Saturday Roundup: In Class B Far West rematch, Cowburn hurls first-rate gem in Lions ascension over State No. 1 Medina; Powers twirls 1-hit shutout to highlight GV/Belfast’s Senior Night win over A-A
MEDINA — It was a Saturday on the calendar that the Lions of Wellsville had ferociously circled since the very beginning. With the stars aligning ever so perfectly leading up to that very day, the opportunity to see what the defending Class B champions were truly made of, had finally come.
With a brutal defeat to the hands of Wayland-Cohocton now in the rearview mirror completely, the Lions have begun to build an overwhelming amount of steam entering the final stretch before Sectionals, unleashing their offense against Canisteo-Greenwood and Allegany-Limestone in the last two contests to pick up two bounce back wins before they made the long trip up north to visit the Medina Mustangs.
The very team that ended their season last Spring. The very team that also currently stands as New York State’s best in Class B.
Wellsville knew exactly what to expect entering the afternoon. An elite Mustangs group who has not lost a beat since the end of their Final Four run last season, rattling off 13 straight victories this year to ascend the Empire State ranks as the best of the best. But early on in their first head-to-head battle since that day in Grand Island, the Lions got going, bringing the heat against the Mustangs with the advantage in hand.
With control of the game now in their back pocket, it now weighed on the shoulders of Aiden Cowburn to keep the Mustangs silenced.
The senior hurler delivered big time.
While the Lions gradually built their lead, Cowburn handed out chairs left and right to the Final Four Finalists reigning from Section VI in the midst of six consecutive shutout innings, holding the Mustangs to just two hits at the dish. The rest was history, as Wellsville sustained their position in the catbird’s seat permanently to capture one of the biggest wins of their season — a 4-1 victory that handed Medina their very first loss in 2025, completing their search for Far West Regional redemption.
“Aiden brought it today,” said Lions coach Tom Delahunt. “He was in complete control from the first pitch to the last. Spotting all his pitches from his fastball, to his curveball, to his slider to keep them off balance. He controlled the running game really well, picking off a runner at first after giving up a walk to wipe the slate clean to help himself. In the third, Medina had runners on first and third and he picked another kid off to end the inning. That situation was huge with their three-hole hitter coming up to hit. He was simply outstanding today. The defense behind him was even more outstanding. In the fifth after a walk, we had a 4-6-3 double play with Andrew (Ordiway) fielding it to Ty (Vogel) and then he hum-chucked it to first to beat the runner. 95 percent of shortstops don’t make that throw, but Ty did. It was a very fun game to coach and to be a part of.”
In the midst of Cowburn’s best performance of the season on the mound, the Lions (10-3) produced a megaton of contact at the plate to jumpstart their first of two two-run frames behind the utilization of their baserunning. Immediately following a pair of 1-2-3 frames handed out by the Wellsville defense, the scoring rebooted once again for the Class B champions, as they quadrupled their lead with Ty Vogel and Matt Ritter both occupying the bases.
With one full swing shortly after, Trent Green delivered another massive blow with a two-run single into center field to extend Wellsville’s lead, ultimately out of reach.
After several missed attempts to respond back to Wellsville’s early damage, Medina worked the seventh inning in their favor to end Cowburn’s complete game shutout bid by scratching their lone run across in their final at-bats. But despite it, the Lions stood tall on the field to finish the game behind the senior hurler’s 10th and 11th strikeouts, along with a secured catch by Green in center field to officially send the Mustangs and their ongoing undefeated season back to the stables.
“Medina came into the game undefeated at 13-0 and number one in the State in Class B,” said Delahunt. “It was a game that we had circled on the calendar for a very long time after they ended their season last year. They’ve been rolling really well, and they’re right back up there again this year. It was a really good measure of where we are at this point. This win isn’t the be-all, end-all, because we could very well see them again down the road.”
The Lions finished with five total hits in the game, with Ty Vogel, Matt Ritter, Anthony Button and Karter Grover all registering one each beside Green’s colossal two-run single in the third inning. As for Cowburn, he put the finishing touches on an absolutely masterful day on the mound, striking out 11 Medina batters and walking just one to survive a game-long pitcher’s duel against Lukas Grimes of the Mustangs.
The Mustangs hurler shelled out nine strikeouts and a walk in return against the Lions to finish his complete game.
