Monday Roundup: Howard turns in brilliant performance, Ks 15 in 3-1 Lady Rebels edging of Fillmore; Havens cashes in complete game for Lions, fanning 10 in shutout of C-G/J-T to get back to .500

CUBA — The pitcher’s duel was on, as it morphed into a pure defensive battle being put on full display, Monday night in Cuba. One where runs came at an absolute rarity. But when they did score, were they ever valuable.

With both Fillmore’s Saige Friedl, and Cuba-Rushford’s Sydney Howard providing two of their best games of the season from within the circle, it was down to the offenses and who could one-up the other in the end. After a quick start on both sides of the spectrum, the Lady Rebels made sure it was their first word that made an impact.

Two of their first three runs came in the opening pair of innings the game had to offer, setting up shop for the Lady Rebels offense who saw their deficit come down across the stretch, but a massive piece of insurance in the fifth inning is what done the visiting Lady Eagles in, as Cuba-Rushford shut the door on a potential rally from behind to ensure a 3-1 home victory over Fillmore.

With the Lady Rebels (2-3) grabbing an early 1-2-3 of Fillmore, despite a lead-off double from Torann Wolfer that started their first at-bats, they were the first team to post their lead run on the board, with Riley Keller’s RBI single straight up the gut and into center field kicking it all off, scoring Harlie Jones from second to break the ice.

Through all of the offensive stints, Sydney Howard was simply incredible on the mound for the hosts, holding Fillmore (4-4) at bay to just one run across five hits, dishing out a season-high 15 strikeouts to go with three walks, including multiple innings where all three of the outs were collected with her arm.

While she was reaping the success of defense, she helped provide some offense of her own, scoring off of a hard-hit Destiny Darrin infield single to the left side. After a throw over to first to try for the out, Howard snuck home and scored to branch Cuba-Rushford’s lead to a pair.

The Lady Eagles would find a way to trim down the lead to one in the top of the third however, as Wolfer grabs an RBI on her second hit of the game by blasting a single straight down the right field line, simultaneously trying to keep the momentum alive in Fillmore’s favor.

But that was soon dropped by the Lady Rebels defense, as they came up with a miraculous 2-3-2-5-2 double play off a bunt in front of the plate, resulting in the force out at first and then the inning-ending out between third base and home in the midst of a rundown.

The Lady Eagles put that latest stint at the plate in the rearview mirror, as they bounced back on defense to keep Cuba-Rushford at a standstill in the third, striking out the side. Friedl would finish with nine strikeouts and one walk in a six-hit effort.

Fillmore’s best chance to add some more damage came in the fourth with a pair of runners on, including a bloop single from Friedl to the shallow outfield in right. But Howard would not crumble to the pressure, as she recorded all three outs at the plate with her arm, sending the Lady Rebels back to the plate.

Both teams would come up empty in the fourth inning, led by a highlight-reel diving catch from Preslee Miller at third to end the frame, but insurance would come into play later in the fifth provided by Elysa Tylor, who singled into the outfield to score a run and pushed the Lady Rebels advantage to a pair — more than enough room to seal the victory in the end.

The Lady Rebels totaled three runs on six hits in all, with Jones heading the front with a pair of hits. On the flip side, the Lady Eagles collected one run off five total hits, with Wolfer’s 2-for-3 outing in the box charging the way.

Both teams will mark their return to the field in the upcoming days, if weather permits, as Cuba-Rushford prepares to welcome in Andover/Whitesville for a 5 p.m. visit on Wednesday, while Fillmore travels to Friendship to take on host Friendship/Scio in a 5 p.m. first pitch of their own, beginning on Thursday.

Wellsville 3, Otto-Eldred 1

WELLSVILLE — Along with overwhelming showings of offense, and defense, there’s one last thing the Lady Lions of Wellsville have yet to encounter during the season — special teams. In this case, a game of small ball that could potentially determine a make-or-break situation for a team.

