This season, Fillmore girls soccer and softball head coach Jon Beardsley takes the top honor as Allegany County’s Coach of the Year with the Paul H. Vienna Award. He is joined alongside fellow nominees: Scio boys soccer and boys basketball coach Dillon McFall (left), and Fillmore boys soccer coach Jamie Mullen. Beardsley headed a Lady Eagles squad that finished 18-1-1 on the season with their lone loss coming to Avoca in the State Qualifier game this past fall in the Class D1 championship winning season, their first since 1999. This year’s recipient of the Allegany County Service Award went to longtime Scio softball head coach Irv Newton. He stands alongside the school’s Athletic Director, Doreen Martin. Newton has done it all for the Tigers over the course of three decades. During his tenure, he led his Lady Tigers squads to two County championships, along with two Sectional titles, while being named Section V Coach of the Year along the way. Newton officially hung up the cleats after over 20 years as acting Varsity Softball head coach, as he announced his retirement at school year’s end. [PHOTO PROVIDED]
