Thursday Roundup: Ordway, Stuck each go yard to aid Wellsville’s 9-run 2nd inning in 18-0 blank of Addison; Hornell overcomes B-R’s rally to win in 8 innings; Lions baseball docks 9th win in first 10

WELLSVILLE — To say that the Lady Lions of Wellsville have a bust rest of the week ahead, would be a massive understatement. Thursday night’s return to historic Tullar Field would serve as the first of four straight games that the defending three-time Class B2 champions will play across the next three days, as they looked for lightning to strike with Addison in town for a visit.

Both teams traded a scoreless first outing on offense before the action flipped to the second inning. An inning where everything was flipped on its head. Following another zero to hang onto the board, the Lady Lions and their bats began to cook. With the assistance of Marissa Ordway and Lindsay Stuck, they would leave absolutely no doubt.

Literally.

From within the team’s nine-run bottom of the second inning, Wellsville unleashed their fury against the Lady Knights by posting a nine-run stanza that they never looked back on. Aiding those efforts were the bats of the Lady Lions senior and junior, as they combined to record seven of the RBI — with Ordway launching a three-run missile into orbit, while Stuck followed later on in the frame with a gargantuan grand slam to send them over the top and towards an 18-0 shutout.

Before the Lady Lions shattered the glass completely, they would have to overcome a tough first outing from the Lady Knights defense in the bottom of the first inning. Following their first hit on a shallow poke into left field by Sawyer Burke, the next three Lady Lions would go down in order at the plate to allow Addison to work their way off the field.

No momentum was garnered by the visitors in maroon however, as the Lady Lions worked their way off the field themselves to build a full head of steam going into their second at-bats. In it, their first two runners of the stand reached base with no issue, setting the stage for Ordway’s monster three-run homer that left Tullar Field quickly, earning the 3-0 lead.

Immediately following her home run, the Lady Lions wasted no time loading the bags behind the Addison defense. With one out remaining idle on the scoreboard, two of those on base would come across on Brazen Beckwith’s smoking of the ball straight up the middle into center field to extend their advantage by five.

Then, the floodgates opened even further.

Upon another reloading of the bags against the Lady Knights, the hosts in gray and orange unloaded them all with the aid of Stuck, who went yard for the team’s second bomb of the inning — her second of the season, a grand slam to deep left field that showed no signs of coming back, as Wellsville’s lead escalated to a nine-run stranglehold.

Addison would not go down after the fact, as they came right back with an attempt to respond to the monstrous frame of play, garnering two baserunners themselves off consecutive hits, including one from Bregan Jones on a well hit ball into the right center field gap. Both of the Lady Knights runners would be left on base at the end of the threat, as Makenzie Cowburn bounced back and delivered an inning-ending fan to work their way off.

As a result, Wellsville would harvest all of the momentum the game offered to close it out after five complete innings, scoring nine more runs across the next two outings — seven of them in the bottom of the fourth, to finish off their fourth straight win.

Cowburn, along with Makenna Dunbar in the circle, combined to hold Addison to just four hits, with the senior starter recording the win behind nine strikeouts and a walk. Dunbar then made her presence in relief in the final inning of play, recording two strikeouts.

At the plate, Sawyer Burke led the bats with a perfect 4-for-4 outing, driving home a pair of runs. Lindsay Stuck, Natalie Adams (double) and Marissa Ordway all had two hits to chip in.

The Lady Lions are back at Tullar Field tonight for a 6 p.m. battle against Springville-Griffith Institute, originating out of Buffalo.

RICHBURG — In their occupation of Stan Harris Field, the Lady Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg found themselves behind the eight-ball early to the Hornell Lady Red Raiders, who utilized the entire field to claim a lead as large as six runs in the early-going of their Thursday night clash.

But through it all, the Lady Wolverines chipped, clawed and dredged their way back into the game with a phenomenal come-from-behind, game-tying sequence in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extra innings. But in the top half of the eight however, the Lady Red Raiders were prepared.

