Friday Roundup: Wolverines capture Allegany County Title with clean sweep behind multiple 1st place finishes; Fri/Scio completes comeback behind dominant relief appearance from Davenport

WELLSVILLE — Nearly one week removed from the biggest track and field meet of the season, it came with the regular season's final meet before the run towards Sectionals officially kicks into gear – the Allegany County Championships.

All six of the County's teams met in one place at one time in the Lion's Den on Friday to determine who would be crowned the best of the best.

At the end of it all, it was the Bolivar-Richburg Wolverines that came out on top as this year's Allegany County Champions, as the boys and girls squads collected multiple first place finishes to pave the way towards 179 and 163-point efforts, while Fillmore and Genesee Valley/Belfast rounded off the Top 3.

The Wolverines were led by Rudy Polk on the boys squad, who continues to have an incredible season in both fields of action, garnering four County titles in all by scoring first place wins in the 100 dash, 200 dash, long jump and triple jump. Hunter Stuck added to the cause with three County titles of his own, winning in the 800 sprint, 110 hurdles and 400 hurdles.

Continuing the winning ways for Bolivar-Richburg, was Lloyd Kinnicutt who provided a sweep of both throwing events with winning distances in the shot put and discus, while Ethan Coleman rounded off with a pair of wins of his own coming in the 400 sprint and pole vault.

As for the Lady Wolverines, they recorded seven total first place finishes to pace their triumphant day, with Kori Thomas and Laila Knight each leading the charge behind two victories, with Thomas sweeping both hurdling events – the 100 and 400 hurdles, while Knight brought out the brooms in both throwing events, garnering winning distances in the shot put and discus.

Rounding out the individual wins were: Raegan Giardini in the 1500 run, Nadia Baldwin in the long jump and Brena Walp in the triple jump, as they all recorded County championships to go with the 18 total the team would collect when it was all said and done.

Fillmore would place second overall with nine first place finishes between both teams, with the Lady Eagles collecting a 109-point second place finish behind a sweep of all three relays – the 400, 1600 and 3200 relays. Individually, Rachel Hatch and Grace Russell became champions on the track, recording winning times in the 200 dash and 3000 run respectively.

On the boys side, Matt Majoros and Eli Strickland took care of business on the track themselves, garnering winning placings in the 1600 and 3200 runs each, while the two ran winning legs in the team's victorious 1600 and 3200 relays.

Genesee Valley/Belfast came together to ignite a third place finish with three combined first place finishes and multiple secondary finishes fueling their 71-point finish for the boys team, and a 55-point finish for the ladies. For the boys, Jonathan Webb-Aylor was the lone JagDog who earned himself a County title with a winning title in the Steeplechase. On the other side, Sophie Zillgitt and Alicia Borden grabbed first place wins for the Lady JagDogs in the 800 sprint and high jump, respectively.

The Cuba-Rushford boys squad placed fourth with 47 total points, grabbing just one win from their winning 400 relay squad, as the team of Brayden Lavery, Alex Baron, Anderson Siegel and Hunter Rix all became County champions. The Lady Rebels would finish fifth overall with 21 points.

The Friendship/Scio girls and boys teams would collect fourth and fifth place finishes with 37, and 30 points each.

Rounding off was Houghton Academy, who placed sixth overall behind just one County championship from Nicole Torraca and the Lady Panthers squad, as she recorded the winning time in the 100 dash.

BASEBALL

Wellsville 14, Cuba-Rushford 2 (F-6)

CUBA — Just days removed off of Logan Dunbar's best game of the season for the Lions of Wellsville, the junior followed it up with another performance of high capacity once again.

With an early lead in hand against the host Rebels, Dunbar and the Lions broke the game wide open with one of his two big RBI blasts while Jere Havens tossed a magnificent game on the mound to power up a 14-2 win over Cuba-Rushford in six innings on the road, Friday night.

The victory for the Lions to conclude their regular season would officially mark this season of the winning stature for first-year head coach Tom Delahunt, as the team now heads into the tournament with a record of 11-9 overall.

As to how the Lions were able to power up a strong finish, it would start by conducting 11 straight runs at the plate, with the first three coming in the top half of the second led by some special teams play around the bases.

