Friday Roundup: Belfast picks up 4th win in first five behind scoreless 1st quarter run of And/Whi; Fillmore volleyball nets 1st win in four-set triumph over Scio

BELFAST — One way to start a game against your opponent is by recording a big run of offense. At the same time, your defense holding its ground on the opposite end, is an added bonus.

If you mix the two together, you can have the best of both worlds on floor. For the Bulldogs of Belfast on Friday, there was no better way to kick off the evening.

Led by a strong game by Anthony Logue and sound defense, the difference-making quarter came right in the first eight minutes for the hosts in white and red, as they held Andover/Whitesville scoreless from the field and on the board while netting 18 straight points to put together a solid 46-36 home win to record their fourth win in their first five games of the season.

Belfast (4-1) started their game on the most perfect of notes in the first quarter, seeing four different Bulldogs find the bucket during the frame, with Kadin and Anthony Logue combining to put up 11 of the team’s 18 on the board after it was all said and done.

After splitting dead-even quarters through the second and third, Andover/Whitesville (2-5) was provided a chance to eat away at their 18-point deficit they had faced for the majority of the game, getting as close as 10 to Belfast, but the first quarter deficit would wind up being too much for the visitors to overcome in the end.

Anthony Logue would finish up the battle with a game-high 22 points for the Bulldogs, finding the majority of his baskets from within the arc. Kadin Logue would follow with eight points of his own, while Matt Weaver sank seven of his own.

On the other side, Andover/Whitesville was led by their junior leader CJ Estep, who tallied a team-high 15 points. Spencer Mattison chipped in with five points. Jayden Dix had four points.

Both teams are back on the floor for the last time this calendar year on Wednesday, as Belfast will look to close out 2021 with their fifth win in first six with a home visit from Archbishop Walsh beginning in a 6 p.m. tip-off, while Andover/Whitesville looks to regroup with a 7:15 p.m. visit to Hammondsport in store.

Bolivar-Richburg 60, Genesee Valley 32

BELMONT — Every Bolivar-Richburg Wolverine in the lineup Friday night recorded at least a basket in what can be highly regarded as a complete and total team effort from start to finish, beginning their contest against Genesee Valley with their biggest frame of offense and ending it with their fifth win in their first six games behind a 60-32 win over the host Jaguars.

“My kids didn’t quit and they played their hearts out, but they were out-muscled and hustled tonight,” said Jaguars coach Lintz Bliven. “B-R has a very nice team, and Jeff (Margeson) is one of the best coaches in the County. He does a great job with all of his boys all the way through, and they provided a great game on their end. Landon Danaher is the real deal, and then you put the (Cam) MacDonell kid in there, they are incredibly talented with all of their role players behind them. If they can stay healthy, they can be a team that do some special things. They hustle, they play defense, they’re having fun and they are well-coached.”

Bolivar-Richburg’s (5-1) presence on the hardwood was made almost immediately after the opening tip, as they put forth their strongest tenure of offense to grab the early jump on Genesee Valley, holding them to just four points on defense on one end while putting the exclamation point on what was a 21-4 run through the opening quarter that saw them set the pace for good.

Genesee Valley (1-5) would go on to score their two largest quarters of offense upon exiting and re-entering the court, but the Wolverines continued to chip away on all cylinders during the second half to push their lead out insurmountably to make sure they captured their fifth win in first six games heading into the Christmas break.

Danaher led all Wolverines scorers with a game-high 24 points. Behind him, was Cam MacDonell who recorded eight points. Aydin Sisson had seven more to pitch in.

Thai Norasethaporn paced the Jaguars offense with his three-point game, nailing three of them for a team-high nine points. Max Wedge tallied eight points. Genesee Valley will return to their home floor Tuesday night with a 7:30 p.m. contest against Jasper-Troupsburg.

Bolivar-Richburg now heads into the holiday pause on a strong note, as they now wait until the new year to resume play with a January 5 home contest slated against the Cuba-Rushford Rebels, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Fillmore triumphs, C-R falls in 1st round at Franklinville Holiday Tourney

FRANKLINVILLE — Two Allegany County teams made their way to the west in Cattaraugus County for one last piece of action before the Christmas break officially takes effect next week, as Fillmore and Cuba-Rushford both took center stage in the annual Holiday Tournament in Franklinville.

