Thursday Roundup: Wellsville detonates massive 1st inning to set up 19-0 Senior Night win vs. A-L; Karnuth’s double leapfrogs B-R over Fillmore, C-R softball halts GV/Belfast’s 6-game win streak
WELLSVILLE — It was a matchup that was put on hold not once, but twice this season due to Mother Nature’s rain-filled wrath. But with the weather forecast appearing more than suitable for action once again, there was no more waiting. Only this time, it marked a special night for the Lions of Wellsville against Allegany-Limestone.
Upon entry towards the baseball field, five portraits all lined up the back of the home-side dugout. Along the third baseline in front of the dugout, five numbers etched in spray paint, in sequential order.
It can only mean one thing, and one thing only: Senior Night.
Leading up to the first pitch of the game, the Lions took time out to honor all five of their Seniors — Aiden Cowburn, Ty Vogel, Cam Lyons, Karson Grover and Gavin Haggerty, all of whom had a major hand in delivering the program’s second Section V title in the four seasons, last Spring at Innovation Field in Rochester on a day that will not be forgotten anytime soon in Wellsville baseball lore.
Many laughs were shared in reflection of the players and their fondest memories with the team, and for some family members, the possession of some pretty misty eyes. It truly is one of the more emotional times of the year, with Graduation creeping right around the corner.
Thursday was one of the last times in the Lion’s Den for all five Seniors during the regular season, with one final home game on Monday against Hornell serving that role, as the team heads out to become road warriors for three of their final four games of the campaign following their battle with the visiting Gators.
With the emotion swirling around the Lion’s Den, it was up to the hosts in black and orange to make it a memorable one.
What a night they had.
Although Allegany-Limestone showcased an early burst of pressure right from the get-go, the Lions evaded it with ease. In return, the bats came alive in the most emphatic of ways to pour it on in front of their families, their friends and fans by setting the tone immediately with a 10-run opening stand at the dish, never looking back while having every bit of fun possible in what was a 19-0 shutout victory on a chilly, overcast evening for baseball.
“This matchup rained out twice, but it was finally nice to get this game in with Allegany-Limestone on a much better day. We only have one more game between now and the end, so this was important,” Lions coach Tom Delahunt said. “We celebrated before and after with our seniors with a cookout, and it was a great way to send all five of them out. They have had so many good memories together as a group. Most of them have been here all four years that I’ve been coaching the program. Our trips to Myrtle Beach, winning Sectionals last year, all the good times we’ve had. This has been a great group of kids.”
The Lions (9-3) wasted absolutely no time with a scorching hot pan on the stovetop, firing on all cylinders right away against the Gators with 10 of their 19 total runs stemming across nearly two full trips at the plate, with a Karson Grover two-run single up the middle helping break the ice. The heat began to rise later on after the early advantage was branched out towards a six-pack of runs, as Cam Lyons and Brennen Geffers delivered back-to-back singles to further distance their path ahead of Allegany-Limestone.
After two more runs scored on Vogel’s single to left center field, along with some key special teams work around the bases, Wellsville finished off a resonant opening at-bats with a 10-0 lead on the Gators.
The Lions went back to work through the next two innings, posting five runs in the second and their last four in the bottom of the third before Vogel took care of business himself on the mound to shut the door on a five-inning shutout victory. In all, the team’s senior ace held Allegany-Limestone to just three hits, pounding the strike-zone with nine strikeouts and a pair of walks.
As for the bats, Vogel was also one of four different Lions to post a pair of hits, finishing with his two RBI and two runs scored. Aiden Cowburn also had two hits, driving in four runs and scoring three times. Grover finished with two hits and two RBI, while Andrew Ordiway supplied a 2-for-2 outing that included a triple, RBI and two more runs scored.
With back-to-back dominant performances in the wagon, Wellsville is now set to hit the road for a titanic showdown Saturday afternoon, as they square off with the Medina Mustangs in a Class B Far West Regional rematch. First pitch for the battle between the two Class B champions is slated for a 2 p.m. start up north.

Bolivar-Richburg 3, Fillmore 1
BOLIVAR — Approaching two weeks until the end of the regular season, most teams have now begun to set their sights on the homestretch. After a 5-0 shutout to the hands of defending Class D State Champion Arkport-Canaseraga back on Tuesday, the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg were refocused for another big fight on their hands — Fillmore.
With three straight games to close out the week, there was no better time to pump on the gas and speed towards a strong finish ahead. But the Eagles weren’t going to allow that easily, as they became the first team to strike while the iron was hot. Fillmore held the lead for as long as they could behind the guidance of Damon Potter, but their term in the driver’s seat soon came to an end.
