Thursday Roundup: C-G’s Sarvis breaks open pitcher’s duel with GV/Belfast, blasts enormous triple to ignite big 6th inning in 7-4 win; Green smacks 2-run bomb, totals 7 RBI in Lions victory over C-R

BELFAST — The emotions after last night’s heroic victory over Oswayo Valley on Senior Night at the Rich Sullivan Complex resonated all throughout the night and into Thursday’s regular season finale right back where it all left off since that swing from Evan Turybury.

With momentum in the wheel house to use towards a strong finish to carry into the postseason, they were provided with an opportunity for redemption against Canisteo-Greenwood — a team they battled with until the very end within what was a 1-0 duel back in early April.

Like that game in Canisteo over a month ago, it was no different in their latest installment to close out the season series, with Canisteo-Greenwood’s Taige Stewart and Genesee Valley/Belfast’s Ryan Daciw going toe-to-toe across their starts on the mound. At a point in time where the Redskins were able to claim the game’s first lead, they would do something that they weren’t quite able to do previously.

Build on it.

Canisteo-Greenwood was able to halt all momentum that Genesee Valley/Belfast carried over, as the pitching staff combined to toss five straight shutout innings while breaking the ice on offense in return, taking an early lead that was branched out significantly by Evan Sarvis in the top of the sixth in a game-breaking sequence while preserving the eventual victory for the Redskins in his relief appearance in the seventh, en route to a 7-4 road win under the lights.

“They tried and battled hard, but there were a lot of mental errors tonight,” said GV/Belfast coach Kevin Scott. “We cannot afford to have those. We started hot after carrying it over last night, but the bad inning made us spiral out of control. It was a letdown after a big night yesterday, and now Sectionals are here. Hopefully we can bring it back together, because we’re at the point where it’s one-and-done now.”

Three straight shutout innings were exchanged between Stewart and Daciw on the hill to lead their respective defenses through the course of time. Each team would produce multiple chances to strike, with Genesee Valley/Belfast getting their first prime opportunity in the bottom of the third, placing a pair of runners on base after back-to-back walks. With both runners advancing into scoring position, they would ultimately remain on base after an inning-ending pop out.

That would help scratch across offense for the Redskins immediately following in the top of the fourth, as Kaden Mitchell delivered a big single into left center field to bring in Thomas Sirianni. The lead for Canisteo-Greenwood would remain intact up until the top of the sixth when a bases-loaded situation turned into a momentum shifter, as Evan Sarvis delivered a massive triple to deep right field to free every single base up in the team’s four-run frame, helping branch the lead to 5-0.

Genesee Valley/Belfast wouldn’t back down without a fight in the last two innings however, as they scored all four of the runs off key baserunning on special teams play, with three of them being scratched across in the bottom of the sixth, with the first coming on a bases-loaded walk to erase the game-long goose egg. A wild pitch and errant throwdown to second base would allow the last two runs of the frame to score, cutting their deficit down to a pair.

But Canisteo-Greenwood responded with more distance on their lead, scoring two bonus runs off baserunning of their own. The Redskins would then look to Sarvis to close up the victory for good in the bottom of the seventh. Although Genesee Valley/Belfast was able to chip away one last time with a run stemming off another wild pitch, Sarvis would ensure the victory for the visitors in red with a big third-out strikeout.

The win for the Redskins was awarded to Kevin Sirianni in relief, as he struck out three and walked four in relief of Stewart, who went the first three innings with seven strikeouts and three walks. At the plate, Mitchell led the bats with a 2-for-4 outing and his RBI single in the fourth inning. Garrett Charles added a hit and drove in a run.

Genesee Valley/Belfast was paced by Evan Turybury, who had two of the team’s three hits. Thai Norasethaporn had the other, recording a double. On the hill, Ryan Daciw handed out eight chairs and walked four in his start that elongated into the fifth inning.

Sectionals will now take effect on the horizon, as Genesee Valley/Belfast’s regular season has come to a close with a record of 8-10 overall.

Wellsville 12, Cuba-Rushford 2 (F-6)

WELLSVILLE — To say that the Lions of Wellsville are more than elated to have Alex Green back in the lineup would be the most massive of understatements. In his three games back, the catcher has been engulfed with flames at the plate with 10 hits in 14 plate appearances.