But the bats would come alive shortly after, as they set the tone immediately with an eight-run top half of the third led by Dunbar, who blasted a game-changing, bases-clearing three-run double to the outfield to give the Lions the room they needed to keep Cuba-Rushford (8-11) out of their reach for good.

Dunbar would also add an RBI double in the team's final series of at-bats in the top of the sixth, finishing off his four RBI day during his 3-for-4 outing at the plate. Alex Green would drive in three RBI of his own off two hits. On the mound, Havens was dominant across his start for Wellsville, fanning eight to record the victory.

As for the Rebels, they were able to erase the shutout bid put on by the Lions with both of their runs coming in the home half of the fifth, led by an RBI from Austin Pinney. He would finish with two of the team's five total hits at the plate, with Caleb Root adding a hit and scoring one of the runs along the way.

On the mound, Jack Frank went four innings, tallying four walks in his start. The Rebels will look to rebound and finish their regular season strong this afternoon with a 12 p.m. first pitch against Canisteo-Greenwood/Jasper-Trouspburg over the road in Canisteo.

Wellsville will now await Sectional seeding in the Class B2 bracket this weekend, as they get set to begin their title defense.

Wellsville 038 003 – 14 10 0

Cuba-Rushford 000 020 – 2 5 5

C-R – Jack Frank (LP) (4BB), Benson McCumiskey (3), Jon White (5) (BB), and Caleb Root, Sam Grover (4).

Friendship/Scio 11, Hammondsport 8

HAMMONDSPORT — The Friendship/Scio boys saw Hammondsport spring out of the gates fast and furiously to start one of their final road trips of the season on Friday.

Right in the first at-bats for the host Lakers, they immediately found their groove with a huge lead. But after a change on the mound for the visitors in black and gold, a massive shift in momentum would occur.

After Ethan Davenport was given the ball to take control for Friendship/Scio, he would deliver incredibly, as he held Hammondsport down for the next six innings with a shutout in relief, fanning a season-high 18 batters while the offense chipped away at the Lakers lead, eventually overcoming it in the fifth to complete the comeback of the season by an 11-8 count.

“Credit to the bats coming alive after Hammondsport started quickly. We never put our heads down and we never gave up,” said Friendship/Scio coach Brad Gertis. “We stayed positive the whole game, and when Ethan came on, he was able to keep them where he wanted them and we just chipped away. He was on his game, he had all his stuff and he was just rolling.”

The comeback for Friendship/Scio (7-11) came alive after Hammondsport took an 8-0 lead right after the first inning. From the second inning on, the visitors would go on to score 10 unanswered as their response to the Lakers, with four of them coming in the top of the fourth to cut their deficit down to a single run.

It would eventually come to its completion in the next inning, where they scratched across three additional runs in the fifth to overtake the Lakers in the driver's seat, ultimately holding their position until the final pitch was thrown to complete an epic and miraculous comeback to win the game.

Behind what was an 11-run, 10-hit offensive effort, Davenport played a pivotal role for Friendship/Scio on defense, coming on in relief to score five straight strikeouts on his way towards a career evening, fanning 18 Hammondsport hitters in all to help secure the victory.

At the plate, Cooper Greenman led the bats with a 3-for-4 outing and three RBI. Davenport would add two hits of his own including a triple, and scored four runs.

Friendship/Scio's regular season will come to a close this morning with one final road trip, visiting the Hinsdale Bobcats in an 11 a.m. first pitch.

Genesee Valley/Belfast 19, Hinsdale 6

HINSDALE — The final road trip of the season for the JagDogs of Genesee Valley/Belfast was one that they were able to collect a fast start from in the first three innings and build on it, ultimately putting the momentum towards a big finish in the seventh to pull away from Hinsdale's grasp on Friday with a 19-6 triumph.

The JagDogs (9-10) offense hit all strides from start to finish by collecting 19 total runs off 14 total hits, with three different hitters recording at least a pair of hits. Two of them, Matt Weaver and Carter Stout, both led the way with a pair of home runs that would put the hammer down on Hinsdale almost immediately.

With a 7-0 lead against the Bobcats through the first three innings of play, Stout would get on the board in the fourth with his solo bomb to the outfield to branch out their lead before Weaver provided a two-run blast of his own in the next inning to help eclipse the double digit mark for the game.

