Friday Roundup: Fillmore boys, GV/Belfast girls claim County titles to close out regular seasons; No. 9 Lady Rebels softball starts Sectionals with upset win at No. 8 York

WELLSVILLE — Before Sectionals on the track and out in the field takes not only the surrounding local area, but Section V in its entirety by storm, there was one more piece of business to attend to before the regular season could officially close its final chapter in the book — a chance to earn some ribbons and the right to be the best of the best in the County.

The Allegany County Championship meet. The hunt was officially on, as all five track teams converged together at the John J. Rigas Track and Field Complex in Wellsville to decide it all.

When all the times, distances and heights were recorded and finalized at the end of the night, the Fillmore boys and the Genesee Valley/Belfast girls were on top of the county, as they became champions with the Eagles placing 165 first place points, and 126 first place points propelling the Genesee Valley/Belfast girls towards their final piece of hardware before they take Section V’s biggest stage next week.

Genesee Valley/Belfast’s Championship-clinching performance was secured behind Sophie Zillgitt and Angel Jimerson, as each recorded a pair of victories out of the team’s seven individually, with Zillgitt recording top finishes in the 100 hurdles and long jump, while Jimerson provided a complete sweep in both throwing events with winning distances in the shot put and discus. Sophia Gambino and Allyson Hazelton added the team’s final pair of individual wins, with Gambino claiming first in the 400 sprint, while Hazelton hurdled her way to the finish line in the 400 hurdles.

Genesee Valley/Belfast would also add one relay victory in the 1600 relay as the event’s lone competitor.

On the boys side, four first place ribbons and a slew of secondary finishes were garnered with Hayden Burnell and Thayne Cobb leading the charge, as the two recorded first place wins in the 400 hurdles and triple jump, pairing them with two relay victories stemming from the 400 and 1600 relay events.

The Eagles of Fillmore claimed top honors for their boys team behind five first place finishes individually, two from Henry Sardina who raced his way towards triumph in the 400 and 800 sprints. Ernie Lipscomb and Eli Strickland each followed behind with wins in the 1600 and 3200 runs, respectively to tag alongside the team’s 3200 relay victory.

As for the Lady Eagles, they would finish with 38 points behind a trio of secondary finishes from Tenlee Miller (400 hurdles), Alex Thur (shot put) and Sophia Pastorius (discus).

Cuba-Rushford would witness both boys and girls teams record third place finishes to follow up behind Genesee Valley/Belfast and Fillmore. The Rebels saw just three individual victories and multiple secondary finishes come into ultimate fruition, two of them coming off a complete sweep in the throwing events by Tristan Clayson, as he recorded wins in the shot put and discus. Ethan Coleman followed with his winning height in the pole vault.

The Lady Rebels followed suit with four victories of their own, three of them individually from Libby Drum (3000 run), Karleigh Truax (triple jump) and Lily Tompkins (pole vault) to pair alongside their lone win across the relay department, grabbing the ribbon in the 400 relay event.

SOFTBALL

Class C2 First Round

No. 9 Cuba-Rushford 15, No. 8 York 7

YORK — You couldn’t ask for a better time for the bats to come alive for the Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford. To begin their Sectional journey Friday night, the No. 9 seeds kept No. 8 York shut down through the opening sequences of battle over the road while taking full advantage themselves with a 2-0 lead that grew to as large as eight after a six-run fourth helped set up what was a 15-7 upset to move onto the Quarterfinal round.

Through the first three innings, the Lady Rebels (10-8) kept York off the board while the offense began to heat up with the game’s first advantage, scoring a run in each the first and third innings to claim a 2-0 lead. It would only be the beginning, as they were able to shift the momentum into a fourth inning with six more runs to create an 8-0 cushion on the Lady Golden Knights.

It would begin with a single from Taylor Searle that quickly turned into back-to-back RBI doubles from Riley Keller and Aubrey Williams. A short time later, Kate Radomski added perhaps the biggest piece of damage out of the seven-hit barrage with a two-run home run.

York wouldn’t go away quite yet, as they went on to score six straight runs to chip away at their deficit, including a five-run bottom of the fifth that closed the gap down to an 8-6 lead for Cuba-Rushford.

But the Lady Rebels had one final card to play in the top of the seventh. With the Lady Golden Knights hot on their trail, they ensured they remained in the rearview mirror with a five-run final stand led by a massive three-run blast by Williams to help end the game.

In all, the visitors in gray and blue compiled 15 runs off 16 hits at the plate, with Taylor Searle’s overpowering 4-for-5 outing at the plate electrifying the bats, recording a triple and scoring four runs. Williams finished with three hits, including her home run and double, totaling five RBI. Riley Keller added in two hits including a big three-run double to help the team’s cause in the fourth inning, pairing the slug with a triple.

On the mound, the victory belonged to Sydney Howard across four innings of outstanding pitching, allowing just one run across five strikeouts and two walks.

Next up is the Class C2 Quarterfinal round, where they will face a familiar face for a spot in the Semifinal round — No. 1 Bolivar-Richburg, as the two rivals come together for the third and final time at Stan Harris Field on Monday at 5 p.m.

Cuba-Rushford 101 602 5 – 15 16 3

C-R – Sydney Howard (WP) (5K, 2BB), Jordyn Radomski (5) (4K, BB) and Riley Keller.

YORK – Merideth Holland (LP) (CG, 11K, 3BB) and Anna Lyness.
