Monday Roundup: Lions stymied by scorching hot Huskies, as 2nd quarter run, 15 3-pointers headline 81-57 road defeat; GVB girls, Houghton boys split twinbill
OLEAN — Wellsville head coach Raymie Auman knew what his Lions squad was prepared to go up against. A powerhouse to the high school basketball scene for so long not only in Section VI, but in New York State itself — the Olean Huskies, perhaps their toughest contest of the season.
The road trip was made off to the West on Monday to start the final week of the regular season to square off with a 16-1 Huskies team that has simply not lost a beat all year long. They wouldn’t manage to lose it on their home floor, with the forecast on the hardwood calling for the umbrellas.
Simply put: The Huskies made it rain.
Olean poured it on after battling with Wellsville right out of the gate, as they used a massive second quarter run fueled by their phenomenal three-point game, hitting 15 in all, 10 of them off the hand of junior sharpshooter Jack DeRose, who broke the school record for his incredible individual effort from long range to net a game-high 40 points in the team’s 81-57 rout of the Lions.
DeRose started the downpouring right away for the Huskies, countering a well-balanced Lions (10-8) offense through the opening eight minutes, as he scored 13 of Olean’s 17 points in the quarter to give them the narrow lead early on.
In the second quarter however, a reversal, as multiple different Huskies behind DeRose handed in efforts of their own to provide a balanced attack of their doing, tallying a game-high 31 points to pace a 31-9 first half-ending run to extend their lead ultimately for good to distance themselves from Wellsville’s grasp.
Despite falling behind rather quickly at the end of the first half, the Lions still used their balanced offensive front to their advantage in the second half, recording two more strong efforts to continue chipping away at the Huskies, including a 19-point fourth quarter that saw them outscore their opposition to close out the contest.
But in the end, the second quarter run provided by the hosts was more than enough for them to hang on for victory.
Leading the offense for Wellsville was Logan Dunbar, who connected with a team-high 16 points. Cody Costello chipped in with 13 points, while Alex Perkins and Eli Schmidt each recorded nine.
The Lions will wrap up their regular season back home on Thursday with a 6:30 p.m. visit planned from the Archbishop Walsh Eagles.

Houghton Academy 48, Genesee Valley 30
HOUGHTON — Hugo Huang had a strong night from the field, as his breakout performance on offense helped fuel a first half run for Houghton Academy that gave them the lead, ultimately for good, as they pulled away toward their first win in over two weeks with a 48-30 home win over Genesee Valley on Monday.
The Panthers (4-10) created enough room to work in the opening half to grab the lead that would eclipse double digits right before the half reached its conclusion, garnering a 12-5 lead before branching it out to 14 while holding Genesee Valley to just two points in the second quarter.
The 21-7 halftime lead for the hosts was kept in tact, despite the Jaguars (3-15) providing their two best stanzas of offense to keep pace down the stretch. But in the end, Houghton Academy would prevail behind a fantastic night from Huang, who nailed four of the team’s six three-pointers on his way to a season-high 24 points. Malachi DeGolyer had 12 points, while James Adenuga led the boards with nine.
For Genesee Valley, Morgan Torrey led all scorers with a team-high eight points. Ryan Daciw chipped in with five points of his own.

Cuba-Rushford 58, Hinsdale 38
CUBA — After both teams went back and forth through the first eight minutes of play, which saw Cuba-Rushford take a one-point lead, the chance to come alive would come soon after.
Enter Braeden Wight, who had arguably the best night of his career for the Rebels, as the sophomore struck from all angles of the floor to provide a hot second quarter for the offense, in the midst of what was a 21-7 run of the visiting Bobcats of Hinsdale to pull away at halftime to ultimately pick up a 58-38 victory in the Wighthouse on Monday.
“We started out really slow, and then we settled in about halfway through the first quarter. We have to start games faster, and become locked in early,” said Rebels coach Bryce Ryan. “Give Hinsdale credit, they hit some tough shots, but Braeden was fantastic. I was really happy for him. He just plays with high basketball IQ and took what the defense gave him. It’s fun to see his confidence grow. We still have a ton to clean up in time for Fillmore. Hopefully we can put together a good game plan for that one.”
Both the Bobcats and Rebels used a balanced offensive effort to fuel the first quarter of action right out of the gate, a frame that saw the hosts in white and blue grab the narrow upper hand with a 13-12 lead. That would create momentum for the Cuba-Rushford (10-8) offense to come to life with their game-changing run to end the opening half.
Led by Wight, the Rebels held the Bobcats to just seven more points while they broke away towards a 15-point halftime lead of Hinsdale (1-14), as the sophomore shooter recorded 14 of the team’s 21 points within the frame to ignite the charges, and setting up shop for a tight second half that would keep the hosts in front until the finish.
Wight would finish with a career-high 24 points. Finishing behind him was Jacob Smith, Jack Frank and Dom Bello, as they each recorded seven points.
Hinsdale was led by Sam Cashimere who tallied a team-high 13 points, while Henry Schwartz nailed three of the team’s five three-pointers on his way to an 11-point effort. The Bobcats head back home to welcome in Bolivar-Richburg for a 6 p.m. contest this evening.
Cuba-Rushford’s regular season will close out on Wednesday right back on their home floor in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off against the Fillmore Eagles.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 35, Houghton Academy 24
HOUGHTON — The Lady JagDogs of Genesee Valley/Belfast continue to work their way toward a strong end to their season heading into Sectionals, as they complete the back-to-back sweep of Houghton Academy with a road win on Monday, taking down the Lady Panthers by a 35-24 count after a strong first half.
Genesee Valley/Belfast (15-4) came out of the gates furiously against Houghton Academy, as the offense provided a solid lead that was built on through the course of the first half, while the defense on the opposite end of the floor, held the Lady Panthers to just four points in 16 minutes.

Houghton Academy would mount a late comeback in the second half to put the pressure on the Lady JagDogs late, but the first half deficit would wind up being too much to overcome in the end.
