Tuesday Roundup: 3-point avalanche, vehement 1st half defense propels Corning to 69-50 victory to spoil Wellsville’s season opener; Lavery nets clutch 4th quarter to aid C-R girls win at And/Whi

WELLSVILLE — For the third time in the last six years, a packed crowd on hand Tuesday night saw a title defense open up the campaign for the third time in the last six seasons.

Defending Class B2 champion Wellsville and their opposition on the docket? — Section IV superpower Corning, led by eighth-grade sniper Nolyn Proudfoot. His presence on the floor was met almost immediately by the Lions. Once he got warm, the temperature would start rising beyond measure.

At a point where his shooting prowess turned into a fiery blitz on the hardwood in the Lion’s Den.

The Corning sharpshooter was lights out from start to finish, as he took charge from every angle. Offense, defense, the glass, you name it. On multiple occasions, the possession was pushed down court. When it was all said and done, his eruption of shots on the attack and a vehement first half front line of defense were two outstanding ingredients that were mixed together for complete success, as the Hawks rolled past Wellsville to spoil their season opener with a 69-50 win.

The electricity would send shockwaves through the air in the game’s opening sequences, as Proudfoot and Cooper Brockway each traded a triple each on their first possessions for their respective games to break the ice. Proudfoot would continue the momentum in Corning’s favor however, catching fire the first time with back-to-back triples with 3:35 left in the quarter to garner a 10-point lead, forcing a Wellsville (0-1) timeout in the same swing.

With the advantage in hand, their attention was now turned to the defense, where they would apply just the right amount of pressure to force multiple turnovers against the Lions to reclaim possession. Despite it, the Hawks lead would come down to seven by the time the first quarter would reach its conclusion, as Karson Grover helped end the frame with a buzzer-beating bank off the board for the Lions.

The lead for Corning would come down to just a single possession behind Ty Vogel’s first of two second quarter triples, but the Hawks would remain on top with another 10-point lead going into the break. In the third quarter, the momentum would remain right with the hosts in black and gold the rest of the way, as their defense returned to form and forced more turnovers against the Lions and cashed in on a bulk of the chances to extend their lead close to 20 points.

All coming from the hot hand of Proudfoot, who finished with 31 points for the Hawks — a performance that included nine of the team’s 13 total three-pointers from downtown. Five more of those in the second half.

Navigating their way to the top of the stat sheet was JJ Howard, who posted a team-high 14 points, including a one-handed jam late in the third quarter. Following behind was Vogel, who concluded with 13 points. Ethan Bailey had 10 points.

The search for a rebound will be on for Wellsville back on their home floor Friday night, as they host the annual IAABO Tournament with an opening-round matchup against the Rebels of Cuba-Rushford starting in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.

In the matchup prior to the nightcap, C.G. Finney and Fillmore will do battle in their contest beginning at 6 p.m. in the Lion’s Den.

Bolivar-Richburg 68, Genesee Valley/Belfast 46

BOLIVAR — All throughout, Genesee Valley/Belfast and Bolivar-Richburg were neck-and-neck on Tuesday. Across the first three quarters of play, it was an offensive dogfight. One that saw the Wolverines take command, but it was never out of reach from Genesee Valley/Belfast at any given point.

But with the visitors in black inching ever so closer to their coattails, the last eight minutes would permit the hosts in cementing the advantage they held for a vast majority of the contest. As for the defense, they would allow just four points to reach the board to finish off the game on the most positive of notes with a 3-0 start to their season, handing Genesee Valley/Belfast their first loss in the same swing with a 68-46 win.

“Despite some of the frustrations we had early on, we rallied around and finished strong against a scrappy team,” Wolverines coach Justin Thomas said. “(Jacob) Borden came out of nowhere as opposed to last year, he is a stud. And you know what you were going to get out of Kyle McCumiskey and Kadin Logue. They got theirs, but thankfully, we clicked on offense and circumvented some things on defense. We did everything we could, and they had an answer for it. That team is on the rise. Lintz (Bliven) does a great job getting his boys ready to go.”

The responses were delivered in back-and-forth transition all game long between the two squads, beginning with Bolivar-Richburg (3-0) and their largest frame of offense coming into full fruition with a 21-17 lead to control. They would add onto their lead once more with another outscoring of the Wolverines on the attack going into the break, keeping Genesee Valley/Belfast in the rearview mirror along the way to claim a 10-point lead.

