All-State Girls Hoops: Hall, Roeske, Wahl among seven Allegany County basketballers to receive nominations for State Teams

ALBANY — A few weeks ago, honors were handed out to a select few in the boys basketball part of the high school sports world with All-State Team selections from the New York State Sportswriters Association (NYSSWA). On Wednesday, the awards wrapped up with another set of All-Team selections, this time for the girls basketball division.

When the selection process was all said and done, seven Allegany County hoopsters received nods. Leading the way at the top of the honors list was Whitesville freshman Vanessa Hall. Hall received a fifth team nod in Class D in New York State, leading the charge on all fronts for the Lady Jays within their Class D2 Semifinal, 16-7 campaign under first-year head coach Aaron Rawady. The team garnered a Division II championship in League play, which led to a County scoring title in girls basketball averaging nearly 22 points per game for Hall.

Further down the list were two more Allegany County starlets in Andover’s Emily Wahl, and Fillmore’s Hannah Roeske, as they both earned seventh team nominations for their efforts on their respective teams. For Wahl, she headed a Lady Panthers attack under fifth-year head coach Jake Bannerman that made their way back to the Class D2 Finals for the third time in four years, ultimately falling short of now four-time champion Elba this past March.

Wahl finished fourth overall in the County in scoring, averaging 17 points per game for Andover inside their 17-7 campaign.

Roeske, who played another key role in Fillmore’s return back to the Class D1 Finals, added another accolade to her list. Along with being a 1,000 point scorer in her career at the very end of this season, she will also add a seventh team nomination in Class D for the Lady Eagles under longtime head coach Tom Parks. The Lady Eagles made their way back to the Class D1 Finals once again as the tournament’s top seed, but could not pull off the back-to-back repeat over eventual champion Pavilion in this year’s Finals back in March.

Roeske finished her career averaging nearly 16 points per game, sixth best in the County for a Fillmore team that finished 20-3 overall.

Also joining the group in Class D were Roeske’s fellow teammate Emma Cole, and Hinsdale’s Kaitlynn Roberson, who both earned Honorable Mentions from the Sportswriters Association.

Sitting above Class D, is Class C where the last two nominations remain. Among them, is perhaps one of the greatest to ever play basketball in Cuba-Rushford’s history, in Kate Howe. The Lady Rebels senior finished behind Hall in scoring with 19.5 points per game in the team’s 8-11 season under first-year head coach Aaron Wight. Her efforts this past season allowed her to earn an 11th team nomination to go with her all-time scoring record for the Lady Rebels basketball program.

Howe is joined by Bolivar-Richburg’s Aliyah Cole, who earned an Honorable Mention after concluding with an average of just over 17 points per game, third most in Allegany County, for the Lady Wolverines in their 11-10 campaign under third-year head coach Justin Thomas.