Three scoreless innings between them and visiting Otto-Eldred went by in a flash. In order to weave their way through the defense and onto the board, the Lady Lions had to think fast.

One word: Squeeze.

Beginning in the fourth inning and ending in the next, Wellsville capitalized on some incredibly smart small ball against the Lady Terrors, with Marissa Ordway and Emma Dunaway provided two separate squeeze bunts at the plate with the scoring run feet away at third, successfully implanting the hits into the dirt to score a pair of enormous runs to grab the lead they wanted on Otto-Eldred to hang onto, en route to a 3-1 edging on Monday at Tullar Field.

After a big hit against the overpowering winds that nearly exited play by Makenna Dunbar towards the beginning of the game, the realization for New York State’s fourth-ranked Class B school to enter Plan B in favor of small ball soon came after, according to head coach Matt Burke.

“Makenna put a really good swing on a pitch in the second, and I thought it was going to leave the park. But the wind definitely played a factor,” he said. “She doubled on the hit, and from that point on, we realized that we needed to play some small ball if we wanted to get some runs across the plate.”

So they did.

Beginning in the fourth inning, the Lady Lions (11-2) went to their bunts after Emma Dunaway led off the inning with reaching base. After being moved over on a sacrifice, and a single from Makenzie Cowburn, Marissa Ordway provided the first of the the bunts to help break the ice against Otto-Eldred, laying a beautifully-placed bunt down in the dirt to allow Dunaway to score.

In the fifth — the same story later on, as Marley Adams provided an RBI single to branch Wellsville’s lead out to a pair, scoring Sawyer Burke along the way, who led off the frame with a single. After moving her way into scoring position, the Lady Lions capitalized on another bunt, this time from Dunaway, who squeezed her in to score, giving the team the room they needed in the end to pick up the victory over Otto-Eldred.

While the offense was playing special teams, Cowburn dueled alongside Otto-Eldred’s Bri Heller all game long, each eclipsing the 10-strikeout mark along the way. The Lady Lions accounted for just five hits at the plate, while Cowburn allowed only two in her 16-strikeout performance, one-walk to pick up the win for the hosts in orange.

“Makenzie was electric tonight, and she was dominant hitting her spots and changing speeds,” Burke said. “It’s nice to be able to do some little things to score runs. With the pitching and defense that we have, it gives us a chance to be really successful.”

Wellsville will return to the field on Friday with a 5 p.m. first pitch against the Lady Mustangs of Dansville over the road.

Bolivar-Richburg 5, Genesee Valley/Belfast 2

RICHBURG — Having that early start can prove to provide a big benefit for a team. For the Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg, they made sure they were the first to start their engines, plating four of the five runs in the first three innings of play despite some pressure down the stretch from Genesee Valley/Belfast, as they squeezed out a 5-2 home win on Monday to record their fifth straight win.

The Lady Wolverines (5-0) struck while the iron was hot right from the start, with four of their five runs being scored in the opening half of the contest. Two of those runs came during the team’s first at-bats, with Madigan Harris keeping their tenure at the plate alive with a big two-out double. On the next at-bat, Maddy Thornton drove her home on an absolute blast — a two-run jack to break the ice.

More power came from Jessica Majot to begin the second, as she fired off a home run of her own, leading off the frame with a solo shot that left the field in a hurry to branch Bolivar-Richburg’s lead to three before some key baserunning paid dividends in the third, resulting in their fourth run.

The deficit would navigate its way towards being cut in half by Genesee Valley/Belfast (1-5) however, as they tallied their two lone runs in the fourth and fifth innings, led by an RBI single off the bat of Jenna Hall to end the potential shutout bid by the Lady Wolverines.

After the lead for the hosts was shortened to 4-2, a big piece of insurance came in the fifth from Thornton, who added to her explosive day on offense with an RBI double. A hit that sealed the game for good for the Lady Wolverines, en route to a 5-0 start on the season.