Despite falling further and further behind, Genesee Valley/Belfast (2-1) never showed one ounce of quit each step of the way, as they kept fighting back to try and trim their deficit down heading into the fourth quarter. But the Wolverines would go on and make the most out of every opportunity in the last eight minutes with a 3-to-1 ratio on the scoreboard to keep their advantage stapled down for good.

That effort was propelled by a 26-point performance from Aydin Sisson, who helped make it all happen. Following behind was a strong three-point presence from Landon Barkley, as he knocked down four of the team’s nine triples, en route to 18 points. Kingston Loucks chipped in with four more of his own to add onto his 14-point effort.

On special teams, Waide Karnuth led the rebound game with seven, while Reiss Gaines had five more boards to collect and five assists. Barkley would also hand out five more assists for Bolivar-Richburg.

For Genesee Valley/Belfast, Jacob Borden led all scorers with his inside presence, garnering 15 team-high points. Ian McKenzie bucketed four of the team’s five triples to put towards his 14 points, while Kadin Logue finished with eight. The team will now wait until this upcoming Monday back home in The Jungle to take the floor again, as they host Campbell-Savona in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.

Bolivar-Richburg will look to make it four straight wins to open their season on Friday, when they visit Friendship/Scio for a 6 p.m. contest in Scio.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Friendship/Scio 42, Bolivar-Richburg 36

FRIENDSHIP — A near triple-double performance from Nevaeh Ross ignited victory for Friendship/Scio back home on Tuesday, as they garnered just enough room in the second half to sprint away from visiting Bolivar-Richburg’s grasp behind the senior’s 13-point, 13-rebound, seven-steal and five-block night from all angles on the floor in their 42-36 edge over the Lady Wolverines in Friendship.

Rebounds were big for Friendship/Scio (2-1), and when they were collected, it gave off a huge burst of momentum. Along with the 13 rebounds for Ross, Grace Drumm was another cog in the rebounding machine for the hosts in white and black, posting 11 more herself to keep the Lady Wolverines off-balance on the attack.

The defense would allow even bigger things for the offense in turn to develop as time progressed, allowing them to lay claim on the lead after the opening eight minutes of play and into the break. Friendship/Scio came back and fired another big punch in the third quarter with their biggest offensive outing of the game, outscoring Bolivar-Richburg (1-2) by a 15-9 count.

Bolivar-Richburg would then take aim and a potential comeback big late in the fourth quarter with their largest stand of offense, all while holding Friendship/Scio to their smallest in the same swing. They would trim the lead down to eight at the end, but it would not be enough to overcome in the end.

Finishing behind Ross for the hosts was Emily Lamberson, who recorded nine points. Drumm would sink a pair of triples, for six points. Morghyn Ross would add some special teams help, garnering six steals.

On the flip side for Bolivar-Richburg, Raegan Giardini led all scorers with nine points. Jaelyn Kinnicutt and Carmen Crowley each had eight points to pitch in. The two foes will meet up once again, this time in Scio for their annual Christmas Tournament next Friday night at 6 p.m.

As for the Lady Wolverines, they will look to regroup with another road trip in store on Thursday, visiting the Lady Eagles of Fillmore in a 7:30 p.m. contest.

Cuba-Rushford 31, Andover/Whitesville 26

ANDOVER — In any close fight to the finish, the game could very well hang in the balance of those small, minute details. For instance, the free throw line. With both Cuba-Rushford and host Andover/Whitesville duking it out until the very last second, something had to most certainly give way for one team.

With a five-point lead and Andover/Whitesville hot on their trail, the Lady Rebels had to start and end it somewhere. Brynn Lavery provided a sound, yet giant response.

In the midst of her game-captaining performance for the visitors in gray and blue, Lavery would go on and score all six of the team’s points in the fourth quarter — all of which was paid in part by an immaculate 6-for-6 outing at the charity stripe, as she finished with 17 points to airlift Cuba-Rushford straight to the top and towards victory that awaited in the end, claiming the 31-26 win over Andover/Whitesville, in Andover.

With a pair of triples helping Cuba-Rushford (1-2) set up shop on offense in the first eight minutes of play, Andover/Whitesville was able to provide a near-identical response to the Lady Rebels, scoring one more point to record a 7-6 lead going into a second quarter where the visitors would flip the script again behind their three-point game.

From beyond the arc, the Lady Rebels found their touch with the help of Lavery and Aubrey Williams, as the two sharpshooters combined to record three more of the team’s triples — two from Lavery herself, to complete an 11-point frame that allowed them to reclaim the 17-13 lead over Andover/Whitesville (1-2) going into the break.