That allowed Bolivar-Richburg to open the door. And with Landon Barkley continuing his control of the rubber, the offense came with it.
Waide Karnuth saved the night.
With the bases loaded at one of the more crucial times in battle, the Bolivar-Richburg senior did not miss, as he unloaded a mammoth drive to the deep outfield where the ball rolled far enough to scratch two go-ahead runs across. After being granted their first lead in the game, the Wolverines collected one more piece of insurance while Barkley kept Fillmore silent until they crossed the finish line, bouncing back with a vengeance to claim a 3-1 home win.
“It was a well-played game on both sides. We knew what to expect with (Damon) Potter against us. Both pitchers were tough all throughout, but we were able to get a little extra to get over the top,” said Wolverines coach Dustin Allen. “We made some great plays to get out of some jams behind Landon. Waide came through clutch with his bases-loaded shot to put us ahead. Tavyn (MacDonell) got on and worked himself around with the big piece of insurance. It was quite fitting for him, because tonight was his last game with us before he undergoes surgery. We got down, but the kids kept battling. It was nice to see us pull it out against a tough Fillmore team.”
The pitcher’s duel was on in full force across the first three innings of play, as both teams converged for just one run — a score belonging to Fillmore in the top of the second off an ice-breaking grounder from Connor McCumiskey. The action would then freeze leading up to the tremendous momentum-shifting fourth inning for the Wolverines (7-4), as Karnuth blasted a bases-loaded ground-rule double straight to the outfield fence and under it.
The play, changing the complexion of the game completely, as he brought two runs in to grant the hosts their first lead of the night.
After another shutout frame from Barkley and the Bolivar-Richburg defense in the top half of the fifth, the Wolverines proceeded to widen the gap even further off some incredible base-running from Tavyn MacDonell, who led off the frame with a single. Using his horsepower around the bases, he remained alert and navigated his way across home on an errant throw down the left field line to score the game’s final run.
It would then rest solely in the hands of Barkley to finish the night out strong, as the senior ace handed out a pair of strikeouts in the seventh inning to put a bow on a 1-2-3 frame and the victory. Barkley went on to claim the complete game win behind four strikeouts and a walk.
The Wolverines came together to produce their three runs off six hits, with Barkley leading the way with two of them. Maddox Davison and Connor Margeson each had a hit to chip in.
For Fillmore (6-4), six different hitters recorded a hit, with Jared Boon, James Hillman, Isaac Wilcox, Jack Boon, Connor McCumiskey and Kalen Beardsley all had one. On the mound, Damon Potter struck out six and walked three in his four innings of work during his start. The Eagles are tentatively back on the field at Houghton University on Saturday, taking on York/Pavilion in a 1 p.m. first pitch.
The Wolverines will look to keep their foot down back on their home field tonight, hosting Oswayo Valley under the lights at 7 p.m.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 20, Cuba-Rushford 7 (F-6)
CUBA — 20 was the magic number once again for Genesee Valley/Belfast on Thursday. After hitting a grand slam in their previous battle against Andover/Whitesville back on Tuesday, Ryan Daciw laid the lumber down once again against the host Rebels of Cuba-Rushford, blasting two doubles and a solo home run to propel the offensive efforts once more in explosive fashion to pace the team’s 20-7 road win.
“GV/Belfast jumped on us early and we struggled to field the ball and throw strikes all night. I thought we battled at the plate and had some solid innings and at-bats. But defensively, we really struggled across the board.” said Rebels coach Pat Wight.
The damage was applied out of the gate by Daciw, who aided Genesee Valley/Belfast (11-1) in a rampant offensive start which included nine straight runs in the first three innings of play, blasting an RBI double in the team’s three-run frame in the first to shatter the scoreless facade with a three-run frame. The lead grew with four more runs, two in each inning before the Rebels came back to trim the deficit to 9-3 off back-to-back RBI singles from Finn Ricketts and Eli Sleggs.
But Daciw’s big bat came back into the play once again from within a four-run fourth frame that ultimately muscled their lead into insurmountable territory, launching a solo home run to deep center field to help the visitors claim a 13-3 lead. Genesee Valley/Belfast went on to score nine of the last 13 runs down the stretch to cruise away towards their 11th victory of the campaign.
The visitors in black assembled their 20 runs off 13 total hits. Leading alongside Daciw was Trent Hutchison, who also posted three hits, driving in three additional runs in the process. Ethan Davenport and Derek Calanni each had two hits. On the mound, Daciw also scored the victory across four innings of work, fanning five and walking four.
