Friday Roundup: C-R’s Deck pours in points, nets 7 3’s in 25-point game to aid 76-56 home win over GV/Belfast; Fillmore, Fri/Scio, And/Whi boys hoops also capture wins

CUBA — It’s been proven time and time again through the course of this season that, in the case of the Rebels of Cuba-Rushford, anybody on the floor can step up at any given point. Whether it be a strong presence to the rim from guys like Donovan Breckenridge or Finn Ricketts, or even that magnificent spark off the bench that Carter Brown provides.

Last month, it was Zach Deck that conducted perhaps the biggest performance of his life on Bob Lanier Court at St. Bonaventure, hitting seven threes in what was a career-high 27-point assembly in the team’s victory over archrival Bolivar-Richburg back in mid-December.

On Friday to close out the week, it was his turn again.

The Cuba-Rushford junior captured his stroke early on with a trio of three-pointers to ignite the offense early in the first. But just as visiting Genesee Valley/Belfast began to find a rhythm of their own to go into the halftime recess, Deck eliminated it once again, netting not one or two, but four more triples in the third quarter to ensure the advantage remained on the home side of the scoreboard, as the Rebels rolled their way towards a 76-56 win in the Wighthouse.

“I was really pleased with our start to the game, and a 3-0 week to close things out,” Rebels coach Pat Wight said. “We got up early and Zach really got us rolling with his threes, and Carter added some great finishes at the rim. I felt like we did a very good job taking away the catch-and-shoot threes GV/Belfast tried to get after the first quarter, and we rebounded pretty well against their size as well. (Brayden) Cooper, (Kenton) Shultz and (Cal) Tallman all really go after the boards, and we did a decent job with that. Ian (McKenzie) is always going to get his buckets, but I felt like we really made him work for his while limiting everyone else. That’s a good team at GV/Belfast and they’re fairly young. They’ll be a tough out come February.”

Cuba-Rushford’s (8-3) foot remained anchored down to the gas pedal to start the new calendar year, as they stormed away from Genesee Valley/Belfast in a hurry, posting a rapid 11-2 run that saw them bucket the game’s first seven points along the way.

Shortly after constructing their advantage, Deck then stepped up to the plate and put his nose to the grindstone with his three-point game, netting a flurry of three-pointers while the defense continued to keep their opposition on their feet to force the ball back over in their possession once more with a 17-4 lead approaching two minutes remaining.

Genesee Valley/Belfast (3-4) found a rhythm of their own in the second quarter to carve their deficit down to as little as seven across midway, with five different contributors all pitching in on the efforts, as Ian McKenzie, Ethan Davenport, Kenton Shultz and Cal Tallman all provided the help inside, while Cane Treusdell connected on two shots at the free throw line along the way.

The buffer zone had mostly sat idle near 10 points for a vast majority of time within the frame, but right in the last minute of play, the Rebels gained a 15-point, 38-23 lead at the break behind a hard-earned basket from Donovan Breckenridge underneath the rim, and then, a long and wide-open three-pointer from Eli Sleggs inside the left wing in the waning seconds.

With the advantage firmly in their possession, all the Rebels could do now was build. In the third quarter, they proceeded to do just that behind the guidance of Deck, who powered his three-point edge one more time with his last quartet of triples in the midst of what was a 26-point stanza to officially pull themselves away from Genesee Valley/Belfast’s grasp for good.

Deck finished the contest with a game-high 25 points for Cuba-Rushford.

Following right behind him was Brown, who concluded with 17 points of his own — 10 of those coming in the first quarter. Breckenridge recorded 15 additional points to couple with eight boards, while Adam Roe had seven points to pair with 13 rebounds. On special teams, Finn Ricketts pulled down six more rebounds.

For the visitors in black with green and red lettering, Ian McKenzie led the way for the offense with his team-high 21 points. Cane Treusdell chipped in with 10 points, while Ethan Davenport and Kenton Shultz each had eight.

The two teams are back on the hardwood on Tuesday in a pair of 7:30 p.m. contests, with the Rebels shipping out to Friendship to battle Friendship/Scio, while Genesee Valley/Belfast looks to rebound with a stop at Houghton Academy.

Fillmore 63, Bolivar-Richburg 44

BOLIVAR — After what was deemed their biggest challenge thus far in their campaign at Geneseo back on Tuesday, the Eagles of Fillmore were on the move once again to find their way back into the win column over the road with a visit to Bolivar-Richburg to close out the week on Friday.