In the second half, it was either team’s game, as Graci Lewis-Ellison hit a three to allow the hosts to remain within reach of Cuba-Rushford in the third quarter. With the momentum beginning to shift every which way between the two clubs, it would be put to rest by Lavery once and for all from the charity stripe, as she posted a perfect six-shot outing to finish off a tough and close Lady Rebels victory over the hosts in white and purple.

Finishing behind Lavery’s game-leading performance was Williams, who finished with seven points. Lily Tompkins had five more points to add in.

Andover/Whitesville was led by Olivia Waters, who fueled the inside game with 11 team-high points. Graci Lewis-Ellison recorded six points, while Grace Fry had five. The team will spring back into action Saturday afternoon with a 1 p.m. visit to Hammondsport.

Cuba-Rushford is back on the road Friday night, as they head below the border to Shinglehouse, Pa. to visit the Oswayo Valley Lady Green Wave in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.

Dansville 52, Canisteo-Greenwood 20

CANISTEO — A 20-point opening eight minutes of play helped make a ton of noise for the Lady Mustangs of Dansville, as six different scorers all recorded at least a bucket in the midst of their game-starting introduction against host Canisteo-Greenwood, using it to jet-fuel their 52-20 triumph over the Lady Chargers on Tuesday in the Canisteo Valley.

The Lady Mustangs buckled down on both ends of the floor for much of the battle that ensued against Canisteo-Greenwood (1-1), posting a humongous 20-6 first quarter run that set the bar on offense, while the defense pinned the Lady Chargers against their pressure, limiting them to just a trio of shots from the field.

Among the leading letterwinners to carve the path towards victory for Dansville was Kali Meyer, who led an all-balanced Lady Mustangs attack with a game-high 13 points.

For the Lady Chargers, Bailey Mullen recorded 11 team-high points, pairing them with six rebounds and four steals. On special teams, Harlie McCaffery provided a presence off the backboard, grabbing six rebounds.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Wellsville 3, Friendship/Scio 1

WELLSVILLE — Through a fast start in the night’s opening set, the Lions of Wellsville were in bounce back mode after opening the season with a 3-1 defeat to the hands of Arkport/Canaseraga over the road back on Friday. Back home on Tuesday, they would advance forward and do just that, as they flipped the script and recorded a 3-1 win of their own over Friendship/Scio, 25-11, 25-18, 22-25, 25-9.

Xavier Scott led the Lions (1-1) to big heights on offense with a strong performance on the front line, garnering seven kills to pair with seven aces and a pair of blocks. Brody Heaney chipped in with his team-leading eight kills to go with two aces, while Lucius Griggs followed with four kills and two aces to aid Wellsville’s effort, which saw six of the set’s first seven points go their way to set the pace.

Friendship/Scio (0-2) was fronted by Lawson Ector on the attack, collecting a team-high 12 kills. Eli Wade chipped in with nine service points and four assists to hand out. The team will return to action back home in Scio on Thursday with a 6 p.m. visit from Bolivar-Richburg.

Coming up on Friday, Wellsville will hit the road for a 6 p.m. visit down the road to Genesee Valley/Belfast.

Cuba-Rushford 3, Bolivar-Richburg 1

RICHBURG — A 25-18 decision was traded between both Cuba-Rushford and Bolivar-Richburg across the first two sets of play, with the Wolverines providing a game-tying response in the second set.

But the momentum they had built marching forward was erased by the Rebels completely in the remaining two sets left to play, Tuesday night. When it was all said and done, some big help at the service line by both Coen Kellogg and Anderson Siegel furthered Cuba-Rushford’s victorious cause to capture the four-set victory on the road by a 25-18, 18-25, 25-10, 25-19 count.

Siegel organized a strong night of service from the back line to help fuel Cuba-Rushford’s (2-0) offense, as he posted a team-high seven aces to go with three digs and a kill. Kellogg would follow suit with five big assists up front to pair alongside four additional aces for the visitors, who used a massive 25-10 third-set win to keep the momentum in their favor until the end.

Dustin Murray propelled the Bolivar-Richburg (0-2) offense with six kills, pairing them with three blocks and two assists. Owen Unfus was at the front of the net handing out helpers, scoring 10 assists to go with two kills and two more aces of his own. The Wolverines are back on the floor Thursday night with a 6 p.m. visit to Friendship/Scio.

