Tuesday Roundup: Hall nets fourth 40+ point game of season, becomes newest member of Whitesville’s 1K-point club in 74-19 home win over Friendship

WHITESVILLE — Vanessa Hall is having a season to remember for the Lady Jays of Whitesville. In three games of the team’s four games already this season, the sophomore has recorded at least 40 points or more. Tuesday night, she made it four games but this was a special one, as she scored an even game-high 40 points to surpass the 1,000 career point mark in their 74-19 home win over Friendship.

“Vanessa is a great player,” Lady Jays coach Aaron Rawady said. “She's shown that every time she's stepped on the court. She's been working on her game year round since she was in elementary school, so it's no surprise to me that she's achieved this milestone. I'm very proud of her, and what stands out about tonight is at the end of the game, when she was on the bench, she was cheering for her teammates every possession. It was a special night for her, yet she was being one of her teammates' biggest fans.”

Kennedy Bledsoe helped the cause with 11 points of her own to help pace the Lady Jays (5-0) offense. Rachel Jackson had nine points, while Serena Ainsworth and Aislinn Hamilton both had six.

Wellsville 44, Bolivar-Richburg 20

WELLSVILLE — In the last meeting between the Lady Wolverines and Lady Lions back at the beginning of the month, both teams were missing key players for their season-opening game. But on Tuesday for their final clash of the season, both teams were at full strength.

One of those missing pieces that did not play the first time around, was Wellsville’s rising star in Marley Adams, who was one of three Lady Lions who eclipsed the 10-point mark on the offense, while provided spectacular defense on the other side of the court, as he presence ignited a second half fire that allowed them to pull away from Bolivar-Richburg toward victory, garnering it by a 44-20 count.

“Obviously the difference between the first game and this one is having Marley and Emily (Robbins) back,” said Lady Lions coach Michelle Alvord. “Marley's definitely a game changer, and she's a big time player. She surrounds the others with confidence, and on offense, she creates so much for everyone. On defense, we didn't defend (Aliyah) Cole differently, but it was much better than the first time. The girls are all playing well, and everyone is unselfish. There were times we were stagnant, but credit to them, I'm really impressed.”

The Lady Lions (4-2) got off to a first quarter lead out of the gate, going up by nine. But in the second, a slow moving quarter allowed the Lady Wolverines to cut the deficit down to six heading into the break. Despite their lead being trimmed, Wellsville was able to put together their strongest run of the night to pull away, gathering up a 12-4 run in the third quarter before putting together one final run in the last eight minutes.

Adams led all scorers on the floor alongside Kaylee Coleman, as they each scored a game-high 13 points along with six rebounds in addition. Emily Costello pitched in 11 more points to go with three steals and three assists. Jaylynn Mess led the rebounding department for the hosts with nine.

On the other side, McKinlee Harris led the way with a team-high six points. Jianna Nix had four points.

In JV action before the game, Wellsville defeated Bolivar-Richburg by a 47-7 count.

Both teams are back on their home floors Thursday night in 7:30 p.m. contests, as Wellsville prepares to welcome in Cuba-Rushford, while Bolivar-Richburg takes on Andover.

Fillmore 35, Andover 24

ANDOVER — Down by five after posting their best quarter of the game heading into the fourth, the Lady Panthers of Andover had a chance to build upon it. But the Lady Eagles of Fillmore ran the table, as they accounted for their biggest run to pull away from any danger of their lead being lost, as they picked up the 35-24 victory over the road, Tuesday night.

To get the job done, Fillmore (4-2) used a balanced scoring attack with Jadyn Mucher leading the way behind a perfect 4-for-4 outing at the charity stripe in her team-high nine point performance. Morgan Byer sank a pair of three pointers, and Emma Cole dug down low to deliver, as they each scored eight points to follow. But despite it, the Lady Rebels of Cuba-Rushford returned home victorious, as they held onto the final string right down to the wire to pick up their first victory of the season by a 33-31 count over the host Lady Panthers.

“It was finally nice to grab our first win after putting forth a ton of hard work to get it,” said Lady Rebels coach Aaron Wight. “Franklinville made a good run in the fourth quarter against us, and it provided a good lesson for the girls as far as learning how to play with a lead late in the game.”

BOYS BASKETBALL

Andover 63, Friendship 40

FRIENDSHIP — Falling behind early in a first quarter deficit, the Panthers of Andover had to act quickly over the road, Tuesday night. They would do just that, prying the lead away from the host Golden Eagles heading into the break.

The momentum would remain in their favor on their return back out to the court, with thanks from another big effort from their senior leader Spencer Cook, who was on fire most of the night with his game-high 27 points to lead Andover toward victory by a 63-40 count to take the season sweep of Friendship.

Cook’s impact was made right from the start, as he provided the majority of Andover’s (3-2) points in the second quarter by netting 10 of the team’s 12 in their 12-5 run of Friendship to take a 28-24 lead heading into the break. He had 18 of his 27 points come in the first half in total.

In the second half, the nail in the coffin was driven downward by the visitors in purple, as Cook along with a pair of Brody Carlin three-pointers helped ignite the team’s biggest spurt of offense against the Golden Eagles, locking up a 16-5 third quarter run to essentially put the game on ice. Finishing behind Cook in the Panthers scorebook was Chris Walker, who had 12 points. In addition to his three-pointers, Carlin would finish with 11.

Friendship (0-4) was led by Ian Romero, who had the hot hand from downtown, sinking five of the team’s seven treys altogether, for 15 team-high points. Jacob Golden had nine points, while Dekota Stewart added in seven.

Both teams will have a quick turnaround back on their home floors tonight, with Andover looking to continue the momentum swing back home with the Hinsdale Bobcats in town for a 7:30 p.m. contest, while Friendship will look to right the ship with Scio in for a 6 p.m. visit.

WRESTLING

Canisteo-Greenwood 48, Bolivar-Richburg 20

BOLIVAR — After taking down the competition this past weekend at Byron-Bergen, the Wolverines of Bolivar-Richburg returned to regular season action on the mat with a familiar foe in town for a visit, as they renewed their storied rivalry with Canisteo-Greenwood in town. The last time the Redskins visited the Wolverines, Bolivar-Richburg won the match right at the very end.

But this time around, Canisteo-Greenwood made sure it was in the rearview mirror, as they dominated the mat across the board, gathering up nine victories in all, with wins coming in three of the first four matches to set the tone for the rest of the match to leave town with a huge 48-20 victory over Bolivar-Richburg.

Just four wins were tallied by the Wolverine grapplers, with their first coming at the 132 bout, as Ethan Coleman, the team’s Most Outstanding Wrestler at this past weekend’s Byron-Bergen tournament, won by injury default. Later on, Kadin Tompkins would add a technical fall victory in his match at 152 pounds.

That would be the last of the victories until the heavyweight bouts halfway through the match, when Trent Sibble added the next after four straight Canisteo-Greenwood triumphs, as Sibble provided the quickest pinfall victory over Canisteo-Greenwood’s Trevor Machol at 215 pounds, with a time of 1:12. The team’s final victory would come in the lightweight class, from Dominic Stone, who defeated Caleb Woodworth by an 11-5 decision inside their 110 pound clash.

The Wolverines will return to the mat over the road Friday night, as they pay a visit to the Addison Knights for a 6 p.m. first bout.
