Wednesday Roundup: Wellsville wrestling sends Geffers, Mattison out in Senior Night sweep of Addison, A-P; B-R boys hoops survive double-OT at J-T, And/Whi boys net season-high 95 at Hammondsport
WELLSVILLE — Senior Night is simply a special night to behold.
In their final home match of the campaign on a blistering cold Wednesday night, that occasion arrived for two of Wellsville’s graduating leaders in Blake Geffers and Brock Mattison, who went on to wrestle for the last time in front of their home fans with Addison and Avoca-Prattsburgh/Hammondsport in town for tri-dual action.
When the book closed on the night, both Geffers and Mattison were sent out on the brightest note possible, as each Lion scored two victories in the midst of an outing filled with great success on the mat to reveal the brooms for a sweep both of their battles against the Knights and Titans to finish their homestand by 45-12 and 53-18 counts, respectively.
In the night’s first match against Addison, the Lions found their groove after a match-opening forfeit win for the Knights at 215 pounds, followed by two consecutive double forfeits at 285 and 101 pounds and a Conner Watson pinfall win over Easton Joyce at 108 pounds, the rest of the matches were all claimed by the Lions. Eight of them to be exact, totaling for 45 unanswered points altogether, with Geffers leading off the wins with a dominant display of wrestling to score a pinfall win in 56 seconds over Chloe Smith.
At 124 pounds, the winning ways for Wellsville continued on with Paul Giovanniello finding the win column with a mimicking performance of his own, starting with a 9-0 lead over Langden Green before being issued a 15-0 technical fall victory in the second period. Along with Mattison at 138 pounds, Jensen Spicer (131 pounds), Jack Cicirello (152 pounds), Mason Edwards (160 pounds) and Gabe Black (190 pounds) all recorded pinfall victories.
Sandwiched in between them all: An overpowering 10-0 major decision victory for Xander Outman over Addison’s Charlie Strauss at 170 pounds.
In the nightcap against Avoca-Prattsburgh/Hammondsport, a slew of forfeitures would fall in Wellsville’s favor right from the starting gates. Immediately following a 101-pound double forfeit, Joyce (108 pounds), Geffers (116 pounds), Giovanniello (124 pounds) and Spicer (131 pounds) were all awarded forfeit wins of their own to give the Lions a rapid 24-0 lead of the Titans.
Wellsville was then awarded their first win in competition by Mattison, who defeated Bentley O’Brochta via pinfall with 14 seconds left in the second period. Avoca-Prattsburgh/Hammondsport was awarded their first official victory of the match at 145 pounds, with Devin Stamets registering a forfeit win, but the Lions re-assumed command once again on the mat with a 15-0 technical fall win from Jack Cicirello at 152 pounds over Chase Mummey, and later, a pinfall win for Mason Edwards over Gus Oliver at 160 pounds.
Outman then scored a win of his own at 170 pounds via pinfall before Gabe Black chipped in with his at 190 pounds to help close out another dominant performance by the Lions to finish the night.
Avoca-Prattsburgh/Hammondsport garnered two more forfeit wins from the heavyweight division, with Justin Palmer (215 pounds) and Quinn Royce (285 pounds) each claiming them respectively.

B-R rolls past A-A, downed by Ark-Can in road tri-dual
ALMOND — In their first match of the new year, it was a tough battle against both Arkport-Canaseraga and host Alfred-Almond in Wednesday tri-match battle for the Bolivar-Richburg grapplers. But when all the points were gathered and the smoke cleared, the Wolverines came away with an even split of the action, rebounding off a tough 42-28 defeat to the hands of the Wolves to score a 41-24 victory over the Eagles.
In their first match against Arkport-Canaseraga, the Wolves struck all chords to set the tone against the Wolverines, garnering victories in six of the first seven matches to claim a 36-5 edge. The lone victory for Bolivar-Richburg came from their senior leader, Tavyn MacDonell, as he took care of business behind an 18-3 technical fall win over Richard Flaitz at 190 pounds.
Following a 101 forfeit win for the Wolves, their sixth victory of the night, the Wolverines would go on to finish the match strong by recording triumphs in each of the next five matches to apply the pressure late on the Wolves. The strand of victories began with an absolutely dominant performance from Teegan Sibble at 108 pounds, as she registered an 18-2 technical fall victory of her own over Ben Flaitz.
Presley McDowell (116 pounds) and Timothy Coleman (124 pounds) each scored a forfeit win, while Junior McDowell (131 pounds) turned in a quick pinfall finish along the way, defeating Conor Smith with 21 seconds remaining in the opening period of his match.
