Friday Roundup: Vogel fans 11, Green scores four hits as Wellsville survives another wild battle with 11-9 triumph in Hornell; Fri/Scio’s Ross outduels GV/Belfast’s Burrows to earn 3-0 shutout

HORNELL — It’s been quite the rollercoaster ride for the Lions in the past 24 hours. Back on Thursday, a rally of epic proportions developed against Canandaigua, when the bats came alive late in the top of the seventh where they scored six game-tying runs to raise the stakes against the Braves going into the final at-bats.

Even though Wellsville could not cap off the rally in the end, they would make sure they made up for it on the next night against a longtime rival in Hornell, Friday evening at Maple City Park.

This time, both the Lions and host Red Raiders went back in forth in th last three innings of play. But the final say was recorded in the top of the seventh again, where they scored a pair of runs to break the final tie with their opposition to remain in the lead for good, to secure the 11-9 wild finish.

“It’s always good news to beat Hornell. We’re excited to pull the game out against one of our biggest rivals,” said Lions coach Tom Delahunt. “Two on the board in the seventh, and then shutting them down was huge. We put the bat on the ball, and when you do that, you force the other team to make plays. 11 hits is pretty good against them, and not only did we have that, we caused them to have six errors for us to capitalize on.”

The Wellsville (3-3) offense came to life after the Hornell defense got a hot start to their game with two consecutive shutout innings while taking the early 1-0 lead in the process, getting some big help would come with a four-run third inning that gave them a lead to control.

Their lead would reach as high as four after piling two more runs on in the top of the fourth, but the deficit was quickly made up by the Red Raiders, who scored four huge runs in the fifth to tie the game at six. From that point forward, it was back and forth until the end, as each club traded a big inning in the sixth to keep pace with each other.

But the Lions were able to force one final lead change in the top of the seventh, scoring two go-ahead runs to secure the rebound victory over the Red Raiders.

The Wellsville offense collected 11 runs off 11 total hits, while Ty Vogel was superb on the hill in his four-inning start, striking out 11 Hornell batters while walking six in his no decision. Cooper Brockway would wind up collecting his first Varsity win with two strikeouts, and four walks. At the plate, Alex Green went a perfect 4-for-4 with a double, RBI and two runs scored. Aidan Riley drove in two runs off two hits, while Vogel collected a two-run single. Jere Havens scored three runs.

Today, the Lions continue their swing back home, as they aim to eclipse the .500 mark with a 1 p.m. visit from Bolivar-Richburg.

“It doesn’t get any easier,” said Delahunt. “The third game in a row for us tomorrow with Bolivar. It will be an early game for us to get back onto the field with. We’re looking forward to a great matchup against a great baseball team.”

Friendship/Scio 6, Genesee Valley/Belfast 2

SCIO — Clutch hitting can always play a major key in who comes away victorious night in, and night out. On Friday, it was down to the wire in Scio. With a late tie awaiting to be broken by both Genesee Valley/Belfast and host Friendship/Scio, something surely had to give in crunch time.

In the sixth inning, the hosts made sure the opportunity wasn’t wasted, as they broke a 2-2 tie with a big four-run frame to spring themselves ahead and into the driver’s seat, while the dfense managed to shut down Genesee Valley/Belfast one final time to secure the win, as they took the 6-2 decision away from the JagDogs.

“It was a great game, and there were a lot of back and forth play going on. Our bats were able to come alive at the right time,” said Friendship/Scio coach Brad Gertis. “Ethan Davenport threw an amazing game tonight. He was able to mix his pitches, and work out of a couple of big jams. The defense stayed strong behind him, even though we did a lot of bending but we never broke.”

The game was determined in the bottom of the sixth after both teams navigated their way toward a 2-2 tie through the past five innings leading up to the shape-shifting frame for Friendship/Scio (1-4). The frame was started by a Gabin Benhassine single to start getting the pistons firing on all cylinders. Later on, the gates opened as Joey Nickerson delivered with a clutch two-out, bases-clearing single to help record a four-run sixth inning to put the hosts ahead essentially for good.

