Thursday Roundup: Lions rebound after tough 2nd set defeat to Wolverines, record final two wins to earn 4-set triumph; Fillmore girls win 6th straight, B-R grapplers pick up big win over Portville

WELLSVILLE — Excitement was in the air on Thursday for the final battle between Bolivar-Richburg and Wellsville in the regular season. In the early stages of the fight, both teams followed each other in their footsteps in a feature that saw the Wolverines claw back after a pair of deficits in the first two sets to give the Lions a fierce battle.

As a result, a set was awarded to each side, including a marathon second set that was scored by the Wolverines after a brilliant comeback down the homestretch.

But although the hosts in white and orange were set back because of it, it wouldn’t stop them from providing a big bounce back themselves later on, as they made sure the last two sets were obtained in their possession to record the four-set, 25-23, 26-28, 25-17, 25-17 victory — their third in a row, at the end of the night.

“They played really well tonight. We made a few errors in the second set, which allowed them to come back from that, but their attitude tonight helped keep themselves calm and be able to think on their feet,” Lions coach Adam Kellogg said. “We rallied back to take the last two sets away, and we kept the pressure on Bolivar-Richburg and didn’t let up. We are playing well as a team and we’ve started to trust each other to be there covering for one another.”

The first set saw the Lions (6-4) take control almost immediately after the opening serve, as they posted an early, big run of Bolivar-Richburg by an 11-4 count to set up shop. But with the help of Jaeger Turybury and his service, the Wolverines were able to dish out seven consecutive points to create even playing ground once more with an 11-11 tie.

The set would shift in between the teams from that point until the end, with the Wolverines (6-4) holding a narrow portion of momentum after a pair of big kills allowed them to squeeze ahead. On the other side of the net, the Lions were hot on their trail to make sure they were the team that ended with the upper hand in the end, claiming the two-point decision for the match’s first lead.

A similar start opened up the second frame, one where the Wolverines had to dig their way back in after some early miscues plagued the Lions. The hosts would begin to garner some room down the stretch however, as Wellsville gained an upper hand by as much as five at one point, but it could not be held.

As a result, Bolivar-Richburg would force the second set into extra serves. With the service of Ryder Easton, he would help his team in black and red score six of the next 10 points to tie the game at 24 before finding a way to re-open it back up one more time with the last two points they needed to claim a 28-26 marathon thriller.

Despite their efforts to tie up the match, the Lions would find a way to rebound after the tough defeat, as they came up with two strong finishes in the third and fourth sets to claim victory — a 25-17 decision in each of them to close it out.

Wellsville was led by Xavier Scott, who posted a team-high 11 kills to pair with five aces, two digs, two assists and a block. Riley Graves was not far behind, compiling nine more kills on offense to couple with two aces and a block, while setter Gavan Dickerson handed out 12 assists to help set everything up, adding in five digs, three aces and two blocks in the process.

Stats for Bolivar-Richburg were not made available to report upon publication. The Wolverines are now off until Tuesday night back on the road, visiting Fillmore for a 6 p.m. contest.

Wellsville will look for their fourth straight win when they return to action on Wednesday back on their home floor, hosting the red hot Rebels of Cuba-Rushford in a 6 p.m. first serve of their own.

Cuba-Rushford 3, Allegany-Limestone 1

CUBA — It’s been one of the hardest battles that defending League Champion Cuba-Rushford has had to face this season. For the final time in regular season play on Thursday, the Rebels were looking to bring out the brooms against the newest arrivals in Allegany-Limestone to maintain their position at the top of the leaderboard.

After each team split the first two sets of the match, it was anyone’s game in what would be the last two sets of the night. Luckily for the hosts in blue and white, they had just enough firepower in the arsenal to deliver the victory in the Wighthouse, as they swept the Gators in the season with a four-set, 25-14, 10-25, 25-22, 25-21 triumph.

“Overall, this was a really hard-fought match. Allegany-Limestone is a very, very good team, so I’m happy that we were able to get the win by playing incredibly hard,” said Rebels coach Nick Perillo.