The momentum changed gears and carried into their nightcap battle with the Eagles, where they captured their winning edge once again following three consecutive forfeit wins for Alfred-Almond to start the match, with MacDonell posting the team’s first at 170 pounds with a 1:06 pinfall win over Matt Tuller.
Haizen Hall (190 pounds) and Kailob Lipka (215 pounds) each scored a forfeit win before Bolivar-Richburg collected the 24-18 lead over Alfred-Almond behind a Cameron Wilber pinfall win over Cohen Cumberbatch at 285 pounds.
After the two teams exchanged double forfeit decisions at the top of the lightweight division, Teegan Sibble went on to score her second victory of the night at 116 pounds, as she rolled towards a pinfall victory in the early stages of the second period over Thomas Davidson. Following a 124-pound win for the Eagles, the Wolverines went on to score wins from Timothy Coleman via forfeit at 131 pounds, and from Junior McDowell at 138 pounds via technical fall.
The Wolverines are now off from action until next Wednesday night, when they join alongside Avoca-Prattsburgh/Hammondsport for tri-match battle in the Canisteo Valley, visiting Canisteo-Greenwood at 5:30 p.m.
Fillmore/Keshequa downed by C-G, C-S in home tri-match
FILLMORE — The Fillmore/Keshequa wrestlers had two tough tasks ahead of them in the shape of Section V powerhouse Canisteo-Greenwood, and Campbell-Savona come Wednesday night, as the Chargers and Panthers each collected victories over the hosts inside the Rock in the respective shape of 53-24 and 42-24 decisions.
In their battle against the Chargers, Fillmore/Keshequa collected four total victories on the mat, with Lilly Rautenstrauch (124 pounds) and Gavin Bush (138 pounds) setting up an early back-and-forth exchange of victories to claim a 12-11 lead, with Rautenstrauch picking up a forfeit win before Bush rolled up Canisteo-Greenwood’s Avery Winans for the pinfall decision at the 1:28 mark of the first period.
Canisteo-Greenwood would then go on to win the next three matches before Fillmore/Keshequa navigated their way back into the win column with another forfeit win from Ryan Benedict at 170 pounds. Eli Voss has the team’s final win in the late stages of the match with one last forfeit victory at 101 pounds.
In their tussle with the Panthers, a similar start ensued with Fillmore/Keshequa garnering the hot start with wins in three of the first four matches, with Craig Swift (101 pounds), Eli Voss (108 pounds) and Lilly Rautenstrauch (124 pounds) each garnering a forfeit win in the midst of an early 18-6 lead. The Panthers went on to tie the match following back-to-back wins before the hosts were granted the lead back by Kalen Beardsley at 145 pounds, as he defeated Corbin Warner in a 4-0 decision.
Out of the five remaining matches on the docket, Campbell-Savona lay claim to four of them, all via forfeit, to help cement their victory. In between the triumphs for the Panthers, Fillmore/Keshequa received one final win from Ryan Benedict at 170 pounds, as he outlasted Brennan Bauman with a tough 10-8 decision.

BOYS BASKETBALL
Bolivar-Richburg 72, Jasper-Troupsburg 60 (F-2OT)
GREENWOOD — In Bolivar-Richburg’s first game back in action since their clash with archrival Cuba-Rushford at St. Bonaventure, they were taken the distance and much more by the Wildcats of Jasper-Troupsburg after an early head start by the hosts in white and black was erased in favor of a back-and-forth duel down the stretch.
One overtime period wasn’t enough for the two squads, as both teams went to war one final time in double-overtime to officially set the record straight.
Despite all the fight that the Wildcats continued to put against the Wolverines to remain tightly alongside them, the second and final extra session of basketball proved to be enough for the visitors in black and red to turn the tide completely, as they raced off on a massive game-ending 14-2 run of Jasper-Troupsburg to finish an incredible first game of 2025 with a 72-60 victory in Greenwood.
“Jasper-Troupsburg really worked hard and they really brought that blue collar mentality that they possess,” Wolverines coach Justin Thomas said. “They hit a bunch of shots to go with it and that didn’t allow us to put them away when we wanted to. We had a lot of chances ourselves to try and put the game away, but we stayed with it. We didn’t get off the bus until later in the first quarter when we quickened the play with a string of points before cutting things down as time went on. It wasn’t our basketball, but after a pretty long layoff, this one was a good one to get for sure.”
Both teams crashed through the first half facade in a big way to open a first half that could have went either way, with the Wildcats providing the first quarter in explosive fashion behind a nearly quarter-long 15-2 run of Bolivar-Richburg (6-4) which included the game’s first seven points out of the gate. The Wolverines would go on to make up ground to close out the session, netting the last seven points in consecutive succession.