While Friendship/Scio deliverd the win, Ethan Davenport was able to outlast Genesee Valley/Belfast’s (1-5) Matt Cater, as the two starting pitchers engaged in a fierce battle through the first four innings, both eclipsing at least 10 strikeouts in the game. Davenport went the distance for Friendship/Scio, striking out 10 and walking two in his twirled five-hitter.

On the other side, Cater dished out 11 strikeouts of his own to pair with five walks across four innings of work for Genesee Valley/Belfast. At the plate, Matt Weaver was the sole producer of the team’s two-run fourth, as he drove in an RBI to go with his two hits. Carter Stout added a single, and scored a run.

Both teams are back on the field on Monday in a pair of 5 p.m. contests, as Friendship/Scio heads back to Friendship to play host to Hinsdale, while Genesee Valley/Belfast heads back on the road themselves with a visit to Bolivar-Richburg.

Fillmore 16, Andover/Whitesville 2 (F-6)

ANDOVER — After Fillmore was able to get on the board to start the day, host Andover/Whitesville provided a big response of their own in their first at-bats, tying the game with one swing to force an early chess match in Andover on Friday.

But soon after, the Eagles took over shop, as the offense began to click on all facets, scoring at least a pair of runs in four of the last five innings of the night, while Luke Colombo kept the hosts at bay with a sublime stint of pitching on the rubber, as Fillmore soared their way towards a 16-2 victory after six innings.

Five different Eagles (5-1) all had a hand in jumpstarting the production on the attack, as Colombo, Brent Zubikowski, Nolan Krzeminski, Aiden Wagner and Alex Ellsworth each recorded a pair of hits, with Colombo and Krzeminski lifting the Eagles into the driver’s seat ultimately for good behind back-to-back RBI doubles in the team’s four-run second inning that broke a 2-2 tie.

From that point forward, the Eagles went on to score 14 unanswered runs while Colombo held Andover/Whitesville (1-2) in check after a two-run blast from Layton Miller saw them provide an early deadlock in the bottom of the first. The Fillmore hurler handed out 10 chairs in all along with two walks while allowing just one more hit after the Miller home run to take care of business.

On the other side, Miller fanned four and walked five in his four inning start for the hosts. The team’s final hit would come off the bat of Luke Erdmann, who scored a single in the bottom of the fourth. Andover/Whitesville will return to action Tuesday night back on their home field, as they welcome in Avoca/Prattsburgh for a 5:30 p.m. first pitch in Andover.

Bolivar-Richburg 20, Hinsdale 0 (F-5)

BOLIVAR — After a back and forth war against Fillmore back on Wednesday, the momentum wave that was created by Bolivar-Richburg was theirs to surf into the weekend. It began on Friday with a return back home, one that saw three different pitchers combine to throw the County’s first no-hitter in baseball, as the Wolverines coasted past visiting Hinsdale with a 20-0 victory in five innings.

While the pitching staff kept the visiting Bobcats at bay, the Wolverines (5-0) offense came alive in the same turn, as they scored 20 runs off 10 total hits, accounting for a run in each of the first four innings. Among the frames, a massive 13-run fourth inning that ultimately pushed their lead out insurmountably in the end to secure their fifth straight win to begin the young season.

On the hill, Caden Allen, Cam MacDonell and Reiss Gaines all combined to toss a no-hitter for the hosts in black and red, handing out a combined 11 chairs to go with three walks, with MacDonell’s relief appearance charging the defense with six strikeouts and two walks across just over two innings. At the plate, Aydin Sisson and Darien Champlin led the bats with a pair each, with Sisson driving in a run and scoring three times, while Champlin drove in a pair.

In addition, Gaines contributed three RBI, while Evan Pinney added in a two-run single. For Hinsdale (0-2), Sam Cashimere struck out one and walked five in his relief appearance on the mound. The Bobcats will hit the road Monday night to Friendship for a 5 p.m. contest against Friendship/Scio.

SOFTBALL

Friendship/Scio 3, Genesee Valley/Belfast 0

SCIO — It was as good of a pitcher’s duel as any between Genesee Valley/Belfast and Friendship/Scio from across the road at the softball field in Scio, Friday evening. Both Ashley Burrows and Nevaeh Ross went pitch for pitch down to the end in a game that just saw five hits combined between their respective teams.