Especially Kaidence Gollnitz, who laid the lumber down with a mammoth two-run blast off of Kylee Whiting to put some massive insurance on the scoreboard for the visitors in red. To ensure their lead, Alexis Smith held steady from within the circle and ended the game with her sixth and final strikeout to keep Bolivar-Richburg at bay to lockdown the 9-7 win.

Hornell’s reign of terror around the bases began immediately in the top of the first, when they scorched through their entire lineup to set up shop. Led by a multitude of errors in the field, as well as an RBI double off the bat of Selena Maldonado, the Lady Red Raiders delivered the game’s first strike with a 5-0 lead of the Lady Wolverines. In turn on their first stand of defense, they continued to harbor all the momentum with a rapid 1-2-3 of the home side’s bats to finish the frame flawlessly.

Following a sacrifice fly by Jordyn Dyring to extend the Hornell lead, the Lady Wolverines (2-3) navigated their way onto the board with a pair of runs — scoring one off an error and then an RBI from Sommer Beckwith to trim the deficit down to four. The score would remain the same, leading up to the fifth after two straight scoreless innings, when the hosts in pink kept chipping away with an RBI single from Rylee Whiting, now cutting the deficit in half.

As the Lady Wolverines kept freezing the Lady Red Raiders on offense, their big rally would ultimately reach its climax in the seventh during their final stand, as they capitalized on baserunning and a large-sized RBI single from Danika Saunders to rally all the way back and create even playing ground, forcing extra innings.

The two foes would just need one extra stanza to decide it all, and it was one that Hornell made the most of. Proceeding an RBI single from Raegan Evingham that allowed the visitors back on top, it was then Gollnitz’s turn to make some noise, as she ensured the Lady Red Raiders lead would remain intact with an insurance-providing, two-run bomb. Hornell would turn back around and hold Bolivar-Richburg strong at the plate behind Smith’s guidance in the circle, striking out the final batter with one on base to end the game.

The Lady Wolverines accounted for seven runs off 11 total hits, with Rylee Whiting’s 4-for-5 outing at the plate propelling the offense. On the mound, Kylee Whiting went the distance behind nine strikeouts and six walks.

For Hornell, Smith collected the win with six strikeouts and four walks in the circle, while the offense finished off a nine-run, nine-hit tenure of attack. Evingham led the Lady Red Raider bats with three, while Smith chipped in with two.

Bolivar-Richburg will look to right the ship Saturday morning up north with an 11 a.m. road trip to Bloomfield to visit the host Lady Bombers.

FILLMORE — It was safe to say that the bats belonging to the Lady Eagles of Fillmore were ripping, roaring and ready to go under the lights against Canisteo-Greenwood/Jasper-Troupsburg, as they remained patient at the plate behind a 15-hit outburst while avoiding the strikeout every single time along the way, as they generated a massive 16-1 home win.

Out of the 16 total runs that the Lady Eagles (3-4) would bring across the plate, 14 of them were plated in the first four innings of play, beginning with a massive icebreaker that saw them post a 6-0 lead right away. Seven different Lady Eagles all posted a hit in the lineup for the hosts in black and green, with a juggernaut 4-for-6 day from Delaney Hillman marqueeing the offense, as she recorded a double and drove home six runs.

Following the offense’s hot inception during their opening tenure, the advantage held by the Lady Eagles would continue to gradually grow over time, eclipsing the 10-run mark in the bottom of the second with four more big runs, further securing their victory over Canisteo-Greenwood/Jasper-Troupsburg for good.

In the midst of an offensive explosion, both Mylee Miller and Emalyn Mucher came together to deliver a three-hit performance inside the circle for Fillmore, with Miller scoring the win behind five strikeouts across four shutout innings before she was relieved by Mucher later on, who added a strikeout along the way.

The shutout bid for the hosts was ended in the top of the fifth by Sidney Drouin, who posted an RBI single to bring home the first run for Canisteo-Greenwood/Jasper-Troupsburg.

Aiding in furthering the offense’s cause for the Lady Eagles was Summer Friedl, who had two hits, including a double, and two RBI. Tenlee Miller had two more hits of her own to pair with four more RBI. Oakley Frazier (double) and Kylee Ellsworth helped round off the bats with two hits each.