Cuba-Rushford (5-5) was led by Finn Ricketts at the plate, as he accounted for four of the team’s seven runs — three of them on a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the fifth inning. He would finish 2-for-4 in the game. Behind him, Landen Schappacher and Eli Sleggs both posted two hits each from within an eight-hit amassment. Gracing the hill was Sleggs, who went into the third inning with his start, fanning four and walking one.
The Rebels are back on the field Saturday afternoon with a 3:30 p.m. visit to Andover/Whitesville, in Andover.
Genesee Valley/Belfast will have a long bus ride ahead of them tonight, as they travel north to visit the Elba Lancers in a 5:30 p.m. first pitch.

Andover/Whitesville 13, Hinsdale 7
ANDOVER — An incendiary offensive inception witnessed the Hinsdale Bobcats gallop out of the starting gates with the opening advantage against Andover/Whitesville on Thursday. With the early lead in their possession, the pressure was on immediately for the hosts to fight their way back into contention right off the bat.
Did they ever.
Through the next four innings, Andover/Whitesville buckled down and locked in at the dish by conducting and capitalizing on all the offense possible, scoring 12 unanswered runs — five of them coming in the bottom of the third that ultimately saw them keep the visiting Bobcats in the rearview mirror once and for all to complete a herculean rebound in Andover with a 13-7 home victory.
“Hinsdale came out on fire and ready to go to start things off. We weren’t ready to play at first, but I was really glad that we straightened it out for the rest of the game ahead,” said Andover/Whitesville co-coach Jake Bannerman. “We needed this game badly. Hopefully, we can take some positives out of it and continue to trend in the right direction heading into a very busy rest of the season.”
Before they could piece together a phenomenal rally early on, Andover/Whitesville (3-5) had to carom back and provide a response of equal or supplementary measure to level the playing grounds. It would begin with their first two runs in the second, and then end with a massive go-ahead four-run frame in the second inning to lay claim to a 6-5 advantage on the Bobcats.
To make sure their victory was sealed in place, the hosts enhanced their first lead of the game with insurmountable insurance, adding five more runs in the bottom of the third inning — two off the bat of Colton Calladine, who had a whale of an outing at the dish by smacking a two-run homer from within a 3-for-4 outing at the dish.
In all, Andover/Whitesville compiled six hits, with Jake Mattison adding one of his own and scoring three runs. On the mound, the win was also granted in Calladine’s favor, as he went four strong frames by handing out six chairs and walking just one.
On the opposite side of the field, the Bobcats (1-9) shelled out their seven runs off 10 hits. On the mound, Tyler Richards struck out two and walked four during his relief appearance on the mound. Hinsdale will look to rebound by hitting the road for a 5 p.m. visit to Mount Morris, this evening.
Andover/Whitesville stands pat on their home confines to welcome in both the Alfred-Almond Eagles and the Cuba-Rushford Rebels for battle on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. in Andover.

SOFTBALL
Bolivar-Richburg 9, Fillmore 4
RICHBURG — There was simply no mistaking the importance of Thursday’s game for the Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg. Hard on the heels of their defeat to the Avoca-Prattsburgh Lady Titans just 24 hours prior, they were in rebound mode against another red hot team, the Fillmore Lady Eagles, right back on Stan Harris Field.
From the very beginning, the two Allegany County rivals traded back and forth barbs, with multiple lead changes coming right alongside of it. The Lady Wolverines registered a big piece of go-ahead damage in the fourth inning, despite the Lady Eagles remaining hot on their trail. But to make sure they stood out in front, they came together for one more entourage of runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull away with a tremendous 9-4 bounce back win.
The consistent scoring between both teams commenced right in the opening frame of play, with Cassidy Stives and her RBI single serving as Bolivar-Richburg’s (5-4) first response to Fillmore’s 1-0 lead. The Lady Wolverines followed up with their first of many go-ahead runs in the back-and-forth chess match at the plate behind Sommer Beckwith’s run on special teams.
Each team posted a pair of runs in the third inning, with the Lady Eagles (9-3) propelling back ahead with a two-run bomb off the bat of Morghyn Ross. But the lead was short-lived after the hosts in white and red came right back with a two-run haymaker of their own, as Danika Saunders pummeled a two-run single to regain the 4-3 lead, ultimately for good.
Bolivar-Richburg maintained full momentum with an RBI single from Rylee Whiting, granting the contest’s largest advantage on either side. Despite an attempt to chip away at the deficit with one more run in the fifth, the Lady Wolverines put the pedal to the metal with a colossal finish — a four-run bottom of the sixth inning, with a pair of RBI from Whiting and Sydney Faulkner pacing the game-ending efforts to seal the victory.
