly (212-223) while the host Knights took over with a match-low score of 163 behind an absolutely stellar round of 36, par for the course, for Ryan Thompson.
Bailey paved the way for Wellsville (1-2) with his team-low round of 48 to cement his spot at the top of the scorecard. Following behind was another superb round supplied by Jackson Shoughrue, as he finished with a 53. Noah Brogan chipped in a 57, while Fletcher Kaye had a 58.
Up next for the Lions is another tri-match over the road Monday night, as they head for Twin Hickory to take on two of Steuben County’s finest on the links — Bath-Haverling and the host Red Raiders of Hornell, in a 3:45 p.m. tee time.
SOFTBALL
Addison 16, Bolivar-Richburg 1 (F-5)
ADDISON — The Lady Knights of Addison, despite the drenched and bedraggled conditions, were able to garner the best of both worlds on each side of the softball spectrum, using an absolutely torrid start out of the gate to set the tone, while Sadie Strauss assumed complete and total command from within the circle to keep Bolivar-Richburg at a standstill to record a 16-1 home win after five complete innings.
Addison wasted no time striking while the iron was scorching hot against the Lady Wolverines (1-1), as they scored seven straight runs — four of them behind a solid display of baserunning behind the defense to open the curtains in the first inning. With a 7-0 lead in hand, their shutout bid was erased in the third when Cassidy Stives delivered one of her three hits in the game out to the outfield, arriving to second with an RBI double to get on the board.
But it would be the only run Bolivar-Richburg managed to scratch across, as the Lady Knights went back to work to push their advantage out insurmountably, scoring eight massive runs that served as their counterattack in the bottom of the third inning to pull away. Addison would total 16 runs off eight hits at the plate.
As for the Lady Wolverines, Jayna Thomas and Emma Sisson each had a hit to follow behind Stives’ 3-for-3 outing at the plate. In the circle, Rylee Whiting went the first three innings, striking out five and walking seven.
Coming up on Monday, Bolivar-Richburg will look to regroup and rebound in their home opener, as they prepare to welcome in Andover/Whitesville for a 5 p.m. visit.