Fillmore is right back on their home field tonight with a 5 p.m. visit from defending Class D State Finalist Friendship/Scio — winners of four straight games.

ADDISON — Whether you employ the special team efforts right out of the starting gate to set the tone, or transition it to the end of a close battle when you need it most, one thing is for certain: Baserunning is king.

In the midst of a near game-long pitcher’s duel between Wellsville’s Karson Grover and Addison’s star southpaw Andrew Jones on Thursday, the runs assembled off the production line were going to be rare to come by. The Lions would go one step ahead of the host Knights after the first inning of play, holding the advantage within their possession for the foreseeable future.

From that point forward, it was centered on playing with the lead intact.

With Addison chasing after their coattails, the Lions needed more insurance to keep them out of reach. Still up by one run going into the last two innings, the baserunning high-jump kicked into high gear, the visitors in black and orange searched for that perfect moment to jackhammer their way through the hosts in maroon.

How about two steals of home?

In the last two innings of play, the red hot Lions brewed up a magical concoction around the bases. That being a steal on home plate in both the sixth and seventh innings to account for two major pieces of insurance — runs they desperately needed after the Knights responded with a pair of runs to close the gap behind them to one. Despite it, Trenton Green came through the clutch in relief of Grover to slam the door shut on Addison to claim their ninth win in their first 10 games of the campaign with a 5-4 edge.

“We were having a difficult time, the Jones pitcher was really dealing tonight,” Lions coach Tom Delahunt said. “We were able to get on base a couple of times and scratch out a couple runs against him. This was a Sectional-like feel facing a tough team with a tough pitcher. With some baserunning, it was a very good game to have and to be in situations like this. It was pretty tense in the seventh when they got the two runs, but both offensively and defensively, we had to come through and make plays to earn this win.”

Pacing the first outing of attack for Wellsville (9-1) and their 2-0 lead was Alex Green, who assisted in breaking the ice with a big smack to the outfield, which resulted in an RBI double. After Addison responded with a run in the bottom of the first, a scoreless second inning rang out before the offenses assembled a run on each side — the top of the second seeing a Ty Vogel double drive in a run to take a 4-1 lead.

Addison again chipped away by cutting the deficit in half, but the pitcher’s duel would begin to take shape once again between Grover and Jones, as the two hurlers combined to record 18 strikeouts at the plate, seven of them from Grover across four innings before being relieved, while Jones went from the third inning to the end in relief.

For Delahunt, he’s proud of his pitchers and their performances to keep their defensive fire burning.

“Our pitchers did a real nice job,” he said. “Karson gave us four strong innings and he hasn’t done a whole lot of pitching. For him to come out and make big pitches at big times to hold us in there before we turned to Trenton. He pounds the strike-zone just as much, and he was solid again in relief. Both of those guys came through for us when runs were at a premium.”

With the Lions carrying a 3-2 lead going into the sixth inning, it was time for the special teams to punch their way through. After a lead-off walk from Cooper Brockway in the inning, the Wellsville senior went on a robbery spree of the bags in the infield before turning the jets loose on a humongous steal of home plate to branch the advantage to 4-2.

After the defense came up with their final goose egg to hand out to Addison, the Lions would deliver their coup-de-grace — a second steal on home plate with two outs, following back-to-back strikeouts to start the frame. With Aiden Cowburn and his single to left allowed him to steal second and third along the way, Ty Vogel reached base off a walk to set up a runners-on-the-corners game plan.

Wellsville made the most of every bit of it, as they performed the double steal on Addison which allowed Cowburn to score from third base to extend the Lions lead to a much-needed four-run cushion going into the bottom of the seventh. But the Knights could not find the response to counter Wellsville with, as they held down the fort behind a dynamic web-gem play from Cowburn at second base off a ground ball, falling over to his backside in the process of it to make a throw to first and record the out while being briefly immobilized on the ground.