The hosts totaled their nine runs off 11 hits at the plate, as Whiting paced the attack with a 3-for-4 outing and two total RBI. Teegan Sibble also pitched in three hits of her own, while Stives had two. On the mound, Kylee Whiting clinched the victory across all seven innings, fanning 11 and walking six.
For the Lady Eagles, they assembled a four-hit performance — two of them belonging to Mattie McCumiskey. On the hill, Mylee Miller fanned five and walked four in her complete game. Up next on the docket for Fillmore is a 6 p.m. visit to Andover on Monday to take on Andover/Whitesville.
Bolivar-Richburg will look to keep rolling right back on Stan Harris Field this evening, hosting Hornell at 5 p.m.

Cuba-Rushford 10, Genesee Valley/Belfast 1
CUBA — The Genesee Valley/Belfast ladies currently stand as one of the hottest teams entering the homestretch of the regular season, having won eight of their last nine games. The opportunity to continue burning their ongoing fire came Thursday night in their latest trip over the road to visit the Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford.
They started their game off on the right foot, breaking the ice in the opening stages of battle. But soon after, they were met by a brick wall, as the Lady Rebels shut them down completely by scoring the next 10 runs in a row covering the next three innings. Right behind it, two stellar pitching efforts from both Lizzie Kocsis and Emma Bunk kept the door deadbolted, as Cuba-Rushford strolled straight towards a 10-1 win to end Genesee Valley/Belfast’s six-game win streak.
Immediately following Jenna Hill’s door-opening RBI for Genesee Valley/Belfast in the first inning, the Lady Rebels (5-5) went to work right away to quadruple their advantage over their opposition — two runs coming off back-to-back RBI singles from Jordyn Radomski and Lizzie Kocsis, to press on towards a 4-1 lead.
After one complete turn through the lineup, the momentum kept rolling into the second inning with three more runs to keep their lead ahead of Genesee Valley/Belfast (10-3) distanced. The scoring then ceased in the bottom of the third with their final three runs of the game to take a nine-run lead going forward. From the fourth frame on, Kocsis and Bunk held the visitors to just two more hits to finish off a combined four-hit victory.
The win was earned by Kocsis, recording seven strikeouts. Bunk chipped in with two of her own in relief in the seventh inning. At the plate, the Lady Rebels gathered 12 hits to pair with all 10 of their runs, with Bunk, Kate Radomski and Claire Moyer each scoring two hits.
As for the visitors, Hannah Powers posted two of the team’s four hits to lead the attack. Jenna Hill and Madison Yackeren had a hit each to add into the mix. In the circle, Powers struck out four and walked one in her complete game. Genesee Valley/Belfast will host Alfred-Almond at the Rich Sullivan Complex in Belfast, Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
Cuba-Rushford now moves full steam ahead into a return to their home field tonight, as they host the Lady Lions of Wellsville in a 5 p.m. first pitch.

Andover/Whitesville 15, Hinsdale 4
ANDOVER — Despite an early start from Hinsdale out of the gate, Olivia Waters stood her ground from within the circle for host Andover/Whitesville on Thursday. With the offense rolling right behind her, Waters was outstanding from the first pitch until the last, as she handed out 11 strikeouts and issued just one walk to set the bar with her one-hitter against the visiting Lady Bobcats, setting their sights on what was a 15-4 home win in Andover.
The early connection of three crucial errors by the Andover/Whitesville defense allowed the Lady Bobcats to hop aboard first in the opening frame, capitalizing on a pair of runs to break the ice. But the crack on the surface doubled in size courtesy of the host’s response in the bottom half, as they handed in four big runs to propel their way into the driver’s seat.
Andover/Whitesville (4-5) remained in firm control of the battle, adding three more runs to lay claim on a 7-2 advantage. Hinsdale chipped away at their deficit through the next two innings of play, closing the gap down to three in the same swing, but it would be as close as they reached behind the home team.
In their last two outings at the dish, Andover/Whitesville made sure to peel away towards victory resoundingly, as they scored the last eight runs of the night — six of them in the bottom of the sixth to eclipse the double-digit plateau. When it was all said and done, the hosts posted their 15 total runs on 11 hits, with Lilly Harrington’s 3-for-4 outing captaining the efforts. Waters also had three hits, while Avery Hoffman had two.
For Hinsdale (1-11), they accounted for just one hit — a lead-off single from Kaylie Foskit in the top of the first inning, to set up their offense. On the mound, Jen Tuttle struck out seven and walked nine in her complete game. The Lady Bobcats now hit the road for a 5 p.m. clash at Ellicottville tonight.