Up first were the Lady Eagles, who faced Dunkirk to kick off the evening. Just like all four games have gone thus far, Fillmore made sure their fifth straight win was no different, as they started strong behind another phenomenal performance from senior Emma Cole, as they rolled toward Saturday night’s Championship game with a 52-19 rout of the Lady Marauders.

“I was proud of the girls and way they played tonight,” said Lady Eagles coach Tom Parks. “Emma has a great start to her season so far, and she’s been the anchor of our offense and defense. Franklinville has a great team, and they’re pretty balanced, so tonight’s game was a good game for us to get ready for them tomorrow.”

The Lady Eagles (5-0) held Dunkirk to single digits on the attack in the first three quarters of play while capitalizing on massive runs back the other way in transition, starting the night strong with a 15-3 lead on the Lady Marauders and never looking back from it, building an even greater lead going into halftime and maintaining it for the rest of the game.

Cole continued to be the centerpiece behind Fillmore’s successful first round battle, recording a massive 22-point, 16-rebound double-double, pairing it with seven blocks off the glass to further cement her dominance from within the paint against Dunkirk. Chipping in was Hope Russell, who recorded 10 points to pair with four steals, while Jadyn Mucher had eight points. On special teams, Grace Russell handed out five assists.

In the nightcap, it was a close battle straight down to the wire between both the Lady Rebels and host Franklinville. In fact, the endgame hung in the balance of the final possession the Lady Rebels would control after the Lady Panthers found the go-ahead basket with 30 seconds remaining.

But fortunately for the hosts in white and blue, they provided some heads up defense with a crucial turnover to keep the possession in their favor until the clock ran out on Cuba-Rushford, as Franklinville secured the final spot in Saturday night’s Championship game with a narrow 42-40 edging.

“It was a really physical game, back and forth tonight,” said Lady Rebels coach Aaron Wight. “I’m really proud of how our girls were really able to hang in there, and to not back down. We had the possession with around 18 seconds left, and then we turned it over. They took the lead right before that. It hurts, but we played a fantastic game against a great team.”

No quarter between the Lady Rebels and Lady Panthers eclipsed a margin over four points the entire 32 minutes, with the largest coming in the fourth quarter from the hosts, who held Cuba-Rushford to eight points, allowing them to cut away at their deficit until their final basket with under 30 seconds left put them ahead of the Lady Rebels.

With Cuba-Rushford (2-4) handling potentially the final possession of the game, Franklinville remained vigilant on defense, and took one poke at the ball to force it free and back into their hands to essentially hold the fort down, and did away with a potential game-tying bid from the Lady Rebels in the waning seconds.

Despite the result, the visitors in blue and white saw Taylor Searle provide another incredible performance from the field, netting a game-high 22 points to lead the way on offense. Brynn Lavery mixed in her best performance of the season with a season-high 13 points.

Beginning this afternoon back in Franklinville, the Lady Rebels will take on Dunkirk in the Consolation round starting with a 1 p.m. tip-off. Later in the evening, the Lady Eagles will look to bring a Holiday Tournament title back home to Fillmore, as they face the host Lady Panthers starting at 4 p.m.

Andover/Whitesville 61, Friendship/Scio 30

SCIO — Andover/Whitesville and Friendship/Scio had a battle through the first quarter of play, which resulted in a near double-digit lead for the visitors to lead off the night. Right before the first half came to an end, the defense began to kick into gear.

Up 20-12 on the hosts, Andover/Whitesville, behind the guidance of Vanessa Hall, used a big offensive spurt in the second quarter to grow their lead almost insurmountably, holding Friendship/Scio to just three points to pull away toward 61-30 road win in Scio, Friday night.

“The score doesn’t really show it, but there were a lot of great things the girls did tonight,” said Friendship/Scio coach Ashleigh Lewis. “We came out down eight in the first quarter, and we missed some lay-ups and had some turnovers, but our defense was outstanding in the first half. We had a great start in the third quarter to cut away at the deficit, but Vanessa Hall got away from us a bit. That’s how they made their runs. We got gassed at the end, and we could only do so much with five of our girls because of that.”