The Lions mustered five runs off five hits on the attack, with Cowburn leading the efforts with his 2-for-4 outing that consisted of a double, two runs scored and four stolen bases. Cooper Brockway stole three more bases to go with his hit. On the mound, the win was Grover’s to carry to the end, as he became the seventh Lions pitcher to record a win on the mound behind his seven-strikeout, two-walk tenure.

Coming up after the weekend, the Lions will mark their return to the diamond back over the road, as they begin preparing for a 5 p.m. road trip up north to visit the Marcus Whitman Wildcats.

CANISTEO — Behind the dynamic complete game performance shelled out by the arm of Canisteo-Greenwood’s Taige Stewart, paired with a rampant first inning start by their bats, the host Chargers were able to strike all chords on the diamond Thursday night with the Eagles of Fillmore in town for a visit, as they galloped their way towards the direction of an 8-2 victory.

In the opening stanza, the Chargers turned the temperature up on Fillmore at an instant, as they caught fire on offense with a five-run stand that ultimately allowed them to set the tone in permanent fashion. With the lead firmly in their possession, the rest of it then laid on the shoulders of Stewart, who set the music with five straight shutout innings to the tune of 10 strikeouts and six walks to earn his win on the mound.

Fillmore (3-2) would manage to work their way onto the board with a score in each of the last two innings of play to eliminate Stewart’s shutout bid. At the end of the night, the Eagles scored two runs off three total hits — two of them off the bat of Nolan Krzeminski, who captained the offensive efforts. Jude Beardsley provided the final hit, pairing it with an RBI while James Hillman chipped in with an RBI of his own.

As for the Chargers, they scored eight runs off 12 total hits on the attack, with Thomas Sirianni leading production with a 3-for-4 outing that included a double and RBI. Joe Mitchell chipped in with two hits and scored twice, while Spencer Berry also had two hits, driving in a pair in the process.

On the mound for Fillmore, Kalen Beardsley came on in the middle of the first inning in relief, fanning three and walking a pair before Brayden Hennard then took the mound to help the pitching staff finish on a strong note with his five strikeouts and one walk across the last two innings.

Coming up tonight back home at the Town Park, the Eagles will look for a bounce back with Friendship/Scio in for a 5 p.m. first pitch.

WELLSVILLE — After shooting his best round of the season the night before against Bolivar-Richburg, Wellsville’s Ethan Bailey followed up with another season-best performance on the links Thursday night against the visiting Addison Knights. Although the senior helped lead the way with his dynamic performance, the Knights were able to play spoiler at the Wellsville Country Club to come away remaining unbeaten with a 176-200 win.

Bailey was at the top of the scorecard for the Lions (3-3) to help pave the way towards another phenomenal performance, scoring a team-low round of 40. Jackson Shoughrue and Noah Brogan each chipped in with rounds of 53, while Fletcher Kaye was not far behind both Lions golfers, adding in his round of 54.

Addison was led by Section V juggernaut Ryan Thompson, who shot the match’s medalist round of 35 to aid in the team’s victory.

The Lions are back on the links Tuesday night with a 4 p.m. road trip to Allegheny Hills in Rushford to take on host Fillmore.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 194, Arkport-Canaseraga 226

HORNELL — Although the match’s medalist round was awarded to host Arkport-Canaseraga’s Sebastian Carroll, it was a even balance up and down the scorecard that propelled Genesee Valley/Belfast to a 3-0 start of their campaign on Thursday at the Hornell Golf Club, as they wedged their way past the Wolves with a 194-226 victory.

For the second straight match, Grant Preston was at tippy-top of the Genesee Valley/Belfast (3-0) scorecard to aid in their road victory, keeping the team’s fire on the links hot behind his team-low round of 44. Following up was Will Guilford and his round of 47. Chris Weaver carded a 49, while Jackson Stout chipped in with his round of 54.

Arkport-Canaseraga was led by Carroll and his medalist round of 37. Behind him was Bryant Reynolds, who scored a 51. Tommy O’Donnell had a 64, while Arthur Miller and Isaiah Morales rounded off with a 74 and 75, respectively.

