Monday Roundup: Lions stay hot, send out Brockway, Green in style with offensive 12-0 Senior Night win over C-R; B-R nabs big win over Coudersport, Cater’s big homer aids GV/Belfast past Fillmore

WELLSVILLE — After spending one of their last times together with their fellow senior classmates this past weekend in Boston, Alex Green and Cooper Brockway came home and spent one of their very last times as teammates on the diamond in the Lion’s Den on Monday, as Wellsville recognized their senior leaders and their contributions over the years prior to their return to action against Cuba-Rushford.

With a shutout over the road against the Rebels in the wagon already, the Lions went on to repeat history once more to send their two seniors out in grand style, as they used a rapid start in the beginning stages, along with a three-pitcher sequence on the rubber to hold Cuba-Rushford to two hits, setting the tone for what was a 12-0 shutout after five complete innings to stay red hot ahead of Wednesday’s titanic showdown with Bolivar-Richburg.

“Tonight was a celebration for our two senior leaders,” said Lions coach Tom Delahunt. “I mentioned to the team before the game that we can't get two finer young men than what we have now with them. They lead by example, their dedication to this sport and that's something the younger kids look up to. It's nice to recognize them in their last season with us for what they do and what they brought to this program.”

Following the gorgeous turning of a 6-4-3 double play in the infield for the Lions (14-1), they would go on to use the momentum to create a rapid start against the Rebels again with a 2-0 lead in the first, scoring their runs off an infield error and the first of two RBI smacks off the bat from Matt Ritter to break the ice.

Wellsville kept firing on all cylinders after another strong defensive feature in the field, going 1-2-3 with the Rebels (6-7) bats to claim their spots at the plate once again, this time adding five more runs, powered by a two-run single from Aiden Cowburn, a bases-loaded walk, a second RBI from Ritter on a sacrifice to deep center field and an infield error by the visitors in gray and blue to create a 7-0 lead that they would never lose.

The Lions would put a wrap on the scoring with their last five runs coming in the bottom of the fourth, eclipsing the double-digit mark to force an early end to the contest. In all, the Wellsville offense collected 12 runs off 10 total hits, with three different Lions all posting at least a pair of hits.

Leading the charge was Cowburn, Ty Vogel and Karson Grover, each recording two hits. Cooper Brockway chipped in with an RBI and two runs scored. On the mound, the win was charged to Gavin Haggerty, who went the first three innings behind three strikeouts and two walks. Grover and Derek Coleman would enter in relief, combining for four more strikeouts to finish off a stellar showing on the mound for the hosts in black and orange.

“Gavin (Haggerty) gave us three good innings and we got a tough schedule ahead with Bolivar-Richburg and Addison coming up. Monday with Wayland-Cohocton as well,” said Delahunt. “Gavin gave us what we needed to get prepared for those games, and Karson (Grover) and Derek (Coleman) also saw some time pitching as well to help us out. Those three took the ball and did their jobs. Offensively, we spread the hits out and got contributions from multiple different kids. We don’t depend on just that single kid or two, so it was really nice to see everyone fill out the stat sheet.”

For Cuba-Rushford, Finn Ricketts mustered two strikeouts and a walk during his tenure of relief on the mound. At the plate, Braeden Wight and Dean Frank each had a single. The Rebels will look to get back into the win column back home tonight for a 5 p.m. contest against incoming Andover/Whitesville.

Wellsville is now off until their reemergence on the diamond Wednesday in the Lion’s Den, hosting the Bolivar-Richburg Wolverines in what will be the titanic showdown of the season, beginning at 5 p.m.

Bolivar-Richburg 9, Coudersport 1

BOLIVAR — Having already encountered an 11-inning war with Port Allegany, Otto-Eldred in their home tournament and Cameron County this past weekend, the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg were in a position to sweep all four of their battles of the border when Monday night arrived in its entirety.

To finish off the docket, Class C2’s top seed embraced another challenge from within their exemplary and challenging docket: The Coudersport Falcons, winners in 11 of their 12 games entering the 30-mile road trip up north to the Wolverine Den.

