Tuesday Roundup: Lions win eighth straight game behind big game from Dunbar in road win at GV; Fillmore clinches half of D-I title with win vs. C-R

BELMONT — Logan Dunbar had another strong game for Wellsville from the field, as he led the way for a Lions offense that found their opening right after halftime, using both side of the court to their fullest advantage to come away with their eighth straight win Tuesday night at Genesee Valley, as they rolled their way toward a 61-35 victory against the Jaguars.

Both teams were right with one another through the first half of play, but it would ultimately go in Wellsville’s (8-1) favor, as they narrowly outscored Genesee Valley with a 19-16 lead heading into the break. But it was the beginning of even bigger things for the Lions, as they used their defense as their best offense, while scoring a 23-8 third quarter run that saw them pull away for good toward victory.

Dunbar bucketed five of Wellsville’s nine three-pointers on his way toward a game-high 21 points to lead the offensive attack. Liam McKinley had two more to add in himself to put toward his 13-point effort. Sam Schmidt provided eight points.

Genesee Valley (0-8) was led by Riley Gordon, who had 17 of the team’s 35 total points. Austin Murphy added in 10 points of his own, while Brock Ellsessor and Morgan Torrey rounded off the scoring with five, and three points respectively.

Wellsville heads back home, where they will search for their ninth straight win on Thursday with a 7:30 p.m. contest against the Fillmore Eagles, while Genesee Valley finishes out their regular season with one last road trip to Belfast in a 2:30 p.m. contest on Saturday.

Fillmore 48, Cuba-Rushford 45

FILLMORE — Although the Rebels of Cuba-Rushford played catch up to get back within reach of Fillmore, the Eagles were able to do just enough in the end with a big outscoring in the second quarter - one of the x-factors that kept them out front and run the clock out on their opposition, as they squeezed their way toward a 48-45 rebounding victory on Tuesday inside The Rock.

“Bryce (Ryan) really had his guys ready to play tonight. When we played them at Cuba, they struggled with our pressure and Will (Roeske) was able to take it to them down low,” Eagles coach Randy Crouch said. “Tonight, they handled the pressure much better and did a great job of getting weak side help to Will. Fortunately Isaiah (Voss) and Dylan (Valentine) had balanced games on both ends and Colby (Wolfer) made some big plays when we needed them. We have struggled closing out tight games, but I’m happy that we did a better job making decisions down the stretch to run out the clock. Now, we get focused on a big rematch with Wellsville.”

Both Cuba-Rushford and Fillmore started neck and neck through the first quarter strongly, as they both exchanged buckets until a 16-16 tie was garnered at the end. The Eagles (7-2) would go on to net a 12-6 second quarter run on Cuba-Rushford to take the six-point advantage heading into the break.

That ground was quickly made up with the Rebels (3-5) cut the deficit back down to a single possession heading into the fourth quarter. But the late comeback was halted when the Eagles defense managed to hold Cuba-Rushford still while keeping their lead in tact, running the clock out efficiently to hang onto their victory.

With the victory, Fillmore will clinch a share of the Allegany County Division I title, their first since the 2013-14 season.

The Eagles were led by Will Roeske, who netted a game-high 11 points. Isaiah Voss chipped in with eight points, while Dylan Valentine had seven to add. For the Rebels, Jacob Smith led the way with 10 team-high points. Jack Frank and Trent Chamberlain both recorded nine points.

Both teams are back on the floor Thursday night in a pair of 7:30 p.m. contests, as Fillmore hits the road to face Wellsville, while Cuba-Rushford heads back home to welcome in Bolivar-Richburg for Senior Night.