Genesee Valley/Belfast will go for their fourth straight win in their return to the links on Tuesday, traveling to the Bolivar Golf Club to visit host Bolivar-Richburg at 4 p.m.

BOYS TENNIS

Allegany-Limestone 3, Wellsville 2

WELLSVILLE — Between Allegany-Limestone and Wellsville, each team would record a sweep of each field of action during their Thursday night battle on the tennis court. In what was a 3-2 final result at the end of the night, that would solely belong to the visiting Gators, as they recorded all three victories — two of them in straight sets, across the singles department to hop on the bus and exit town victorious.

The Lions (3-2) saw a pair of wins develop in each doubles match to kick off the match, as the first doubles team of David Anderson and Michael Bidzerkowny both fought tooth and nail against Allegany-Limestone’s Ipshita Patra and Samuel Eaton to pick up a gritty 6-4, 6-4 victory. The second doubles duo of Keenen O’Connor and Caydon Grimes rounded off the wins with a 6-1, 6-2 win over their own right against Sughosh Kondur and Etienne Marais.

In the singles matches, Wheeler Dahlgren gave the fight of his life to hang right alongside Allegany-Limestone’s Tommy Depuy, but ultimately fell in a 7-5 third-set tiebreak in what was a 6-4, 4-6, 7-5 decision. Adam Iantorno (first singles) and Jeremiah Pensyl (second singles) each fell in straight-set defeat in their respective matches.

Wellsville will look to regroup and rebound over the road tonight in a quick turnaround, visiting Campbell-Savona in a 5 p.m. first serve.

BOLIVAR — There were some close-quarter encounters on the tennis court for both Cuba-Rushford and Bolivar-Richburg on Thursday, witnessing several tiebreaks come to full fruition across single competition. In the midst of the dead heat, Anthony Densmore would help the Wolverines in leading the charge after navigating his way through two of them to score the first of the team’s five victories to ignite their 5-0 win over the Rebels at home.

Densmore battled extremely tough in his first singles matchup against Cuba-Rushford’s Ethan Cole, fighting towards a 7-2 decision in the first set tiebreak before the two foes exchanged another in the next, where he garnered the final two points to lay claim on what was a 7-6 (7-2), 7-5 win. Dustin Murray chipped in with a second singles win of his own, clawing past Tyler Findlay in the first set before recording a 6-0 shutout in the last to finish off a 6-4, 6-0 win.

The last singles victory for Bolivar-Richburg (2-0) stemmed from Trevor Whitsell, who battled back and forth with Cuba-Rushford’s Carter Brown at third singles. All three sets were needed to complete the match, with Whitsell overcoming a 6-3 second-set defeat to force a third-set tiebreak in his favor, holding on for the 6-0, 3-6, 7-5 win.

The Wolverines finished off the match sweep in the doubles department with a 6-0, 6-0 blank from Alex Parker and Nebula Wilson-Smith, taking victorious honors over Jadyn Little and Jasmine Roe, while the second doubles team of Starlyn Kisel and Jamie Werner scored a forfeit win.

Up next, Bolivar-Richburg will host the Eagles of Fillmore in a 5 p.m. first serve on Monday, while the Rebels (0-2) hit the road for Andover/Whitesville on Wednesday in a 5 p.m. contest of their own.

Wellsville dominant again with sweep C-R, GV/Belfast, Way-Co in Den

WELLSVILLE — The Wellsville Lions track team is off to a roaring start to their 2024 campaign. After coming face-to-face with some tough competition to kick off their season, the wheels to victory began to churn and on Thursday, they added even more to the win column as both boys and girls squads place first overall in their home meet against Genesee Valley/Belfast, Cuba-Rushford and Wayland-Cohocton.

For the boys team, seven total victories in front of a slew of secondary finishes allowed the Lions to springboard towards a 96-point top finish to lead the pack of competition in the Lion’s Den. Garnering the wins individually were Noah Joslyn, Collin Perkins, Ben Jordan, Xavier Scott and JJ Howard, as Joslyn and Perkins scored wins in the 400 dash and 800 run respectively, while Jordan claimed his win with the quickest time in the 3200 run.