It was as advertised across the first several innings of action between both squads, with the Wolverines quick start allowing them to jet into the lead right away. Although the Falcons remained hot on their trail, the hosts found a way to break it open in the biggest of ways.

Aydin Sisson carried the big stick.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth and looking to break the game wide open, the Bolivar-Richburg senior delivered by detonating the biggest piece of dynamite one could offer — a bases-clearing triple from within what was a five-run stanza to keep their foot down on the gas pedal, leaving Coudersport behind them to hang another colossal victory into the win column by a 9-1 count.

“It was a great game to be a part of. Coudersport is an excellent ball club and they’re really well-coached,” Wolverines coach Dustin Allen said. “They were 11-1 coming into this game, and we were able to get an excellent pitching performance from Landon (Barkley), along with some key hits early on leading up to the big inning down the stretch to help us out big time. Aydin’s triple in the fifth really found a way for us to break the floodgates open.”

The Wolverines (14-1) struck first following the authoring of a defensive first inning between the two foes, as they used a massive triple from Caden Allen to set the dinner table, followed by some key special teams play around the bases to scratch across both scores. Coudersport would not let it go unanswered however, as they cut the deficit in half with their lone run of the game stemming in the third.

For the remainder of the game, Bolivar-Richburg would then take complete and utter command of the Falcons by scoring the last seven runs in a row — five of them in the bottom of the fifth which saw the Wolverines load the bases up for Aydin Sisson to hit the jackpot with, clearing all three bags up with an absolute missile to left field, reaching the back of the fence for a gargantuan triple to break it open. Caden Allen added an RBI single a short time later to plate Sisson.

The hosts in white and red stripes would finish off the scoring with two more runs in the bottom of the sixth before Landon Barkley put a bow on what was his best outing of the season to keep the Falcons off-balance from start to finish. After walking the first two batters he faced, the Bolivar-Richburg junior advanced towards a three-hit victory, shelling out a dozen chairs to Coudersport in his complete game.

On offense, Sisson and Allen each led the Wolverines with two hits, as the team recorded six in all.

Before their titanic showdown with red hot Wellsville the following night, Bolivar-Richburg will look to send their Seniors out in style in quick turnaround fashion tonight with a 5 p.m. first pitch against Friendship/Scio.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 8, Fillmore 4

FILLMORE — In a game that saw a little bit of everything unravel at the Town Park in Fillmore on Monday, Genesee Valley/Belfast and Fillmore came together for another close encounter on the diamond. With the early stages seeing a defensive battle develop in thin air, there was little room for error.

With the host Eagles continuing to chase down and close in on Genesee Valley/Belfast any way they could, the visitors would need to formulate a quick response. In the third inning, Matt Cater came to the rescue.

The score was all tied up at one, but that would change at an instant, as the Genesee Valley/Belfast senior unloaded on a bomb to deep left field that showed no signs of coming back, helping start a strand of seven unanswered runs for the Class D heavyweights to solidify their advantage on the host Eagles in permanent fashion with an 8-4 victory to split their season series on each other’s home fields.

“It was a tense ballgame and that is something important for us to experience,” said GV/Belfast coach Dennis Miles. “We’re still learning how to play under pressure, but we had to make a lot of plays because Ryan (Daciw) only had four strikeouts. Sometimes, defense can be deceiving, because we had to make the rest of the outs behind him. Some of them were fly balls, some of them were routine. We held up pretty well and Fillmore never quit either. They have a great tradition of baseball over here and it’s been like that for quite some time. They didn’t go away by any means.”

In what was a game of retribution for Genesee Valley/Belfast after enduring a 7-5 come-from-behind victory in Fillmore’s favor earlier this year, the festivities would begin with two quick runs in the opening pair of frames from each team, with the Eagles claiming the game’s first run before the visitors in black came right back to tie the game in the top half of the second.