They then turned the jets on in the second quarter with a massive run of their own, holding Jasper-Troupsburg briefly at bay with a 12-4 run to overtake the Wildcats in the driver’s seat behind a Kingston Loucks breakaway bucket with less than two minutes remaining in the half. The two foes dealt back-and-forth exchanges leading up to a go-ahead basket from Xavier Ramchuk just outside the arc to head into the break with a 24-23 lead.
The second half saw both teams lay claim on a near-even performance from within each quarter with the Wolverines pulling back ahead in the third quarter before the Wildcats closed the gap back down once again to force overtime in the fourth. The back-and-forth pace carried into the first overtime, when the visitors clinged to a 58-55 lead with fewer than 20 seconds remaining on the clock.
But after a smart workaround the court with possession, the ball landed in Landon Zver’s hands for a clutch game-tying three-pointer to ultimately force yet another overtime period.
The action worked its way towards a 63-60 Wolverines lead down the stretch of what was the final frame of play of the night, as Bolivar-Richburg now took matters into their own hands to provide one brilliant finish to the contest — a 14-2 double-overtime elongating run of Jasper-Troupsburg which saw them net the last nine points uninterrupted to cap off a tough victory over the road.
Bolivar-Richburg was paced by a breakout performance from Kingston Loucks, as he assembled his biggest game of the season to-date with a season-high 32 points — 15 of those points off five of the team’s 10 total three-pointers from the outer perimeter.
Behind him was Landon Barkley, who was held scoreless through the first half by the Wildcats, as he totaled 23 points — a concluding mark that included an absolutely glacial 12-for-15 outing at the charity stripe to aid in solidifying their victory. Brayden Zilker knocked down three more triples on his way to an 11-point performance to further Bolivar-Richburg’s cause on offense.
The Wolverines are back home Friday night to host one of their toughest challenges of the season, as they square off with the Eagles of Fillmore in a 7:30 p.m. contest.

Keshequa 45, Houghton Academy 31
HOUGHTON — A competitive first half between Keshequa and Houghton Academy was put on full display right from the start, with both teams wheeling and dealing baskets through the first eight minutes before the visiting Wildcats managed to create a halftime buffer zone going into the locker room on Wednesday.
Upon their return to the floor, the team in black and orange went on to create a brand new ballgame. Instead, they took complete command of every angle on the floor, as they posted a gargantuan third quarter shutout of the host Panthers to extend their lead insurmountably towards what was shaped into a 45-31 victory.
While Keshequa was searching for their answers down low, Houghton Academy (3-3) was able to construct an early first quarter lead behind a strong three-point game from the outer perimeter, as they scored all 12 of their points within the frame off three triples — two from the hand of Hoang Phung, and one from Jack Prentice, who also chipped in with a 3-for-3 outing at the charity stripe, to clinch a 12-10 lead of the Wildcats.
The Wildcats then began to funnel some momentum in their favor in the second quarter, garnering the edge behind the guidance of Aiden Upright, who had half of the team’s 12 points in the stanza to record a 22-17 lead going into the locker room.
In the second half, the visitors pulled out all the stops and cashed in on the game’s biggest run, as they capitalized on both ends of the floor to silence Houghton Academy completely, assembling what was a 13-0 scoreless jaunt to flip the game upside down in their favor and push their advantage out away from reach for good to secure the victory at game’s end.
Houghton Academy was paced by Prentice, who had a team-high 12 points. Phung finished with nine points, while Josh Davidson had six. Gavin Martino rounded off the scoring for the Panthers with the remaining four points.
The Panthers will look to spring back into the win column on Friday in Friendship, visiting host Friendship/Scio for tip-off at 7:30 p.m.

Andover/Whitesville 95, Hammondsport 36
HAMMONDSPORT — Wednesday night witnessed Andover/Whitesville carry over all the ingredients to produce yet another offensive thunderstorm once more back over the road in their latest trip.
This time, it was of season-best stature, as they began to make it rain right away against host Hammondsport before the thunder and lightning settled in right behind it from that point forward to produce a season-high 95-point performance in the team’s 95-36 win over the Lakers.
“I’m extremely happy with the effort from our boys tonight. We corrected some of the minor mistakes from the night before, and we got contributions from everyone right across the board,” Andover/Whitesville coach Jimmy Joyce said. “Colt (Calladine) and Brody (Vance) really dominated offensively, Vinny (Joyce) was a monster on the boards. I was really happy with the way Ethan (Warriner) played, though most of his stats won’t show up on the sheet. I could really list everyone, it was a total team effort. Their best player is difficult to defend against, and I thought we played him well for the most part. This was definitely the win we needed tonight.”