The two foes traded barbs through the first quarter early on, but as time continued to progress, the Eagles started to raise the temperature at an overwhelmingly quick rate.

When the second quarter settled in, the firestorm had reached its boiling point to bring the curtains down on a tremendous 25-point frame, providing an extension to a lead that was never threatened again, as they ultimately rolled their way towards a 63-44 win over the host Wolverines.

Through the early stages of the opening quarter, the two foes made the most of their opportunities going back-and-forth with one another before coming across a quick 5-5 tie. The start then morphed into a strong finish that permitted a big momentum boost for Fillmore (7-1) going into the next frame, as they wrapped up the first eight minutes with nine of the last 11 points.

Up by a 13-7 count, the offense soon caught fire, as they assembled their strongest finish to a quarter in the game to take a 38-23 lead into the break following their scoring of a 25-point second stanza. Cam Mucher was a big reason behind those efforts, as he aided in taking the Eagles lead and branched it into double-digit territory behind two of his four three-pointers in back-to-back fashion nearly three minutes removed from the start.

Mucher would finish leading all scorers on the floor with a game-high 30 points.

To ensure their advantage remained intact, the Eagles defense clamped the Wolverines (6-5) down one more time in the third quarter, holding them to just five points while capitalizing on a 12-5 run.

Following Mucher for the Fillmore offense was a heavy presence down low posed by JD Bialek, who recorded 12 points. Jonah Bialek had 10 points to add into the mix.

For Bolivar-Richburg, Landon Barkley paved the way forward with a team-high 22 points. Kingston Loucks finished with 14 points.

Both teams are back in action Tuesday night over the road, with the Eagles taking a trip for a 6 p.m. visit to Hinsdale, while Bolivar-Richburg heads out to Whitesville to meet Andover/Whitesville at 7:30 p.m.

Friendship/Scio 47, Houghton Academy 29

FRIENDSHIP — Friday night witnessed Friendship/Scio assemble one of their most complete performances of the season, utilizing a first half advantage and building upon it with a massive third quarter run of visiting Houghton Academy, as they navigated their way back into the win column with a 47-29 home victory in Friendship.

“We’ve been waiting for one of these games for a while,” said Friendship/Scio coach Dillon McFall. “I thought the boys did a great job executing our defensive game-plan on the (Josh) Davidson and (Jack) Prentice kids for Houghton. The guys stuck to it, and because of it, it was probably our most complete game we’ve played this year. They were locked in right from the start, and they stepped up on the floor and did a great job.”

For Friendship/Scio (3-5), it was about establishing their early lead on Houghton Academy right in the opening half, employing the first of two 15-point frames to set up shop with a 15-7 lead. Following a brief and small exchange of points to close the second quarter, the hosts brought it all together for a massive third quarter showing, as they held the visitors in blue and white to just four points in the midst of a 15-4 game-sealing run.

Three different scorers for Friendship/Scio all eclipsed the 10-point mark in the contest, with Connor Blouvet and Aiden Golden finding their rhythm from the outer perimeter to set up their brilliant nights of offense, each posting a team-high 11 points — nine of those points off three triples for both shooters.

On special teams, Blouvet recorded five rebounds and four assists.

Adding more help along the way was Jerome Harmon, who came two points just short of a double-double performance, finishing with eight points to tag alongside 11 rebounds and five assists. Jerimiah Brown pulled down 11 more rebounds off the glass.

As for the Panthers (3-4), they were led by Jack Prentice and his game-high 18 points. Josh Davidson had 10 points, while Hoang Phung chipped in with the team’s final point from the charity stripe.

Both teams will return to action on Tuesday in a pair of 7:30 p.m. starts, with Friendship/Scio welcoming Cuba-Rushford into Friendship, while Houghton Academy heads back home to face Genesee Valley/Belfast.

Andover/Whitesville 76, Hinsdale 17

WHITESVILLE — Andover/Whitesville once again saw another thoroughgoing effort across the board come into complete fruition Friday night in Whitesville, as they controlled both ends of the floor against visiting Hinsdale to set the tone and set up a perfect week of basketball on the hardwood with a 76-17 home victory.

