Wednesday Roundup: Brockway goes distance vs. A-L, fans 9 while Lions offense remains hot to score 6th win in first 7 games with 11-3 victory; GV/Belfast, C-R, Fillmore golf triumph in season debuts
WELLSVILLE — Getting back to the grindstone on back-to-back nights can become one of the more difficult tasks for teams to undertake. It was an assignment that the Lions of Wellsville — winners of five of their first six games, were facing when they carried an 8-4 win over Olean at St. Bonaventure back home to the Den to square off against Allegany-Limestone the next night.
Although the weather forecast provided some uncertainty revolving around Thursday’s battle with the Gators, the tarp was immediately unraveled upon their return home to cover the field throughout the night, and then re-rolled it up in the nick of time right before first pitch over 16 hours later.
In their last meeting at the beginning of the campaign, the Lions worked their way back from behind after an 8-3 deficit to the Gators by cementing an unbelievable rally consisting of 15 unanswered runs to claim an 18-8 victory. This time around though, it was different, with both teams remaining stride-for-stride with one another across the opening sequences.
With a one-run lead in hand and Allegany-Limestone gradually creeping closer, Cooper Brockway was not going to allow the Gators to give way.
The Wellsville senior was at his best.
What momentum was built off his strong tenure on the hill, it would carry over to the offense where they would scratch runs across home plate in any way they could. From laying the lumber down to using their agility and awareness to work their way around the bases, Wellsville did it all to maximize their 3-2 lead of Allegany-Limestone and transform it into an insurmountable advantage off eight straight runs in the middle frames, pulling away and towards a sixth win in their first seven games with an 11-3 victory over the Gators to complete the series sweep.
“We had a hard time capitalizing with some runners that we had on base. Our bats have won us our games through the first part of the season, but now our pitching has started to take over,” said Lions coach Tom Delahunt. “It’s nice to see them making big pitches at times. Cooper has had a couple of really good starts for us, beginning last week in Myrtle. He’s been hitting all his spots and it was nice to see him step up when we couldn’t get those timely hits. We stranded a bunch of runners, most of them in scoring position, which allowed the game to get close at times. But we managed to break it open when we could, all while he was doing his thing on the mound.”
After both teams traded quick twists of defense on a 1-2-3 basis, the scoring would break open for the Lions (6-1) in the bottom of the second. To go with his superb outing on the hill to that distinction of time, Brockway was able to help supply the game’s first run off an RBI single into right field by Trenton Green.
Allegany-Limestone threatened across the first two innings of play, but in the top half of the third, they ultimately found an opening to exploit and take the lead away from the Lions by converting a game-tying and go-ahead sequence in back-to-back at-bats, with a fielder’s choice off the bat of Zane Gleason getting it started before a Caleb Strade double into the right center field gap allowed them to propel ahead with what would be their only lead of the contest.
Wellsville fired back in the bottom half however to force one last lead change, rebounding with the aid of Aiden Cowburn and his base hit up the middle to poke in Brennen Geffers, who originally led off the frame after taking a hit inside the box. After a fielding error was committed by the Gators in the field, the Lions were able to take full advantage of the opportunity to hurdle back ahead with a 3-2 lead.
Then, the offense began to intensify.
In the midst of Brockway’s outstanding sequence in the middle stanzas for the hosts in black and orange, the offense proceeded to strike from all angles of the field, gathering two more runs in the fourth off special teams — the first on a wild pitch to the backstop during Alex Green’s at-bat, followed by a dead ball after a line drive shot hit the field umpire in between shortstop and third base, awarding an extra base for every Lion occupying a base.
It didn’t stop there for Wellsville, as they picked up where they left off with their first three batters of the fifth inning reaching immediately to load the bases behind the Gators defense. More special teams play was capitalized upon by the Lions, courtesy of a four-run frame powered by baserunning on wild pitches to the backstop to make it a 9-2 lead.
At the end of the night, the middle frames paid all the dividends that Wellsville could muster, as they were able to screech past the Gators behind Brockway’s guidance on the mound, going all seven innings while striking out nine and walking just one. At the plate, Geffers led the way with a hit and scored a team-leading three runs.