With all the momentum in the world now harnessed after one of their biggest wins of the season, the Lions will now look to put it to good use with just three games left on the docket. Coming up after the weekend, they return home to the Lion’s Den to welcome in archrival Hornell on Monday at 5 p.m.

York/Pavilion 3, Fillmore 1
HOUGHTON — On a day littered with doubleheaders across much of the region, York/Pavilion was amongst the group of teams having to endure the challenge early in the morning, starting the day off right with a shutout victory over Letchworth in Perry. A few hours later, they carried the successful burst of energy on the bus ride down to the south to meet the Eagles of Fillmore at Houghton University on Saturday.
The Eagles gave it a hard-fought fight with their visiting opposition, despite falling behind, as they used a tremendous outing of pitching from Brayden Hennard to stay within reach. They began to gain momentous traction, but in the end, time would ultimately run out as York/Pavilion survived behind an equally stellar performance from Landen Stoddard on the mound to lay claim on a 3-1 road win.
“Their pitcher threw really well and limited us in what we could do. If we had a couple of close calls pan out a little differently, the outcome would have been a little bit different. But we fought hard and showed life all the way to the end. Hennard and (Kalen) Beardsley did a great job limiting the damage that York/Pavilion provided to help get us out of some jams.” said Eagles coach Kaiden Bowers.
The tires began to spin in favor of York/Pavilion right after both defenses dealt a first inning blank against one another, as the visitors accounted for a run in each of the next three innings of play to claim the first lead of the game and build upon it.
Trailing by three upon entry to the homestretch, the Eagles (6-5) continued to work, managing a big breakthrough in the bottom of the sixth inning off an RBI issued by Isaac Wilcox. But Stoddard and the York/Pavilion defense prevented any further developments from the home team, as they held on to claim their second win of the day.
Fillmore was held to just four hits at the dish — three of them stemming right from the top of the order, as Jared Boon, James Hilman and Damon Potter (triple) each scored one. Avery Potter had the team’s last hit to add into the mix. On the mound, Hennard fanned six and walked two across his five-inning start.
The Eagles will look to work their way back into the win column Monday night with another road trip, visiting Andover/Whitesville with a 6 p.m. first pitch in Andover.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 19, Allegany-Limestone 4 (F-5)
ALLEGANY — One night removed after an outstanding defensive battle saw them prevail over the Elba Lancers, the Genesee Valley/Belfast baseball team woke up the following morning and did it all over again in resounding fashion at Allegany-Limestone, Saturday afternoon.
Working with a bounty of walks along with some strong base-running to go with some key hits, they put every piece to the puzzle together to take care of the host Gators with a 19-4 road win in five innings.
The bats came alive for a Genesee Valley/Belfast (13-1) offense that saw six different players register at least a hit. Leading the way was Evan Turybury, who was welcomed back into the lineup for the first time this season against Elba on Friday, going 2-for-2 with a triple and three RBI. Nolan Hunter followed up with two hits of his own, including a double, and scoring three times.
On the mound, despite issuing seven walks, Mason Thomas maintained his composure to pick up the victory for the visitors. The Genesee Valley/Belfast pitching staff, which also consisted of a strong relief appearance from Ben Cater, held Allegany-Limestone to just five hits.
Additional statistics and a complete box score were not made available to report upon publication.
Genesee Valley/Belfast will look to start a new week of baseball off the same way they ended it when they return to action on Monday, hitting the road for a 7 p.m. first pitch at Friendship/Scio, in Scio.
And/Whi splits Saturday doubleheader with A-A, C-R
ANDOVER — It was a doubleheader in Andover that saw plenty of ups and downs, Saturday afternoon.
To start the day, a gigantic commencement to open their game up against Alfred-Almond remained glued together despite one last attempt from the visiting Eagles to apply the pressure late. But after their 8-6 win, the Rebels of Cuba-Rushford unleashed a home run parade in the afternoon’s final contest to officially force Andover/Whitesville into a split of the action with a 10-4 win of their own.
“Every time we made a mistake, they came up with a big hit. I was very happy with our pitchers, our offense and our catchers today. Our defense really hurt us, and it’s concerning. It boils down to focus for our guys, and for taking practice reps seriously before a game and at practice. If we can clean up our defense, we are looking very solid going into Sectionals. We play every day next week, so we have to be prepared to go.” said Andover/Whitesville co-coach Jake Bannerman.
