Saturday Roundup: Hornell builds big 1st quarter run, sets tone to provide season sweep of Lions; Fri/Scio girls rebound with 40-16 home win over Lima Christian
HORNELL — In their last meeting in the Lion’s Den, the game was decided down the homestretch when a back-and-forth pursuit between both Hornell and Wellsville ended with the Red Raiders hanging on for dear life to capture the first of two contests in their favor, eight days ago.
Despite the 68-64 defeat to the hands of the Red Raiders, the Lions remained hopeful to get that game back. But they would have to go over the road to the Seneca Street Zoo to do so.
Through the beginning stages, hopes remained high after Wellsville started the first quarter on the right note, looking to carry to lead forward with them. But it was not long after that Hornell began to gain some ground.
And fast.
After a 6-2 lead was built, the Red Raiders would sprint off fast and furiously, as they went on to score a massive run across the last five minutes of the frame to pull ahead, taking away a lead that Wellsville would never get back, securing the 55-46 home win to provide the season sweep of the Lions, Saturday night.
The first quarter was ultimately the deciding factor for the Red Raiders, as they overcame a jaunt that saw Wellsville (6-6) score six of the first eight points from within the first three minutes removed off the clock. In turn, the hosts in white and red countered with the biggest run of them all — a 16-2 outscoring across nearly five minutes to take all the momentum away.
In the second, more of the same for Hornell, as they started the new frame of action with seven of the first nine points just past halfway to branch their lead out. That lead would grow to as much as 14 at one point during the second half, which would allow the Red Raiders to ultimately pull away for good, sealing the win behind some big shots at the line down the homestretch.
Despite the defeat, the Lions saw Logan Dunbar propel the offense with one of his biggest games of the season, netting a game-high 22 points. Cody Costello chipped in 15 points of his own, while Cooper Brockway had seven to add.
Wellsville hits the road once again Tuesday night, as they now begin preparations for a 7 p.m. trek to Bath-Haverling.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Friendship/Scio 40, Lima Christian 16
FRIENDSHIP — After going over the road to Fillmore and falling to the hands of the unbeaten Lady Eagles, Friendship/Scio looked for a bounce back game to build from just two days later back home.
On Saturday, they would go on and do just that. After an 8-2 lead through the opening quarter, Friendship/Scio went wild in the second quarter, providing their biggest run of the game to pull away from visiting Lima Christian permanently to come away victorious in a 40-16 triumph.
“It was a nice team win, especially bouncing back from Fillmore a couple days ago.” said Friendship/Scio coach Ashleigh Lewis. “There was a lot of spread out scoring, and some of the JV kids got some great minutes. Everyone else got some decent playing time as well.”
The x-factor for Friendship/Scio’s (4-6) success came in the second quarter after building their original six-point lead over Lima Christian, as their offense connected on all fronts to hold the Lady Saints down with an 18-2 run to close out the first half on perhaps their strongest note of the afternoon.
It was a balanced effort across the board for Friendship/Scio, one that saw Nevaeh Loss take charge at the front with a game-high 10 points. Kadence Donohue added in eight points of her own, while Jenn Dickens had six. Off the boards, Sophie Bolzan led the team with 11 rebounds.
Friendship/Scio is back on their home floor Monday night with a 7 p.m. tip-off slated against Mount Morris, in Friendship.