Thornton went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Bolivar-Richburg bats, driving in three RBI total. Madigan Harris added in two hits of her own and scored twice, while Haley Mascho and Malayna Ayers each had a hit to chip in. Within the circle, McKinlee Harris picked up the four-hit victory behind five strikeouts.

On the flip side for Genesee Valley/Belfast, Hill, Brooke Middaugh, Raygen Haggstrom and Ashley Burrows all recorded a single each to charge the offense. In the circle, Hannah Southwick-Powers struck out six Bolivar-Richburg batters across her complete game effort.

In the upcoming days, both teams will return to the field, if weather permits, with Bolivar-Richburg jumping back onto their home field to host a massive Allegany County showdown with undefeated Friendship/Scio in town for a visit at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, while Genesee Valley/Belfast heads back home to Belfast to host Arkport/Canaseraga in a 5 p.m. contest tonight.

Andover/Whitesville 16, Canisteo-Greenwood/Jasper-Troupsburg 3

JASPER — Olivia Waters and Kennedy Bledsoe assisted Andover/Whitesville in a fiery start to their game on Monday, supplying a pair of RBI each to fit inside a nine-run opening session that saw them earn a lead that was never given up, as they steamrolled their way towards triumph over the road in Jasper with a 16-3 victory.

Waters and Bledsoe started the Andover/Whitesville (3-2) offense off hot, with Waters garnering a two-run double to help break the ice, while Bledsoe provided two more RBI of her own later on in the inning to help seal up the offensive attack in their opening at-bats.

After a series of runs saw the visitors branch out their lead, their tenure at the plate closed up with a three-run seventh inning, led by a lead off double from Rachel Jackson. Further damage was provided by Ava Grice, who supplied two of those three runs off a single to finish off an outstanding game of offense to begin the fresh new week.

Andover/Whitesville accounted for 16 runs off 12 total hits, with three different hitters recording at least a pair of knocks along the way. Among them, Zoey Lee, who went 2-for-4 and scored four runs. Gabbi Hall and Aislinn Hamilton each recorded two hits of their own, with Hamilton scoring two additional runs.

The team will now hit the road on Wednesday, if weather permits, as they visit Cuba-Rushford in a 5 p.m. first pitch.

BASEBALL

Fillmore 2, Cuba-Rushford 0

CUBA — Sometimes in the game of baseball, you can find yourself in the midst of a dead heat. More specifically on the defensive side on the game — a position that both Fillmore and host Cuba-Rushford found themselves in to begin the new week of action on Monday.

Zach Sisson and Jon White were dealing haymakers all throughout the game, from start to finish. While the stellar defensive showing was being put on full display, it would come down to who would deliver the first strike. Fortunately for one team, that came right in the early stages.

Luke Colombo was responsible for conducting the majority of the Eagles offense, as the junior drove in both of the team’s runs beginning in the second, giving them the run they needed to break the ice before adding in insurance down the homestretch to secure what was a 2-0 shutout of the Rebels to collect their sixth win in the first seven games.

“Both pitchers were incredible tonight. They were in total control of the zone,” Rebels coach Pat Wight said. “It was your typical, old-fashioned pitcher’s duel. We had some opportunities to score a couple of runs late in the game, but their defense made the plays they needed to behind their pitcher. Defensively, we’re starting to find a groove ourselves after an error-less game.”

Both of Colombo’s RBIs saw Brent Zubikowski come in an score, with the first coming in the top of the second. Soon after, the defenses began to battle back and forth once more before Fillmore (6-1) found another big opportunity to add some insurance in the top of the fifth, as Colombo drove in Zubikowski on a hard shot straight to third base. A throw home from Finn Ricketts was applied in effort to catch him, but was not in time to prevent the insurance from coming across.