The Rebels (9-1) were led by Max Hinckley on the attack, fueling the efforts with his nine team-high kills. Maddox Keller helped the cause with three big blocks at the front of the net to go with two kills, while setter Allen Fuller handed out 18 assists to couple alongside six aces from the service line, and three more kills.

Cuba-Rushford will look to become the first team to 10 wins this season when they return to action on Wednesday with a 6 p.m. visit to the Lions of Wellsville.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 3, Fillmore 0

BELMONT — After a close fight with the Eagles of Fillmore right out of the gate, host Genesee Valley/Belfast settled in shortly after to deliver a big punch in the night’s second set, using the momentum to end their nights on the strongest of notes with a straight-set sweep of their opposition by a 25-20, 25-13, 25-19 count on Thursday.

Canaan Sullivan and Sean Mahon fronted a strong showing of offense to pace Genesee Valley/Belfast (4-6), as Sullivan led the brigade with his 12 game-high kills, while Mahon followed with nine more behind him. Setter Dominic Marra handed out a whopping 22 assists to help further the team’s cause on offense, pairing them with two more kills of his own.

Fillmore (1-10) saw Aiden Wagner take control of the team’s attack, posting six service points along with five blocks and four kills. Nathan Tanner pitched in with six digs on defense to couple with three kills, while setter Kyle Paulsen handed out six helpers to pair with four service points, three digs and one ace.

Both teams are back in action at 6 p.m. on Tuesday after the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, as Genesee Valley/Belfast pays a visit to Arkport/Canaseraga, while Fillmore heads back home to host Bolivar-Richburg.

Hammondsport 47, Houghton Academy 27

HAMMONDSPORT — With the game’s first lead in hand, the time for the Hammondsport Lakers to build was right before the first half reached its end, as they provided solid play on both ends of the floor to keep visiting Houghton Academy at a standstill, using the tone-setting quarter to propel themselves towards their first win of the season by a 47-27 count on Thursday.

After both teams remained close with one another through the opening sequences, a turning of the tide would occur in the final eight minutes before halftime, as the Lakers brought it all together to extend their lead permanently over Houghton Academy behind a massive 14-2 run to close up shop.

The Panthers (1-5) were fronted by a team-high 15 point effort by Jack Prentice. James Adenuga chipped in with eight more points, while Jack Qi and Bob Zheng each had a two-point basket.

Houghton Academy heads back home to welcome in Andover/Whitesville for a 6 p.m. visit on Tuesday.

GAINESVILLE — Since her magnificent 24-point performance back on Tuesday against the Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford, Hope Russell has emerged as one of Fillmore’s main playmakers on the floor.

Two days later, it was no different when the team went north to Letchworth on Thursday, as she helped create a spark in the second half in the midst of their defensive battle with 10 of her game-high 14 points to lift the Lady Eagles towards victory — their sixth in a row, locking it up with some key free throw shooting down the stretch in their 31-24 win over the host Lady Indians.

“This was definitely a defensive battle tonight,” said Lady Eagles coach Tom Parks. “Both teams had trouble finding some sustained rhythms, but fortunately for us, we were able to find some good stretches where we took care of the basketball and made shots when we needed them. Hope had another big night for us, scoring 10 of her 14 in the second half. She helped create some big moments particularly in the third that allowed us to gain some extra breathing room. Free throw shooting was real important as well, that helped us seal the win.”

The Lady Eagles (6-2) were able to ward off a battle from Letchworth through the first half of play, winning the defensive battle by translating their game to the offense with a 12-5 lead after the opening quarter.

After an all-out defensive second quarter, the visitors in green and white would collect some more cushioning to their lead led by Russell’s big second half, branching the Fillmore lead out to 25-15 going into the fourth quarter, where they would hold it for good.

Finishing behind Russell was Preslee Miller, as she contributed six points of her own. Rachel Hatch and Mattie McCumiskey each finished with four points.