The Eagles would remain at a standstill going ahead in time, as Genesee Valley/Belfast (12-2) brought the firepower to the table during their next several appearances at the plate, beginning with a go-ahead three-run third inning paced by Cater’s two-run jack to left field to propel them ahead, ultimately for good.

The stanza would allow Genesee Valley/Belfast to begin a 7-0 run of Fillmore (6-6), with two more runs in each of the next two frames to stretch their advantage to six. The Eagles would not display any quit however, as they remained in the game with a two-run answer in the fifth to close the gap, before formulating one final comeback effort in the seventh.

But the second inning would manage to hold in place for Genesee Valley/Belfast in the driver’s seat, claiming the victory that awaited at the end of the battle.

Genesee Valley/Belfast assembled eight runs off nine hits on the attack, with Ryan Daciw and his 3-for-4 outing leading the way, posting a double and driving in a run. Nolan Hunter chipped in with two hits of his own. On the rubber, Daciw went all seven innings, fanning four and walking three to pick up the win.

Fillmore was led by Nolan Krzeminski, who had two of the team’s eight hits. On the mound, Brayden Hennard saw two appearances at the beginning and in the seventh to help close the game out, combining to record two strikeouts and a walk.

Both teams will march back onto the field tonight in a pair of 5 p.m. first pitches, with Genesee Valley/Belfast heading back into the Jungle in Belmont to welcome in Hinsdale, while Fillmore hits the road for a colossal visit to Arkport-Canaseraga.

Alfred-Almond 11, Andover/Whitesville 6

ANDOVER — Both Alfred-Almond and Andover/Whitesville provided mirroring images in the first inning to remain stride for stride with one another. But then the visiting Eagles built some momentum to break away towards the game’s largest advantageous margin. But the hosts in purple did not back down, chasing down their coattails all the way to the end.

In the seventh inning however, Alfred-Almond would leave Andover/Whitesville in the rearview mirror completely, as they scored four humongous runs to take a one-run lead and turn it into an 11-6 road victory in Andover, Monday night.

Following the Eagles claiming an early 2-0 lead, Andover/Whitesville (3-9) would take matters into their own hands immediately off the hop. With a lead-off walk being issued to Brody Vance, Colton Calladine would step to the plate on the very next at-bat and go yard, crushing a game-tying two-run homer to create level playing ground once again.

Each team would go back and forth in trading a 1-2-3 after Alfred-Almond was able to reclaim the lead with another quick response in the top of the second, posting two more runs to go up by a 4-2 count. It would commence a scoreless run that the Eagles would carve out on the scoreboard, as they went on to score the next five in a row to claim a 7-2 advantage in the fourth.

It was the first of two occasions that the Eagles would take a lead of five runs on Andover/Whitesville, with the first being whittled down to a single run with a four-run bottom of the fourth in return, led by a bases-loaded walk and then back-to-back RBI singles from Vance and Calladine to keep them within reach.

The pitching staffs would keep one another at bay across the next two innings before the seventh took full effect, as the Eagles managed to create one final opening to exploit against Andover/Whitesville and veer towards victory for good by posting four clutch runs to ensure that their lead remained untouchable.

The Eagles would go on to close out the game with a rapid 1-2-3 of Andover/Whitesville at the plate to cement the win.

Andover/Whitesville posted six runs off just five hits, with Calladine leading the sticks with two of them. Vance, Vinny Joyce and Rogan Perkins each had one to chip in. On the mound, Calladine came on for an exceptional outing of relief, fanning eight and walking four.

Up next is a quick turnaround for Andover/Whitesville over the road, as they prepare for a 5 p.m. visit to Cuba-Rushford tonight.

Canisteo-Greenwood 25, Friendship/Scio 3 (F-5)

SCIO — A humongous 12-run stanza during their opening at-bats was issued to visiting Canisteo-Greenwood to set the tone at an instant during Monday’s road trip to Scio, as they jumped out front and remained in complete command to close up shop with a five-inning victory by a 25-3 count over host Friendship/Scio.