Fortunately for Friendship/Scio, their offense came towards the beginning stages of the battle, scoring all three runs in the second and third innings with just three big swings while Ross continued to hand out one chair after another to help the defending Class D2 champions squeeze their way towards a 3-0 shutout win, their fifth in a row.

While the offense broke the ice beginning in the second inning, Ross headlined the defensive outburst with yet another twirled gem from within the circle, as the Friendship/Scio (5-0) sophomore handed out 16 chairs and walked just one, holding Genesee Valley/Belfast to just a pair of hits at the plate.

The hosts were the first to strike on a fielder’s choice from Jadeyn Shields in the second inning, scratching Katherine Lamberson across. Then Ross and Lamberson provided back-to-back RBI hits in the third inning to put an early bow on the scoring, with Ross driving in younger sister, Morghyn Ross on a deep triple, while Nevaeh scored an at-bat later off Lamberson’s RBI single.

In addition to the RBI hits, Morghyn Ross added a first inning two-out double to help the cause.

For the Lady JagDogs (1-4), Ashley Burrows turned in a fine performance of her own to counter Ross’, as she struck out 10 and walked three from the rubber. The team would collect just two hits, with Hannah Southwick-Powers recording a triple, while Brooke Middaugh had a single.

Friendship/Scio will now have a little time away to regroup before they go for their sixth straight win to start the season on Wednesday, when they visit the Bolivar-Richburg Lady Wolverines in a 5 p.m. showdown, while Genesee Valley/Belfast gets their first crack at the defending Class C2 champions right after the weekend on Monday at 5 p.m.

Andover/Whitesville 9, Fillmore 6

ANDOVER — Like most close battles, crunch time is when the pressure really begins to mount. On Friday, that was no different in Andover, with host Andover/Whitesville trading barbs with the visiting Lady Eagles of Fillmore.

The back and forth blows came at a premium, with multiple ties and lead changes coming as a result of it. After Fillmore found a way to take Andover/Whitesville’s first lead away from them, the hosts had to react quickly. Starting in the fifth inning, they would go on to rattle off five unanswered runs, including a three-spot in the sixth to pull themselves back ahead for good to secure a 9-6 home win over the Lady Eagles.

“It was a fun game tonight,” said Andover/Whitesville co-coach Al Barber. “Both starting pitchers did well to keep the game close early, and both had their fair share of errors and base-running mistakes. We were on the cusp of having a big sixth inning with the bases loaded, but we invented new ways to get ourselves out. Fillmore started to comeback in the seventh, but if it wasn’t for a big catch, we probably could be still playing.”

Baserunning saw Fillmore strike first right away in the third inning, with two of their runs scratching across on error. But not long after the afact, Andover/Whitesville (2-1) came right back with a punch the size of a four-run third in the bottom half, with Rachel Jackson providing a big bat that saw her drive a two-run triple to the outfield to help power the hosts ahead.

In the top of the fourth, the Lady Eagles (3-3) continued to repsond with a three-run frame of their own doing, led by back-to-back RBI from Zoe Beardsley and Lizzy Nugent, each recording an RBI single and double respectively to vault over Andover/Whitesville in the lead by a 6-4 count.

That lead would remain until the last two innings before the seventh for the hosts, as Gabbi Hall started a two-run fifth off with an RBI single. The game was officially put on ice a single inning later, as Gabby Terhune provided two major pieces of insurance — a two-run single to score Zoey Lee and Hall to give Andover/Whitesvlle the room they needed to survie in the end.

Makaila Brewster struck out four and walked two in her four-inning start before Zoey Lee came aboard to add in a fan and two walks along the way for the hosts.

On the other side of the field, Saige Friedl went the distance for the Lady Eagles, fanning eight and walking three. At the plate, Lizzy Nugent had the big bat, recording a double and driving in three runs. Fillmore will hit the road for Cuba-Rushford Monday night for a 5 p.m. contest.

Andover/Whitesville rides their momentum into Richburg this morning, as they get set to face the host Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg in an 11 a.m. first pitch.
