Friday Roundup: Lavery goes off for Lady Rebels, nets season-high 23 points to set tone in 40-21 rebounding win at GV/Belfast; Fillmore wards off B-R to move to 9-0, Houghton boys downed at C-S

BELMONT — It was Brynn Lavery’s world, and everyone was living in it on Friday.

The Cuba-Rushford senior exploded right from the very beginning of the contest against host Genesee Valley/Belfast, as she finished with a season-high 23-point performance to aid the Lady Rebels back into the win column following a tough defeat to Andover/Whitesville previously on Wednesday, scoring a 40-21 turnaround victory.

Lavery’s reign of terror from all angles on the floor began in the opening eight minute session for the Lady Rebels (8-6), as she accounted for all nine of the team’s points, including her first of four three-pointers, to set up an early 9-5 lead of Genesee Valley/Belfast. The two foes would trade an eight-point second quarter on each side, which would allow the visitors in blue and gray to maintain possession of their advantage at the break.

Later on in the third quarter, Lavery re-assumed command of the Cuba-Rushford offense, applying perfection with her fourth and final three-pointer to couple alongside an immaculate 4-for-4 outing at the charity stripe. That, in the midst of what was a 12-4 run of Genesee Valley/Belfast (7-6) to help finish off their victory in resounding fashion.

Finishing behind Lavery for the Lady Rebels was Kendall Tompkins, who recorded eight points. Lily Tompkins had six points, while Lily Farwell rounded off with an inside bucket. For the hosts in white, Whitney Young, Ava Aronson and Jenna Hill all led the way with five points each. Genesee Valley/Belfast will hit the road for a 6 p.m. stop up in Warsaw on Tuesday.

Cuba-Rushford will continue their road swing Wednesday night with a 7:30 p.m. visit not far from home in Friendship to battle host Friendship/Scio.

C.G. Finney 49, Canisteo-Greenwood 42

ROCHESTER — The Lady Chargers of Canisteo-Greenwood nearly provided a momentous puncture in the second half with a third quarter breakthrough to claw their way back from behind against host C.G. Finney on Friday. But a fast and furious first quarter start put on by the Lady Falcons ultimately became the difference maker at the end of the night, as they held off their opposition to secure the 49-42 edge.

The opening eight minute period was the period that set the bar across all 32 minutes of play, as the Lady Falcons used a magnificent balanced effort on the attack while limiting Canisteo-Greenwood (8-4) from the inside on the opposite end on defense to set up what came to be an 18-6 lead of the Lady Chargers.

After a near-even trade of exchanges in the second quarter, the visitors in red and black provided a big rebound to attempt a closure of the gap between them and the Lady Falcons, as they set their sights on the outside perimeter once again with three big triples in the third quarter — two off the hand of MacKenna Mullen, to help produce a game-high 15-point period — a 15-7 run of C.G. Finney in total, to trail 34-28 going into the last eight minutes.

The Lady Chargers manage to garner enough momentum to claim their first lead in the fourth quarter, but a clutch 5-for-6 combined outing at the charity stripe from both Allie Frederickson and Kate Frederickson, along with a couple of monster three-pointers from Lainey Vargas and Kiley Knittle, allowed the hosts in white and green to fully regain and secure the lead for good to score the victory.
