Friday Roundup: Russell’s hat trick helps Lady Eagles put bow on 3rd straight unbeaten regular season with 7-0 road shutout of Wellsville
WELLSVILLE — The team to beat in recent seasons in Allegany County, and in part, Section V, has been the Lady Eagles of Fillmore.
Entering the final night of the 2021 regular season, the team was one win away from completing their third straight undefeated season. In order to do that, they would have to do it over the road inside the Lion’s Den in Wellsville.
The Lady Eagles started fast in the first 20 minutes of play, and that burst of energy came from the foot of Hope Russell, who recorded a first half hat trick to set up what was a five-goal session, growing larger in the second half in what was a 7-0 shutout win to finish 16-0 on the season.
The win for Fillmore would also be their 51st straight game without a single loss being recorded, and that would come after a seven-goal, 20-shot barrage against the Lady Lions, led by Russell’s hat trick that began just six minutes into the game to get the team on the board.
At the 14th minute mark, Russell added her second of the game off an unassisted basis before capping off her hat trick near the midway mark off a pass provisioned by Zoe Beardsley. The score would remain a three-goal advantage up until the last three minutes of the half.
Sophia Templeton and Cece Schmidt recorded back-to-back goals in just a single minute to branch Fillmore’s lead to five, with Madison Geertman dishing out a pass to Schmidt to conclude the first half.
Templeton would go on to record her second goal of the game just four minutes into the final session. Amelia Rose would follow with Fillmore’s final goal off an Emily Krzeminski pass right at the midway mark to wrap up the perfect regular season finish.
In all, Fillmore went on to outshoot the Lady Lions (4-11) by a 20-4 count, with Preslee Miller and Alex Thur combining to make all four stops, while Makenna Dunbar made 13 saves for Wellsville.
The regular season is over for both teams, as they now await their fate in the Sectional Tournament, as Fillmore heads in with a perfect 16-0 record, while Wellsville finishes up at 4-12 overall.
Cuba-Rushford 2, Friendship/Scio 0
CUBA — Sofia Riquelme supplied the Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford with an offensive rapid fire in the early stages of the opening half, as she scored both of the team’s goals to record a 2-0 lead that the team never lost, as they went towards their 10th win of the regular season, finishing it strong by a 2-0 count on Friday.
Both goals for the Lady Rebels (10-6) were scored right near the midway point of the first half, building a lead that was secure enough to hang onto for the victory, as Riquelme found the back of the net at the 22:42 and 21:53 marks — a 51-second span, off passes dished along by Taylor Searle in the wing.
The two goals were a part of a 15-shot offensive effort for the hosts in blue and white, as they held Friendship/Scio (3-12-1) to just two shots on defense back the other way, with Elysa Tylor making both stops to record her first shutout of the season.
In goal for the visitors, Nevaeh Ross made 10 saves.
Both teams are now finished with the regular season, as they now await their respective position in the Sectional Tournament this weekend.
Bishop Kearney 7, Bolivar-Richburg 0
BOLIVAR — There was one common denominator in the midst of what was a scorching hot display of offense put on by visiting Bishop Kearney on Friday — Kaia Goode, who scored all seven goals for the Lady Kings, as they rolled past Bolivar-Richburg in a 7-0 shutout to end the regular season.
Goode gave Bishop Kearney a 3-0 lead at the break with her first half hat trick, adding her last four goals in the final 40 minute session of the evening to solidify the win for the visitors.
Bolivar-Richburg posted 11 shots on the Lady Kings goal on offense, all of which were saved.
The Lady Wolverines will now await Sectional seeding this weekend in the Class C2 Tournament, finishing with an overall record of 8-8.

BOYS SOCCER
Fillmore 2, Wellsville 0
WELLSVILLE — Perhaps the hottest team in Allegany County all season long has been the Fillmore Eagles. After the Lady Eagles finished their regular season with a perfect regular season under their belts, it was the boys turn to put their 11-game win streak on the line in the nightcap against Wellsville.
Like their previous matchup against the Lions back home in Fillmore, the Eagles had to battle the midfield for the majority of the first half, which resulted in a scoreless tie heading into break.
Then the goals came, and the Eagles made sure the momentum garnered would remain in their favor, as they scored a goal at the beginning and end of the final 40 minute session, while the defense held Wellsville in check for a shutout performance to end their regular season with 12 straight wins in their 2-0 decision on Friday.
“We completely controlled all parts of the game. We limited their chances to virtually none,” said Eagles assistant coach Jordan Mullen. “It was our most complete performance of the season thus far. We missed a penalty kick about 20 minutes into the game, but we were able to build something off of that to carry into the second half. It needs to be mentioned that it was one of the best officiated games of the season, with Corky (Spangler) and Keith Holmok, they were outstanding.”
After both teams exchanged a great deal of battle all through the midfield in the first half, the offense came to fruition in the second half for the Eagles (14-2), as Jack Cool broke the ice just three minutes after the break off a feed provided by Deen Muzaid-Omar, finding the back of the net behind Logan Dunbar.
The score would remain a one-goal advantage in Fillmore’s favor all the way to the end, when the game was officially put on ice by Muzaid-Omar, scoring a goal himself off a pass fed by Zach Sisson with four minutes remaining to create all the separation they needed to earn the shutout win under the lights in the Lion’s Den.
Fillmore outshot Wellsville (5-10-1) by a 14-3 count, with Luke Colombo picking up the victory in between the posts with all three saves. On the other end, Dunbar put a stop to 12 shots he saw on goal for the Lions.
The regular season is over for both teams, as Fillmore heads into the second season holding a record of 14-2 overall, and will likely garner one of the top seeds in Class D1, while Wellsville finishes up 5-10-1 overall and will wait for their spot in the Class B2 bracket.
Scio 4, Friendship 0
SCIO — After encountering their sixth overtime game of the season just 24 hours ago, the Scio Tigers made sure it was quickly an instance that was put in the rearview mirror, as they finished the regular season above .500 with a 4-0 shutout of visiting Friendship, Friday night.
The Tigers offense was led by Jordan White, who recorded a hat trick, with his first coming in the opening 40 minute session to give the team a 1-0 lead over the Golden Eagles at the break.
The lead grew to a pair in the second half as Scio (7-6-2) began a scoring thread with their last three goals coming within the session with Tyler Nickerson extending the lead to a pair with his first career Varsity goal off a pass provided by Jaxson Warboys.
White would then score his next two goals to make sure the team’s lead was permanently cemented in the end, securing the victory behind a 21-2 outshooting of Friendship (1-15) on the attack.
In goal, Ethan Davenport, Brenden Loucks and Max Morris all saw time in between the posts for the Tigers, combining to make two stops, while Taylor Moore set aside 17 shots for Friendship.
Both teams will now await Sectional seeding in the Class D2 Tournament this weekend, as Scio concludes by finishing their regular season going 7-2-2 after beginning the year 0-4, finishing at 7-6-2, while Friendship concludes at 1-15 overall.