In game one, Andover/Whitesville (4-6) manufactured a strong start to their afternoon early on against the Eagles, responding to their claiming of a 1-0 lead with five runs of their own in the bottom of the second inning that ultimately kept them in front for good. The visitors would inch as close as two runs behind the hosts with their duo of runs in the third inning, but Andover/Whitesville maintained their advantage with an equal reponse later on in the fourth to take a 7-3 lead.
Alfred-Almond made one final attempt to rally back in the top of the seventh, posting their last two runs to climb back to within a pair. But in the end, Andover/Whitesville held it all together to claim victory.
The hosts went on to post their eight runs off 11 total hits in the contest, with Carter Grice leading the bats with a 2-for-3 outing that saw him record a team-leading three RBI. Colton Calladine had two hits of his own, including a double and two RBI. On the rubber, the win belonged to Gavin Frungillo, who struck out four and walked five.
In game two, the roller coaster made its descent back down the tracks against Cuba-Rushford, as the Rebels caught fire from the plate with a trio of home runs — all in the direction of a short left field porch in the middle frames. Of those smacks, a massive lead extension was provided by the first of two Lucas Haskins home runs in the top of the third inning, giving the Rebels (6-5) a 4-0 lead.
After Andover/Whitesville bounced back with a two-run sequence in the bottom half that carved their deficit in half, the visitors in blue and gray responded by extending their lead back out in the fourth with two more runs leading up to a monstrous first career Varsity hit from Chase Haas that left the park in the top of the fifth.
To put the game out of reach completely, Haskins brought his big bat back up to the plate to unleash his second home run of the game from within the team’s three-run sixth inning to take a 10-3 lead on Andover/Whitesville. Haskins finished his day with a 3-for-4 performance consisting of seven RBI. Altogether, Cuba-Rushford put together an eight-hit display on offense to pave the way forward.
As for the pitching staff on the mound, Finn Ricketts kept Andover/Whitesville at bay as long as he could by nearly putting a bow on a complete game performance with nine strikeouts and two walks before being relieved by Eli Sleggs, who went on to record the game’s final out with a strikeout.
Andover/Whitesville also recorded eight hits at the plate to power their offense, with Calladine and Vinny Joyce each recording two hits, including a double. On the hill, Calladine provided a strong outing of relief, fanning seven and walking one when he entered in the third inning and strolled with his tenure into the sixth.
Both teams are back on the diamond Monday night, with Cuba-Rushford heading back home for a 5 p.m. visit from Canisteo-Greenwood, while Andover/Whitesville looks to rebound back in Andover with a 6 p.m. contest against Fillmore.

Bolivar-Richburg 22, Friendship/Scio 4 (F-5)
FRIENDSHIP — The Bolivar-Richburg offense ran rampant at Wellman Field in Friendship to put the finishing touches on a 3-for-3 conclusion to the week following their 5-0 shutout to Arkport-Canaseraga back on Tuesday, as Landon Barkley and Braden Zilker — the first two hitters in the Wolverines batting order, headlined a plate presence that saw them record four hits each to aid the team in what was a 22-4 five-inning win over Friendship/Scio.
The Wolverines (9-4) exploded their way onto the scene bright and early in the first inning of play, establishing a strong offensive presence with a complete go-around in their lineup, and then some, to build a gargantuan 9-0 lead out of the gate that they never looked back on.
Out of their 22 total hits they would muster against Friendship/Scio (0-12), Bolivar-Richburg amassed 15 hits to go with them — four each belonging to the top two seniors in their batting rotation in Barkley and Zilker, with Barkley finishing with a 4-for-6 outing that saw him belt a two-run home run along with a double to drive in four total runs. As for Zilker, it was a perfect 4-for-4 appearance at the dish that witnessed five RBI come to light, along with scoring five runs of his own.

SOFTBALL
Genesee Valley/Belfast 12, Alfred-Almond 0 (F-5)
BELFAST — Senior Night took possession of the spotlight at the Rich Sullivan Complex in Belfast on Saturday, with the Genesee Valley/Belfast ladies paying homage to all six of their impending graduates before taking their home field for one of the very last times together as a unit against Alfred-Almond with dusk quickly approaching.
One of those seniors happens to be one of Allegany County’s best performers from inside the circle — Hannah Powers. And from start to finish in their contest against the visiting Lady Eagles, she turned in a magnificent one-hit performance while the offense exploded down the stretch to force the five-inning mercy rule into effect, as they floored it to the finish line with a 12-0 shutout of Alfred-Almond to bounce back from their Thursday night loss to Cuba-Rushford.
