Thursday Roundup: Ordway, Stuck, Cowburn all homer to aid Lady Lions in big momentum builder with 18-3 win at Hornell; Wellsville, Fillmore, GV/Belfast golf victorious in the rain
HORNELL — With the arrival of Section V superpower Webster Schroeder waiting on the other side of their Thursday night road trip to Hornell, the Lady Lions of Wellsville were on the hunt for an even bigger burst of momentum to carry into Friday’s Senior Night showdown of the titans at Tullar Field.
In their second and final visit to the Lady Red Raiders, they would go on to do just that without a single instance of hesitation, posting 12 of their 18 total runs right from within the first three innings of action to make their presence known, as they rode the cruise control all the way towards an 18-3 victory in the Maple City.
“We’ve been preaching this entire time to start fast and play with the lead,” said Lady Lions co-coach Shelley Chaffee. “We got comfortable in the box and adjusted to what the pitchers were throwing. If they had to make any adjustments, they did, and all the hits were solid. Yesterday, we had a shortstop that took away most of our plays, and the (Jordyn) Dyring girl for them in the same position did that again to us tonight too. This is also the first time Marissa pitched this season and she did great, so it was nice to see that while giving Makenzie (Cowburn) and Makenna (Dunbar) a little breather before the weekend.”
The Lady Lions (13-1) offense was a five-alarm fire at the plate, as they posted all 18 runs off 21 massive hits — three of them being home runs, as Marissa Ordway first made lift off in the top of the fourth inning with a two-run bomb before Makenzie Cowburn and Lindsay Stuck each went back-to-back with solo homers in the top of the seventh to put an exclamation point on the contest.
Cowburn led the bats with three of them, going 3-for-4 with a double to go with her home run. Stuck and Ordway each scavenged a pair of hits, while Natalie Adams and Averee Palmatier each added a double into the mix. In the circle, the win was Ordway’s to claim, as she went the distance with eight strikeouts and a pair of walks.
For Hornell, Kaidence Gollnitz led the bats with two of the team’s eight hits, including a double. On the mound, Raegan Evingham went all seven innings behind a strikeout and five walks.
Wellsville is right back to it tonight, weather permitting, as they return home to historic Tullar Field to welcome in the Webster Schroeder Lady Warriors for Senior Night beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 20, Andover/Whitesville 0 (F-5)
WHITESVILLE — Hannah Southwick-Powers simply would not be denied on the mound, Thursday night. The Genesee Valley/Belfast junior was invincible all game long from within her command center, as she held host Andover/Whitesville to just two hits across a divine and dominant 13-strikeout performance to get her team back into the win column with a 20-0 shutout in Whitesville.
While Southwick-Powers maintained her presence on the mound, the momentum she would build for the defense would shift to their offense at the plate, as they assembled a 20-run outburst off 13 total hits. After breaking the ice with a 1-0 lead through the opening frame, Genesee Valley/Belfast (10-5) advanced forward and broke the floodgates down completely with a cantankerous seven-run inning to cushion their lead in insurmountable fashion.
Genesee Valley/Belfast’s leading lady in the center of the infield would also lead the way on offense, as Southwick-Powers collected a 3-for-4 outing that saw her record two doubles and score four runs. Madison Tarar had three hits of her own to add, including a triple and double, while Jenna Hill chipped in with two hits of her own — one of them, a two-run single from within their breakout second inning.
Andover/Whitesville (3-10) was led by an outing of relief in the circle from Lilly Harrington, as she finished the last three innings of action with seven strikeouts and eight walks. At the plate, Reece Winters and Brynna Gaylord each tallied a hit. The team returns to action tonight with a 5 p.m. road trip to Alfred-Almond.

BASEBALL
Cuba-Rushford 17, Hinsdale 7 (F-5)
CUBA — It was not easy by any means for the Rebels of Cuba-Rushford on Thursday. Their opponent on the opposite side of the diamond, the Bobcats of Hinsdale, came out swinging for the fences right away by garnering a big four-run stand that would loom large in claiming their first advantage over the hosts in gray and blue.
But behind a gutty and resilient start on the mound from Finn Ricketts, the Rebels were able to grab the momentum shift they wanted to erase Hinsdale’s lead from that point on, going all in to flip the script completely and assume control of what was ultimately a 17-7 victory to springboard back above .500 on the campaign.
“Finn didn’t have his best stuff today, but he battled through it and came out with a nice performance,” said Rebels coach Pat Wight. “Hinsdale didn’t make it easy on him by any means. They put the bat on the ball and some solid at bats, and we were fortunate enough to be patient with our at bats and come up with some big hits in the fourth. Kadin Pierce came up with the bases loaded and smoked a shot into the left center field gap to really give us a cushion. The next couple guys worked their way on and Tanner Lewis came up with another double to put the lead to 10. We were fortunate to not give any up in the fifth and get out of there with a nice win.”
The Rebels (8-7) began a fiery offensive exhibition at the dish between both teams, as they used some early base-running and a big two-run single off the bat of Adam Roe to break the ice right away against Hinsdale with a 3-0 lead. Immediately following the game-commencing stanza, the Bobcats responded by way of a four-run cementation themselves, using a mastodonic three-run triple off the bat of Henry Schwartz to help give them the lead.
But the recovery by Cuba-Rushford after the big smack by Hinsdale was even larger, as they went on to freeze the Bobcats in their tracks with a seven-run bottom of the second inning to claim a 10-4 lead that was threatened, but never lost from that point onward, as the Rebels went on to score seven of the game’s last eight runs to force the 10-run rule into effect — five of those off two colossal fourth inning hits by Kadin Pierce (three-run double) and Tanner Lewis (two-run double).
In addition to placing runners on behind 13 walks and four errors by the visitors, the Rebels scavenged eight hits on offense, with Hayden Schappacher going 2-for-3 with two RBI. On the mound, Ricketts went all five innings with nine strikeouts and three walks.
Hinsdale (3-8) was led by both Schwartz and Peyton Keller, each recording a pair of hits from within their eight-hit dispersing. The Bobcats will return to action on Monday with a 5 p.m. visit from Bolivar-Richburg.
Coming up this weekend, the Rebels will look to build off the victory over the road, as they pay an 11 a.m. visit to Portville on Saturday.
Hinsdale 042 10 – 7 8 4
Cuba-Rushford 371 6X – 17 8 1
HIN – Robert Childs (LP) (CG, K, 13BB) and Peyton Keller.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 200, Cuba-Rushford 215
WELLSVILLE — On the west side of the Wellsville Country Club and with the rain making a late appearance Thursday afternoon, host Genesee Valley/Belfast and Cuba-Rushford fought through it all to deliver a close quarters performance across the board. When the final scores were tallied, Genesee Valley/Belfast came away victorious behind the guidance of Will Guilford once more, as they edged out the Rebels by a 200-215 count.
Guilford navigated his path to the top of the overall leaderboard at the end of the match for Genesee Valley/Belfast (11-1), as he assembled another dynamic round of golf behind his team-low round of 47. Grant Preston and Chris Weaver both followed behind with a round of 49 each, while Dakota Hemphill rounded out with his round of 55.
