Friday Roundup: Lady Eagles move to 8-0 after balanced offensive attack fuels home win over Houghton; C-R rebounds, stings Fri/Scio twice in three games in 45-36 road win

FILLMORE — For their first game of the new calendar year, the Lady Eagles of Fillmore were out to prove something on Friday from within The Rock. That being how balanced of an attack they possess.

When Houghton Academy came to town for a visit, the majority of the pressure was on Fillmore’s leading scorer Emma Cole, all game. Despite the happenings, it would manage to create a huge opening for the weapons surrounding the Lady Eagles senior on the floor, as they held the Lady Panthers in check along the way to remain unbeaten with a 47-18 home win.

“Houghton made a commitment on putting three girls on Emma at all times, which really opened up everything else,” said Lady Eagles coach Tom Parks. “We needed to prove that we weren’t a one-dimensional team. It was good to get that first game out of the way, and for the long layover, the girls shot the ball really well tonight. We had our season high in three-pointers, our point guard play was awesome. I was proud of them, and Emma for not force feeding the paint. They took what was given to them, and they showed that we have a lot of weapons.”

The Lady Eagles (8-0) picked up their eighth straight win in style with a massive first half run that ultimately set the tone on their victory, coming out of the gates strong before adding to it with a 19-4 jaunt of Houghton Academy to head into the break with a 30-8 lead.

Hope Russell and Jadyn Mucher helped propel the offense towards big success, with Russell leading all scorers with a game-high 16 points. Mucher followed with a 12-point, 10-board double-double, while Zoe Beardsley dished in nine points. On special teams, Grace Russell collected six assists to go with four steals, while Cole grabbed eight boards, denied four shots and tallied three steals.

Both teams are back on the floor Monday night, as Fillmore goes for nine straight wins with the Cuba-Rushford Lady Rebels in town for a 7:30 p.m. visit, while Houghton Academy looks to rebound back home with a visit from Gilead forthcoming at 5 p.m.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Cuba-Rushford 45, Friendship/Scio 36

SCIO — For the second time in as many games, both Cuba-Rushford and Friendship/Scio would come together for the final time. The Rebels on one hand, were looking to provide a season sweep. As for Friendship/Scio, a chance to prevent it.

The Rebels took complete advantage straight out of the gate in their Championship game battle in the Christmas Tournament, two weeks ago. This time around, Friendship/Scio was able to turn the tables around with a quick start of their own in the opening quarter.

But like their previous meeting, Cuba-Rushford found a way to take control, as they recorded an 18-point quarter to end the first half within a stone’s throw of Friendship/Scio. The power shift would then carry over with a monumental third quarter that saw them take the lead officially away for good to provide the season sweep by a 45-36 final count, Friday night in Scio.

“We’re not going to win many games scoring 11 points in a half. We can’t really have long droughts like that happen.” said Friendship/Scio co-coach Dillon McFall. “Defensively, we were solid. Offensively, we struggled, and we have been struggling for the last few weeks. You’re not going to win when you’re missing layups, and you have to be able to make a few open jumpers. Turnovers killed us too, but it’s a long season though. We’re only halfway through it.”

Friendship/Scio (6-4) battled alongside Cuba-Rushford for the majority of the first quarter, coming away with the narrow 11-6 lead to build on. But it was soon threatened with a second quarter tidal wave from the Rebels, as they closed the gap to as little as two going into halftime with the momentum swinging in their favor.

The momentum would soon weigh down in Cuba-Rushford’s (4-3) favor in the third quarter, as they scored an 8-2 run of Friendship/Scio that gave them the lead permanently, providing one more outscoring in the fourth quarter along the way to end the night.

Leading the Rebels on offense was Jack Frank and his team-high 15 points. Jacob Smith added in 13 points of his own, while Luke Brooks chipped in with six.

On the other side for Friendship/Scio, Lazar Bulajic paced all scorers on the floor with a game-high 16 points. Jacob Golden added in seven points, while Ethan Davenport had six.