“That loss might be what we needed to get back on track. We have to bring this energy to every game we play at this point in the season, with Sectionals around the corner. Tonight, it was a great night to honor our seniors. They have been a great group of young ladies to coach in my first year.” said GV/Belfast coach Brooke Bradt.
Powers set the scoreless tone immediately for Genesee Valley/Belfast (11-3), festooning three straight rapid frames against Alfred-Almond, with nine of the 10 outs coming by way of strikeout. In the midst of the dominant outing, the offense broke the game open with a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second in the midst of multiple defensive errors by the Lady Eagles, as well as an RBI single from Powers.
Another scoreless barb was exchanged with the visitors across the third and fourth innings, which included Powers’ 10th strikeout of the game, leading up to a massive eight-run explosion in the bottom of the fourth from the hosts. They took full advantage of the special teams play once again along with an RBI single from Jenna Hill, to pull out of reach from the Lady Eagles to send their senior leaders out swinging.
Genesee Valley/Belfast tallied just six hits at the plate to propel their offense, with Hill and Powers leading the way with two of the hits each. Keanna Sands recorded a hit of her own, while Madison Yackeren forced the early conclusion to the contest with a walk-off single that scored Hill.
As for Powers on the mound, she froze Alfred-Almond completely, surrendering just one hit across 11 strikeouts and one walk.
Genesee Valley/Belfast will look to keep the momentum in their favor come Monday night, when they hit the road for Friendship to take on host Friendship/Scio in a 5 p.m. first pitch.

Cuba-Rushford 12, Andover/Whitesville 0 (F-5)
ANDOVER — With a quick turnaround eclipsing over the horizon for the Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford after a mammoth seventh inning allowed Wellsville to pull away on Friday, they would leave it all in the rearview mirror the following day in their latest road trip to reach the .500 mark on the campaign at the drop of a hat, as they set the tone in the first three innings of play at the plate to roll past Andover/Whitesville with a 12-0 five-inning win in Andover on Saturday.
In the opening frame of play, the Lady Rebels (6-6) knocked on the door first with over half of their batting rotation making its way to the plate to produce a 1-0 lead, as Emma Bunk produced the game’s first run on an RBI single up the middle to plate Arlah Shaffer. The advantage grew in size more after a quick 1-2-3 on defense going into the second, adding two more runs — one off an RBI double by Kate Radomski, to remain in control.
Andover/Whitesville (4-6) received an opportunity to break through and work their way onto the scoreboard in the bottom half of the second, collecting two straight hits from Olivia Waters and Lilly Ordway to put the pressure on. Although the team was able to garner a third hit from Julianna Phelps, the hosts were left stranded without a score to bring across the plate, as the momentum remained in Cuba-Rushford’s favor going forward.
The Lady Rebels fed off the frozen stand they issued to Andover/Whitesville with an insurmountable detonation in the top of the third, stringing a plethora of bats to engineer an eight-run, six-hit outing that pushed out their advantage for good. Amidst the hits: A two-run smack for both Arlah Shaffer and Aubrey Williams with the bases loaded on back-to-back at-bats, with Shaffer driving in the first pair on a single to left before Williams followed up with a triple to right center field.
Williams was then left on after Andover/Whitesville found their way off the field with the final out two at-bats later.
With the offense coming into complete fruition, the Lady Rebels looked to Lilly Farwell to hold down the fort within the circle, doing just that with five shutout innings to score the win behind five strikeouts and two walks. Finishing with the leading bat for the visitors in blue and gray was Kate Radomski and her 2-for-4 outing. Mireya Rutkowski and Lizzie Kocsis each had a double to add into the fray.
For Andover/Whitesville, Olivia Waters struck out four and walked five in her complete game on the mound. From within a six-hit effort at the dish, Waters and Ordway led the bats with two of them each.
Both teams are back on the field Monday night, with the Lady Rebels heading back home for a 5 p.m. visit from Campbell-Savona, while Andover/Whitesville regroups to take on Fillmore right back in Andover at 6 p.m.

Fri/Scio rolls past Lima Christian, downed by B-R in home twinbill
FRIENDSHIP — It was a brilliant start to the afternoon for Friendship/Scio out of the gate with a 17-5 win against Lima Christian, but it was one that was quickly cooled off by Bolivar-Richburg in Friendship on Saturday, as the team proceeded to split their home twinbill directly down the middle following a 16-1 five-inning defeat to the hands of the Lady Wolverines to close up shop.