Hinsdale (1-12) was able to chip away at their deficit with six consecutive runs of their own down the stretch, getting to within five at the most of Genesee Valley/Belfast, but the JagDogs offense came together one final time in the seventh inning to pull away, scoring their remaining eight runs to finish off their final regular season road win.

Helping the cause alongside both Weaver and Stout on offense was Jesse Babbitt, who had two hits of his own to go with two runs scored. Owen Heaney chipped in with a hit and scored twice. On the mound, the win was Thai Norasethaporn's to collect, as he fanned eight and walked two in his four-inning start for the visitors.

Ethan Cashimere struck out four and walked five in his four-inning start on the other side for the Bobcats.

Both teams will put an end to their regular seasons this morning beginning in 11 a.m. first pitches, as Genesee Valley/Belfast will look to close out their slate strong with a visit from Alfred-Almond, while Hinsdale remains at home to host Friendship/Scio.

SOFTBALL

Class C2 First Round

No. 9 Cuba-Rushford 12, No. 8 Warsaw 7

WARSAW — The Sectional chase is officially on.

For the Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford, they were the first to get their second season started, traveling over the road to face off against the host Lady Tigers of Warsaw in a 9/8 matchup that saw plenty of offensive action across all seven innings.

In the midst of the fight, the nine seeds had to claw their way back from an early 5-2 lead garnered by the Lady Tigers. If there was a better time to bring everything all together, it would be come down the homestretch.

That's exactly how Cuba-Rushford won the game.

After four complete innings and time running out on their season, the Lady Rebels would rebound in one of the biggest ways possible, scoring 10 of the game's last 12 runs in the final three innings of play to eliminate Warsaw from Sectional contention with a 12-7 road victory on Friday.

“This is an amazing group of girls that I have loved to coach this season. They are a group that always plays hard, they never give up. I am so proud of the way they were able to come back to grab us this win tonight. I think they like to wait until the last minute to get their hitting going, but I'm glad that they did.” said Lady Rebels coach Diana Joseph.

The Lady Rebels (6-11), despite falling behind Warsaw soon after, were able to get their bats going in their first visit to the plate, scoring a 2-0 lead with one swing of the bat from Aubrey Williams, who drove in a pair on a double into the outfield.

In turn, the Lady Tigers would come right back with some offense of their own in the next two innings of play, scoring five unanswered led by some key baserunning and a massive RBI hit of their own, collecting a triple in the third inning to grow their lead to three before the defenses buckled in for a scoreless fourth inning of play.

With time running out on potentially their final game of the season, the Lady Rebels were granted a second chance at the plate. And it was one they would not let go to waste, as they posted a seven-run fifth inning led by four RBI hits, beginning with an RBI single from Elysa Tylor to trim their deficit down.

Riley Keller and Laney Murphy would follow for the visitors in gray and blue with the game-tying and go-ahead RBI hits moments later themselves, with Keller blasting a two-run single to tie the game at five before Murphy extended their stay on offense with a two-run double to the outfield that would essentially give them the lead for good. Sydney Howard would end the offensive stand with one final RBI knock, scoring one off a double.

After Warsaw knocked back down the Cuba-Rushford lead to 9-7, the Lady Rebels put the cap on the game in the last two innings, engineering runs off errors and baserunning before Meghan O'Keefe put it away in the seventh with one last two-run hit to finish off what was a 15-hit effort for the offense.

Murphy and O'Keefe, who bat eighth and ninth in the lineup for the Lady Rebels, led the offense with three hits each, while Tylor and Keller followed with a pair of hits themselves. On the mound, the win was given to Jordyn Radomski in relief, as she fanned four during her four-inning tenure in the circle.

Cuba-Rushford now moves into the Class C2 Quarterfinal round, which will begin after the weekend on Monday, as they now take a road trip up north to visit top-seeded Oakfield-Alabama at a time to be determined.

Cuba-Rushford 200 071 2 – 12 15 5

Warsaw 023 020 0 – 7 7 2

C-R – Sydney Howard (3K, BB), Jordyn Radomski (WP, 4) (4K), and Riley Keller.

WAR – Madeline Burger (LP) (3K, 10BB), Purdy (6) (K), and Kaylee Herrmann.