The lead for Fillmore was extended by a pair, making Cuba-Rushford’s (3-5) hole a little larger to climb out of, coming down the homestretch. But in the sixth, the Rebels were given an opportunity to provide their best strike against the Eagles with a pair of runners reaching. But behind an outstanding effort by Zach Sisson and the defense behind him, the visitors in green and black were able to escape with two big outs, ultimately shutting down the host’s offense for good to secure the shutout.

Sisson collected a four-hit shutout for the Eagles to earn the victory, fanning six. As a team, Fillmore collected five hits with Zubikowski adding one along the way.

On the other side, White provided just as dominant of a performance as Sisson did on the mound for the Rebels, as he handed out 11 chairs and walked just three in his combined five-hitter alongside Benson McCumiskey. At the plate, Logan Lewis recorded two of the team’s four hits, while Finn Ricketts posted a double.

If weather permits, both teams are back in action in the upcoming days, with Cuba-Rushford looking to rebound back home on Wednesday in a 5 p.m. battle against Andover/Whitesville, while Fillmore looks to keep the momentum rolling into Franklinville tonight in a 5 p.m. first pitch of their own.

Wellsville 9, Canisteo-Greenwood/Jasper-Troupsburg 0

CANISTEO — After ending the week falling to the hands of Bolivar-Richburg in a 9-0 shutout at home, the Lions of Wellsville took their talents out on the road in hopes of starting the new week with a rebound with a visit to Canisteo-Greenwood/Jasper-Troupsburg.

The goal was to pick up where they left off after being halted by the blockade the Wolverines provided this past weekend, beginning with an offense that has been striking all chords on the highest level as of late. On Monday, the Lions returned to form with an excellent showing at the plate.

As an added bonus, Jere Havens was ready to deliver on defense.

The Lions hurler was connecting with all facets of his game on the rubber, as he held Canisteo-Greenwood/Jasper-Troupsburg to five hits, going the complete distance behind 10 chairs handed out while the offense in turn, took care of business, as they rolled their way towards rebounding victory in the form of a 9-0 shutout.

“Jere was masterful tonight. He was very efficient, and we talked about our pitchers needing to become more efficient,” said Lions coach Tom Delahunt. “He was around the plate, and he had 10 strikeouts, but he didn’t try to strike anyone out. He let the defense work behind him. He was a true pitcher tonight. When we put the ball in play, we can force the action. Hopefully when you do that, you have runners on base. We had a lot of them on, and when you force the other team, good things are going to happen.”

While Havens was in complete command of his own destiny on the hill, the Lions (4-4) backed him up on offense by starting out of the gate hot with the lead before adding onto it with a two-run third. The bats would cool off for the next two innings before the team put together their best outing of the game — a five-run sixth inning that ultimately saw them pull away for good, led by a pair of RBI hits from Havens, and Cody Costello.

In addition to his pitching, Havens was also one of three Wellsville hitters that recorded a pair of hits, going 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Alex Green added in two runs, driving in a pair and scoring two himself, while Ty Vogel recorded a pair of hits and an RBI. Costello would score three runs.

Wellsville is right back on the field today back home, as they host a 5 p.m. first pitch against Arkport/Canaseraga.

Bolivar-Richburg 11, Genesee Valley/Belfast 1 (F-5)

BOLIVAR — The name of the game was starting fast for the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg, as they scored seven unanswered runs right out of the gate, five of them coming in the second inning alone to jumpstart what was an 11-1 home victory over visiting Genesee Valley/Belfast on Monday in five innings.

The Wolverines (8-0) wasted no time during their first at-bats to make their presence known on offense, as Wyatt Karnuth started with a huge bang in the form of a two-run triple, giving the team a quick 2-0 lead to control going forward. Five more runs would come across in the second inning, allowing their lead to be pushed out to seven before Genesee Valley/Belfast found their way onto the board in the third with their lone run.

But Bolivar-Richburg went straight to work one more time in the bottom half to continue pushing their advantage even further, ultimately ending the game with one final run in the bottom of the fifth inning to secure the victory. To go with his two-run triple, Karnuth would also tally the marker on the mound for the Wolverines, fanning six and walking three.