As a cohesive unit however, the hosts managed to steal 14 bases to move into scoring position.
“You can’t get much better than that,” said Delahunt. “The kids are playing with confidence and we can’t wait for the next game ahead. It’s nice to have this many games done at this stage, because you’re not rushing to play at the end of the season. Getting those early games in will be nice down the stretch.”
On Saturday, the Lions will hit the road for a big visit to Arkport-Canaseraga, where they will take on the host Wolves in a 1 p.m. first pitch.

SOFTBALL
Friendship/Scio 18, Letchworth 1
GAINESVILLE — Nearly 24 hours removed from a season-opening perfect game twirled against Genesee Valley/Belfast, Nevaeh Ross nearly repeated history for Friendship/Scio in their quick turnaround over the road on Wednesday, as she assembled another powerful and dominant performance within the circle at Letchworth, twirling a dynamic one-hitter behind 17 strikeouts while the offense came to life in their 18-1 victory.
“Nevaeh had another nice outing for us tonight. She really shined at the plate as well,” said Friendship/Scio coach Deb Warner. “She got us started in the first inning with a shot over the left field fence and added a couple of doubles along the way. She almost had that perfect game again, but credit to Letchworth, they continued to battle and made us work on defense in the last inning.”
Ross scored an outstanding start to her game to energize Friendship/Scio (3-2) on all fronts, beginning in the top of the first inning with the destruction of the ball to deep left field for a lead-off solo home run to break the ice against Letchworth. Following her breaking of the ice at the plate, the senior phenom would then settle in from inside the circle and shell out three straight 1-2-3 innings consisting of nine strikeouts to keep the hosts off the board.
With the momentum leaning directly in their favor, it would remain in that direction while the Friendship/Scio offense continued to hold their foot down on the gas with their bats, scoring seven more runs across the next two innings of play to further cushion their lead. Entering the seventh inning, the possibility of a second perfect game remained within reach for Ross. But with two outs, Letchworth would spoil the bid with a single into the outfield.
It would serve as their lone hit of the game, as they navigated their way home a short time later off an error to eliminate the shutout. Despite it, Ross would put a wrap on a dominant one-hit victory in the circle while posting three of the team’s nine hits at the plate, going 3-for-5 with her lead-off homer, two doubles and five runs scored. Morghyn Ross added in a 2-for-3 outing with five RBI and two more runs scored.
If weather permits coming up on Friday, Friendship/Scio will get set to host their home opener with a 5 p.m. first pitch against Avoca-Prattsburgh in Friendship.

GOLF
Genesee Valley/Belfast 197, Wellsville 205
WELLSVILLE — With overcast skies surrounding the Wellsville Country Club, along with a slight and spotty rain shower, Genesee Valley/Belfast and the host Lions of Wellsville engaged in close quarters battle from start to finish on Wednesday. But when it was all said and done, Grant Preston’s medalist round for the visitors gave them just enough of a boost forward to record the 197-205 edge for their first win on the links this Spring.
Preston paced the Genesee Valley/Belfast (1-0) scorecard with the match’s best round, as he carded the lowest round of 41. Adding further assistance along the way was Will Guilford, who provided a round of 47. Chris Weaver chipped in with his fired round of 50, while Dakota Hemphill rounded off with a 59.
Wellsville (0-1) was powered by a strong team-low round of 45 fired by senior Ethan Bailey. Jackson Shoughrue followed behind with his round of 52, while Noah Brogan and Fletcher Kaye finished the scoring with their rounds of 53 and 55, respectively. The Lions are back in action Friday night, if weather permits, with a visit to Indian Hills State Golf Course in Painted Post to take on Waverly and Addison at 4:30 p.m.
Next on the docket for Genesee Valley/Belfast is a 4 p.m. visit to Ischua Valley in Franklinville to take on the host Bobcats of Hinsdale, next Wednesday evening.