Fillmore will now head into this weekend remaining scorching hot, as they look to capture their seventh straight win at the 7th Annual Dan Barkley Showcase in Bath, facing the Lady Titans of Avoca/Prattsburgh at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

ANDOVER — Vanessa Hall buckled down and delivered another outstanding performance, as the Andover/Whitesville senior erupted for a monster 34-point night that started from beginning to end, helping her team roll into a big weekend with a 55-33 victory over visiting Cuba-Rushford on Thursday.

Through a back-and-forth quarter, both teams saw their leaders rise to the occasion as Hall and Cuba-Rushford’s Taylor Searle took control of their offenses with the bulk of their respective points, resulting in an early two-point lead for Andover/Whitesville (7-1) to control going forward.

With it, the hosts in white were able to continue maintaining the momentum in their favor by outscoring the Lady Rebels (5-6) in every remaining quarter to build and extend upon their lead, including two strong half-ending finishes, including a 13-5 run in the last eight minutes that allowed them to seal up the victory permanently.

Hall led all scorers on the floor with a game-high 34 points for Andover/Whitesville, 19 of those points coming in the first half of play. Zoe Baert added in six points, while Gabby Terhune had five.

Cuba-Rushford saw Searle continue leading the charge behind her team-high 19 points. Cloey Larabee had five points to add for the Lady Rebels, who are now off until next Friday night back on the road, visiting Genesee Valley/Belfast for a 7:30 p.m. contest in Belmont.

HAMMONDSPORT — A wild finish to the battle in Hammondsport came into fruition, when the Lady Panthers of Houghton Academy rallied back in their strongest quarter of the night. Applying all the pressure possible against the Lady Lakers down the stretch, the Lady Panthers would come close, but would fall just short of the mark, as the hosts held on for dear life in the last eight minute to secure the 36-35 victory on Thursday.

Hammondsport controlled much of the action to start the night on their home floor, as they produced a quick lead after a close battle with Houghton Academy (2-6) before opening it up right before the half’s conclusion in the second quarter, holding the Lady Panthers to just a trio of points in the midst of their 14-3 first half-ending run to branch it out to 15 at the break.

The visitors in blue would not back down without a fight however, as they slowly but surely started to come within reach of the Lady Lakers down the stretch of the second half, including a key fourth quarter run that very nearly sent them over the top. But despite the late pressure, the hosts in white and purple were able to hang on to the smallest of strings to secure the victory.

Despite the loss, Jess Prentice recorded a stellar night on the attack for Houghton Academy, accounting for a game-high 30 points. Jessica Adenuga had the team’s remaining five points.

The Lady Panthers will look to bounce back on Tuesday back on the road, this time down the road to their crosstown rivals Fillmore, for a 4:30 p.m. contest.

AVOCA — The Lady Redskins of Canisteo-Greenwood were looking for another giant head of steam to roll into this weekend’s Barkley Showcase at Bath-Haverling with. On Thursday, they were granted that after a first quarter explosion set the bar against host Avoca/Prattsburgh, as they strolled forward towards victory and never looked back on a 53-38 road win over the Lady Titans.

All the Lady Redskins needed to make a statement was the opening eight minutes, where they wasted absolutely no time in getting the start they wanted against Avoca/Prattsburgh with their most powerful stand of offense in the game — a 22-4 run of the Lady Titans that saw them bring the hammer down almost immediately, led by four different scorers from the field.

The momentum would continue to roll over in the next three quarters to help widen their lead even further against the hosts in white and black, with Lillian Mullen leading the charge in the offensive department with 15 of her game-high 21 points all coming in the first half to help set for the visitors in red, who finished the first half with a 35-12 lead.

In addition to her game-high performance, Mullen would also add in seven steals. Behind her, Brooke Burd was a single point and rebound away from capturing a double-double, finishing with nine points and nine boards. Bailey Mullen added seven points to pair with seven rebounds of her own to help round off another electric Canisteo-Greenwood performance on the attack.