At the plate, Landon Danaher recorded a pair of hits and drove in four runs to lead the bats. Cam MacDonell drove in two runs off a double, while Sawyer Johnson posted an RBI.

For Genesee Valley/Belfast (1-6), Matt Weaver accounted for all of the team’s offense, scoring both hits including a triple, and also scored the lone run in the third inning. On the mound, he added a strikeout and walk in relief.

Both teams will make their return to the field Wednesday in a pair of 5 p.m. first pitches, if weather cooperates, as Bolivar-Richburg goes for their ninth straight win back on the road against Friendship/Scio in Friendship, while Genesee Valley/Belfast welcomes in Hinsdale for a visit to Belmont.

FRIENDSHIP — All host Friendship/Scio needed to succeed was a fast start. Through the first three innings, they went on to record an early 10-2 lead on visiting Hinsdale, and they would never look back from it, ultimately coasting towards victory after five innings by recording the 27-4 win at Wellman Field in Friendship over the Bobcats.

The Friendship/Scio (2-4) offense recorded 27 runs off 13 total hits on offense, with Jacob Golden leading the way on offense with a perfect 3-for-3 outing at the plate, scoring four runs. Kody Marvin drove in three runs off his additional knock for the hosts, who recorded one final massive stand in the fourth, scratching across their final 17 runs to close out the game.

On the hill, Joey Bednez earned the win with three strikeouts and four walks. In relief, Ethan Davenport struck out three additional Hinsdale batters along with a walk to close out the fifth and final inning.

Both teams are back on the field Wednesday night with 5 p.m. first pitches, if weather permits, as Friendship/Scio jumps right back onto Wellman Field to host Bolivar-Richburg while Hinsdale heads out to visit Genesee Valley/Belfast, in Belmont.

GOLF

Fillmore 31.5, Bolivar-Richburg 23.5

BOLIVAR — It was a close battle between both Fillmore’s Reid Cockle and Bolivar-Richburg’s Maddox Day right down to the end on Monday. But after it was all said and done, it was Cockle that came out as the medalist shooter on a balanced scorecard for the Eagles, digging their way towards victory by a 31.5-23.5 count over the Wolverines at the Bolivar Golf Club.

Cockle helped lead Fillmore (3-0) towards their third straight win to start the season on the links, as he recorded medalist round honors with a match-low score of 50. Haley Hall trailed behind closely, as she pitched in a round of 54. Following was Anderson Wiltsey, who had a 61. Genesee Valley/Belfast 32, Cuba-Rushford 23

RUSHFORD — With the severe weather beginning to hone in on Allegany Hills, both Genesee Valley/Belfast and host Cuba-Rushford halved their Monday afternoon match to just five holes, in hopes of beating it out. In the end, Will Guilford was the top shooter between both teams, as the Genesee Valley/Belfast golfer came away as the medalist to help earn the visitors a 32-23 road win over the Rebels.

Guilford claimed the top spot on the leaderboard for Genesee Valley/Belfast (1-2), as he recorded the match-low round of 28 to earn his medal. Chris Weaver followed suit with a round of 32. Dakota Hemphill chipped in with a 34, while Addy Herring and Jack Stout finished off the JagDogs scorecard with rounds of 35, and 40 each.

HOUGHTON — The Eagles of Fillmore continue to stay at the top of their game on the tennis court, as the dynamic singles trio of Carter Sisson, Eben Schilke and Isaiah Sisson provided dominant showings to propel the team towards a 5-0 sweeping shutout of visiting Bolivar-Richburg on Monday at their home confines of Houghton College.

“Carter, Eben and Isaiah were all locked in today. They continue to be our strength,” said Eagles coach Randy Crouch. “We have been focusing on improving our doubles play, and showed some growth today. We need to keep working to find the right doubles combinations, and find a rhythm if we want to reach our goals.”