The first three quarters saw Andover/Whitesville (6-3) put their nose to the grindstone on the offensive forefront, as they dominated play with a clamorous 26-8 run of Hammondsport out of the gate — a run that continued to blossom in size over the course of time. After adding more room in the second quarter, the visitors in black solidified their advantage once and for all with a 30-point third quarter that saw five different contributors all pitch in on the efforts.
Among them was Brody Vance, who led all scorers for Andover/Whitesville with a game-high 30 points. Not far behind him was Colton Calladine and his 26-point performance. James Miller-Young chipped in with 11 points, while Vinny Joyce established his dominance down low off the glass, recording 20 rebounds.
Andover/Whitesville will look to keep their foot down on the gas come Friday night back home in Whitesville, as they welcome in Hinsdale for a 6 p.m. contest.

Cuba-Rushford 73, Hinsdale 32
CUBA — The season has officially hit the first full week of January and for just the second time on Wednesday, the Rebels of Cuba-Rushford have taken the court in front of their home crowd.
They met with visiting Hinsdale, who came right out of the gate tenaciously to hang right alongside their opposition. But in the second quarter, Cuba-Rushford tilted the balance of power in their direction permanently with a thunderous jaunt of the Bobcats to close out the half, garnering more than enough cushion to firmly hold their lead and send their home fans home with a 73-32 victory.
“Hinsdale came out and pushed us around a bit on the boards and we responded really well later on in the second and third quarters,” said Rebels coach Pat Wight. “Giving up just one offensive rebound and just one point in the second, followed by five in the third, I was really pleased with the overall effort the guys had tonight. It was finally nice to get back inside here and play a game in front of this home crowd. This is only the second time and we’re already in January.”
The damage was done by the Rebels (7-3) in the first half of play, beginning with a tough 26-point frame in the first quarter they were granted following an early 10-2 run in the first three minutes to help set the tone. The offense continued to operate at high velocity entering the next eight minute session, as they buckled down and delivered the goods with a 23-1 run of the Bobcats to push their advantage into insurmountable territory for the remainder of battle.
Three different scorers all eclipsed double figures to set the pace for the Rebels, with Carter Brown and his game-high 22 points and five steals leading the charge. Donovan Breckenridge was just a rebound shy of assembling a double-double performance, finishing with 18 points and nine boards. Zach Deck was hot from downtown, sinking four of the team’s five triples on his way to a 14-point game.
On special teams, Dean Frank recorded six steals and handed out five assists, while Eli Sleggs was strong off the glass with 10 boards — a team-high.
For Hinsdale (2-6), Tyler Richards led the scoring with eight team-high points. Cody Hand was right behind him with seven points of his own, while Robert Childs had six.
Both teams are back on the hardwood Friday night, with the Rebels welcoming in Genesee Valley/Belfast for battle in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off, while Hinsdale hits the road for a 6 p.m. visit to Whitesville to take on Andover/Whitesville.

Oswayo Valley 43, Bolivar-Richburg 12
SHINGLEHOUSE, PA — Down below the border on Wednesday, the Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg were zipping along in the driver’s seat with wins in their last four games as they looked to continue their winning ways with a visit to Oswayo Valley.
Despite points being rare to come by in the first eight minutes, it was a frame that saw the Lady Wolverines take care of business with the game’s first lead heading into the next frame of action. In that second quarter, the tide was turned by the Lady Green Wave, as they put all the pieces of the puzzle together to net a stellar end to the first half with a big run of their opposition to put towards what eventually formed into a 43-12 home win.
The Lady Wolverines (4-5) found a slight advantage in the midst of their first quarter battle with the Lady Green Wave, with Carmen Crowley helping establish the offense with four of the team’s six points coming from down low and at the charity stripe off a 2-for-2 outing. But then the door was slammed shut by the hosts, as Oswayo Valley turned up the heat and went on a 14-4 first half run to close out the frame with the 19-10 lead in their possession.
The window of opportunity was opened once again by the Lady Green Wave to ensure that all the momentum was siphoned in their favor, as they went on to score nine consecutive points while holding Bolivar-Richburg scoreless from all angles on the floor in the third quarter to help finish off their victory.
Crowley led all Lady Wolverines scorers with a team-high eight points. Emma Sisson and Sydney Faulkner each had two points.
Bolivar-Richburg will regroup and return to action next Wednesday night with a 6 p.m. trip to Friendship to battle host Friendship/Scio.
