Lady Lions triumph in game one behind blank, but see 10-game win streak snapped by Addison in Sunday twinbill

ADDISON — Sunday afternoon matinees are usually a rarity around the area. But for the Lady Lions of Wellsville, it was a chance to keep their hot streak alive over the road with back to back visits in a 24 hours span. Their first was in Addison, as they took on the Lady Knights in a series-closing doubleheader.

The Lady Lions would continue their winning ways to begin the day with Makenzie Cowburn’s gem in the circle, and the bats coming alive. But in the next, the Lady Knights capitalized on a quick start of their own and then held off their opposition at the very end, as Wellsville split their doubleheader with a 14-0 game one win, and then fell in game two by a 6-5 count, snapping their 10-game win streak.

In game one, Wellsville headlined an excellent start to the day with the offense recording 14 runs off 21 hits at the plate, while Makenzie Cowburn kept the Lady Knights on their heels in shutout fashion, twirling a two-hit, 14-strikeout gem. On offense, the team stayed hot with an 8-0 lead through the first three innings, five of those runs coming in a massive third inning that allowed them to break the game wide open.

Six different Lady Lions recorded at least a pair of hits at the plate, with Marley Adams and Maddie Spicer each recording four, including two doubles, and RBI and two runs scored. Lauren Cicirello and Marissa Ordway each chipped in with three hits, and two RBI to help the cause, while Emma Dunaway and Mallory Sibble both recorded two hits, with Sibble driving in two runs in the process.

In game two, it was a different story, as Addison picked up the quick beginning in the opening frame over the Lady Lions, scoring three runs to hold a 3-0 lead for the majority of the contest. The Lady Lions (10-1) would regroup in the back half of the contest with three big runs coming in the top of the fifth, with Makenzie Cowburn (double), Mallory Sibble (sacrifice fly) and Maddie Spicer (flyout) all providing RBIs to tie the game at three.

Addison would regroup immediately following Wellsville’s game-tying inning, as they countered with two runs in the bottom half to take the lead back again, ultimately for good despite some late pressure brought on by the Lady Lions in the top of the seventh, with Carly Young driving in a run off a one-out single to close the gap to one. But the Lady Knights held on by closing out the game with a double play.

Marley Adams and Brazen Beckwith led the bats with two hits each, while Cowburn chipped in with a triple, double and RBI. In the circle, Marissa Ordway struck out eight and walked two in her five-inning start.

The Lady Lions are back on the bus tonight, as they prepare for a 5 p.m. visit to Allegany-Limestone to take on the Lady Gators.