That included a perfect 4-for-4 outing in Thursday night’s regular season finale against Cuba-Rushford, where he helped Wellsville get the ball rolling in a hurry with a two-run home run in the team’s opening at-bats. Green would wind up recording a whopping seven RBI to go with two runs scored to ensure the strongest of conclusions to the regular season with a 12-2 win after six innings over the visiting Rebels.

“Alex really adds something special to our lineup, and because of him we were able to jump out to a 3-0 lead to start off his home run,” said Lions coach Tom Delahunt. “We kind of never looked back after that. We’re starting to develop some confidence at the plate, and in the last few games, we scored at least 12 runs aside from last night’s game with Hornell. We’ve been swinging the bat really well, and that’s big, especially going into Sectionals.”

Wellsville would score three runs in each of the first three innings of play to set the tone almost immediately against Cuba-Rushford, with Green’s homer highlighting an 3-0 early lead after the opening frame. From that point on, the Lions would continue to build large amounts of momentum while keeping the Rebels in check, despite allowing their two lone runs in the top of the third to cut the deficit down to 6-2.

The Lions went on to score the game’s last six runs, including a two-run bottom of the sixth to push them over the top to force an early end to the battle, as they made sure their regular season would end of the highest of notes heading into the second season. In all, the hosts accounted for 12 runs off 14 total hits, with four different batters recording at least a pair at the plate.

Behind Green was the compilation of Gavin Haggerty, Cooper Brockway and Logan Dunbar, all posting two hits. On the mound, Haggerty recorded the win with four strikeouts and three walks before being relieved by another outstanding performance from Trenton Green in relief, as he fanned five more Rebels batters and walked one across his three innings of relief.

For Cuba-Rushford, Braeden Wight and Finn Ricketts each recorded two hits out of the team’s six total to pace the attack. On the hill, Wight provided solid relief behind four strikeouts and four walks.

The regular season is now over for both teams, as the wait for Sectional play now begins with the Lions wrapping up at 9-11 overall, while the Rebels finish at 11-8.

Bolivar-Richburg 15, Andover/Whitesville 0 (F-5)

BOLIVAR — Some strong senior pitching on the mound allowed the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg to set a tone that visiting Andover/Whitesville was unable to match, as the hosts in red and black used the big burst of defensive energy at the plate to jump start a forceful attack to record another 15-0 shutout on Thursday to close out their regular season with their 16th win in the last 18 games.

The Wolverines offense were able to capitalize on eight hits as well as some special teams play around the bases, recording at least a pair of runs across the first four innings, with eight coming in the first two innings to set the tone almost immediately.

Three different hitters recorded at least a pair of hits to pace the offense for Bolivar-Richburg, with Evan Pinney leading the way with a 2-for-4 outing and three RBI. Fillmore would finish off the victory with a massive fourth inning outing, scoring the game’s last 10 runs to force the 10-run rule into effect to capture the victory.

Leading the bats were Zach Sisson and Luke Colombo, both recording three hits. Jude Beardsley chipped in with two of his own. On the mound, Colombo shifted his momentum into his four-inning start, keeping Friendship/Scio at bay along with Aiden Wagner, fanning 10 and walking two as the two hurlers combined to toss a one-hit shutout.

As for Friendship/Scio, Cooper Greenman came away with the offense’s lone hit, while Landon Arnold fanned one and walked four in his three inning start on the rubber.

BOYS TENNIS

Fillmore’s Schilke, Boon & Derck perform at State Qualifiers

BROCKPORT — The Eagles of Fillmore and their three tennis competitors ended their Individual Sectional journey on Thursday right back at Pittsford-Mendon, as Eben Schilke and the doubles team of Joe Derck and Jack Boon fought tooth and nail to earn a spot in the State Tournament against the elites of competition in Section V in the State Qualifier.

Schilke worked his way through a tough field of competition, beginning his day with a tough battle from Caledonia-Mumford’s Lorenzo Martelle, edging his way towards a 10-7 win. The Fillmore junior would then meet Hilton’s Remy McNamara, where he then fell out of contention for a spot in the Individual State Tournament in a 10-0 decision.

As for Boon and Derck, they gave everything they had up against Caledonia-Mumford’s Michael Gere and Max Poray, but ultimately were narrowly edged in a 10-8 decision.

“I’m really proud of the way the guys competed today. Joe and Jack had their chances to advance, but came up just short. Eben played a solid first match, but just struggled to finish points in the second round.” said Eagles coach Randy Crouch.

Undefeated Fillmore will now regroup and prepare for a run as one, as Team Sectional play officially kicks into gear next week.