Canisteo-Greenwood mustered 10 hits on offense while capitalizing on key special teams along the way to get the party started at the plate. Leading the way was James Smith, who posted two hits. On the mound, the win was awarded to Garrett Charles, who fanned five and walked two during his start into the fourth inning of play.

Friendship/Scio (0-11) collected seven hits at the plate to propel their offense. Leading the way was a perfect 3-for-3 outing from Nick Sortore that featured a triple. Tyler Nickerson followed with two hits of his own, driving home two of the team’s three runs. On the hill, Deacon Brown provided a solid showing of relief, striking out four and walking two.

Friendship/Scio hits the road for a 5 p.m. visit to the Bolivar-Richburg Wolverines this evening.

SOFTBALL

Alfred-Almond 8, Andover/Whitesville 4

ANDOVER — The bats were alive and well between Alfred-Almond and Andover/Whitesville on Monday, with both teams converging to produce over 20 hits at the plate. It was a back-and-forth exchange early on, but after a first inning deadlock was temporarily set in place, the Lady Eagles broke it with six unanswered runs to take the lead away for good, as they moved towards an 8-4 win in Andover.

The two squads came together for a close battle across the first two innings of play, beginning with a Paige Marlatt RBI single to break the ice for the Lady Eagles in their opening at-bats. Andover/Whitesville (3-8) did not let it go unresponsive however, as they fired a punch right back by tying the game at one with a score off some key special teams play.

Following the exchange of a scoreless second inning, the Lady Eagles would foresee an opening to travel through, propelling ahead with a two-run third inning to take the lead, building on it later on in tremendous fashion. With the Alfred-Almond defense proceeding to keep Andover/Whitesville shut down on offense, the visitors in blue added three massive runs — two off a big double down the left field line from Taylor Flaitz, branching the Lady Eagles lead to 6-1.

After adding another run in the top of the fourth inning, Andover/Whitesville didn’t go down without a middle frame fight, as they brought three runs across on the counterattack in the fifth — two of them off a strong single into the outfield from Lilly Harrington, closing the gap to 7-4 going forward. But in the end, the Lady Eagles added one last piece of insurance in the sixth inning to further cushion their lead and ultimate victory at the end of the battle.

Andover/Whitesville strung together four runs off nine hits to propel their offense. Leading the efforts were Harrington, Olivia Waters and Reece Winters, all posting two hits. In the circle, Makaila Brewster went all seven innings, handing out five chairs and walking just one.

For Alfred-Almond, the win on the mound belonged to Olivia Flaitz, going the distance with one strikeout and two walks. At the plate, Taylor Flaitz captained the bats with three hits, including a lead-off triple in the sixth inning. Paige Marlatt also had three hits, while Ella Dusinberre and Abby Hurd both had two to chip in.

Andover/Whitesville will look to take aim at a potential season-sweep of Cuba-Rushford tonight, as they prepare for a 5 p.m. visit to take on the Lady Rebels in a quick turnaround.

Fillmore 14, Genesee Valley/Belfast 2

FILLMORE — Riding high on a big extra inning win over Bolivar-Richburg and a doubleheader sweep of Arkport-Canaseraga late last week, the Lady Eagles of Fillmore were looking to add more fuel to their burning fire approaching the homestretch of the regular season. Monday night, they would do just that with a ferocious start against Genesee Valley/Belfast, using the bats in full force to ignite a massive 14-2 home victory — their fifth in seven games.

“We were very strong at the plate today,” said Lady Eagles coach Jon Beardsley. “It was just one of those days where we were really comfortable in the box. Genesee Valley/Belfast with Hannah (Southwick-Powers) on the mound is a tough team, and today just happened to be our day. We’ve been on both sides of these games. The girls played pretty solid defense and Mylee (Miller) is staying in control and minimizing her mistakes.”

Out of their 14 runs they would scratch across against the Genesee Valley/Belfast defense, Fillmore (8-7) would knock on the door immediately with 11 of those runs coming in the first three innings of play to bring the hammer down with an advantage they would never lose from that point forward, as the offense scoured 15 hits in total, with four different Lady Eagles all recording at least a pair of hits.

