Tuesday Roundup: Rapid 1st quarter start, three-point game fuels Addison’s massive night in 64-32 win over And/Whi; Lady Rebels coast past Fri/Scio with scoreless 2nd quarter run

ANDOVER — A blazing trail of offense was left up and down the court by the Addison Knights over the road on Tuesday. In their first game since their home Christmas Tournament last week, they would take advantage of almost everything they saw in front of them.

A three-point game, multiple turnovers garnered on defense, rebounding off the glass, the Knights were there each time, as they used all of those components to mix together a massive first quarter run that set the pace ultimately for the remainder of the night against Andover/Whitesville, building a double digit lead they never looked back from to win by a 64-32 count.

Addison’s impact was felt almost immediately after the opening tip, after they exchanged back and forth baskets alongside Andover/Whitesville (3-6) to begin the early stages of the contest. With a 9-7 lead in hand for the hosts, the Knights ran off, finishing the opening quarter with a big 15-2 run that saw 10 of those points being scored in a row to break open the floodgates.

The Knights added more to their lead in the second quarter, extending their lead to 17 before insurmountably pulling away with a 17-3 run in the third quarter to seal the victory.

Leading the offense for Andover/Whitesville was CJ Estep, who tallied a team-high 11 points. Brody Carlin added in six points, while Luke Erdmann and Kohler Niedermaier each had four points.

Andover/Whitesville will look to rebound over the road Friday night with a 6 p.m. visit in store against Hinsdale.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Cuba-Rushford 49, Friendship/Scio 30

FRIENDSHIP — After a first quarter fight to begin the night, a tone was set right before the end of the first half. That was done by the Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford, as they forced everything over to their side in the second quarter while holding host Friendship/Scio scoreless to pull away toward a 49-30 road win, Tuesday night in their first game back from vacation.

“We had a really good first half defensively,” said Lady Rebels coach Aaron Wight. “Then the third quarter came, and our offense started to kick in. It’s always a tough task to come back after two weeks off because of the holidays, but I was really happy with how the girls came back to put this game together tonight.”

Before breaking loose from Friendship/Scio’s grasp, the Lady Rebels (4-4) had to weave their way through a back-and-forth start in the opening eight minutes. After establishing a three-point lead, the visitors in blue and white began to capitalize on defense, forcing the ball over with multiple turnovers to account for their scoreless 11-0 run in the second quarter to push their lead at the break.

In the third quarter, the offense helped the cause behind Taylor Searle’s leadership, scoring 18 of her game-high 24 points in the last 16 minutes of the night. Her efforts would help the Lady Rebels jumpstart a 22-10 run which ultimately saw them stroll away toward victory for good.

Finishing behind Searle was Brynn Lavery, who recorded 11 points of her own. Cloey Larabee, Gabby Kranock and Aleah Demick all had four points to add in while Destiny Darrin had a two-pointer to round off Cuba-Rushford.

Nevaeh Ross led Friendship/Scio (2-5) with a team-high 16 points. Kadence Donohue added in 13 points of her own to pair with seven boards. On special teams, Keely Sisson led the rebounding department with nine.

Both teams will have a pair of home games coming up toward the end of the week, with Cuba-Rushford heading back home to host Andover/Whitesville in a 7:30 p.m. battle on Thursday, while Friendship/Scio hosts Lima Christian back in Friendship on Friday, beginning in a 6 p.m. tip-off of their own.

After three more wins in a row from the Redskins, Caden Allen would help the visitors net four wins in the last five matches with a 9-1 major decision triumph at 172 pounds.