The Rebels are back home Friday night to welcome in the Eagles of Fillmore for a 6 p.m. first serve.

WRESTLING

Wellsville 57, Fillmore/Keshequa 15

FILLMORE — Out of the 10 total victories that they were able to garner on the mat, Paul Giovanniello started the night red hot for the Wellsville Lions to open the new campaign over the road against Fillmore/Keshequa, scoring the team’s quickest pin in the first match at 108 pounds to help set up shop for what formulated into a 57-15 victory in Fillmore.

At 108 pounds, Giovanniello assisted in starting the match for Wellsville with the first of three straight victories, as he worked his way towards a rapid pinfall victory of Fillmore/Keshequa’s Jules Cotton. After a Jensen Spicer forfeit win at 116 pounds, David Clark capped off a 15-0 start for the Lions with a close 6-3 decision over Alivia Cartwright.

A short time later, Fillmore/Keshequa got on the board with back-to-back victories from Ryan Vedder (131 pounds) and Graham Howe (138 pounds), with Vedder scoring a big 10-4 decision over Wellsville’s Adam Iantorno, while Howe posted the quickest pinfall win of the evening by rolling up Mason Edwards in just 38 seconds to collect the win.

From that point forward, the Lions would propel forward and bolster their advantage over Fillmore/Keshequa with seven straight victories — four of them via forfeit, as Landon Stratton (152 pounds), Matt Ritter (160 pounds), Jonah McCartney (172 pounds) and Gabe Black (215 pounds) all recorded victories.

Jack Cicirello (145 pounds), Xander Outman (190 pounds) and Brayden Taggert (285 pounds) all scored pinfall wins deep in the second period of their respective matches to cement Wellsville’s win for good. For Fillmore/Keshequa, the match would end on a positive note at 101 pounds, as Connor McCumiskey picked up a pinfall win of his own over Easton Joyce.

“I felt we battled hard in the contested matches. Wellsville is just a year or two ahead of where we are as a program, in terms of experience. They have some tough kids that wrestled well,” said Fillmore/Keshequa coach Jarrett Vosburg. “Ryan Vedder, Graham Howe and Connor McCumiskey picked up our wins on the night, with Ryan winning by decision and Connor and Graham picking up wins. Overall, it’s a good start for our dual meet schedule before we head to Arkport this weekend.”

Both teams will return to the mat next week, as Wellsville heads back home to host Arkport/Canaseraga in their home opener at 6 p.m. next Tuesday, while Fillmore/Keshequa travels to visit Campbell-Savona next Wednesday at 6 p.m.

BOYS SWIMMING

Wellsville 92, Campbell-Savona 84

CAMPBELL — Times were recorded and points were traded left and right amongst Wellsville and Campbell-Savona on Tuesday in a meet where the final result remained ever so high up in the air all throughout the night.

But after a rapid start allowed them to grab the first-hand advantage on the host Panthers out of the gate, the Lions of Wellsville would wind up using nine first place finishes to counterattack Campbell-Savona’s multiple secondary finishes in the water to proclaim victory for the second time on the young season, as they exited town with a narrow 92-84 decision.

“The boys pulled off a close one. Going up against a team with double our numbers was really tough,” said Lions coach Steve Hand. “Again, it was a complete team effort to get the win tonight. The team is swimming a lot of yards early on, and we’re still posting some fast times. Ben (Jordan) looked strong in his races, Eli (Brophy) and Thomas (Cooke) are still finding their pace, but going fast while doing it. It’s great to see the Sectional cuts continue to keep coming in.”

Three different Lions (2-0) swimmers all recorded a pair of first place finishes to pave the lane towards success, with Ben Jordan leading the swimming pride with his victories in the 50 freestyle (24.44) and the 100 breaststroke (1:06.82). Ethan Crandell chipped in with top finishes of his own right in the 200 freestyle (2:12.61) and 100 freestyle (57.92), while Eli Brophy placed first in the 200 individual medley (2:32.45) and 100 butterfly (1:07.87).

The Lions would gather one more individual win from Tyler Rahr off the Diving board, as he compiled 172.05 points for the win. Wellsville also garnered two relay victories out of the three relay events, collecting gold in the 200 medley (1:59.06) to start the meet against the Panthers, and later on, a first place finish in the 200 freestyle relay (1:50.05) in the second half.

On Friday, Wellsville is back home to welcome in the Addison Knights in a 5:30 p.m. first swim.