Cuba-Rushford 233, Bolivar-Richburg 253
BOLIVAR — Sebastian Saulter and Kaden Bell ensured a strong start for Cuba-Rushford’s campaign on the links Wednesday night, as they paved the way for win number one on the season against host Bolivar-Richburg at the Bolivar Golf Club with a 233-253 victory.
Saulter and Bell led the Cuba-Rushford (1-0) golfers at the top of the scorecard, as they each clubbed the match’s medalist round of 52. Following behind was Ethan Fries with his round of 60, while Coen Kellogg had a 69.
The Wolverines (0-1) were paced by a team-leading round of 59 shot by David Abdo. Right behind him was Cayden Gaines and his round of 60. James Margeson followed by carding a round of 62, while Zach Mitchell finished the scoring with a 72.
Both teams are back on the links next Wednesday night in a pair of 4 p.m. tee times, with Cuba-Rushford heading back home to Allegheny Hills to host Fillmore, while Bolivar-Richburg hits the road for the first time to take on Wellsville.
Fillmore 183, Hinsdale 257
RUSHFORD — Although the conditions were less than ideal across a Wednesday night on the grounds of Allegheny Hills in Rushford, the Eagles of Fillmore still made their 2024 debut on the links a massive success, as they garnered medalist round honors from Reid Cockle to aid in their 183-257 victory over the visiting Bobcats of Hinsdale.
Cockle navigated his way to the top of Fillmore’s (1-0) scorecard at the end of the night behind a phenomenal medalist round, as he fired a match-low score of 44 to ignite the victory for the hosts. Sam Cool and Anderson Wiltsey were not far behind him, as both Eagles chipped in with a round of 46, while Layton Sanasith rounded off with his fired round of 47.
Hinsdale (0-1) was captained by a team-low round of 49 shot by Caden Miller. Jenna Sutton chipped in with a 68, while Brett Bergstrom and Chris Forney rounded off with rounds of 69 and 71, respectively.
Both teams will return to the links next Wednesday night in 4 p.m. starts, with Fillmore remaining put at Allegheny Hills to take on host Cuba-Rushford, while the Bobcats head home to Ischua Valley in Franklinville to welcome in Genesee Valley/Belfast.

Wellsville opens 2024 campaign with three big wins over B-R, Fri/Scio, Fillmore
HOUGHTON — You could not ask for a better evening for a night on the track on Wednesday. Four teams — Wellsville, Bolivar-Richburg, Friendship/Scio and Fillmore all converged on the confines of Burke Field at Houghton University to strut their stuff for the first time in 2024.
For the Lions of Wellsville, it was a first meet filled with excellence across the board. Led by the performances of Xavier Scott and reigning New York State Champion thrower Kaylee Oswald from the field, both the boys and girls teams were able to collect and score three big wins to sweep the field of competition behind multiple first place finishes to open their new campaign outdoors with the biggest of bangs.
The boys team scored a grand total of 14 first place finishes to propel their ascension towards victory, as they recorded victories over the Wolverines (128-3), Friendship/Scio (121-9) and the host Eagles (112-20) behind multiple top finishes from Xavier Scott and David Clark on the track, as Scott took home gold with his winning times in the 100 dash, 110 hurdles and from the field in the long jump, while Clark provided wins of his own in both the 200 and 400 dashes.
To go with a complete sweep of all three relays — the 400, 1600 and 3200, the Lions also garnered a win from six different competitors in action, with Collin Perkins (1600 run), Ben Jordan (3200 run), Jack Davis (400 hurdles), Xander Outman (shot put), JJ Howard (high jump) and Lucius Griggs all posting triumphant performances.
As for the Lady Lions, they followed up with a phenomenal performance of their own behind 10 first place finishes in a complete sweep across the board against Bolivar-Richburg (128-3), Friendship/Scio (121-9) and Fillmore (112-20), with Kaylee Oswald and Pala Alsworth both leading the way with a pair of wins each.