Hall provided another offensive explosion for Andover/Whitesville (4-1), recording a massive 30-point performance to lead the way behind a incredibly forceful start in the opening eight minutes. But along the way, Friendship/Scio would hang right alongside their opposition to trail by eight going into the second.

In that quarter to wrap up the first half, the visitors would create enough of buffer zone to perhaps their biggest run of the night — a 13-3 jaunt of Friendship/Scio to extend their lead from eight to 18 upon returning to the locker room.

Finishing behind Hall, Andover/Whitesville saw some active secondary scoring help the cause, with Rachel Jackson chipping in with 15 points of her own. Addison Morgan and Grace Fry each tallied eight points.

Nevaeh Ross led the attack for Friendship/Scio (2-3), netting all three of the team’s shots from outside to put toward a team-high 19 point effort. Sophie Bolzan and Kadence Donohue each had four points to chip in.

Andover/Whitesville will look to head into the Christmas break with a fifth win in their first six games, as they host Addison in Whitesville at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Friendship/Scio will look to rebound back on the road in Greenwood, visiting Jasper-Troupsburg in a 7:15 p.m. battle on Wednesday.

Canisteo-Greenwood 46, Avoca/Prattsburgh 36

CANISTEO — There was a second half fight on the horizon after both Avoca/Prattsburgh and Canisteo-Greenwood exchanged a fair amount of pleasantries through the first 16 minutes of play.

Each team would provide a big run through the second half, with Avoca/Prattsburgh heating up in the third quarter to branch their lead, but in the last eight minutes, the Lady Redskins found a way to cool them off behind a massive 14-2 run to pull away from their grasp to secure a 46-36 home win on Friday.

Two superstars rose to the occasion to help their teams weave through the second half after both teams traded blows in the first half that saw the Lady Redskins (4-2) take a five-point lead going into halftime. Avoca/Prattsburgh’s Riley Stowe went on to help power up the 16-9 third quarter run with nine of the team’s 16 points coming from within the frame to cut their deficit to four going into the final eight minutes.

With momentum continuing to build in their favor, Canisteo-Greenwood made sure the last eight minutes of the night were the most complete, as they buckled down on defense by holding Avoca/Prattsburgh to just two points while in the midst of their 14-2 run led by Lillian Mullen’s eight points. She would finish with a game-high 26 for the Lady Redskins.

Mullen would add 11 rebounds along with four steals to complete her double-double. Brooke Byrd added nine points along with 15 rebounds and five blocks, while Peyton Peters had eight points.

Canisteo-Greenwood jumps right back onto the floor today at Alfred-Almond with tip-off slated to begin at 2:30 p.m.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL

Fillmore 3, Scio 1

FILLMORE — Right before the Christmas break settles in next week, there was one thing that the Eagles of Fillmore managed to cross off their list — their first victory.

Friday night inside The Rock, the team would go on to do just that, as they successfully rebounded from a four-set loss to Arkport/Canaseraaga with a four-set victory of their own against visiting Scio, bouncing back from a second-set extension to roll past the Tigers in the last two sets left in the night to take the 25-7, 24-26, 25-10, 25-19 decision.

Aiden Wagner had a magnificent night to lead the Eagles (1-3), scoring a whopping 20 service points to pair with her two aces, one kill and one block. Joe Derck chipped in 13 service points along the way to couple with three aces. In addition, Haley Hall provided 11 service points and two aces, while Henry Decker had eight service points and two aces.

For Scio (1-4), Jude Marion led the offense with a team-high five kills, while Joey Nickerson tallied three aces from the service line to pair with her two kills.

Fillmore will return to action Tuesday night with a 6 p.m. first serve at Cuba-Rushford, while Scio looks to bounce back over the road themselves on Monday with a 6 p.m. visit of their own to Bolivar-Richburg.

Bolivar-Richburg 77, Alfred-Almond 21

ALMOND — After two wins on each side began the night on the mat, the tidal wave for the Bolivar-Richburg Wolverines soon followed, as they accounted for victories in five of the last nine matches in between a plethora of forfeits to race away and out of the reach of Alfred-Almond in their 77-21 road rout of the Eagles, Friday evening.