Stats and a complete box score from Friendship/Scio’s (3-9) win over Lima Christian were not made available to report upon publication.
In game two, the Lady Wolverines (7-4) ran wild through the five innings of action against Friendship/Scio, accumulating their 16 runs on 12 hits — two of those hits traveled over the fence and out, as Rylee Whiting blasted a pair of two-run home runs, with her first coming in a three-run third inning and her last from within the team’s seven-run fifth inning.
Whiting would finish with a 4-for-5 outing at the plate.
Furthering the offensive cause for the Lady Wolverines was Jayna Thomas and Cassidy Stives, each garnering two hits. Jaelyn Kinnicutt and Danika Loucks each had a two-run hit to chip in along the way, both stemming in the fifth inning, with Kinnicutt recording a double and Loucks blasting a single to keep the pistons firing on all cylinders.
On the mound, Kylee Whiting recorded the victory with 12 strikeouts and three walks to complete her stellar performance.
For the hosts, Alexiss Herring led the sticks at the dish with two of the team’s four hits.

BOYS TENNIS
Local competitors take on Section V Individual Sectional stage
PALMYRA/SPENCERPORT — Sectional fever has begun to hit the tennis court on Saturday, as the individual competitors from far and wide all gathered north across the Rochester area to begin their trek towards glory of the highest order.
For the Eagles of Fillmore, they saw two singles competitors make deep runs through the Class B3 Tournament at Spencerport, with Isaiah Schilke making the most cavernous of runs to reach the Semifinals, as he defeated Wheatland-Chili’s Sienna Mekker (10-4) and Oakfield-Alabama’s Trevor Enes (10-2) to clinch one of the two semifinal vacancies.
In the penultimate round leading up to the Finals, The third-seeded Schilke met his match, as he fell in a 10-7 slugfest against Harley Allendale-Columbia’s Connor Stern — the No. 2 seed in the bracket.
Fillmore also saw Ezra Schilke, who possessed the No. 8 seed, make a deep run of his own with a dominant 10-0 shutout of Notre Dame-Batavia’s Chance King to score the upset. Schilke then fell in Quarterfinal action to top-seed Donovan Lincoln of Naples in a 10-0 decision.
To remain in contention for a spot in the State Qualifier, Schilke wrapped up his afternoon with a 10-5 win over Kendall’s Jonathan Esposito in the playback draw round.
In the Consolation final, the two Eagles singles competitors went one-on-one in a battle for third place, with Schilke knocking out Sisson with a 10-2 win to advance into the State Qualifier round at Brockport at the end of the month, on May 30.
In doubles action, the Eagles duo of Kallan and Carson Sanasith fell to Oakfield-Alabama’s Alex Fuller and David Schichler in the first round by a 10-7 close decision.
For head coach Randy Crouch, he is more than pleased with everyone and their performances in individual play.
“I am really proud of all four guys. They played some of their best tennis today,” he said. “Isaiah played an awesome semifinal, but I think he hit a wall by the time he got to the match with Ezra. What an effort by Ezra though. For a seventh grader to battle like he did all day to earn a spot in the State Qualifier, is absolutely amazing.”
The Lions of Wellsville sent five different competitors to the Class B1 Individual Sectional tournament — four of them in doubles play, at Palmyra-Macedon. Leading the pack was the doubles team of Michael Bidzerkowny and Wheeler Dahlgren, as the top two singles players navigated their way into the round of 16, where they ultimately fell to the hands of Honeoye Falls-Lima’s Caleb Yountblut and Grayson Etter by a 10-5 count.
The team’s second doubles team of Liam Smith and Keenen O’Connor, along with singles competitor Caydon Grimes, both lost in first round action, with Smith and O’Connor falling by a 10-4 decision against Wayne’s Alex Lay and Carter Wiggins, while Grimes was shut out by Penn Yan’s Aidan Dallos, 10-0.
For a complete in-depth look at this year’s Individual Sectional tournament, you can follow the link here to view all the brackets for each class.
Both teams will return to regular season action on Monday, with Fillmore hosting Andover/Whitesville at 5 p.m. for doubleheader action at Houghton University, while Wellsville hits the road for a 5:30 p.m. first serve at Naples.