Oswald swept both the shot put and discus events to kick off her junior campaign by picking up right where she left off from the New York State Championship meet last season from the throwing pit, while Alsworth collected her pair of victories in the 400 dash and the long jump, respectively. Like the boys squad, the Lady Lions also collected three straight victories in the relay department to go with three additional wins from Caelyn Stevens (100 dash), Kaylie Fuller (3000 run) and Brooklyn Dahlgren (high jump).
With a pair of wins in the wagon, both Fillmore boys and girls squads placed second overall after collecting wins over Friendship/Scio (67-36, 58-37) and Bolivar-Richburg (85-23, 63-45). The boys team saw a pair of first place finishes come into fruition from both Henry Sardina and Gage Hartman, as they respectively claimed victory in the 800 run and discus. On the girls side, Rachel Hatch scored a sweep of both hurdling events, the 100 and 400 hurdles to pair with an 800 run triumph from Ava Sylvester.
The Friendship/Scio boys claimed victory by a 58-34 count over Bolivar-Richburg to place third overall, while the Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg placed third with a narrow 55-51 win over Friendship/Scio behind their pair of first place finishes by Carmen Crowley in the triple jump and Raegan Giardini in the 1500 run. As for their opposition, Cassidy Scholla claimed victory in the 200 dash for Friendship/Scio to score the team’s lone win.
Wellsville is back home tonight to host their home opener, if weather permits, as they welcome Alfred-Almond, Bolivar-Richburg and Portville to the Lion’s Den at 5 p.m.

GV/Belfast brings out brooms for season-opening sweep of C-R, Houghton
BELMONT — Paced by two outstanding performances from Thayne Cobb and Sophie Zillgitt, the two Genesee Valley/Belfast tracksters combined to record seven victories to aid in bringing out the brooms for a complete sweep of action on their home turf Tuesday night in Belmont, as they edged their way past visiting Cuba-Rushford and Houghton Academy to start their 2024 campaign.
Cobb captained the Genesee Valley/Belfast boys team with three big wins across each spectrum of the meet, as he helped aid a close 60-55 win over the Rebels to go with a 107-1 win over the Panthers behind his first place finishes in the 100 and 200 dashes, as well as the winning distance from the sand bunker in the triple jump. Following up behind him was Noah Miller and his sweep of both distance events on the track, scoring the winning times in the 1600 and 3200 runs.
In addition to their 1600 and 3200 relay wins, Genesee Valley/Belfast scored two more wins from Lannden Tilton (400 dash) and Callahan Tallman (high jump) to finish off a nine-win Spring debut outdoors. As for the ladies, Zillgitt led the way with four wins of her own — two from each side of the meet, collecting them all in the 800 run, 100 hurdles, high jump and long jump to power the team’s 65-45 win over the Lady Rebels and 84-12 win over the Lady Panthers.
Furthering the team’s cause were Bayleigh Tallman, Samayah Lussier and Allyson Hazelton, as they each scored winning times on the track in the 400 dash, 1500 run and 400 hurdles, respectively to pair with a 1600 relay victory they each ran a victorious leg in.
Cuba-Rushford placed second overall in the meet, with the boys team claiming a 46-3 win over Houghton Academy and the girls squad following up with a 50-11 triumph of their own. For the boys team, Tristan Clayson and Ethan Coleman each propelled to victory in two events, with Clayson sweeping both the shot put and discus events from the field, while Coleman proclaimed victory in the long jump and pole vault.
To pair with their winning 400 relay victory, Joe Wojciechowski had the final individual win for the Rebels, speeding towards victory with the win in the 800 run.
Aiding the Lady Rebels were two strong performances from both Cloey Larabee and Alleyah Gross, as the two performers each recorded two victories, with Larabee racing to victory in the 100 and 200 dashes, while Gross performed the complete sweep of both the shot put and discus throwing events.
Along with a winning 400 relay, Karleigh Truax (triple jump) and Lily Tompkins (pole vault) cashed in on Cuba-Rushford’s final two individual wins of the meet. The Rebels will head home to open up the home slate of their schedule with a 5 p.m. meet against Bolivar-Richburg on Tuesday.
If weather permits, Genesee Valley/Belfast will head back home to host Salamanca tonight, beginning at 5 p.m.