In the hurdling events, Xavier Scott recorded a winning finish in the 110 hurdles, while JJ Howard posted the longest distance in the sand pit by winning the triple jump. Wellsville was able to garner two wins in the relay department, scoring them in the 1600 and 3200.

As for the Lady Lions, they were simply outstanding, posting a meet-high 105 points to outlast Wayland-Cohocton right behind them, as they scored eight total victories to jumpstart their performance. The team was led by another strong sweep of both throwing events from Kaylee Oswald, as she posted winning distances in the shot put and discus events. Five more Lady Lions all chipped in with a win of their own, with Caelyn Stevens (100 dash), Talia O’Connor (400 hurdles), Brooklyn Dahlgren (high jump), Kylie Phelps (triple jump) and Jaden Dunbar (pole vault) all recording gold.

Wellsville was also victorious in just one of the three relay events, as the team of Selah Ader, Jaden Dunbar, Kaylie Fuller and Morgan Mattison converged to deliver a winning time in the 3200 relay.

The Genesee Valley/Belfast boys placed overall, just two points ahead of third place Cuba-Rushford, as they recorded three first place finishes to go with their bundle of secondary finishes. Amongst the winners was Thayne Cobb, who delivered wins in the 100 and 200 dashes — the former of the pair coming just .02 faster than Wellsville’s Xavier Scott to claim the win by the slimmest of edges.

Callahan Tallman had the last victory for the boys team, reaching winning heights in the high jump to score gold. As for the girls team, they placed third overall with 36 points, posting three first place finishes of their own — two of them from Bayleigh Tallman, who placed first in the 400 dash and from the field, in the long jump. Sophie Zillgitt had the team’s last win, crossing the finish line first in the 100 hurdles.

The Cuba-Rushford boys scored a third place finish with 55 points in their back pocket, as they secured four first place finishes in the heat of battle. Pacing the front was Ethan Coleman, who tallied two of those wins from the field, in the long jump and pole vault events. Tristan Clayson added the final individual victory for the Rebels, as he picked up the win in the shot put.

The Rebels also placed first in the 400 relay with the team of Anderson Siegel, Alex Baron, Ethan Coleman and Brock Stadler all recording the win. In the other spectrum of competition, the Lady Rebels scored 20 points and placed fourth overall.

The Wayland-Cohocton boys finished fourth overall with 47 points, claiming wins from Wyatt Mastin (1600 run), Chucky Cibrian (400 hurdles) and Henry Caskey (discus) — the latter of the three events witnessing a degree of separation by just a single inch, as Caskey garnered the winning distance over Cuba-Rushford’s Tristan Clayson.

For the Lady Eagles, they finished second overall with 96 points after recording five first place finishes — two from Celise Wicker in the 800 and 1500 runs to help lead the way. Neveah Byron (200 dash) and Hope Ammarell (3000 run) scored wins of their own to round off the individual triumphs, pairing them with the team’s lone relay victory in the 1600 relay event.

Salamanca brings out brooms in road meet at B-R

BOLIVAR — Over the road at Bolivar-Richburg, the Salamanca Warriors were at their highest level on the track and the field Thursday night, as they took full advantage of their meeting with the host Wolverines and ran away with it to claim a 106-24 and 107-28 victory for both boys and girls squads, respectively.

The Wolverines collected six first place finishes against the Warriors — three from the boys and three from the girls teams, with Calyn Todd’s sweep of both hurdling events leading the way, as he raced to wins in the 110 and 400 hurdles. David Phearsdorf scored the final individual win for the squad with the longest distance in the sand pit to claim gold in the triple jump.

As for the Lady Wolverines, Raegan Giardini, Carmen Crowley and Brena Walp each had a win to help further the cause, with Giardini crossing the finish line first in the 800 run. Crowley and Walp would each record wins from the field, becoming triumphant in their respective events — the discus and triple jump.

Bolivar-Richburg will now begin preparations to partake in Invitational action in Olean, this weekend.