Amongst the heavy hitters for the hosts in black and green was Preslee Miller, as she had the biggest bat of them all by going 3-for-5 with a double and five RBI. Mylee Miller chipped in with two hits of her own, including a double, and drove in three more runs. Oakley Frazier had three hits, while Kylee Ellsworth rounded out with two.

In the circle, the win belonged to Mylee Miller, who went all seven innings with five strikeouts and two walks, holding Genesee Valley/Belfast (9-5) to just four hits along the way.

For the visitors, Hannah Southwick-Powers fanned three and walked two in her two inning start on the mound. At the plate, Jenna Hill and Whitney Young each collected a hit and drove in a run. Genesee Valley/Belfast will look to turn it back around on Thursday with a 5 p.m. visit to Whitesville to battle host Andover/Whitesville.

GOLF

Genesee Valley/Belfast 197, Wellsville 210

WELLSVILLE — For the very first time during Lisa Scott-Schneider’s time as Genesee Valley/Belfast’s head golf coach in the Spring, they put together a season-sweeping performance on the links against the team they share it with — the Lions of Wellsville. On Monday, that was made possible behind a career-best round from Will Guilford, as he fought past Wellsville’s Ethan Bailey to earn medalist honors in the team’s 197-210 win at the Wellsville Country Club.

“Our team goal is to break 190. We need everyone to buckle down and make some more putts. Will shot his best round ever, so we’re hoping we can build off of that,” said Scott-Schneider. “We have three more regular season matches to go and then the Individual Qualifier coming up next week. The season is quickly coming to a close, so the hope is we can all shoot our best. On the same night, that would be utopia. It’s been a great season so far, and the best for this program in a while. I’m really proud of the team and their accomplishments so far.”

Guilford assembled the pieces to an extraordinary puzzle to lead Genesee Valley/Belfast (9-1) atop of the scorecard, firing a match-low round of 44 to outlast Wellsville’s Ethan Bailey for the top spot. Following behind was Grant Preston and his round of 49. Sean Mahon chipped in with his score of 51, while Chris Weaver had a 53.

The Lions (8-5) were propelled by Bailey and his team-low round of 45. Fletcher Kaye chipped in with his round of 52. Blake Kalkhof had a 54, while Maddy Parks rounded out with her round of 59.

Both teams will return to the Wellsville Country Club for battle on Wednesday, this time in their own respective matches beginning with 4 p.m. tee times, as Genesee Valley/Belfast plays the role of host against Bolivar-Richburg, while Wellsville welcomes in undefeated Fillmore for battle.

Saulter paved the way towards winning success for the Rebels (3-4) by firing the match’s lowest round across the nine-hole battle, as he shot the lowest round of 43. Kaden Bell chipped in with his score of 55, while Ethan Fries and Xavier Saulter rounded off with rounds of 57 and 60, respectively.

Bolivar-Richburg (1-6) was led by a team-low round of 53 fired by Cayden Gaines. David Abdo followed with a 59. James Margeson recorded a round of 60, while Zach Mitchell rounded out with his score of 68.

Both teams are back on the links Wednesday night with 4 p.m. starts, with the Rebels playing host to Hinsdale back at Allegheny Hills, while the Wolverines travel to the Wellsville Country Club to take on host Genesee Valley/Belfast.

Sisson defeated both Alfred-Almond’s Patrick Powers (10-0) and Dean Rischpater of Naples (10-5) to advance into the Semifinal round, where he fell to Avoca-Prattsburgh’s Elias Putnam — the Class’ defending champion, in a 10-7 decision. The following day in playback action, Sisson earned his spot in the State Qualifier at Brockport High School with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-2 win over Notre Dame-Batavia’s Chance King to finish third overall.

Sisson will be joined by his teammate Eben Schilke, who was granted an exceptional entry into the State Qualifiers himself, due to attending the school’s Senior Trip.

As for their first doubles squad, Knapp and Sanasith squeezed past the first round with a 10-5 win before falling in the Quarterfinals round, 10-1.