The Lady Redskins will now get set for battle in a colossal showdown with local heavyweight Andover/Whitesville at the 7th Annual Dan Barkley Showcase in Bath this weekend, as the two foes come together for a 2 p.m. matchup on Saturday.

BOLIVAR — With the end of the regular season rapidly approaching for the grapplers on the mat, teams will need everything they can muster in order to

Bolivar-Richburg was tasked with quite possibly one of their toughest challenges of the season from a team just 15 minutes down the road — the Portville Panthers. On Thursday, the visitors from across town rode a big wave of momentum behind numerous forfeitures through the middleweight division, adding to their lead with a pair of wins in competition to take a 27-12 lead.

But the advantage held by the Panthers would not hold for much longer, as Bolivar-Richburg found their groove to close out the night, recording five of the last six wins, three of them by Caden Allen, Trent Sibble and Gary McDowell on the mat, helping them pull ahead of their opposition with a 41-33 comeback victory.

The match would begin on a positive note for the Wolverines at 132 pounds, as Trey Buchholz garnered the first of four match victories via pinfall — his coming during the second period against Parker Dornan, nearly a minute in. A slew of forfeits then followed, with Portville being awarded three of the next four matches before Tavyn MacDonell became victorious with one of his own at 160 pounds.

Two more Portville wins were discovered at 172 and 189 pounds, which saw Jake Ziegler and Bolivar-Richburg’s Zach Mitchell battle hard from start to finish in their match at 172 pounds. 23 combined points were scored by the two competitors through the battle, as Ziegler edged out Mitchell for the 13-10 decision win.

The Wolverines would then shake it off and piece together a strong conclusion to the match, as they recorded five straight wins led by Caden Allen and Trent Sibble in the heavyweight division, each garnering pinfall wins of 3:10 and 1:37 at 215, and 285 pounds respectively.

To further the team’s cause, James Gleason (102 pounds) and Teegan Sibble (110 pounds) added the last two forfeit wins for the hosts before Gary McDowell was able to seal the comeback win for good with his pinfall win at 118 pounds, battling hard with Portville’s Mekhi Muhyee to grab the pinfall win with nearly a minute left in the final period.

Bolivar-Richburg is back on the mat Tuesday night downstairs, as they host the Alfred-Almond Eagles in a 6:15 p.m. bout.

Wellsville 72, Genesee Valley/Belfast 64

WELLSVILLE — Looking to rebound after a tough defeat to one of the local area’s toughest in the water Alfred-Almond, the Lions of Wellsville made sure the trip back home for their first home meet of the new year was a successful one, as they started fast against visiting Genesee Valley/Belfast and never looked back to record a 72-64 victory on Thursday.

The Lions would kick off the meet with four of the first five wins in the water to help set an early tone in the opening half, three of them in a row, beginning with the team of JT Mariotti, Sean Driscoll, Thomas Cooke and Landon Cinque recording the winning time of 2:08.38 in the 200 medley relay. Ben Jordan and Ethan Everett would then add the first individual wins for the team a short time later, as they went back-to-back with triumphant times in the 200 freestyle (2:04.06) and 200 individual medley (2:26.92), respectively.

Tyler Rahr would end the opening half with a victorious score off the Diving board (139.80).

Wellsville would add one final overall victory from Everett, Cooke, Cinque and Ayden Faulkner in the 200 freestyle relay, as the four Lions converged to record a winning 1:53.28 time.

Genesee Valley/Belfast collected five first place finishes to keep pace behind the Lions, with Nolan Hunter fronting the efforts with a pair of individual wins in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke each, while Bryce Davis (50 freestyle) and Emalee Carman (100 breaststroke) followed with individual medals of their own. The team would also collect a relay victory from the squadron of Carman, Addison Bradt, Regina Dougherty and Ashley Burrows in the 400 freestyle relay.

The Lions will now hit the road for their next battle in the water on Tuesday, visiting Campbell-Savona at 5:30 p.m.