“There’s not much to complain about after the week of basketball we had. We came out pretty strong again this evening,” Andover/Whitesville coach Jimmy Joyce said. “Colt (Calladine) and Brody (Vance) really dominated, especially in the first half. We gave up too many offensive rebounds, but once we adjusted a little bit, we really clamped down defensively and limited their scoring chances. It was another game where we got contributions from every single player. I’m very happy with the way the guys are playing, but by no means completely satisfied. We certainly have more things to work on still before we are where we need to be. We’ll need to strap in and focus even more on this gauntlet coming up next week.”

The hosts donning white wasted no time putting the hammer down on Hinsdale, as they strung together their first of three consecutive quarters where they scored at least 20 points. In that first quarter, it was the dynamic duo of Colton Calladine and Brody Vance that struck gold for Andover/Whitesville (7-3) behind their convergence to post 18 of the frame’s points.

In all, Vance and Calladine would come together and produce 46 of the team’s 76 points, with Vance leading all scorers with a game-high 27 points. Calladine concluded with 19 points of his own, while James Miller-Young had 10.

Hinsdale (2-7) was led by Chris Forney and his team-leading eight points. The Bobcats will look to find the win column back home Monday night, hosting Alfred-Almond at 6 p.m.

Andover/Whitesville now prepares to welcome in the Bolivar-Richburg Wolverines for battle on Tuesday beginning at 7:30 p.m. right back in Whitesville.

Canisteo-Greenwood 61, Campbell-Savona 24

CANISTEO — The first half was utilized to Canisteo-Greenwood’s fullest advantage come Friday night in the Canisteo Valley, as they posted their two best frames of offense to set the bar against visiting Campbell-Savona in dominant fashion, rolling towards a 61-24 victory over the Lady Panthers — a rebounding triumph following Thursday’s contest against Wellsville.

The Lady Chargers (8-3) wasted no time whatsoever making their presence known in the first half, with a strong three-point game out of the gate commencing the festivities, as Paris May and Anna Mitchell combined to record four of the team’s seven triples to kick-start an 18-8 lead of the Lady Panthers.

In the second quarter, the hosts in white and red turned their attention to the inside, with five different scorers all providing contributions. WRESTLING

Fillmore/Keshequa 46, Avoca-Prattsburgh/Hammondsport 30

FILLMORE — Senior Night was upon The Rock in Fillmore, Friday night for the Fillmore/Keshequa grapplers, with Avoca-Prattsburgh/Hammondsport paying a visit to do battle.

For two of their three seniors, Kalen Beardsley and Gavin Bush, they started the match the same way they ended it — victorious, as Beardsley got the night started with a dominant victory at 145 pounds before Fillmore/Keshequa mounted a gargantuan comeback behind five straight forfeit wins, ending with Bush’s pinfall win at 138 pounds to complete it in its entirety to finish off what was a 43-30 victory over the visiting Titans.

“It’s only fitting that Kalen got us rolling with a major decision win,” said Fillmore/Keshequa coach Jarrett Vosburg. “After a string of forfeits, freshman Ryan Benedict came from behind to pin his kid in the second period at his weight class. After more exchanges of forfeits, Gavin rounded out the evening capturing another second period pin to allow us to win all three contested matches. I was proud of our effort tonight, and I thank our three Seniors in Kalen, Gavin and Ryan Vedder, who is sitting out with a season-ending injury, for all of their many contributions to this program over the years.”

Beardsley commenced the victory for Fillmore/Keshequa with a dominant performance against Avoca-Prattsburgh/Hammondsport’s Devin Stamets, as he controlled the tempo on the mat to score a 10-2 major decision victory. In between five forfeit wins for the Titans out of the next six scheduled matches, Ryan Benedict recorded the second contested win for the hosts with a late second period pin of Trent Lewis at 170 pounds.

With a 30-10 deficit displaying on the scoreboard, Fillmore/Keshequa then scored five straight forfeit wins of their own in return, as Craig Swift (101 pounds), Eli Voss (108 pounds), Zach Nageldinger (116 pounds), Lilly Rautenstrauch (124 pounds) and Garrett Hodgson (131 pounds) all put the team back over the top with a 40-30 lead and the eventual match victory.

In the night’s final contested match, Gavin Bush took care of business with less than a minute remaining in the second period against Avoca-Prattsburgh/Hammondsport’s Bentley O’Brochta, rolling him up for the pinfall, finishing the evening in Fillmore on a very successful note behind a Senior bookending.

Fillmore/Keshequa will join Addison for a trip to Arkport-Canaseraga on Wednesday, with tri-match action slated to begin at 5:30 p.m.
